《Harmful algae》2019
The aim of the present research was to summarize the main reasons that explain the distribution of harmful blooms of cyanobacteria in Argentina. It is a large territory with climates ranging from humid tropical to cold temperate. We performed a meta-analysis of the published data and information in technical reports published from 1945 to 2015, and included additional data from personal non-published studies. A total of 122 water bodies affected by planktonic cyanobacterial blooms were recorded and geo-referenced. The analysis showed that blooms, defined as events exceeding 5000 cells/mL, occurred in different types of water bodies, including shallow lakes, rivers, streams, reservoirs, estuaries and storage facilities. Maximum bloom abundance and species and ecological strategies (dispersive, scum-forming, nitrogen fixer) responsible for each event were related to the geographic and climatologic characteristics and type and origin of water bodies. The Puna and the Andean Patagonia eco-regions were mostly free of blooms. The most impaired aquatic systems were shallow lakes and reservoirs (46.7 and 24.6%, respectively). Deep lakes had no reports of blooms and rivers were mainly affected at the regulated reaches, with intensities generally decreasing downstream the dams. Besides, 74.3% of the blooms reported in Argentina exceeded WHO Alert Level 2 for drinking and bathing waters (100,000 cells/mL). Thirty-nine species, identified by Komárek’s polyphasic approach to taxonomy, were responsible for the blooms. Microcystis aeruginosa, Dolichospermum spiroides, Dolichospermum circinale, Raphidiopsis mediterranea and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii were frequently found participating in either mixed or single species blooms. The species distribution was associated with the eco-region and aquatic system typologies and affected by seasonality and climatological and geographic variables. The eco-strategies of cyanobacterial species showed stronger associations with the qualitative and quantitative indicators used in the meta-analysis, and appeared as useful tools for management measures. 相似文献

There have been few investigations of the number of founding sources and amount of genetic variability that lead to a successful nonindigenous species invasion, although genetic diversity is believed to play a central role. In the present study, population genetic structure, diversity and divergence patterns were analysed for the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha [n=280 samples and 63 putative randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPDs) gene loci] and the quagga mussel D. bugensis (n=136 and 52 loci) from 10 nonindigenous North American and six Eurasian sampling sites, representing their present‐day ranges. Results showed that exotic populations of zebra and quagga mussels had surprisingly high genetic variability, similar to those in the Eurasian populations, suggesting large numbers of founding individuals and consistent with the hypothesis of multiple colonizations. Patterns of genetic relationships indicate that the North American populations of D. polymorpha likely were founded by multiple source populations from north‐western and northcentral Europe, but not from southcentral or eastern Europe. Sampling areas within North America also were significantly divergent, having levels of gene flow and migration about twice those separating long‐established Eurasian populations. Samples of D. bugensis in Lakes Erie and Ontario were significantly different, with the former being more closely related to a native population from the Dnieper River, Ukraine. Community composition, including the relative density of each host species, plays a vital role in the transmission of parasites or disease in freshwater ecosystems. Whereas some host species can effectively transmit parasites, others can act as dead ends (non-viable transmission routes), accumulating large numbers of parasites throughout their life, thus becoming important sinks for parasite populations. Although population sinks have been identified in certain host-parasite systems, robust field estimates of the proportions of parasites that are lost to these hosts are lacking. Here, we quantified the distribution of encysted larval hairworms (phylum Nematomorpha), common parasites in lotic ecosystems, in two subalpine stream communities of New Zealand. With parasite and host population densities calculated per m2, we identified which host species most likely contributed to the transmission of three sympatric hairworm morphotypes identified in both streams, and which species acted as population sinks. We also tested for seasonal patterns and peaks in the abundance of each morphotype in the two communities over the sampling season. Finally, we tested whether hosts emerging from the streams had comparable abundances of hairworm morphotypes throughout the sampling period. For each morphotype, different key sets of host species harboured more hairworms on average (abundance) than others, depending on the stream. For one morphotype in particular, two species of hosts were found to be important population sinks that inhibited over a third of these parasites from completing their life cycle. We also observed a clear peak in abundance for another hairworm morphotype during summer. Our data suggest that hosts emerging from the streams matched their aquatic counterparts with respect to hairworm abundance, indicating no infection-dependent reduction in emergence success. Our findings suggest that, depending on relative community composition, sympatric parasites follow different host transmission pathways, some of which lead to dead ends that potentially impact overall infection dynamics. In turn, this information can help us understand the spread or emergence of disease in both freshwater and terrestrial environments, since hairworms infect terrestrial arthropods to complete their life cycle. 相似文献

