Serris-Les Ruelles is an early medieval demesne (manor house) showing the bipartite structure which is typical of this kind of landed property. The organisation is based on social difference: on the one hand the lord in his manor house, on the other the peasant in their village. The difference is apparent from the inorganic remains. Two out of four possible criteria were applied to investigate whether the difference is also apparent in plant food. The result of the investigation was negative. The reason might be that the spatial and economic separation between lord and peasant was not yet wide enough where food was concerned.  相似文献

A propitiously timed household survey carried out in Mozambique over the period 2008/2009 permits us to study the relationship between shifts in food prices and child nutrition status in a low income setting. We focus on weight-for-height and weight-for-age in different survey quarters characterized by very different food price inflation rates. Using propensity score matching techniques, we find that these nutrition measures, which are sensitive in the short run, improve significantly in the fourth quarter of the survey, when the inflation rate for basic food products is low, compared to the first semester or three quarters, when food price inflation was generally high. The prevalence of underweight, in particular, falls by about 40 percent. We conclude that the best available evidence points to food penury, driven by the food and fuel price crisis combined with a short agricultural production year, as substantially increasing malnutrition amongst under-five children in Mozambique.  相似文献

1. The swallowtail butterfly Battus polydamas archidamas Boisduval, 1936, exhibits polyphenism for pupal coloration (green and brown). It is distributed across arid regions with winter rains and is monophagous on Aristolochia plants, which emerge after the winter rains and dry out the during summer. Thus, day length does not covary positively with host plant productivity. It was hypothesised that pupal colour was driven by food availability, not photoperiod. The benefits of pupal coloration matching the colour of pupation sites in terms of field survival were also investigated to evaluate the adaptive value of pupa colour. 2. Larvae were reared under a factorial array of two photoperiods (LD 10:14 h and LD 14:10 h) and two food availability regimes (leaves ad libitum and available every other day) to assess the frequency of green and brown pupae. Field survival of green and brown pupae was quantified in three commonly used habitats that differ in background coloration (cacti, rocks and shrubs). 3. Food availability determined pupal colour. Larvae in the ad libitum regime resulted mostly in green pupae, while those with restricted food were mostly brown. In contrast, photoperiod did not influence pupal colour. Survival probability of pupae placed on cacti was higher than those placed on rocks and shrubs, and the lowest predation risk across habitats was for green pupae on cacti. 4. Food availability plays a major role in the seasonal polyphenism for pupal colour of specialist butterflies inhabiting arid environments with winter rains.  相似文献

In Panorpa vulgaris scorpionflies, females choose males on the basis of their saliva secretion ability depending on salivary gland weight. Condition dependent salivary gland weight indicates male quality in terms of food acquisition ability (FAA). In the present study we compare standardised estimates of additive genetic variance (V a) in conditional status and salivary gland weight under conditions including and excluding food competition. Estimates of V a were high when individuals compete for food and significantly lower when food competition was excluded, indicating that a large proportion of V a in conditional status as well as salivary gland weight attributes to V a in FAA. As FAA is likely to be determined by various underlying traits, maintenance of V a in FAA, and therewith in salivary gland weight, is easily conceivable. Furthermore, we found a strong genetic correlation between condition and salivary gland weight under conditions including food competition that decreased when food competition was excluded and thereby diminished the strength of sexual selection on condition influencing traits. In sum, our results demonstrate that estimates of V a in sexual signals (especially if estimated using standardised breeding conditions) will be strongly influenced by the presence/absence of environmental factors related to male performance in natural selection context.  相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides have captured the attention of researchers in recent years because of their efficiency in fighting against pathogens. These peptides are found in nature and have been isolated from a wide range of organisms. Furthermore, analogs or synthetic derivatives have successfully been developed on the basis of natural peptide patterns. Long use of pesticides and antibiotics has led to development of resistance among pathogens and other pests as well as increase of environmental and health risks. Antimicrobial peptides are under consideration as new substitutes for conventional pesticides and antibiotics. Many plants and animals have been manipulated with antimicrobial peptide-encoding genes and several pesticides and drugs have been produced based on these peptides. Such strategies and products may still have a long way to go before being confirmed by regulatory bodies and others need to surmount technical problems before being accepted as applicable ones. In spite of these facts, several cases of successful use of antimicrobial peptides in agriculture and food industry indicate a promising future for extensive application of these peptides. In this review, we consider the developing field of antimicrobial peptide applications in various agricultural activities.  相似文献

