Dyslexia is characterized by impaired reading and spelling. The disorder has a prevalence of about 5% in Germany, and a strong hereditary component. Several loci are thought to be involved in the development of dyslexia. Scerri et al. identified eight potential dyslexia‐associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in seven genes on chromosome 18 in an English‐speaking population. Here, we present an association analysis that explores the relevance of these SNPs in a German population comprising 388 dyslexia cases and 364 control cases. In case–control analysis, three nominal SNP associations were replicated. The major alleles of NEDD4L‐rs12606138 and NEDD4L‐rs8094327 were risk associated [odds ratio (OR) = 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.0–1.7, P‐value = 0.017 and OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.1–1.7, P‐value = 0.007, respectively], and both SNPs were in strong linkage disequilibrium (r2 = 0.95). For MYO5B‐rs555879, the minor allele was risk associated (OR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.1–1.6, P‐value = 0.011). The combined analysis of SNP sets using set enrichment analysis revealed a study‐wide significant association for three SNPs with susceptibility for dyslexia. In summary, our results substantiate genetic markers in NEDD4L and MYO5B as risk factors for dyslexia and provide first evidence that the relevance of these markers is not restricted to the English language .  相似文献

为弄清光周期对一种亚热带蜚蠊(Periplaneta japanna)若虫发育的控制机理,检测了光周期对冲绳(26°N)和八丈岛(33°N)两个地理种群若虫发育的影响。结果表明,光周期显著影响两地理种群的若虫发育,然而,冲绳和八丈岛种群间显示不同的光周期反应模式。冲绳种群在长日条件下(LD 16∶8h)若虫发育显著快于中间日长(LD 14∶10h)和短日条件下(LD 12∶12h)的若虫发育,孵化后60d 或120d 将若虫自LD 16∶8h向LD 12∶12h转移,若虫发育受到抑制,而自LD 12∶12h向LD 16∶8h转移,则促进若虫发育。八丈岛种群的若虫在短日条件下发育最快,其次是中间日长,长日条件下若虫发育最慢,孵化后60d 或120d 将若虫自LD 16∶8h向LD 12∶12h转移抑制若虫发育,反方向转移的若虫快速发育。两地理种群间不同的光周期反应模式可以认为是趋异进化的结果。  相似文献

Abstract Previous research has shown that fundamental properties of the circadian pacemaker that drives the rhythm of locomotor activity in the cockroach Leucophaea maderae L. are permanently altered by exposure of animals to 22 or 26 h light cycles during post-embryonic development (Barrett & Page, 1989; Page & Barrett, 1989). The present results document differences between animals exposed to either constant darkness (DD) or constant light (LL) during postembryonic development in the free-running period, the phase shifting response to light pulses, and the response to an LL to DD transition of the adult pacemaker. In addition, the changes in pacemaker period and in the phase shifting response that result from raising animals in several different lighting conditions are shown to be strongly correlated. The data suggest there is a developmentally labile interdependence between the period of the pacemaker and its sensitivity to light.  相似文献

Here, we hypothesized that the microbial gut flora of animals/pests living in polluted environments, produce substances to thwart bacterial infections. The overall aim of this study was to source microbes inhabiting unusual environmental niches for potential antimicrobial activity. Two cockroach species, Gromphadorhina portentosa (Madagascar) and Blaptica dubia (Dubia) were selected. The gut bacteria from these species were isolated and grown in RPMI 1640 and conditioned media were prepared. Conditioned media were tested against a panel of Gram‐positive (Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus cereus) and Gram‐negative (Escherichia coli K1, Salmonella enterica, Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria, as well as the protist pathogen, Acanthamoeba castellanii. The results revealed that the gut bacteria of cockroaches produce active molecule(s) with potent antibacterial properties, as well as exhibit antiamoebic effects. However, heat‐inactivation at 95°C for 10 min had no effect on conditioned media‐mediated antibacterial and antiamoebic properties. These results suggest that bacteria from novel sources i.e. from the cockroach's gut produce molecules with bactericidal as well as amoebicidal properties that can ultimately lead to the development of therapeutic drugs.

Significance and Impact of the Study

The bacteria isolated from unusual dwellings such as the cockroaches' gut are a useful source of antibacterial and antiamoebal molecules. These are remarkable findings that will open several avenues in our search for novel antimicrobials from unique sources. Furthermore studies will lead to the identification of molecules to develop future antibacterials from insects.  相似文献

The sexual behavior of males and females ofEurycotis floridana was investigated and the various associated behavioral sequences are described. Olfactometer data proved that the male produces a volatile sex pheromone attractive at a distance to conspecific females. The male initiates courtship behavior by exposing the glandular areas on the anterior parts of abdominal tergites 2, 7, and 8. This male calling behavior was observed throughout the day. The males can mate when 8 days old, whereas virgin females are sexually receptive 18 days after becoming adults. Once attracted near the male, the female opens her genital atrium and climbs on the back of the male, where she feeds on the glandular secretions that oozed around a little tuft of setae on the first tergite. These setae are mechanoreceptors and they are stimulated when licked by the females, which informs the male that she is in a proper position for copulation.  相似文献

