Ecological memory describes how antecedent conditions drive the dynamics of an ecological system. Palaeoecological records are paramount to understand ecological memory at millennial time-scales, but the concept is widely neglected in the literature, and a formal approach is lacking. Here, we fill such a gap by introducing a quantitative framework for ecological memory in palaeoecology, and assessing how data constraints and taxa traits shape ecological memory patterns. We simulate the population dynamics and pollen abundance of 16 virtual taxa with different life and niche traits as a response to an environmental driver. The data is processed to mimic a realistic sediment deposition and sampled at increasing depth intervals. We quantify ecological memory with Random Forests, and assess how data properties and taxa traits shape ecological memory. We find that life-span and niche features modulate the relative importance of the antecedent values of the driver and the pollen abundance over periods of 240 yr and longer. Additionally, we find that accumulation rate and decreasing pollen-sampling resolution inflate the importance of antecedent pollen abundance. Our results suggest that: 1) ecological memory patterns are sensitive to varying accumulation rates. A better understanding on the numerical basis of this effect may enable the assimilation of ecological memory concepts and methods in palaeoecology; 2) incorporating niche theory and models is essential to better understand the nature of ecological memory patterns at millennial time-scales. 3) Long-lived generalist taxa are highly decoupled from the environmental signal. This finding has implications on how we interpret the abundance-environment relationship of real taxa with similar traits, and how we use such knowledge to forecast their distribution or reconstruct past climate.  相似文献

Pandanus boninensis, endemic to the Ogasawara Islands, Japan, is distributed on both the older Bonin and younger Volcano Islands. In this study, we conducted population genetic analyses of P. boninensis on these islands to examine the population diversity and structure across old and young islands, to assess potential differences in population demography with island age, and to collect any evidence of migration between old and young islands. We found that the genetic diversity of expressed sequence tag (EST)–based microsatellite (SSR) markers, the nucleotide diversity of nuclear DNA sequences, and the haplotype diversity of chloroplast DNA on young islands were lower than those on old islands. Clustering analyses of EST‐SSR indicated that populations on old islands were strongly diverged from those on young islands. Approximate Bayesian computation analysis of EST‐SSR suggested that population expansion occurred on old islands while population reduction occurred on young islands. We also found evidence of migration among old islands (mostly from south to north), while it appears that there have been very few migration events between old and young islands. These differences could be due to the fact that young islands tend to be geographically isolated and support smaller populations that began a shorter time ago from limited founders. The P. boninensis populations on the Volcano Islands are interesting from an evolutionary perspective as they constitute a classic example of the early stages of progressive colonization on oceanic islands with small effective population sizes and low genetic diversity.  相似文献

Chronological age conveys only a rough approximation of the maturational status of a person whereas skeletal maturity indicators give a more accurate estimation. Therefore, it is of interest to document the correlation between chronological and skeletal age using CVMI and modified MP3 methods. A total of 39 subjects between the age ranges of 9-16 years were selected for this study. Pre-treatment lateral cephalograms and hand-wrist radiographs of the subjects were used. The skeletal age was analyzed by the Cervical Vertebrae Maturity Index (CVMI) and modified MP3 methods. The data was analyzed with SPSS software version 23.00. Kendall''s Tau correlation test was performed to estimate the correlation between chronological age and skeletal age among the subjects and a linear regression test was also performed. Positive correlation was found between chronological age and skeletal age assessed by CVMI method (r= 0.398) and modified MP3 method (r=0.382) with p value >0.003. Thus it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between chronological age and skeletal age among all the subjects.  相似文献

在2016年和2017年的5—8月,我们对川西马尔康麝场圈养林麝(Moschus berezovskii)的麝香分泌进行了行为与生理监测,对麝香分泌的各阶段进行了准确判定,记录了泌香启动、泌香盛期开始、泌香盛期终止及泌香结束的时间阶段及持续时间长,分析了林麝麝香分泌的时间阶段与体重和年龄等因素的关系。结果表明,马尔康麝场的雄性林麝平均泌香启动日在6月16日[(167.06±7.75)d,n=141],于6月17日进入泌香盛期[(168.52±7.67)d,n=141],6月21日[(172.17±7.26)d, n=138]泌香活动减弱,至6月25日[(176.27±8.11)d, n=131]泌香结束;雄麝体重与其泌香启动、泌香盛期停止及泌香结束时间呈显著负相关(rPS = -0.234,PPS =0.028;r VSF = -0.215,PVSF = 0.047;r SE = -0.229,PSE = 0.043),即雄麝的体重越大,其泌香越早;各年龄组间的平均泌香时长差异显著(F 17, 113 = 3.482, P = 0.003),其中2岁雄麝平均泌香时长最长[(13.07±2.08)d, n=20],显著高于3岁[(9.38±0.76)d, n=12, P = 0.042]和4岁[(7.80±1.60)d, n=5, P = 0.013]个体;马尔康林麝平均泌香量为(11.85g±0.96)g, (n=114),随泌香时长延长有增加趋势,但不显著(P = 0.854)。基于上述林麝雄体的泌香时间、泌香量与年龄和体重等因素间的关联,可对圈养的林麝个体间的泌香力、泌香量等进行区分和预判,作为圈养林麝驯养生产力优化的依据,并可为圈养林麝优质品系的选育提供参考。  相似文献

