Post‐logging seedling regeneration density by big‐leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), a nonpioneer light‐demanding timber species, is generally reported to be low to nonexistent. To investigate factors limiting seedling density following logging within the study region, we quantified seed production rates, germinability, dispersal patterns, and seed fates on the forest floor through germination and the first seedling growing season in southeastern Amazonia, Brazil. Fruit production rates were low by three logged and one unlogged populations compared to reports from other regions. Commercial‐sized trees (>60 cm diameter) were more fecund than noncommercial trees (30–60 cm diameter) at two sites, averaging 14.5 vs. 3.9 fruits/tree/year, respectively, at Marajoara, a logged site, over 8 yr. Fruit capsules contained an average of 60.3 seeds/fruit, 70 percent of which appeared viable by visual inspection. Sixty‐seven to 72 percent of apparently viable seeds germinated in nursery beds 2.5 mo after the dispersal period, when wet season rains began. Dry season winds blew most seeds west‐northwest of parent trees, with median dispersal distances of 28 and 9 m on west and east sides of parent trees, respectively. Nearly 100 percent of seeds fell within an area of 0.91 ha. On the forest floor beneath closed canopies, mammals, invertebrates, and fungal pathogens killed 40 percent of apparently viable seeds, while 36 percent germinated. Nine months after seedling establishment—midway through the first logging season following seed dispersal—14 percent of outplanted seeds survived as seedlings, representing 5.8 seeds/fruit. We conclude that seedlings are likely to survive in logging gaps at appreciable densities only in rare cases where previous year fruit production rates by logged trees were high (4–12.5% of commercial‐sized trees/year at Marajoara) and where tree crowns were felled in west or northwest directions.  相似文献

Soil solarisation was consistently efficacious in reducing inoculum density to undetectable levels in a field naturally‐infested with Sclerotium cepivorum. This treatment delayed epidemic onset of white rot of garlic 2–3 months as compared with the untreated control or the inoculation of planting furrows with Glomus intraradices. Furthermore, significant reductions of disease incidence and of the standardised AUDPC were also observed in solarised plots, resulting in quantitative and qualitative yield improvement. Similar effects were observed in plots planted with tebuconazole‐treated cloves, confirming previous results, whereas Trichoderma harzianum was ineffective as a biocontrol agent, when applied to planting furrows. The inoculation of plots with G. intraradices before planting, in three consecutive years, was neither effective for disease control nor on the development of garlic, although the root systems of garlic plants from all the experimental treatments were heavily mycorrhizal at harvest, indicating the presence of native arbuscular mycorrhizal propagules in the soil and their survival after soil solarisation.  相似文献

Tropical monodominant forests in which one tree species dominates the canopy occur in all three major tropical regions, but few studies have focused on the mechanisms responsible for dominance. This study tests the hypothesis that relative to other species in the community, dominant species are well defended and escape herbivore and pathogen damage. We surveyed the rate of damage on young expanding leaves of seedlings and saplings belonging to eight species within both monodominant Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forests and adjacent mixed–species forests in eastern Congo. Results showed that escape from herbivore and pathogen damage is not a mechanism by which Gilbertiodendron achieves dominance, as it suffered the highest damage level of any species surveyed. Similarly, other sub–dominant common species also suffered high rates of damage. These results are discussed in relation to the phenolic, fiber, and nitrogen content of leaves, and in the context of current theories pertaining to plant–herbivore interactions.  相似文献

Serum amyloid P component (SAP) is a highly preserved plasma protein named for its ubiquitous presence in amyloid deposits. Although SAP is described to bind many ligands, no clear biological function has been ascribed to it as yet. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the protein SAP, its ligands and functional properties. Finally, the author focuses on the recent finding of the binding of SAP to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Gram-negative bacteria and the possible functional consequences of these interactions.  相似文献

