Left ventricular (LV) wall stress has intrigued scientists and cardiologists since the time of Lame and Laplace in 1800s. The left ventricle is an intriguing organ structure, whose intrinsic design enables it to fill and contract. The development of wall stress is intriguing to cardiologists and biomedical engineers. The role of left ventricle wall stress in cardiac perfusion and pumping as well as in cardiac pathophysiology is a relatively unexplored phenomenon. But even for us to assess this role, we first need accurate determination of in vivo wall stress. However, at this point, 150 years after Lame estimated left ventricle wall stress using the elasticity theory, we are still in the exploratory stage of (i) developing left ventricle models that properly represent left ventricle anatomy and physiology and (ii) obtaining data on left ventricle dynamics. In this paper, we are responding to the need for a comprehensive survey of left ventricle wall stress models, their mechanics, stress computation and results. We have provided herein a compendium of major type of wall stress models: thin-wall models based on the Laplace law, thick-wall shell models, elasticity theory model, thick-wall large deformation models and finite element models. We have compared the mean stress values of these models as well as the variation of stress across the wall. All of the thin-wall and thick-wall shell models are based on idealised ellipsoidal and spherical geometries. However, the elasticity model's shape can vary through the cycle, to simulate the more ellipsoidal shape of the left ventricle in the systolic phase. The finite element models have more representative geometries, but are generally based on animal data, which limits their medical relevance. This paper can enable readers to obtain a comprehensive perspective of left ventricle wall stress models, of how to employ them to determine wall stresses, and be cognizant of the assumptions involved in the use of specific models. 相似文献

While it is well established that the shapes and sizes of shells are strongly phylogenetically controlled, little is known about the phylogenetic constraints on shell thickness. Yet, shell thickness is likely to be sensitive to environmental fluctuations and has the potential to illuminate environmental perturbations through deep time. Here we systematically quantify the thickness of the anterior brachiopod shell which protects the filtration chamber and is thus considered functionally homologous across higher taxa of brachiopods. Our data come from 66 genera and 10 different orders and shows well-defined upper and lower boundaries of anterior shell thickness. For Ordovician and Silurian brachiopods we find significant order-level differences and a trend of increasing shell thickness with water depth. Modern (Cenozoic) brachiopods, by comparison, fall into the lower half of observed shell thicknesses. Among Ordovician–Silurian brachiopods, older stocks commonly have thicker shells, and thick-shelled taxa contributed more prominently to the Great Ordovician Biodiversification but suffered more severely during the Late Ordovician Mass Extinction. Our data highlight a significant reduction in maximum and minimum shell thickness following the Late Ordovician mass extinction. This points towards stronger selection pressure for energy-efficient shell secretion during times of crisis. 相似文献

Abstract Populations of the native land snail Placostylus hongii (Lesson, 1830) on the Poor Knights Islands were investigated during visits in 1976, 1977, and 1978. Marking and recapture of individual snails showed that linear growth of the shell ceased when a lip was formed around the outer margin of the aperture. Measurements of snails suggested that increase in outer lip width was a good indication of age, but that the rate of lip thickening varied between populations. Large Placostylus showed a restricted range of movement. Both tagging studies and random sampling revealed that mortality was size specific. Most small snails (<60 mm shell length) located were dead, whereas most larger snails were alive. Population densities of living snails averaged 2.2 individuals per 0.25 m2 in the study area. The local distribution was patchy owing to the tendency of snails to be associated with specific features of the vegetation. 相似文献

In spite of their sessile nature, oysters of the genera Crassostrea, Ostrea and their allies are adapted to live on soft muddy bottoms. To provide them with secure attachment and to keep the animal above the surface of the mud, these soft-bottom oysters employ two basic strategies. They tend to be gregarious in their settlement, thereby providing one another with surfaces for attachment, and they form lightweight shells. In addition to these common characteristics, these oysters have followed different morphological pathways to live successfully on soft muddy bottoms. There are at least four types of morphologies: (1) relay-type succession (shells pile up on one another over many generations); (2) konbo-type elongation (both valves grow vertically upwards, the dorsal hinge remaining at the base, near the umbo); (3) cone-type elongation (the attached valve grows upwards and the free valve acts as a lid); and (4) lightweight recliners (bulky shells with lightweight fabrics and cavities within them). Judging from the variety of taxa that have adopted it and the sizes of their populations, the relay-type is the most successful of these strategies. Recliners were particularly common during the Mesozoic. The relay-type appeared in the Late Jurassic, becoming the dominant adaptive strategy during the Cenozoic. 相似文献

