Patterns in the morphological variation of Zonorchis and Skrjabinus (Trematoda: Dicrocoelidae) from small mammals in Malaysia.

A collection of dicroceolid flukes from rats, squirrels and Tupaia in Malaysia is found to be morphologically heterogeneous. Cluster analysis on the basis of three selected body ratios distinguishes two major types comprising highly diverse Skrjabinus from rats, and homogenous Zonorchis from callosciurid squirrels. Tupaia harbours flukes of both genera. Analysis of variance of flukes from rats, demonstrates marked uniformity among worms within individual hosts. Possible effects of allometric growth are investigated by plotting each chosen dimension against body length for the two major groups of worms. Prominent changes are noted only in the relative size of testis in Skrjabinus from rats. Patterns of morphology are discussed in relation to host ecology and distribution.     

Characterization of iron-sulfur clusters in rat liver submitochondrial particles by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Alterations produced by chronic ethanol consumption

Iron-sulfur clusters present in rat liver submitochondrial particles were characterized by ESR at temperatures between 30 and 5.5 K combined with potentiometric titrations. The spectral and thermodynamic characteristics of the iron-sulfur clusters were generally similar to those previously reported for pigeon or bovine heart submitochondrial particles. Clusters N-1a, N-1b, N-2, N-3 and N-4 of NADH dehydrogenase had midpoint oxidation-reduction potentials at pH 7.5 of ?425, ?265, ?85, ?240 and ?260 mV, respectively. Clusters S-1 and S-3 of succinate dehydrogenase had midpoint potentials of 0 and +65 mV, respectively. The iron-sulfur cluster of electron-transferring flavoprotein-ubiquinone oxidoreductase exhibited the g_z signal at g = 2.08 and had a midpoint potential of +30 mV. This signal was relatively prominent in rat liver compared to pigeon or bovine heart.Submitochondrial particles from rats chronically treated with ethanol (36% of total calories, 40 days) showed decreases of 20–30% in amplitudes of signals due to clusters N-2, N-3 and N-4 compared to those from pair-fed control rats. Signals from clusters N-1b, S-1, S-3 and electron-transferring flavoprotein-ubiquinone oxidoreductase were unaffected. Microwave power-saturation behavior was similar for both submitochondrial particle preparations, suggesting that the lower signal amplitudes reflected a lower content of these particular clusters. NADH dehydrogenase activity was significantly decreased (46%), whilst succinate dehydrogenase activity was elevated (25%), following chronic ethanol consumption. The results indicate that chronic ethanol treatment leads to an alteration of the structure and function of the NADH dehydrogenase segment of the electron transfer chain. This alteration is one of the factors contributing to the lower respiration rates observed following chronic ethanol administration.     

Characterization of a new murein-associated lipoprotein in the outer membrane of Proteus mirabilis

A murein-associated outer membrane protein from Proteus mirabilis has been isolated. Since the protein carries ester- as well as amide-linked fatty acids it can be classified as a second outer membrane lipoprotein. An apparent molecular weight of 15,000 for this protein was determined from amino acid analysis and sodium dodecylsulfate/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The amino acid composition, however, does not show similarities with the amino acid composition of the lipoprotein covalently linked to murein, which has a molecular weight of 7,300 as described previously in Proteus mirabilis.Abbreviation SDS sodium dodecylsulfate     

Theoretical investigations on circular and chain-like hydrogen bonded structures found in two crystal forms of α-cyclodextrin hexahydrate: Models for hydration and water clusters

Hydration of macromolecules and the structure of water of crystallization are not understood in detail because in these complex systems. H-atoms cannot be located and the hydrogen bonding schemes are not known. X-ray and neutron diffraction studies on a hydrated oligosaccharide, α-cyclodextrin 6H₂O, ((C₆H₁₀O₅)₆·6H₂O), crystals forms A and B, gave insight into the chain-like and circular arrangement of hydrogen bonds. In the circles, homodromic (unidirectional) and antidromic (counter-running) orientation of five to six hydrogen bounds is observed. PCILO calculations showed that homodromic circles and chains are approx. 8% per hydrogen bond more stable than antidromic circles, that the changes in electronic charges on H and O atoms are greater in homo than in antidromic systems and that the dipole moments are only approx. 3 D in the homodromic circles but 6–8 D in chain-like and antidromic arrangement. These results have been interpreted in terms of cooperative effect. Circular systems are considered as structural elements in hydration shells of macromolecules and in the assembly of ‘flickering’ water clusters.     

Spray system for re-attachment of Gelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur. (Gelidiales: Rhodophyta)

A system is described for rapid re-attachment of the rhodophycean alga Gelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur. on artificial or natural substrata. This method is applicable to industrial cultivation of this species. The function of rhizoidal clusters and the origin of germlings from the apical portion of the thalli are analyzed in relation to the re-attachment process. The role that re-attachment might play in the maintenance and spreading of natural populations and in the observed anomalies of the life-history of this species is discussed.     

利用秆维管束进行中国散生竹类的聚类分析

本文是应用模糊聚类分析方法研究中国散生竹类分类的一次尝试。分类特征采用了竹秆上、中、下三段各类型维管束数,方法上使用了模糊(Fuzzy)直接聚类分析进行综合分析。经电子计算机运算后,不仅取得了与传统分类基本一致的分类结果,同时也表明这种方法较之其它一些植物数量分类方法简便易行,此外还讨论了一些中国散生竹类分类上的问题。     

Correlation of rotifer associations in a chain of lakes fed by reclaimed sewage

The quantitative composition of the rotifer fauna of seven interconnected lakes located in southern California was studied in a preliminary investigation. The lakes are fed by reclaimed sewage, and the water quality increases rapidly from the first lake, barely able to support life, to a series of lovely lakes stocked with fish and utilized for recreation. The Shannon index of rotifer population diversity showed an appropriate increase. Up to 24 – 28 different rotifer taxa in each lake provided a rich community dominated by Brachionids, Keratella and Trichocerca. The diversity and quantity of the rotifer association then declined again in the last lake. Comparison of the lakes using the Bray and Curtis index of similarity and cluster analysis supported the picture of a lake-chain evolution, a biotic development showing a maximum curve.