The rapid and accurate detection and identification of food-borne pathogenic bacteria is critical for food safety. In this paper, we describe a rapid (<4 h) high-throughput detection and identification system that uses universal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers to amplify a variable region of bacterial the 16S rRNA gene, followed by reverse hybridization of the products to species-specific oligonucleotide probes on a chip. This procedure was successful in discriminating 204 strains of bacteria from pure culture belonging to 13 genera of bacteria. When this method was applied directly to 115 strains of bacteria isolated from foods, 112/115 (97.4%) were correctly identified; two strains were indistinguishable due to weak signal, while one failed to produce a PCR product. The array was used to detect and successfully identify two strains of bacteria from food poisoning outbreak samples, giving results through hybridization that were identical to those obtained by traditional methods. The sensitivity of the microarray assay was 102 CFU of bacteria. Thus, the oligonucleotide microarray is a powerful tool for the detection and identification of pathogens from foods. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the structure, function, assembly, and biomedical applications of the family of adhesive fimbrial organelles assembled on the surface of Gram-negative pathogens via the FGL chaperone/usher pathway. Recent studies revealed the unique structural and functional properties of these organelles, distinguishing them from a related family, FGS chaperone-assembled adhesive pili. The FGL chaperone-assembled organelles consist of linear polymers of one or two types of protein subunits, each possessing one or two independent adhesive sites specific to different host cell receptors. This structural organization enables these fimbrial organelles to function as polyadhesins. Fimbrial polyadhesins may ensure polyvalent fastening of bacteria to the host cells, aggregating their receptors and triggering subversive signals that allow pathogens to evade immune defense. The FGL chaperone-assembled fimbrial polyadhesins are attractive targets for vaccine and drug design.  相似文献

Interactions of Neotyphodium gansuense, Achnatherum inebrians, and nine fungal pathogens were studied by tests of inhibition of four fungal pathogens by Neotyphodium endophytes in vitro and by inoculation of nine fungal pathogens on detached leaves of endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E−) plants. Compared with the controls, most isolates of N. gansuense significantly inhibited the growth in vitro of, in decreasing order of inhibition, Bipolaris sorokiniana, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium acuminatum, and Alternaria alternata. Inhibition zones appeared between pathogens and some isolates of N. gansuense. Some isolates of N. gansuense significantly inhibited sporulation of B. sorokiniana, A. alternata, and C. lunata. However, there was no significant inhibition of F. acuminatum and a few isolates significantly increased sporulation. The leaf inoculation trial indicated that almost all fungal pathogens were able to cause lesions on detached leaves regardless of endophyte status. Both the number and size of disease lesions on E+ A. inebrians leaves caused by A. alternata, F. chlamydosporum, F. oxysporum, and F. solani were reduced compared with those on E− leaves. Only lesion numbers (not size) of Ascochyta leptospora leaf spots were significantly reduced on E+ leaves compared with E− leaves. Conversely, only the length of Ascochyta leptospora leaf spots were significantly smaller on E+ leaves than on E− leaves; numbers of lesions were not significantly affected. C. lunata was strongly pathogenic to both E+ and E− leaves and numerous lesions developed and merged into patches, the leaf surface was covered and the leaf rotted away.  相似文献

炎症小体(Inflammasome)是细胞质中多种蛋白组装成的复合物,炎症小体的激活能活化半胱天冬酶-1(caspase-1),进而引起系列促炎细胞因子的成熟与分泌和诱导细胞焦亡。当病原体感染时,炎症小体的激活在宿主天然免疫应答中起重要作用。大量研究表明,多数情况下炎症小体对宿主起保护作用,仅少数情况下保护作用不明显或表现出有利于病原体生存的一面。在长期进化中,病原体也发展出逃避宿主炎症小体作用的策略。病原体可直接抑制炎症小体的激活或减弱炎症小体的作用。本文从病原体感染宿主中炎症小体的作用及病原体对宿主炎性症小体的逃避机制两方面对二者相互作用的最新研究进展进行综述。  相似文献

Oomycete diseases cause significant losses across a broad range of crop and aquaculture commodities worldwide. These losses can be greatly reduced by disease management practices steered by accurate and early diagnoses of pathogen presence. Determinations of disease potential can help guide optimal crop rotation regimes, varietal selections, targeted control measures, harvest timings and crop post‐harvest handling. Pathogen detection prior to infection can also reduce the incidence of disease epidemics. Classical methods for the isolation of oomycete pathogens are normally deployed only after disease symptom appearance. These processes are often time consuming, relying on culturing the putative pathogen(s) and the availability of expert taxonomic skills for accurate identification, a situation that frequently results in either delayed application, or routine ‘blanket’ over‐application of control measures. Increasing concerns about pesticides in the environment and the food chain, removal or restriction of their usage combined with rising costs have focussed interest in the development and improvement of disease management systems. To be effective, these require timely, accurate and preferably quantitative diagnoses. A wide range of rapid diagnostic tools, from point of care immunodiagnostic kits to next generation nucleotide sequencing have potential application in oomycete disease management. Here we review currently available as well as promising new technologies in the context of commercial agricultural production systems, considering the impacts of specific biotic and abiotic and other important factors such as speed and ease of access to information and cost effectiveness.  相似文献
