通过构建分子钟对广义柏科主要分类群的起源时间进行探讨。采用相对速率检验法分析广义柏科mat K、rbc L进化速率的稳定性,结果显示rbc L的非同义替代速率只在Pinaceae与Taxodiaceae的分类群及柏科北半球的支系(Cupressoideae)之间通过相对速率检验,而Pinaceae与柏科南半球分支(Callitrodeae)之间没有通过相对速率检验。mar K基因的非同义替代速率在Pinaceae与广义柏科的所有分类群之间通过相对速率检验。根据通过相对速率检验的分类群之间的遗传距离和基因进化速率,计算它们发生分歧的时间。据此推测,杉科的主要分类群Taiwanioideae、Athrotaxidoideae、Sequoioideae与其他分支发生分歧的时间均在侏罗纪,支持现存杉科在侏罗纪就已经建立起来的观点;Cupressaceae(s.s.)的两个支系(亚科)发生分歧的时间在124Ma之前,相当于早白垩世早期,可能由于南北古大陆的完全分离,其祖先居群被分隔成两个亚群,随后各自演化为不同的支系。Callitirodeae、Cupressoideae各属发生分歧的时间也均在白垩纪,表明Cupressaceae(s.s.)在白垩纪就已经建立起来。  相似文献

Vertebral and cranial remains of elapid snakes have been collected from fossil assemblages at Riversleigh, north-west Queensland, Australia; most are Miocene but one may be late Oligocene and another as young as Pliocene. The oldest specimen (probably the oldest elapid yet known anywhere) is a vertebra that can be referred provisionally to the extant taxon Laticauda (Hydrophiinae, sensu Slowinski and Keogh, 2000), implying that the basal divergences among Australasian hydrophiine lineages had occurred by the early Miocene, in contrast to most previous estimates for the age of this geographically isolated adaptive radiation. Associated vertebrae and jaw elements from a Late Miocene deposit are described as Incongruelaps iteratus nov. gen. et sp., which has a unique combination of unusual derived characters otherwise found separately in several extant hydrophiine taxa that are only distantly related. Associated vertebrae from other sites, and two parietals from a possibly Pliocene deposit, suggest the presence of several other taxa distinct from extant forms, but the amount of material (and knowledge of variation in extant taxa) is currently insufficient to diagnose these forms. The Tertiary elapids of Riversleigh thus appear to be relatively diverse taxonomically, but low in abundance and, with one exception, not referable to extant taxa below the level of Hydrophiinae. This implies that the present diversity of hydrophiine elapids (31 recognized terrestrial genera, and approximately 16 marine) represents the result of substantial extinction as well as the “cone of increasing diversity” that could be inferred from phylogenetic studies on extant forms.  相似文献

Leptin was originally thought to be an antiobesity hormone, but increasing evidence suggests that its ancestral role was to mobilize neuroendocrine responses to starvation. Research on wild primates is critical for interpreting the high leptin values seen in Western human populations and captive animals. This study examined natural variation in serum leptin in wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops), testing the hypothesis that serum leptin in vervets varies with sex, adiposity, ecology, and reproductive state. Analyses made use of a unique dataset comprised of serum and morphometric measurements obtained from vervet monkeys in four Kenyan sites differing in altitude, temperature, rainfall, and access to human foods. Leptin and gonadal steroid concentrations were analyzed in serum samples from 116 adults. Low leptin levels in males and acyclic females support the contention that levels seen in captivity are not typical for wild primates. Measures of adiposity were not correlated with serum leptin, reflecting the extremely low fat storage in wild cercopithecine primates. Associations with habitat and season, however, indicate that leptin does register ecological variation in energy balance. Leptin levels were higher in sites and seasons with higher rainfall. Moreover, leptin varied significantly with reproductive state, with higher levels in pregnant than in acyclic females. Changes in leptin with gestation stage and duration of lactation suggest that transitory and reversible elevations were an important part of its ancestral role. These data show that in this wild primate population leptin is a sensitive index of natural variation in habitat and seasonally fluctuating reproductive state.  相似文献

More than 70 sites have yielded human fossils in China. They are attributed to Homo sapiens erectus and Homo sapiens sapiens. The earliest one is possibly about 1.7 Ma. A series of common morphological features, including shovel-shaped incisors and flatness of the face, characterize them. There is a morphological mosaic between H. s. erectus and H. s. sapiens in China. The existence of common features and the morphological mosaic suggest continuity of human evolution in China. That there are a few features which are more commonly seen in the Neanderthal lineage, occurring in a few Chinese fossil skulls, probably suggests gene flow between China and the West. Based on them, in 1998 I proposed an hypothesis—continuity with hybridization—for human evolution in China. The hypothesis is supported by paleolithic archeology, and it supports the multiregional evolution hypothesis of modern human origins. The anatomically modern humans of East Asia originated most probably in China. Although some nonhuman anthropoid primates of China—Gigantopithecus, Sivapithecus, Ramapithecus and Lufengpithecus—have been suggested as the direct ancestors of human beings, the discovery of more specimens and further studies do not support these suggestions. Therefore, it is most probable that the transition between apes and humans did not occur in China.  相似文献

