During somatic growth in adult Locusta migratoria L. there are variations in the responsiveness of chemosensilla on the maxillary palps. Relative changes in chemosensitivity to amino acids and sucrose are consistent with relative changes in protein and carbohydrate ingestion. There is a decline throughout the somatic growth phase in the proportion of sensilla responding to stimulation. In those sensilla which respond, there is a decline in the firing rate to amino acids, while sucrose responsiveness declines to a lesser degree. We suggest that variations in the levels of nutrients in the storage tissues, especially the haemolymph, arising from changes in the demand for protein and carbohydrate for growth, directly or indirectly, influence gustatory sensitivity.
Résumé Pendant la croissance de L. migratoria L. les réactions aux acides aminés et aux sucres des sensilles chimiques des palpes maxillaires changent. Ces changements relatifs de la sensibilité chimique à ces deux aliments correspondent aux modifications dans l'ingestion de protéines et d'hydrates de carbone par cet insecte. La diminution de la réponse aux acides aminés est liée à la fois au nombre de sensilles qui réagissent et à leur taux de réaction. La sensibilité des sensilles au sucrose varie moins profondément et implique uniquement des modifications du nombre de sensilles réagissant. Nous suggérons que des variations de la teneur en éléments nutritifs de l'haemolymphe, dues à des modifications de la demande en protéines et en glucides nécessaires à la croissance, influent sur la sensibilité gustative.

Dermatoglyphic data on 17 traits (digital arches, ulnar loops, whorls, patterns on the hypothenar and thenar/I,II,III, and IV interdigital areas, main line C absence and its incompleteness, mean digital ridge-count, a–b, b–c, and c–d ridge–counts, atd angle, pattern intensity index, and main line index) are presented in this paper for 194 males and 224 females from the Taimir Peninsula. Annual net production was estimated in the secondary coppice forest near Tokyo, which was dominated by a deciduous oak,Quercus serrata Thunb. Lateral growth of stems and old branches was directly estimated by examining the annual rings for 35 shoots in a clear-cut quadrat of 10m×10m. Phytomasses of current organs were also weighed in the quadrat. Preharvest losses of current organs were determined by twelve 0.5 m2 litter traps for fine litter and twelve 6 m2 quadrats for woody litter. Branch production was also assessed indirectly by use of the stem-branch allometry and death of branches. The results of the indirect method were in sufficient agreement with the result of the direct one. Grazing loss of leaves from the canopy was estimated directly from the loss in leaf area and indirectly from the animal faeces caught by the litter traps. Net production of the canopy trees was 149 kg a−1 year−1, in which leaf production was 36.9 kg. Animals grazed about 14% of the leaf area by the end of the growing season. True consumption of leaves by animals was 7.6% of leaf production or 10% of leaf mass. Production of undergrowth, mainly a dwarf bamboo,Pleioblastus chino Makino, was 28 kg a−1 year−1, being 15% of the total stand production. Productivity of this forest was significantly higher than that of cool-temperate deciduous broadleaf forests.  相似文献

The postmetamorphic growth and survival of the salamander Hynobius nebulosus tokyoentisTago were surveyed in the study site located in Habu village of Hinodemachi, a suburb of Tokyo City, during 1975–1981. A laboratory experiment on the growth rate of juveniles was conducted in parallel with the field survey. The result indicated that this salamander grew at the rate of 8,mm in s.v.l. per year during the juvenile stage, but its growth rate decreased markedly as low as 1.8 mm for males and 1.1 mm for females, once it had attained sexual maturity. According to the “capture-recapture” procedure the annual survival rate after metamorphosis was found to be quite high; that is, approximately 0.7. By using the growth rate of juveniles and the difference between the sizes at metamorphosis and sexual maturity, the age at first reproduction was estimated to be 4 year for males and 5 year for females. From the data obtained in this study, the intrinsic rates of increase (r) were calculated for various values of age at first reproduction under different survival schedules, and the relationship between the age at first reproduction and fitness as measured by r was examined. The result indicated that an optimal age maximizing fitness always existed under respective survival schedules, and the observed age at first reproduction of this salamandei was found to coincide well with the predicted optimal age.  相似文献