The genetic diversity and structure of invasive species are affected by the time since invasion, but it is not well understood how. We compare likely the oldest populations of Aedes aegypti in continental North America with some of the newest to illuminate the range of genetic diversity and structure that can be found within the invasive range of this important disease vector. Aedes aegypti populations in Florida have probably persisted since the 1600‐1700s, while populations in southern California derive from new invasions that occurred in the last 10 years. For this comparison, we genotyped 1,193 individuals from 28 sites at 12 highly variable microsatellites and a subset of these individuals at 23,961 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This is the largest sample analyzed for genetic structure for either region, and it doubles the number of southern California populations previously analyzed. As predicted, the older populations (Florida) showed fewer indicators of recent founder effect and bottlenecks; in particular, these populations have dramatically higher genetic diversity and lower genetic structure. Geographic distance and driving distance were not good predictors of genetic distance in either region, especially southern California. Additionally, southern California had higher levels of genetic differentiation than any comparably sized documented region throughout the worldwide distribution of the species. Although population age and demographic history are likely driving these differences, differences in climate and transportation practices could also play a role.  相似文献

Retention forestry, which retains a portion of the original stand at the time of harvesting to maintain continuity of structural and compositional diversity, has been originally developed to mitigate the impacts of clear‐cutting. Retention of habitat trees and deadwood has since become common practice also in continuous‐cover forests of Central Europe. While the use of retention in these forests is plausible, the evidence base for its application is lacking, trade‐offs have not been quantified, it is not clear what support it receives from forest owners and other stakeholders and how it is best integrated into forest management practices. The Research Training Group ConFoBi (Conservation of Forest Biodiversity in Multiple‐use Landscapes of Central Europe) focusses on the effectiveness of retention forestry, combining ecological studies on forest biodiversity with social and economic studies of biodiversity conservation across multiple spatial scales. The aim of ConFoBi is to assess whether and how structural retention measures are appropriate for the conservation of forest biodiversity in uneven‐aged and selectively harvested continuous‐cover forests of temperate Europe. The study design is based on a pool of 135 plots (1 ha) distributed along gradients of forest connectivity and structure. The main objectives are (a) to investigate the effects of structural elements and landscape context on multiple taxa, including different trophic and functional groups, to evaluate the effectiveness of retention practices for biodiversity conservation; (b) to analyze how forest biodiversity conservation is perceived and practiced, and what costs and benefits it creates; and (c) to identify how biodiversity conservation can be effectively integrated in multi‐functional forest management. ConFoBi will quantify retention levels required across the landscape, as well as the socio‐economic prerequisites for their implementation by forest owners and managers. ConFoBi's research results will provide an evidence base for integrating biodiversity conservation into forest management in temperate forests.  相似文献

人工繁育是当前我国保护野生林麝(Moschus berezovskii)资源的主要手段之一,但在林麝种群复壮的过程中,消化道寄生虫病始终威胁着林麝的健康。为探究林麝消化道寄生虫群落对不同扰动策略的响应,本研究分别使用复合药阿苯达唑伊维菌素粉和单一成分药阿维菌素粉去除林麝体内线虫和绦虫,监测林麝其他寄生虫和群落动态变化。选取60只雄性林麝,随机分为三组,分别为阿苯达唑伊维菌素用药组(20只)、阿维菌素用药组(20只)和未做任何处理的对照组(20只),并连续采集8周用药组和对照组林麝的新鲜粪便。基于改良的Wisconsin粪便虫卵漂浮计数法检测粪便中的虫卵和卵囊,对实验结果进行Kruskal-Wallis检验、Wilcoxon秩检验、Mann Whitney检验和双因素方差分析。研究结果显示,对照组和阿苯达唑伊维菌素用药组林麝的寄生虫感染均为混合感染,球虫为优势物种,其负载量显著高于线虫和绦虫(P < 0.05),阿维菌素用药组林麝仅感染球虫。药物扰动后,两组用药组的林麝球虫的流行率、平均感染强度均高于对照组,但线虫流行率均低于对照组(27.15%,42.15%)。此外,用药后,阿苯达唑伊维菌素用药组林麝先于阿维菌素用药组再次感染线虫和绦虫。通过比较用药组和对照组林麝寄生虫的群落动态变化,表明林麝消化道寄生虫感染现象较为普遍,多重感染中球虫和蠕虫存在竞争关系,复合药物阿苯达唑伊维菌素粉对林麝寄生虫群落的扰动程度更大,林麝寄生虫群落恢复能力与扰动程度成正比。建议林麝人工繁育基地加强科学性和计划性驱虫,并持续性开展林麝寄生虫感染的监测工作。  相似文献