The reproductive response involving egg number and size was studied for the egg carrying copepod Euterpina acutifrons in two estuaries with different nutritional environment (Bilbao and Mundaka). To characterise the available food for copepods, the concentration of particulate organic matter (POM), the combined concentration (PGL) and proportion of particulate protein, carbohydrate and lipids and the concentration of chlorophyll a were measured in the <20 μm seston fraction. Data on female size (prosome length) and abiotic factors, such as temperature, salinity and oxygen saturation in water, were also obtained to relate them to reproductive and nutritional variables. Correlation and stepwise regression analyses indicated that temperature via female size was the main factor controlling brood volume in a temporal context, whilst the nutritional environment had a secondary role. Nevertheless, the nutritional environment caused noticeable between-estuary differences in the reproductive response of this species. ANOVA tests showed that E. acutifrons clutch size and brood volume were significantly bigger in the estuary of Bilbao, which was richer in both total (POM) and labile (PGL) organic particulate matter than the estuary of Mundaka. In contrast, egg size, female size and phytoplanktonic food quantity did not differ significantly between estuaries. These results suggest that the organic enrichment with particles of detritical-heterotrophic origin enhanced E. acutifrons clutch size and brood volume in Bilbao. Egg size was closely related to phytoplankton in both estuaries, but a clear trade-off between egg size and number per clutch was observed only in Mundaka. Thus, we suggest that the reduction of egg number in order to increase egg size might happen only under food-limiting conditions, but not in organically rich and quite constant nutritional environments such as found those in Bilbao.  相似文献

Food production is increasingly being challenged by limited resources of energy and land as well as by growing demand for food. In a future with less availability of fossil fuels, land area will become very important for capturing the flow-limited renewable resources. Emergy assessment has been applied to calculate scale dependent indicators, which account for the land area needed, if agricultural systems were to be supported solely on renewable sources. These indicators are designated emergy footprints (EmFs) and expand the concept of support area defined previously in emergy accounting. The EmF (in ha) is calculated based on renewable empower densities which convert resource use into area equivalents able to capture renewable flows. The spatial division between on-site, local and non-local land areas applied in this study, identifies where the support area is located in order to apply a site-specific renewable empower density. A new indicator applying the EmF is the emergy overshoot factor, which estimates the ratio between EmF and the geographical system boundary (in ha). We apply this approach on three innovative food supply systems in Europe located at farms characterised by combining high diversity, reduced use of resources, nutrient cycling and local sales. The question is whether this type of food system may be considered sustainable from a resource use point of view measured as resource use efficiency by means of unit emergy value (UEV), renewability (Ron-site and Rglobal), direct and indirect occupation of land on different spatial scales (EmF and Emergy overshoot factor) and productivity per ha of the directly observed areas and the EmF area, respectively. Labour inputs constituted between 13 and 80% of the total emergy flow. The proportion of resource use from renewable sources was between 31 and 60% when excluding the inputs of direct labour. The food system with the lowest UEV, excluding direct labour, had the highest emergy overshoot factor, which even exceeded the global average of seven. However, this system had the highest productivity. The system with the highest UEV, excluding direct labour, had the lowest overshoot factor. In conclusion, each food system strategy has its pros and cons and it depends on the priorities, which is judged the most sustainable from an emergy point of view.  相似文献

The water footprint (WF) concept links physical and virtual forms of water, which can be used for research on the impact on water resources imposed by human consumption or production activities. Debates remain on the calculation methods due to WF being applied for different research purposes, and the large amounts of data required for the calculation being hard to obtain. This paper calculated and compared two WFs called volumetric WF (the volumes of blue and green water are combined with the same weight) and stress-weighted WF (the volumes of blue and green water are combined with different weights) based on water use data to research crop water productivity of grain crops and its impact on water resources in each region of China. Results for volumetric WF and stress-weighted WF of grain products of each region in China differed greatly. In 2010, the average volumetric WF was 1.25 m3/kg with the blue component 0.53 m3/kg, and the average stress-weighted WF was 0.51 m3/kg. In addition, there were significant differences of both kinds of WFs among regions in China. The results showed that volumetric WF could be used as a comprehensive indicator for evaluating crop water productivity, specified in space and time by source (green and blue WFs). Stress-weighted WF could offer a meaningful way of making quantitative comparisons between products, production systems and services in terms of their potential to contribute to water scarcity. The spatial distribution of these two WFs can help decision making to develop water-saving measures, relieve water stress and restore ecosystems for each region in China.  相似文献

Parasitism is a widespread interaction that plays significant roles in ecosystem balance and evolution. Historically the biology of zoosporic parasites is often a neglected field when studying aquatic ecological dynamics, especially in marine ecosystems. In the marine environment, dinoflagellates represent a significantly large component of primary production, and may be infected by a variety of fungal and fungus-like parasites including chytrids, syndiniales, and perkinsids as well as other microorganisms. The relationship between these organisms and their dinoflagellate hosts constitutes a highly significant pathosystem given the increasing importance of aquaculture. Because of their small size and lack of morphological characteristics these organisms are difficult to identify. This review compares the taxonomy, life cycle, host range, infection strategies, and ecological roles of species of Parvilucifera, Amoebophrya and Dinomyces which are parasites of dinoflagellates. Most of these species have only been described recently. Implications for environmental management are discussed.  相似文献