Research on mirror self-recognition where animals are observed for mirror-guided self-directed behaviour has predominated the empirical approach to self-awareness in nonhuman primates. The ability to direct behaviour to previously unseen parts of the body such as the inside of the mouth, or grooming the eye by aid of mirrors has been interpreted as recognition of self and evidence of a self-concept. Three decades of research has revealed that contrary to monkeys, most great apes (humans, common chimpanzees, pygmy chimpanzees and orangutans but not the gorilla) have convincingly displayed the capacity to recognize self by mirrors. The putative discontinuity in phylogeny of the ability suggests the existence of a so-called cognitive gap between great apes and the rest of the animal kingdom. However, methodological and theoretical inconsistencies regarding the empirical approach prevail. For instance, the observation of self-directed behaviour might not be as straightforward as it seems. In addition, the interpretation of mirror self-recognition as an index of self-awareness is challenged by alternative explanations, raising doubt about some assumptions behind mirror self-recognition. To evaluate the significance of the test in discussions of the concept of self this paper presents and analyses some major arguments raised on the mirror task.  相似文献

Most mammals use lateral sequence gaits during quadrupedal locomotion, a pattern characterized by the touchdown of a forelimb directly following the ipsilateral hind limb in a given stride cycle. Primates, however, tend to use diagonal sequence (DS) gaits, whereby it is the touchdown of a contralateral forelimb that follows that of a given hind limb most closely in time. A number of scenarios have been offered to explain why primates favor DS gaits, most of them relating to the use of the arboreal habitat and, in particular, the exploitation of a narrow branch niche. This experimental study explores the potential explanation for the use of DS gaits by examining the relationship between branch diameter and gait patterns in 360 strides collected from six species of quadrupedal strepsirrhine primates on broad and narrow diameter supports. Gait sequence is quantified using limb phase, or the percentage of time during a stride cycle that a forelimb touchdown follows an ipsilateral hind limb touchdown. Although Loris, Nycticebus and Eulemur rubriventer individuals in this study did exhibit significantly lower locomotor velocities on narrower supports (P<0.01 in all three species), analyses of covariance showed no significant differences in limb phase values between broad and narrow diameter supports. Hence, results indicate surprisingly little evidence to suggest that alterations in gait sequence pattern provide a specific advantage for negotiating narrow supports.  相似文献

Testate amoebae are amoeboid protists inhabiting a test (shell). They occur globally in soils, wetlands and freshwater, especially peats and mosses. They are of ancient origin, dating from at least the Mesozoic, with possible ancestors as old as the Neoproterozoic. Approximately 2,000 taxa have been described—a number which could easily rise to 4,000 with comprehensive recording. Whilst many protists appear to be cosmopolitan as morphospecies, some of the larger testate species (exceeding 100 μm) have long been considered, controversially, to be geographically restricted. Definitive conclusions have often been confounded by gaps in distributional data and misidentification. Recent increases in recording from previously little known regions, and the rise of molecular taxonomy, have started to resolve outstanding issues—processes still far from complete. Accordingly, biogeographical studies have concentrated on “flagship” species—those which can be identified with certainty and are sufficiently recorded to determine their ecological ranges. Apodera vas (Certes) has been proved to be largely restricted to the Gondwanaland continents and sub-Antarctic islands, but absent from the Holartic despite the availability of much suitable habitat. An early analysis postulated a Mesozoic origin of the species and a distribution influenced by continental drift. Recent molecular evidence could imply a later origin. Either way, its current distribution is clearly influenced by the pattern of global wind currents and lack of lowland tropical habitat. By contrast a “Gondwana-tropical” group of species appears to be restricted to latitudes unaffected by glaciation. Instances of local endemism, such as restriction to a single island, are also known, which await molecular evidence for substantiation. Special Issue: Protist diversity and geographic distribution. While the activation of primary somatosensory (SI) cortex during pain perception is consistently reported in functional imaging studies on normal subjects and chronic pain patients, the specific roles of SI, particularly the subregions within SI, in the processing of sensory aspects of pain are still largely unknown. Using optical imaging of intrinsic signal (OIS) and single unit electrophysiology, we studied cortical activation patterns within SI cortex (among Brodmann areas 3a, 3b and 1) and signal amplitude changes to various intensities of non-nociceptive, thermal nociceptive and mechanical nociceptive stimulation of individual distal finerpads in anesthetized squirrel monkeys. We have demonstrated that areas 3a and 1 are preferentially involved in the processing of nociceptive information while areas 3b and 1 are preferentially activated in the processing of non-nociceptive (touch) information. Nociceptive activations of individual fingerpad were organized topographically suggesting that nociceptive topographic map exits in areas 3a and 1. Signal amplitude was enhanced to increasing intensity of mechanical nociceptive stimuli in areas 3a, 3b and 1. Within area 1, nociceptive response co-localizes with the non-nociceptive response. Therefore, we hypothesize that nocicepitve information is area-specifically represented within SI cortex, in which nociceptive inputs are preferentially represented in areas 3a and 1 while non-nociceptive inputs are preferentially represented in areas 3b and 1.  相似文献