Summary The symbiotic heterocystous cyanobacteriumAnabaena azollae present in the leaf cavities of the water fernAzolla spp. was studied. The cyanobacteria extracted from the leaf cavities showed differences in pigment composition in three species ofAzolla, i.e A.pinnata var.pinnata, A.caroliniana and A.filiculoides, as observed by pigment absorption and epifluorescence tests. These differences suggest that of these species the cyanobiont ofA. pinnata is the most actively nitrogenfixing form. This has been confirmed by nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) tests. Heterocysts of the symbiont ofA. pinnata were characterized by high chlorophylla and low phycocyanin content, a low fluorescence yield of chlorophyll in the heterocysts compared to vegetative cells and a gradient of phycocyanin concentration in the vegetative cells adjacent to heterocysts. This indicates that only photosystem I is present in the heterocyst. In the two otherAzolla species quantitative shifts in the pigment composition occurred suggesting a lower nitrogen fixation activity.In the cyanobiontAnabaena azollae the heterocyst frequency could reach a value of 44–45%. It is argued that there are two generations of heterocysts in a matureAzolla plant, which are concomitant with two peaks of nitrogen fixation activity correlated with leaf age,i.e. leaf number along the main axis of the plant. At both peaks of maximal N2-ase activity, only 20–25% of the heterocysts present are metabolically active as demonstrated by the reduction of Neotetrazolium chloride (NTC) in the heterocysts and darkening of nuclear emulsions by silver salt reduction. Vegetative cells of the cyanobiont reduce Neotetrazolium chloride (NTC) to formazan more rapidly than has been observed in the free-living heterocystous cyanobacteriumAnabaena cylindrica tested in parallel experiments. This feature may be due to a more permeable cell wall of the vegetative cells of the cyanobiont compared to the free-living form, since the vegetative cells of the symbiont play a role in cross-feeding of the host (Azolla).Evidence is obtained that only the heterocysts of the cyanobiont ofAzolla are involved in the nitrogen fixation process as in free-living heterocystous cyanobacterium species. This situation is different from other cyanobacterial symbioses such as inGunnera, Blasia andAnthoceros, where physiological modifications are reported in the symbiosis with another photosynthetic partner such as the absence of O2 evolution and the absence of photo-fixation of CO2 in the cyanobionts.Pigment composition and N2-ase activity in the symbiotic cyanobacteria of three Azolla species have indicated the superiority of theA. pinnata symbiont.A. pinnata var.pinnata is a semidomesticated form used in S.E. Asia for agricultural purposes (irrigated rice culture) to increase soil fertility.It is suggested that by selection (domestication) more efficient strains (clones) can be obtained, and further that with more advanced techniques such as gene mutation and genetic manipulation even more efficient and for agriculture more beneficial clones can be obtained.  相似文献

