Paternal kin discrimination: the evidence and likely mechanisms 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Widdig A 《Biological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society》2007,82(2):319-334
One of the most important assumptions of kin selection theory is that individuals behave differently towards kin than non-kin. In mammals, there is strong evidence that maternal kin are distinguished from non-kin via familiarity. However, little is known about whether or not mammals can also recognize paternal kin as many female mammals, including primates, mate with multiple males near the time of conception, potentially concealing paternal kinship. Genetic data in several mammalian species with a promiscuous mating system and male-biased dispersal reveal a high skew in male reproduction which leads to co-residing paternal half-siblings. In most primates, individuals also form stable bisexual groups creating opportunities for males to interact with their offspring. Here I consider close paternal kin co-resident in the same social group, such as father-offspring and paternal half-siblings (i.e. animals sharing the same father but who were born to different mothers) and review mammalian studies of paternal kin discrimination. Furthermore, I summarize the most likely mechanisms of paternal kin discrimination (familiarity and phenotype matching). When familiarity is the underlying mechanism, mothers and/or the sire could mediate familiarity among paternal half-siblings as well as between fathers and offspring assuming mothers and/or fathers can assess paternity. When animals use phenotype matching, they might use their fathers' template (when the father is present) or self (when the father is absent) to assess paternal kinship in others. Available evidence suggests that familiarity and phenotype matching might be used for paternal kin discrimination and that both mechanisms might apply to a wide range of social mammals characterized by a high skew in male reproduction and co-residence of paternal kin. Among primates, suggested evidence for phenotype matching can often have an alternative explanation, which emphasizes the crucial importance of controlling for familiarity as a potential confounding variable. However, the mechanism/s used to identify paternal kin might differ within a species (as a function of each individual's specific circumstances) as well as among species (depending upon the key sensory modalities of the species considered). Finally, I discuss the possible cues used in paternal kin discrimination and offer suggestions for future studies. 相似文献

We present a case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the placenta of healthy baboon (Papio spp.). Grossly, the fetal, maternal, and placental tissues were unremarkable. Histologically, the placenta contained an unencapsulated, poorly demarcated, infiltrative, solidly cellular neoplasm composed of cells that resembled hepatocytes. The neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for vimentin and focally positive for Ae1/Ae3, Arginase ‐1, glutamine synthetase, and CD10, and negative for ER, vascular markers (CD31 and D240), S100, glypican, C‐reactive protein, FABP, desmin, and beta‐catenin; INI1 positivity was similar to non‐neoplastic tissues. The case likely represents a unique subtype of HCC. 相似文献

Animals often have a limited time to perform different fitness‐enhancing activities, such as the trade‐off between socializing versus foraging in group‐living species. Many previous studies have focused on how ecological and social factors influence activity budget at the individual or group level in various species. However, few primate studies have focused on multiple study groups living within a similar habitat. Here, we analyse group, season and sex effects on the individual activity budget of wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) living in four groups with overlapping home ranges. Generally, our findings support previous studies on primates. Our results indicate that intragroup competition may force larger groups to spend more time feeding and less time resting. We also found that seasonal variation, and therefore food availability, has a strong influence on the monkeys’ activity budget. Females, which are the philopatric sex in vervet monkeys, spent more time socializing while, in general, males spent more time resting. However, we did not find any difference on the time spent socializing between groups. Since there is evidence that not only time constraints and habitat quality but also group size influence individual behaviours and ultimately group living, we advise that future studies should focus on multiple groups of the same species living in the same habitat in order to better understand how all these variables are interlinked. 相似文献

Inferring biogenic and anthropogenic carbon dioxide sources across an urban to rural gradient 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We continuously monitored CO2 concentrations at three locations along an urban-to-rural gradient in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah from 2004 to 2006. The results
showed a range of CO2 concentrations from daily averages exceeding 500 p.p.m. at the city center to much lower concentrations in a non-urbanized,
rural region of the valley. The highest values were measured in the wintertime and under stable atmospheric conditions. At
all three sites, we utilized weekly measurements of the C and O isotope composition of CO2 for a 1-year period to evaluate the CO2 sources underlying spatial and temporal variability in CO2 concentrations. The results of an inverse analysis of CO2 sources and the O isotope composition of ecosystem respiration (δ18
O
R) showed large contributions (>50%) of natural gas combustion to atmospheric CO2 in the wintertime, particularly at the city center, and large contributions (>60%) of biogenic respiration to atmospheric
CO2 during the growing season, particularly at the rural site. δ18
O
R was most enriched at the rural site and more isotopically depleted at the urban sites due to the effects of irrigation on
ecosystem water pools at the urban sites. The results also suggested differences in the role of leaf versus soil respiration
between the two urban sites, with seasonal variation in the contribution of leaf respiration at a residential site and relatively
constant contributions of leaf respiration at the city center. These results illustrate that spatial and temporal patterns
of urban CO2 concentrations and isotopic composition can be used to infer patterns of energy use by urban residents as well as plant and
soil processes in urban areas. 相似文献