Background and AimsLeaf functional traits are strongly tied to growth strategies and ecological processes across species, but few efforts have linked intraspecific trait variation to performance across ontogenetic and environmental gradients. Plants are believed to shift towards more resource-conservative traits in stressful environments and as they age. However, uncertainty as to how intraspecific trait variation aligns with plant age and performance in the context of environmental variation may limit our ability to use traits to infer ecological processes at larger scales.MethodsWe measured leaf physiological and morphological traits, canopy volume and flowering effort for Artemisia californica (California sagebrush), a dominant shrub species in the coastal sage scrub community, under conditions of 50, 100 and 150 % ambient precipitation for 3 years.Key ResultsPlant age was a stronger driver of variation in traits and performance than water availability. Older plants demonstrated trait values consistent with a more conservative resource-use strategy, and trait values were less sensitive to drought. Several trait correlations were consistent across years and treatments; for example, plants with high photosynthetic rates tended to have high stomatal conductance, leaf nitrogen concentration and light-use efficiency. However, the trade-off between leaf construction and leaf nitrogen evident in older plants was absent for first-year plants. While few traits correlated with plant growth and flowering effort, we observed a positive correlation between leaf mass per area and performance in some groups of older plants.ConclusionsOverall, our results suggest that trait sensitivity to the environment is most visible during earlier stages of development, after which intraspecific trait variation and relationships may stabilize. While plant age plays a major role in intraspecific trait variation and sensitivity (and thus trait-based inferences), the direct influence of environment on growth and fecundity is just as critical to predicting plant performance in a changing environment.  相似文献

To what extent does epiphytic community composition in boreal forests reflect soil nutrient status? To answer this question, we investigated potential links between terrestrial plants and lichen-dominated communities in Picea glauca x engelmannii canopies in south-central British Columbia. We combined original data on vegetational composition in the ground and tree layers with published data on elemental uptake in standardized transplants of the lichen Lobaria pumonaria affixed to the lower branches of studied trees. Procrustean association metrics revealed a significant concordance between community composition among the epiphytic and terrestrial vegetation, which was stronger in Mn-enriched conifer canopy settings, and weaker within the cation-enriched dripzones of adjacent Populus trees. We also found that the NMDS1-gradient for each vegetation layer was strongly correlated with base cations (and inversely with Mn) in canopy throughfall, as well as with soil and bark pH. We conclude that elemental composition in canopy throughfall forms a functional link between terrestrial and epiphytic vegetation.  相似文献

目的探讨早产儿肠道微生态变化及其与胎龄、出生体质量的关系。方法选取2018年5月至2020年5月我院收治的80例早产儿作为早产组,同期收治的80例足月新生儿作为对照组。收集入组新生儿出生后3 d、3周的粪便,比较2组研究对象粪便标本中细菌丰富度和Shannon Wiener指数;根据早产组胎龄和出生体质量不同分组,分析胎龄、出生体质量与肠道微生态变化的关系。结果(1)出生3 d,早产组新生儿粪便标本的DGGE图谱条带数、Shannon Wiener指数均显著低于对照组(t=3.179、3.521,均P<0.05);(2)出生3 d,胎龄34+1~36+6周组新生儿粪便标本的DGGE图谱条带数、Shannon Wiener指数显著高于28~30周组、30+1~32周组和32+1~34周组(q=9.653、6.476、4.848和8.796、8.008、6.277,均P<0.05);(3)出生3 d,体质量>2 000 g组新生儿粪便标本的的DGGE图谱条带数、Shannon Wiener指数显著高于≤1 500 g组(q=5.601和4.593,均P<0.05);(4)不同出生体质量、胎龄的早产儿,出生3周粪便标本的DGGE图谱条带数、Shannon Wiener指数相比差异无统计学意义(F=1.577和2.326,均P>0.05)。结论与足月新生儿相比,早产儿出生后细菌定植出现延迟且多样性差,胎龄越小、出生体质量越低的早产儿的肠道菌群的多样性更低、定植延迟的可能性更大,出生3周后其肠道微生态逐渐恢复正常。  相似文献