Light was found to inhibit substantially (i.e. up to 88%) the production of ethylene induced by water stress in excised wheat leaves and from the shoots of intact plants. The relatively small amounts of ethylene emanating fron non-stressed leaves were also inhibited by light but to a smaller degree (i.e. up to 61%). In water-stressed leaves the degree of light inhibition of ethylene production was shown to be related to the age of the leaves; the amounts of ethylene diffusing from young leaves (i.e. 6-days old) was inhibited 52% by light whereas in older leaves (i.e. 9-days old) it was inhibited by 85%. Previous studies [Wright (1979) Planta 144, 179–188 and (1980) Planta 148, 381–388] had shown that application of 6-benzyladenine (BA) to leaves a day before wilting, greatly increases the amount of ethylene diffusing from the leaves following wilting (e.g. 8-fold), and to smaller degrees do applications of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3). On the other hand abscisic acid (ABA) treatment reduces the amount of ethylene produced. In these earlier experiments the ethylene was collected from leaves held under dark or near-dark conditions, so in the present study the activities of these growth regulators (10-4 mol l-1 solutions) under dark and light conditions were compared. It was found that they maintained the same relative activities on ethylene emanation (i.e. BA>IAA>GA3>water controls>ABA) under both light and dark conditions. However, because of the inhibitory effect of light, the absolute amounts of ethylene produced from all treatments were always much higher in the dark than in the light (usually about a 6-fold difference). An interesting effect of light treatment on ethylene biosynthesis was found when water-stressed leaves were kept in dark chambers for 41/2 h and then transferred to light. Quite unexpectedly, instead of the rate of ethylene production falling immediately, it continued to be produced at the dark rate (i.e. no light inhibition!) for over 2 h before the rate began to decline, and for a much longer period (i.e. in excess of 41/2 h) if the leaves had previously been sprayed with BA. Predictably, leaves placed in the light (i.e. in leaf chambers) and then transferred to darkness, immediately or very soon produced ethylene at the dark rate. One explanation of these results, which is discussed, would be that the biosynthesis of an ethylene precursor requires an obligatory dark stage. The influx of Rb+ into the roots of two barley varieties (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Salve and cv. Ingrid) from a K+-free 86Rb-labelled nutrient solution with 2.0 mM Rb+, was checked at intervals from day 6 to day 18. The control plants were continuously grown in complete nutrient solution containing 5.0 mM K+, while two other groups of plants were grown in K+-free nutrient solution starting on day 6 and between day 6 and day 9, respectively. The pattern of Rb+ influx was similar for both varieties, although their efficiencies in absorbing Rb+ were different. The relationship between Rb+ influx and K+ concentration of the root could be interpreted in terms of negative feedback through allosteric control of uptake across the plasmalemma of the root cells. Hill plots were bimodal, but in the opposite direction. The Hill coefficients, reflecting the minimum number of interacting allosteric binding sites for K+ (Rb+), were low (≤–3.0). It is discussed whether the threshold value, that is the breaking point in the Hill plot, is indicative of a changed efficiency of transporting units for K+ (Rb+) transport to the xylem. Moreover, feedback regulation might be involved in transport of K+ between root and shoot. The variation in K+ concentrations in the roots and shoots of control plants were cyclic but in phase opposition despite an exponential growth. Two groups of 16 rats each were fed the same diet with 12.9 ppm Zn. Nine days after each animal was injected with65Zn for assessing fecal zinc of endogenous origin, zinc intake and excretion were determined for a six-day period at the age of about five (group I) and nine (II) weeks. At mean growth rates of 5.1 and 5.2 g/day, food consumption per gram of gain was 2.01 g in group I vs 2.86 g in II. Overall, zinc retention amounted to 21 vs 25 μg Zn/g of gain. Apparent absorption averaged 92 vs 74% of Zn intake (132 vs 189 μg/day), while true absorption averaged 98 vs 92%. It was concluded that endogenous fecal zinc excretion was limited to the indispensable loss (F em) in group I (7 μg/day), while it exceeded this minimum loss in group II (33 μg/day). True retention, which reflected total zinc utilization (true absorption times metabolic efficiency), was derived from apparent absorption plusF em (11 μg/day for group II according to the greater metabolic body size of the rats). It averaged 98% of Zn intake in group I vs 80% in group II. The mean metabolic efficiency was 100% vs 87%. The conclusion was that these marked differences between age groups in utilizing the dietary zinc reflected the efficient homeostatic adjustments in absorption and endogenous excretion of zinc to the respective zinc supply status.  相似文献

Laboratory-reared Lymnaea catascopium snails (1–269 days old) were exposed individually to different numbers of Schistosomatium douthitti miracidia. Increasing the exposure dosage from 3 to 10 miracidia generally increased infection rates, in some age classes up to 100%. Successful re-exposure of snails not infected after a primary exposure was possible. Neonatal snails were least likely to become infected, primarily because miracidia were not attracted to them. Snails 12–55 days old were most susceptible to infection. Miracidia were readily attracted to these snails, and many were ingested and subsequently penetrated the host esophageal wall. Miracidial penetration of external snail surfaces was rare. Susceptibility of older snails (65–269 days) progressively declined with age. Many miracidia were entangled and immobilized in mucus produced by these snails, and fewer were ingested. No conspicuous host cellular responses to mother sporocysts were observed in any of the snails sectioned. A comparison of susceptibility of deliberately stunted snails and comparably aged controls of normal size indicated that the former were more susceptible.  相似文献

Summary. In laboratory colonies of the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus, we observed the sequence of tasks performed by marked individuals. Observations of about 760 ants in three laboratory colonies indicate that ants often move from inside to outside work. However, there was a great deal of variation in the sequence. If trends in sequence were weak because ants do move from inside to outside work but the duration of our observations was too short to see the transition, ants should be observed to stay either inside or outside. There was no significant tendency for ants to persist in inside or outside work, indicating the variability in sequence is real. Ants tended to perform midden work before they died. Foraging activity is low in laboratory colonies, and it may be that ants that would be foragers in the field end up as midden workers in the laboratory. High variability in task sequence, in uniform laboratory conditions, contrasts with the apparently more consistent sequence from inside to outside work in the field.
