Assimilation of nitrogen dioxide in response to fumigation with 15 N-labelled nitrogen dioxide was studied in 217 plant taxa. The taxa included 50 wild herbaceous plants collected from roadsides (42 genera, 15 families), 60 cultivated herbaceous plants (55 genera, 30 families) and 107 cultivated woody plants (74 genera, 45 families). Two parameters, the 'NO2 -N content', or NO2 -derived reduced nitrogen content in fumigated plant leaves (mg N g–1 dry weight), and the 'NO2 -utilization index', or percentage of the NO2 -derived reduced nitrogen in the total reduced nitrogen, were determined. The NO2 -N content differed 657-fold between the highest ( Eucalyptus viminalis ; 6·57) and lowest ( Tillandsia ionantha and T. caput-medusae ; 0·01) values in the 217 taxa; 62-fold in a family (Theaceae) and 26-fold in a species ( Solidago altissima ). Nine species had NO2 -utilization indices greater than 10%, of which Magnolia kobus , Eucalyptus viminalis , Populus nigra , Nicotiana tabacum and Erechtites hieracifolia had NO2 -N contents > 4·9. These plants can be considered 'NO2 -philic' because in them NO2 -nitrogen has an important function(s). The Compositae and Myrtaceae had high values for both parameters, whereas the monocots and gymnosperms had low ones. These findings suggest that the metabolic pathway of NO2 -nitrogen differs among plant species. 1. Understanding the trophic status of consumers in freshwater habitats is central to understanding their ecological roles and significance. Tadpoles are a diverse and abundant component of many freshwater habitats, yet we know relatively little about their feeding ecology and true trophic status compared with many other consumer groups. While many tadpole species are labelled herbivores or detritivores, there is surprisingly little evidence to support these trophic assignments. 2. Here we discuss shortcomings in our knowledge of the feeding ecology and trophic status of tadpoles and provide suggestions and examples of how we can more accurately quantify their trophic status and ecological significance. 3. Given the catastrophic amphibian declines that are ongoing in many regions of the planet, there is a sense of urgency regarding this information. Understanding the varied ecological roles of tadpoles will allow for more effective conservation of remaining populations, benefit captive breeding programmes, and allow for more accurate predictions of the ecological consequences of their losses. 相似文献

The relationship between genotype (which is inherited) and phenotype (the target of selection) is mediated by environmental inputs on gene expression, trait development, and phenotypic integration. Phenotypic plasticity or epigenetic modification might influence evolution in two general ways: (1) by stimulating evolutionary responses to environmental change via population persistence or by revealing cryptic genetic variation to selection, and (2) through the process of genetic accommodation, whereby natural selection acts to improve the form, regulation, and phenotypic integration of novel phenotypic variants. We provide an overview of models and mechanisms for how such evolutionary influences may be manifested both for plasticity and epigenetic marking. We point to promising avenues of research, identifying systems that can best be used to address the role of plasticity in evolution, as well as the need to apply our expanding knowledge of genetic and epigenetic mechanisms to our understanding of how genetic accommodation occurs in nature. NADH-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH. EC 1. 4. 1.2) was isolated from the needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylverstris L.) grown on a rural and on a heavily polluted industrial area, and it was purified about 500 fold. The community structure and physiological characteristics of three microbial mat communities in Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) were compared. One of the mats was located at the edge of a stream and was dominated by diatoms (with a thin basal layer of oscillatorian cyanobacteria), whereas the other two mats, located over moist soil and the bottom of a pond, respectively, were dominated by cyanobacteria throughout their vertical profiles. The predominant xanthophyll was fucoxanthin in the stream mat and myxoxanthophyll in the cyanobacteria-dominated mats. The sheath pigment scytonemin was absent in the stream mat but present in the soil and pond mats. The stream mat showed significantly lower delta13C and higher delta15N values than the other two mats. Consistent with the delta15N values, N2 fixation was negligible in the stream mat. The soil mat was the physiologically most active community. It showed rates of photosynthesis three times higher than in the other mats, and had the highest rates of ammonium uptake, nitrate uptake and N2 fixation. These observations underscore the taxonomic and physiological diversity of microbial mat communities in the maritime Antarctic region. 相似文献

A simple system based on web-FACE technology was designed and implemented as an approach to label plant-assimilated carbon
(C) with 13C. The labeling system avoids the use of a chamber or other enclosure, instead distributing CO2 heavily enriched in 13C at near atmospheric concentrations to the tree foliage through the use of porous tubing. The system was applied to three
plantation grown juvenile larch (Larix spp.) trees during the daylight hours over the course of five days in the middle of the growing season. Relative to control
trees, fumigation with enriched CO2 resulted in significantly 13C-enriched foliar respiration and nighttime soil respiration. Enrichment was also created in the foliar tissue, but differences
between labeled and control trees were not statistically significant. Temporal and spatial variation in the strength of the
isotopic label did occur, and modifications to the system are suggested to limit the variation. The approach should enable
the implementation of pulse-chase experiments designed to understand plant source-sink relationships or experiments designed
to understand the flux of C from plant roots into the soil food web.