The phylogeny and diagenesis of Pleistocene and Recent bivalves were studied immunologically by use of a conventional antiserum elicited against an EDTA‐soluble macromolecular extract from shells of the modern bivalve mollusc Mercenaria mercenaria. ELISA tests of the antiserum with shell fragments of a wide range of modern bivalves gave taxonomically significant results. The antiserum reacted with palaeoheterodonts and heterodonts but not with representatives of other bivalve subclasses. This phylogenetic reactivity was also apparent in tests with fossil shells, although the specificity and overall strength of the reaction were both reduced. Absorption of the antiserum with etched shell powders of various (palaeo)heterodonts yielded more specific antibody preparations. Investigations of shell matrix diagenesis, using the anti‐Mercenaria serum, demonstrated that small amounts of original determinants could be detected even in fossils over one million years old. The reactivity of the serum with extracts of fossil Mercenaria decreased with sample age. The relationship between serum reactivity and the degree of amino acid racemization was almost linear. Summary The reproductive biology of the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha was studied during 1999 in a natural population living in Lake Como (N. Italy), with particular reference to the differences in behavior between young and adult mussels. Histological analysis of gonads was used to study the gametogenic cycles and to evaluate when the young reached sexual maturity. Signs of active gametogenesis were detected in ≥4 mm shell length mussels. Mature gametes and the first spawning events were observed in ≥5 mm males and in ≥6 mm females. The gonad feature of ≥7 mm mussels was similar to that of the adults. Size frequency distributions revealed that the new generation (0+) first spawned in the year following birth, but only after winter. The length of larval time seemed to vary greatly depending on the spawning period, in addition to the environmental conditions. The first settled mussels ≥500 μm in shell length were observed 3–4 months after the first depositions. Water temperature seemed to be the most important factor which regulated sexual phenomena of both young and adult mussels. Its role in the onset of the spawning events was confirmed, but it is important to point out that temperature is not enough to trigger reproduction since gamete release is impossible without sufficient energy, especially for young mussels. 相似文献

Rabies is a neurotropic disease that is often lethal. The early diagnosis of rabies infection is important and requires methods that allow for the isolation of the virus from animals and humans. The present study compared a modified shell vial (MSV) procedure using 24-well tissue culture plates with the mouse inoculation test (MIT), which is considered the gold standard for rabies virus isolation. Thirty brain samples (25 positive and 5 negative by the fluorescent antibody test) obtained from different animal species at the National Institute of Hygiene Rafael Rangel in Caracas, Venezuela, were studied by the MIT and MSV assays. Nine samples (36%) were positive at 24 h, 10 (40%) were positive at 48 h and six (24%) were positive at 72 h by the MSV assay. With the MIT assay, 76% were positive at six days post inoculation and 12% were positive at 12 and 18 days post inoculation. One sample that was negative according to the MSV assay was positive with MIT on the 12th day. The MSV procedure exhibited a sensitivity of 96.2%, a specificity of 100%, a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value 80%. This procedure allowed for rapid rabies virus detection. MIT can be employed as an alternative method in laboratories without tissue culture facilities. 相似文献

The adaptations that occur for support and protection can be studied with regard to the optimal structure that balances these objectives with any imposed constraints. The shell inclination of terrestrial gastropods is an appropriate model to address this problem. In this study, we examined how gastropods improve shell angles to well‐balanced ones from geometrically constrained shapes. Our geometric analysis and physical analysis showed that constantly coiled shells are constrained from adopting a well‐balanced angle; the shell angle of such basic shells tends to increase as the spire index (shell height/width) increases, although the optimum angle for stability is 90° for flat shells and 0° for tall shells. Furthermore, we estimated the influences of the geometric rule and the functional demands on actual shells by measuring the shell angles of both resting and active snails. We found that terrestrial gastropods have shell angles that are suited for balance. The growth lines of the shells indicated that this adaptation depends on the deflection of the last whorl: the apertures of flat shells are deflected downward, whereas those of tall shells are deflected upward. Our observations of active snails demonstrated that the animals hold their shells at better balanced angles than inactive snails. 相似文献

[目的] 研究核桃壳提取液(walnut shell extracts,WSE)对单针藻Monoraphidium sp.QLZ-3生长和油脂积累的影响。[方法] 向BG-11培养基中添加不同量的WSE(培养基中保留有BG-11中全部营养成分)。[结果] 结果显示,当BG-11培养基中的WSE含量为40%时,单针藻的生物量产率及油脂产率达到(534.70±4.07)mg/(L·d)和(296.35±15.36)mg/(L·d),相比对照组分别提高了的14.82%和33.50%,蛋白质和碳水化合物含量分别有不同程度的上调和下调。与对照组相比,微藻中谷胱甘肽(glutathione,GSH)和超氧化物歧化酶(superoxide dismutase,SOD)含量与活性均上调。此外,WSE作用下,微藻对多酚的移除达到84.37%,同时上调了核酮糖1,5-二磷酸羧化酶基因(ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase,rbcL)和乙酰辅酶A羧化酶(acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase,accD)基因的表达量。[结论] 研究表明,WSE联合BG-11可以提高微藻的生物量产率和油脂产率,降低微藻培养的原料成本,为核桃壳的资源化利用及微藻的工业化生产提供了一定的技术支撑。 相似文献

The dynamics of a protein and the water surrounding it are coupled via nonbonded energy interactions. This coupling can exhibit a complex, nonlinear, and nonstationary nature. The THz frequency spectrum for this interaction energy characterizes both the vibration spectrum of the water hydrogen bond network, and the frequency range of large amplitude modes of proteins. We use a Recurrence Plot based Wiener–Khinchin method RPWK to calculate this spectrum, and the results are compared to those determined using the classical auto‐covariance‐based Wiener–Khinchin method WK. The frequency spectra for the total nonbonded interaction energy extracted from molecular dynamics simulations between the β‐Lactamase Inhibitory Protein BLIP, and water molecules within a 10 Å distance from the protein surface, are calculated at 150, 200, 250, and 310 K, respectively. Similar calculations are also performed for the nonbonded interaction energy between the residues 49ASP, 53TYR, and 142PHE in BLIP, with water molecules within 10 Å from each residue respectively at 150, 200, 250, and 310 K. A comparison of the results shows that RPWK performs better than WK, and is able to detect some frequency data points that WK fails to detect. This points to the importance of using methods capable of taking the complex nature of the protein–solvent energy landscape into consideration, and not to rely on standard linear methods.