Allatostatins with the C‐terminal ending Tyr/Phe‐Xaa‐Phe‐Gly‐Leu/Ile‐amide (FGLa/ASTs) are widespread neuropeptides with multiple functions. The gene encoding the FGLa/AST polypeptide precursor was first isolated from cockroaches and since then could be identified in many insects and crustaceans. With its strictly conserved regions in combination with variable regions the gene seems to be a good candidate for phylogenetic analyses between closely and distantly related species. Here, the structure of the FGLa/AST gene of the most primitive termite, the giant northern termite Mastotermes darwiniensis Froggatt, was identified. The FGLa/AST gene of the woodroach Cryptocercus darwini was also determined. Precursor sequences of both species possess the general organization of dictyopteran FGLa/AST precursors containing 14 putative FGLa/AST peptides. In M. darwiniensis, only 11 out of the 14 FGLa/AST‐like peptides possess the C‐terminal conserved region Y/FXFGL/I/V/M and four of the putative peptide structures are not followed by a Gly residue that would lead to nonamidated peptides. Phylogenetic analyses show the high degree of similarity of dictyopteran FGLa/AST sequences. The position of termites, nested within the Blattaria, confirms that termites have evolved from primitive cockroaches.  相似文献

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are ligand‐gated ion channels expressed in many insect structures, such as mushroom bodies, in which they play a central role. We have recently demonstrated using electrophysiological recordings that different native nicotinic receptors are expressed in cockroach mushroom bodies Kenyon cells. In the present study, we demonstrated that eight genes coding for cockroach nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits are expressed in the mushroom bodies. Quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) experiments demonstrated that β1 subunit was the most expressed in the mushroom bodies. Moreover, antisense oligonucleotides performed against β1 subunit revealed that inhibition of β1 expression strongly decreases nicotine‐induced currents amplitudes. Moreover, co‐application with 0.5 μM α‐bungarotoxin completely inhibited nicotine currents whereas 10 μM d‐tubocurarine had a partial effect demonstrating that β1‐containing neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes could be sensitive to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist α‐bungarotoxin.  相似文献

By using thin-layer chromatography and high-pressure liquid chromatography combined with radioimmunoassay as well as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry we have identified and quantified ecdysteroids in ovaries and haemolymph of adult female Nauphoeta cinerea. Our analyses demonstrate the presence of ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone, the latter being clearly predominant in all stages investigated. Titre determinations of free ecdysteroids in ovaries show that the 20-hydroxyecdysone concentration is highest (approximately 400 ng/g) at the beginning of chorion formation, suggesting an involvement in this process. Towards ovulation, the titre of free ecdysteroid drops and is low in the newly ovulated egg case. Measurement of immunoreactive highly polar products demonstrates that their concentration remains on a low level throughout the oöcyte maturation period; hydrolysis experiments with Helix pomatia enzymes reveal that, compared to the free ecdysteroids in the ovary, only small quantities of ecdysteroids are present as Helix hydrolysable conjugates. If one compares the quantities of free ecdysteroids in the ovary with those in the haemolymph it becomes apparent that the concentration in the haemolymph is about 10 times lower than that in the ovary.In vitro incubation of follicle cells from oöcytes at stages around chorion formation reveals that these cells are able to produce ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone, and incubation with [3H]-ecdysone demonstrates that ecdysone is efficiently converted to 20-hydroxyecdysone in a stage-dependent manner. These observations strongly suggest that the follicle cells are the site of ecdysteroid biosynthesis and of C-20-ecdysone hydroxylation.A comparison of these findings with observations made of other insects such as locusts and mosquitoes demonstrates significant differences in quality, composition, titre fluctuation and distribution of ecdysteroids in adult females from different species and suggests that these ecdysteroids might fulfil multiple and various biological functions.  相似文献

In the cockroach, Leucophaea maderae, the hindgut is innervated by the proctodeal nerves, branches of nerves XI of the terminal abdominal ganglion.Phasic afferent activity was recorded from the 11th-proctodeal nerve in response to distention of the hindgut by saline injection. With methylene blue staining, eight multipolar sensory receptors of type II (Dethier, 1963, The Physiology of Insect Senses. Methuen, London) were identified on the ventral and lateral surfaces of the rectum, four on each side. The afferent activity in the 11th-proctodeal nerve most likely originated in these receptors.  相似文献

In contrast to ad hoc methods of developing traps for pest monitoring systems, a systematic approach using direct observation of animals allowed a greater understanding of the reasons why trap catch was significantly different in traps of basically similar design. The information gained using this approach could then be used to guide the further development of the trap. The same feature on two related designs of cockroach trap was varied: the slope of the ramp leading into the trap was either 60°, 30°, or 0°. The 30° ramp version of both traps caught significantly more Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae). The 60° and 0° ramp versions both caught equal, lower, numbers but observation showed that these net catches were achieved by quite different means; few insects entered over the 60° ramps but none escaped, whereas all entered over the 0° ramps but half escaped. Similar approaches could be applied to other insect-trap systems.  相似文献
