The relative diversity and distinctness of Ethiopian barleys has been investigated using (1) morphology/isozyme/hordein polymorphisms
and (2) RFLP markers. In the former a set of 51 landraces from over the whole of Ethiopia was compared with Iranian landraces
based on data from previous studies and new hordein data. The two sets of landraces were found to have a comparable diversity.
The Ethiopian ones are more diverse morphologically (5 traits), are similar in numbers of alleles per protein locus (17 loci)
and in genetic differentiation, but are less diverse in average heterozygosity per locus and degree of polymorphism. However,
on the basis of the hordein data the two sources of germplasm are very distinct. The correlation between morphological and
protein diversity is very low. In the RFLP study 28 probes evenly distributed across the genome were used to analyse 43 Ethiopian
landraces (represented by one single genotype) and to compare them with modern cultivars from North America, Europe and Japan,
as well as 3 landraces from Iran, 1 from Nepal, and 1 accession of H. spontaneum from Afghanistan. The major finding was that the Ethiopian germplasm appears to be significantly less diverse than the modern
germplasm but that it is genotypically very distinct. The apparent contradiction between a high diversity of useful genes
coming from Ethiopia and an apparently low diversity at the DNA level is discussed.

Utilizing intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers, 18 mulberry (Morus spp.) germplasm collections were studied for genetic variability, phylogenetic relationship, and association with protein
and sugar content. The genetic polymorphism exhibited by ISSR primers was 100%, and the genetic diversity recorded among the
mulberry accessions had an average of 0.263 ± 0.094. Dendrogram (unweighted pair group method analysis) clustered the mulberry
accessions into two major groups, one comprised the accessions collected from north or northeast regions of India, and the
other comprised three subclusters and one isolate, i.e., Assamjati, a collection from Assam. Another subcluster contained
accessions collected from Kerala, which belong to Morus indica. These accessions of M. indica from Kerala were found to be genetically diverse from north and northeast India. Multidimensional scaling of the ISSR data
clearly separated the mulberry accessions according to their genetic diversity and protein content. Mulberry accessions were
arbitrarily grouped into three classes viz. very low, moderate, and high in terms of protein and sugar content using standard
statistical programs. Stepwise multiple regression analysis identified four ISSR markers (8351,600, 8355,600, 8222,500, and 8072,500) associated with protein content with highly positive correlation (p < 0.001) with linear curves with high F values (18.055 to 48.674; p < 0.001). In case of sugar content, four ISSR markers viz. 812900, 8171,500, 8261,500, and 8108,000 showed negative correlation. Euryodendron excelsum is a critically endangered tertiary relict plant endemic to China. It has only one population remaining in Ba Jia Zhen of Yangchun, Guangdong. In this study, we discovered 25 microsatellite markers from E. excelsumusing a Fast Isolation by Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism of Sequences COntaining Repeats (FIASCO) protocol. Thirteen loci demonstrated polymorphisms, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from 2 to 13. Values for observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.176 to 1.000 and from 0.261 to 0.889, respectively. Three loci (ZXM-17, ZXM-54, and ZXM-92) were found to significantly deviate from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In addition, five of 13 loci could be successfully cross-amplified in Ternstroemia gymnanthera. These microsatellite loci may help to further survey the adaptive evolution and genetic variation of E. excelsum for guiding its conservation. 相似文献

Human infections with non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) serovars are increasingly becoming a threat to human health globally. While all motile Salmonellae have zoonotic potential, Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium are most commonly associated with human disease, for which poultry are a major source. Despite the increasing number of human NTS infections, the epidemiology of NTS in poultry in India has not been fully understood. Hence, as a first step, we carried out epidemiological analysis to establish the incidence of NTS in poultry to evaluate the risk to human health. A total of 1215 samples (including poultry meat, tissues, egg and environmental samples) were collected from 154 commercial layer farms from southern India and screened for NTS. Following identification by cultural and biochemical methods, Salmonella isolates were further characterized by multiplex PCR, allele-specific PCR, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR and pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). In the present study, 21/1215 (1.73 %) samples tested positive for NTS. We found 12/392 (3.06 %) of tissue samples, 7/460 (1.52 %) of poultry products, and 2/363 (0.55 %) of environmental samples tested positive for NTS. All the Salmonella isolates were resistant to oxytetracycline, which is routinely used as poultry feed additive. The multiplex PCR results allowed 16/21 isolates to be classified as S. Typhimurium, and five isolates as S. Enteritidis. Of the five S. Enteritidis isolates, four were identified as group D Salmonella by allele-specific PCR. All of the isolates produced different banding patterns in ERIC PCR. Of the thirteen macro restriction profiles (MRPs) obtained by PFGE, MRP 6 was predominant which included 6 (21 %) isolates. In conclusion, the findings of the study revealed higher incidence of contamination of NTS Salmonella in poultry tissue and animal protein sources used for poultry. The results of the study warrants further investigation on different type of animal feed sources, food market chains, processing plants, live bird markets etc., to evaluate the risk factors, transmission and effective control measures of human Salmonella infection from poultry products. 相似文献

