Seven species of freshwater algae were grown in defined media in monoalgal and mixed cultures, to test whether species interactions and community efficiency were predictable on the basis of ecological theory. Results supported the prediction of competitive interactions, although no differences were detectable in the strength of competition in two and three species mixed cultures, nor was the severity of competitive effects predictable on the basis of relatedness at the level of phyla. On a community level, cultures with two and three species fixed a greater proportion of available carbon than cultures with only one species, implying a more efficient overall use of available resources. Implications for the design of artificial closed ecosystems are discussed.  相似文献

  1. We used a 27-year record of Dreissena populations in the freshwater tidal Hudson River to describe interannual variation in population density, body size, and body condition; estimate long-term variation in recruitment, survivorship, and shell growth; and assess possible controls on the populations.
  2. Dreissena populations in the Hudson have been highly variable, with interannual ranges of c. 100-fold in abundance and biomass, and 7-fold in mean body mass. This large interannual variation arises from both long-term trends and 2–5-year cycles.
  3. Long-term trends include the 2008 appearance of the quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis), which still forms a small part (<10%) of the dreissenid community, and a decline in zebra mussel body size. The decline in body size was caused by a long-term decline in adult survivorship rather than a decline in rates of shell growth. We could detect no long-term trends in adult abundance or spread of Dreissena onto soft sediments in the Hudson.
  4. We observed persistent, strong cycles in adult abundance and body size. These were driven by the appearance and decay of eight dominant year classes over the 27 years of our study, and were a result of temporal variation in recruitment rather than temporal variation in survivorship. The observed strongly irregular recruitment appears to arise from strong adult–larval interactions, and is consistent with previous simulation model results showing that interactions between adults and larvae can drive persistent cycling.
  5. We found evidence that negative density dependence affects recruitment, somatic growth, and body condition of Dreissena in the Hudson. Warm summers may also cause high adult mortality.
  6. We put our results into the context of a conceptual model of Dreissena population dynamics, and argue that neither the dynamics nor the controls of populations of these important invaders is known satisfactorily.

The effect of exposure to copper in seawater (0.005, 0.01, and 0.02 mg/liter) on the development of Mytilus trossulus was examined in the stages of fertilization, blastula, early veliger, veliger, and veliconch. Copper in a concentration of 0.01 and 0.02 mg/liter inhibited the development and growth of the embryos and larvae. At 0.005 mg Cu/liter, the embryos and larvae were capable of adaptation. If M. trossulus embryos and larvae were maintained for 1–2 days in seawater containing 0.01 mg Cu/liter and then transferred to clean water, the consequences were largely dependent on the developmental stage at which the exposure to copper took place. Plankton samples and gut contents of P. margaritifera were analysed monthly from April 1972 to March 1973. Coscinodiscus sp. was the most ingested food by pearl oysters of all ages. However, food variety increased as the oyster grew older. Experiments confirmed the absence of food selectivity in P. margaritifera. Unlike the young ones, the adult showed reduced growth during summer (July–September), which coincides with its spawning season.  相似文献

Ectotherm species are not capable of generating metabolic heat; therefore, they present different strategies for regulating their body temperatures, ranging from a precise degree of thermoregulation to a passive thermoconformity with ambient temperatures. In reptiles, aerial basking is the most common mechanism for gaining heat. However, among aquatic reptiles, such as freshwater turtles, aquatic basking is also frequent. Hydromedusa tectifera is a turtle of exclusively aquatic and nocturnal habits widely distributed in South America. We studied the relationship between body temperature (Tb) of H. tectifera and its habitat, and explored the effects of sex, life stage and body size and mass on Tb. Fieldwork was conducted in two streams of a mountain area of central Argentina. We recorded cloacal temperature, size and mass of 84 turtles. We also determined individuals’ sex and life stage (adult/juvenile). Regarding ambient temperatures, we measured water temperature on the surface (Tsurf) and at depth of turtle capture (Tdepth) and air temperature. Mean Tb was 18.58 °C (Min = 10.20 °C; Max = 25.70 °C). Tsurf and Tdepth were highly correlated. Multi-model analysis using Akaike criterion indicated that Tb was strongly associated with water temperature, whereas air temperature and body size and mass did not show a significant effect. There was also no effect of turtle sex or life stage on Tb. Our results indicate that H. tectifera is a thermoconformer and eurythermal species. A nocturnal pattern of activity and a fully aquatic lifestyle are suggested as determinant factors.  相似文献