Mussel (Mytilus californianus) adhesion to marine surfaces involves an intricate and adaptive synergy of molecules and spatio-temporal processes. Although the molecules, such as mussel foot proteins (mfps), are well characterized, deposition details remain vague and speculative. Developing methods for the precise surveillance of conditions that apply during mfp deposition would aid both in understanding mussel adhesion and translating this adhesion into useful technologies. To probe the interfacial pH at which mussels buffer the local environment during mfp deposition, a lipid bilayer with tethered pH-sensitive fluorochromes was assembled on mica. The interfacial pH during foot contact with modified mica ranged from 2.2 to 3.3, which is well below the seawater pH of ~ 8. The acidic pH serves multiple functions: it limits mfp-Dopa oxidation, thereby enabling the catecholic functionalities to adsorb to surface oxides by H-bonding and metal ion coordination, and provides a solubility switch for mfps, most of which aggregate at pH ≥ 7–8. 相似文献

Seven polymorphic and four monomorphic allozyme loci were assayed from nine wild populations and one cultured population of the endemic New Zealand greenshell mussel, Perna canaliculus. Genetic variation was examined to determine the extent of intra-population subdivision and inter-population variability. Five of seven polymorphic loci exhibited significant heterozygote deficiencies compared to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Population F-statistics indicated that significant genetic heterogeneity exists among populations, indicating that there is insufficient gene flow between geographically isolated populations to create panmixia. The observed genetic heterogeneity among populations is best explained by an isolation-by-distance model of gene flow, which is modified by localized hydrographic conditions. These preliminary findings are discussed in the context of the one previous survey of population genetic variation in P. canaliculus and how this information relates to the gene flow of the greenshell mussel in New Zealand, which is often mediated by human transport from the main collection site of Kaitaia to aquaculture sites throughout the country. 相似文献

at Tiruchirapalli were analysed for40K activity. The highest level of40K activity was found in the sediment (342 mBq g-1 dry weight) and the lowest activity was found in water (2·209 mBq ml−1). In the freshwater musselParreysia favidens (Benson)40K activity was estimated in the total soft tissues and shells of mussels belonging to three different size groups. In all
the size groups40K activity was two times higher in shells (68–39 mBq g-1 fresh weight) than in the total soft tissues (25–17 mBq g-1 fresh weight). The results indicate that the younger mussels accumulated more40K than the older ones. The ability of internal organs of mussels belonging to group III to accumulate40K was in the following order: gills > digestive gland > foot > mantle. The values ranged from 47 to 18 mBq g−1 fresh weight in the various organs. Bitterling are fishes that use freshwater mussels for oviposition. The reproductive ecology and pattern of mussel utilization
of four sympatric species of bitterling, Acheilognathus rhombeus, A. tabira tabira, Tanakia lanceolata, and T. limbata, were investigated in a lowland river with seven sympatric mussel species. Three bitterling species are spring spawners with
overlapping spawning seasons. A. rhombeus is an autumn-spawning species and is temporally isolated in its reproduction from the other species. Ovipositor length during
oviposition of T. limbata and T. lanceolata was short, while those of A. tabira tabira and A. rhombeus were long. Most T. limbata inhabited near-shore areas, whereas the two other spring-spawning species were distributed across the entire river. All bitterling
species used Inversidens brandti, Obovalis omiensis and Inversiunio jokohamensis as spawning hosts, but not the other mussel species available. T. lanceolata, A. tabira tabira and A. rhombeus showed spawning preferences for O. omiensis and I. brandti. However, T. limbata did not show clear preferences for any of the mussel species they used. The LWRs (length–weight relationships) of four freshwater fish species from medium categorized Doyang reservoir at Wokha District, Nagaland were studied, namely as Garra naganensis Hora, 1921; Devario naganensis Chaudhuri, 1912; Chagunius nicholsi Myers, 1924 and Schistura manipurensis Chaudhuri, 1912.