Population differentiation in Crepis tectorum (Asteraceae): patterns of correlation among characters

This study examines the relationship among traits distinguishing populations of C. tectorum and the extent to which existing trait associations reflect underlying (genetic) tradeoffs. Highly consistent trait associations were found in a comparison of 52 populations representing the western part of the geographical range of the species. In addition to a tight integration of traits reflecting plant stature and inflorescence development, there were consistent links between vegetative and reproductive traits; populations characterized by individuals with large leaves and tall stems with terminal branches usually had larger heads, flowers and fruits (achenes) than those whose individuals had small leaves and a short stem branched from the base. There was a weak negative relationship between the extent of leaf dissection and plant stature; short and compact plants had more deeply lobed leaves than tall plants with terminal branches. Few of these associations were present among families representing a single population of C. tectorum , but there was remarkable similarity between the correlations at the between-population level and those obtained in two segregating F2 progenies of crosses between contrasting populations. Hence, provided that the F2 correlations have a strong genetic basis, it appears that the course of population divergence has been constrained by the underlying correlation structure, although some trait associations may also be a result of selection operating in a correlated fashion on functionally related traits, perhaps leading to linkage disequilibrium of parental traits in the first segregating generation of a cross between ecologically differentiated populations. 相似文献

information, both correlating with and coding for various outcomes, neither of these implies that the genome has semantic

In the Scope of Logic, Methodology, and the Philosophy of Sciences, Vol. II. Kluwer, Dordrecht, pp. 387–400). Here a modified
version of teleosemantics is applied to the genome to show that it does indeed have semantic properties – there is representation
in the genome. The account differs in three respects from previous attempts to apply teleosemantics to genes. It emphasises
the role of the consumer of representations (in addition to their mode of production). It rejects the standard assumption
that genetic representation can be used to explain the course of an organism’s development. And it identifies the explanatory
role played by representational properties of the genome. A striking consequence of this account is that other inheritance
systems could also be representational. Thus, a version of the parity thesis is accepted (Griffiths P.E. 2001. Philos. Sci.

Light is known to regulate conservative germination strategies and the formation of seed banks. Although these strategies
are crucial to survival in tundra environments—especially for annuals—light requirements for germination in arctic–alpine
species are seldom investigated. Furthermore, environmental differences between arctic and alpine regions are expected to
lead to evolutionary divergence among conspecific populations in seed germination strategies. In this study, we report important
differences in germination light requirements among six arctic and alpine populations of the annual Koenigia islandica. Light had little effect on germination of the seeds from Iqaluit (Nunavut, Canada), Yukon (Canada), and Jasper (Alberta,
Canada), whereas the seeds from the most severe climates, Svalbard (Norway) and Colorado (USA), had strong light requirements.
Stratification of the seeds had little influence on their germination light requirements, with the exception of the population
from Dovre (Norway), in which it induced a strong light requirement. Possible adaptive explanations and some implications

At what intensity the grazing should be practiced on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in China is always confusing farmers, scientists and policy makers for a long time owing to its geographical exception. In order to develop a strategy for sustainable grazing management, we used the dominant Stipa purpurea as a model species to detect genetic diversity and fine spatial structure under different grazing intensities. Intra-population neutral genetic diversity in non-grazed population was significantly higher than three grazed populations; however, the highest value among grazed populations appeared in the moderately grazed population. A relatively low degree of genetic differentiation among populations by AMOVA analysis and a high level of gene flow existed among populations (Gst = 0.2649, Nm = 1.3875 〉 1). The genetic ‘patch’ size increased from 4 m to 16 m and subpopulation number within the S. purpurea populations ranged from 7 to 5 with increasing grazing intensity, therefore grazing will be beneficial to reduce the fragmentation and to increase the population-level adaptation. Though enclosure or no grazing is the best protection of plant germplasm like wind-pollination S. purpurea, moderate grazing is better strategy for grassland use on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. 相似文献
