Ant-mimicry has evolved in numerous families of spiders. Although some mimics resemble ants very precisely in their morphology and behaviour, others have only a superficial resemblance to ants. In the present study, each of at least seven (and probably ten) out of 11 species of Myrmarachne from peninsular Malaysia associates with one particular species or genus of ant that it specifically resembles; these are therefore 'good' or 'specific' mimics. Myrmarachne malayana lives in the foraging ranges of a variety of ants and shows no specific resemblance to any one genus of ant, and it is best considered as a 'poor' or 'general' mimic. A species of Castianeira (Corinnidae) with a much less precise similarity to ants (a 'poor' mimic) was associated with Polyrhachis ants. It had previously been suggested that Orsima ichneumon (Salticidae) is an ant or insect mimic in reverse; in the present study, it was associated with Polyrhachis ants but is not considered to be an ant-mimic. Two recent theoretical models show how a poor ant-mimic may be better protected than a good mimic under certain circumstances. These data provide some support for the multimodel hypothesis, although not for Sherratt's hypothesis. The cell viability of human cancer cell lines treated with [5,10-bis(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)-15,20-diphenyl]porphinatoiron(III) (cis-FeMPy(2)P(2)P) has been estimated. The cis-FeMPy(2)P(2)P is a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic in vitro that exhibited a significant toxicity in cancer cell lines. This toxicity is rather due to pro-oxidant properties of the iron-porphyrin in vivo. We have demonstrated that there was the relationship between the LD(50) values calculated from the viability of cancer cell lines treated with cis-FeMPy(2)P(2)P and the SOD activities of the cell lines. Furthermore, the inhibition of SOD by antisense S-oligonucleotide increased the cytotoxic effect of cis-FeMPy(2)P(2)P against cancer cells. These results suggest that SOD is a target enzyme for the cell death induced by cis-FeMPy(2)P(2)P as a new class of anticancer agents.  相似文献

Understanding the mating system and reproductive strategies of an endangered species is critical to the success of captive breeding. The big‐headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) is one of the most threatened turtle species in the world. Captive breeding and reintroduction are necessary to re‐establish wild populations of P. megacephalum in some of its historical ranges in China, where the original populations have been extirpated. However, the captive breeding of P. megacephalum is very difficult and this may be due to its mysterious reproductive strategies and special behavior (e.g., aggressive temperament and territoriality). In this study, we achieved successful captive breeding of P. megacephalum by creating a habitat that mimics natural conditions and then investigated its mating system using microsatellite makers. A total of 16 clutches containing 79 eggs of P. megacephalum were collected, and 52 were hatched successfully over two breeding seasons. Of the 15 effective clutches, 6 clutches (40%) exhibited multiple paternity. There was no significant correlation between clutch size and multiple paternity, and no significant difference in hatching success between multiple‐sired and single‐sired clutches. However, there was significant correlation between male body size and the number of offspring, with higher‐ranked males contributing to more clutches. Our results provide the first evidence of multiple paternity and male hierarchy in P. megacephalum. These findings suggest that multiple paternity and male hierarchy should be considered in captive breeding programs for P. megacephalum, and creating a habitat that mimics natural conditions is an effctive way to achieve successful captive breeding and investigate the mating systems of this species.  相似文献

Batesian mimicry is a well‐studied adaptation for predation avoidance, in which a mimetic species resembles an unpalatable model species. Batesian mimicry can be under positive selection because of the protection gained against predators, due to resemblance to unpalatable model species. However, in some mimetic species, nonmimetic individuals are present in populations, despite the benefits of mimicry. The mechanism for evolution of such mimetic polymorphism remains an open question. Here, we address the hypothesis that the abundance of mimics is limited by that of the models, leading to mimetic polymorphism. In addition, other forces such as the effects of common ancestry and/or isolation by distance may explain this phenomenon. To investigate this question, we focused on the butterfly, Papilio polytes, that exhibits mimetic polymorphism on multiple islands of the Ryukyus, Japan, and performed field surveys and genetic analysis. We found that the mimic ratio of P. polytes was strongly correlated with the model abundance observed on each of the five islands, suggesting negative frequency‐dependent selection is driving the evolution of polymorphism in P. polytes populations. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicated that the southern island populations are the major source of genetic diversity, and the middle and northern island populations arose by relatively recent migration. This view was also supported by mismatch distribution and Tajima's D analyses, suggesting a recent population expansion on the middle and northern islands, and stable population persistence on the southern islands. The frequency of the mimetic forms within P. polytes populations is thus explained by variations in the model abundance rather than by population structure. Thus, we propose that predation pressure, rather than neutral forces, have shaped the Batesian mimicry polymorphism in P. polytes observed in the Ryukyus.  相似文献