Social and scientific factors are deeply enmeshed in each other within the development and the use of ecological indicators (EI). Yet low research has assessed which factors contribute to selecting ecological indicators on the long-term. This article proposes to study the historical construction of EI by examining ecological, political, and social background of specific places where EI were developed, in France on lakes and rivers. Our major findings in France were that ecological indicators were never optimised for the present market or political arena. Instead EI development was typically recycling previous tools that were elaborated for other purposes by environmentally committed outsiders, without regular funding. We found that regular funding for monitoring an EI was only provided when it matched an institution's goal. Beyond the geographically limited relevance of the case studies, these results therefore improve the theoretical framework we deploy when constructing or relying on indicators.  相似文献

We examined changes in G. semen occurrence and bloom incidence in 146 boreal lakes in Sweden sampled at least once between 1992 and 2010, and used a time-by-space model to assess the environmental variables that best explain patterns in G. semen distribution and bloom formation.We showed that G. semen has become more common, although there were no significant shifts in its geographical distribution during the study period. In particular, G. semen was spreading into new lakes in the Central Plains ecoregion (southern Sweden), whereas its occurrence and biomass usually remained low in the Borealic Upland and Fennoscandian Shield ecoregions.G. semen biomass and the incidence of blooms did not increase significantly during the study period, but fluctuated among years and reached a maximum in 2003. The occurrence of G. semen was mainly explained by temperature and the length of the growing season, whilst local-scale variables, such as pH and water color, were the best predictors of blooms.Analysis of bloom formation at three different levels of G. semen dominance: G. semen >50%, >75%, and >90% of total phytoplankton biomass revealed a wide range of responses to environmental variation. For example, pH, water color and to a lesser extent temperature explained bloom formation at the 50% level, whereas lake morphometry was important at the 90% level.These results suggest that with ongoing brownification and climate warming boreal systems will likely become more susceptible to invasions of G. semen.  相似文献

Metagenomic analysis of biofilm forming bacteria in environmental samples remains challenging due to the non-availability of gene sequences of most of the uncultivable bacteria. Sequences of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1-UW genes involved either directly or indirectly in biofilm formation were analyzed using BLASTn to obtain matching sequences from different strain, species and genus. Conserved regions in the functional domain of the amino acid sequences were used to design common primers for direct PCR analysis of freshwater metagenomes. Seven key genes such as aceA, clpP, typA, cbrA, phoR, rpoS and gacA involved in biofilm formation were validated. The ortholog genes belonged to wide range of Pseudomonas sp. indicating the diversity of biofilm genes and the conservation of protein functional domains. The approach would also help in analyzing the expression of biofilm genes in different bacteria of freshwater systems for monitoring toxic contaminations such as organic or inorganic pollutants.  相似文献

The Red-Claw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus von Martens, is native to freshwater habitats of northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Owing to its large size and suitability for aquaculture, C. quadricarinatus has been widely translocated around the world. Unfortunately, C. quadricarinatus is also recognised as invasive, having already established feral populations in South Africa, Mexico, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The hardiness and conspicuous colouration of C. quadricarinatus has also made it popular in the aquarium trade worldwide, including Singapore. Here, we report the establishment of feral populations of C. quadricarinatus in the water supply catchments of Singapore.  相似文献

The first reports of wild caught Australian redclaw crayfish from Mexico, in the states of Morelos and Tamaulipas, are presented. Redclaw crayfish were first brought to Mexico in 1995 to initiate experimental cultures at several research centers. In the following years a number of private ventures started commercial cultures, several of which in the states of Morelos and Tamaulipas are thought to have been the sources for the wild populations recorded in this study. The farms that acted as the original sources have not been operating for at least 2 years. In Morelos, high densities and all size classes of redclaws, including ovigerous females, were captured in natural waterways; whereas in Tamaulipas they were found at four sites occurring in irrigation canals in an agricultural district. The size attained by the wild redclaws, the abiotic conditions in which they were found and the potential for spread within the drainage systems of the Balsas and Tamesi Rivers are discussed.  相似文献