Immunogenicity of a DNA prime and recombinant adenovirus boost regime significantly varies between rhesus macaques of Chinese and Indian origins 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

BACKGROUND: Due to an ever increasing shortage of rhesus macaques of Indian origin (InR) that have been generally used for preclinical AIDS vaccine trials in non-human primates, demand is rising for Chinese rhesus macaques (ChR). However, the immunogenicity of an AIDS vaccine candidate has not been compared in parallel in both rhesus macaque subspecies. METHODS: ChR and InR were immunized with SIV/HIV DNA and adenovirus vaccine and their immune responses to SIV and HIV evaluated. RESULTS: SIV Gag- and Env-specific T-cell responses and SIV-specific lymphoproliferative responses measured in ChR were significantly weaker than those in InR (P < 0.05). By contrast, antibody responses to SIV Env, Tat, and Nef in ChR were stronger than those in InR (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Immunogenicity of an AIDS vaccine can vary significantly depending on the geographic origin implying genetic differences of macaques. This must be considered when describing and interpreting results of such vaccine studies. 相似文献

Freeze-dried and frozen particulate bone allografts are used interchangeably on the assumption that the biologic behavior of these grafts is similar. Dissimilarities in biologic behavior and differences in the rate and extent of bone incorporation of freeze-dried and frozen particulate grafts were demonstrated in a comparative study using a non-human primate model. Freeze-dried particulate allografts induced new bone formation and healing of the osseous defects much faster than the frozen allografts. 相似文献

Evidence for coevolution of sociality and relative brain size in three orders of mammals 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Pérez-Barbería FJ Shultz S Dunbar RI 《Evolution; international journal of organic evolution》2007,61(12):2811-2821
As the brain is responsible for managing an individual's behavioral response to its environment, we should expect that large relative brain size is an evolutionary response to cognitively challenging behaviors. The "social brain hypothesis" argues that maintaining group cohesion is cognitively demanding as individuals living in groups need to be able to resolve conflicts that impact on their ability to meet resource requirements. If sociality does impose cognitive demands, we expect changes in relative brain size and sociality to be coupled over evolutionary time. In this study, we analyze data on sociality and relative brain size for 206 species of ungulates, carnivores, and primates and provide, for the first time, evidence that changes in sociality and relative brain size are closely correlated over evolutionary time for all three mammalian orders. This suggests a process of coevolution and provides support for the social brain theory. However, differences between taxonomic orders in the stability of the transition between small-brained/nonsocial and large-brained/social imply that, although sociality is cognitively demanding, sociality and relative brain size can become decoupled in some cases. Carnivores seem to have been especially prone to this. 相似文献

Seasonality of reproduction is believed to be influenced by environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and photoperiod. In primates, there has been much speculation about which environmental factors have the greatest influence on reproductive seasonality. To determine whether environmental factors affect seasonality of reproduction of squirrel monkeys in captivity, I used path analysis to compare number of births and matings per month with monkeys kept in indoor enclosures (maintained at optimal temperatures) and those kept in outdoor enclosures (exposed to the elements). Since a different pattern of seasonality was found to occur, I was able to test whether temperature, rainfall, or photoperiod could explain the temporal variation in reproduction. Squirrel monkeys raised in captivity displayed different patterns of seasonality of reproduction, depending on the conditions in which they are housed ( chi(2)3 25.12, P<0.001; G = 28.10, P<0.001). Temperature seemed to have a large impact on number of births and matings per month (matings: path coefficient = 0.799; births: path coefficient = -1.315). Understanding what factors regulate reproduction for animals and how these factors affect reproduction differently in wild versus captive populations are important to conservation and management of species. 相似文献