The so-called 'mimic octopuses' of tropical Indonesia are reputed to mimic up to 13 species of other local marine organisms. We tested for mimicry by allowing individuals of two species of octopus to habituate to divers, then observing and filming two species continuously as they foraged daily in the same open, featureless volcanic sand habitat. Mimicry of a local, abundant flounder occurred commonly during 5 days of natural foraging: nearly 500 episodes were analysed. Both octopus species mimicked the shape, swimming actions, speed, duration, and sometimes the coloration of swimming flounders. During flounder mimicry, octopuses were actively moving and conspicuous, whereas immediately before and after flounder mimicry, they were camouflaged and motionless (sitting or very slowly crawling). Furthermore, when motionless, octopuses assumed body patterns and postures that resembled small sponges, tube-worm tubes, or colonial tunicates, which were among the few objects in the open sand habitat. The key finding was that octopuses used flounder mimicry only when their movement would give away camouflage in this open habitat. In all cases, octopuses used mimicry as a primary defense. Several interactions with fishes and stomatopods were filmed and typical secondary defense behaviours, not mimicry, were used by the octopuses. Foraging occurred twice per day and two tactile feeding tactics were used. Dens and food were not limiting; thus, we observed a highly unusual circumstance of a guild of small, long-armed octopus species that shared the same habitat, den sources, food, activity period, and some behaviours.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 23–38.  相似文献

Several C-1 homologated GlcNAc- and GalNAc-thiazolines, as well as a related GalNAc-thiazole, have been prepared. The compounds are analogues of GlcNAc-thiazoline, a potent transition-state-mimicking inhibitor of retaining β-N-acetylglycosaminidases. Kinetic evaluation of these fused pyranose-heterocycles against the bacterial N-acetylhexosaminidase SpHex suggests active site steric restrictions around the substrate anomeric carbon.  相似文献

Anti-Sm (Sm: U1-U6 RNA-protein complex) antibodies are usually considered highly specific for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), while anti-U1RNP (U1RNP: U1RNA-protein complex) are thought of as diagnostic criteria for the mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). However, both antibody specificities coexist in SLE and MCTD, in varying percentages. Although the anti-Sm/anti-U1RNP immunological cross-reactivity has been initially attributed to a common motif, PPXY(Z)PP (where X, Y, Z are various amino acids), found in the Sm, U1-A and U1-C autoantigens, it appears that the conformational features of the Sm epitopes also play an important role in the immunoreactivity. The PPGMRPP and PPGIRGP main epitopes of the Sm antigen were coupled in duplicate to the tetrameric Ac-(Lys-Aib-Gly)4-OH, SOC4, carrier to form the [(PPGMRPP)2, (PPGIRGP)2]-SOC4 construct as a mimic of the native Sm. It was found that: (i) the 3(10) helical structure of SOC4 allows the epitopes to adopt an exposed orientation, similar to their free forms, that facilitates their recognition from the anti-Sm antibodies, and (ii) the U1-RNP cross-reactivity is minimized.  相似文献

Stable, free radical nitroxides are commonly used ESR spectroscopy tools. However, it has recently been found that ESR observable signal from 5-membered ring spin-adducts or stable label nitroxides is lost or diminished by reaction with superoxide. A similar radical-radical annihilation was not found for six membered ring nitroxide radicals. To discern why six-membered ring nitroxides are not reduced under superoxide flux generated by hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase, spectrophoprmetric (Cyt C) and chemilu-minescence (lucigenin) and ESR assays were used to follow the reactions. Spectrophotometry and chemi-luminescence clearly demonstrated that the six-membered piperidine-I-oxyl compounds (TEMPO, TEMPOL, and TEMPAMIN) rapidly react with superoxide: rate constants at pH 7.8 ranging from 7 × 104 to 1.2 × 10-5M-1s-l. The absence of detectable ESR signal loss results from facile re-oxidation of the corresponding hydroxylamine by superoxide. To fully corroborate the efficiency of the 6-membered nitroxide superoxide dismutase activity, they were shown to protect fully mammalian cells from oxidative damage resulting from exposure to the superoxide and hydrogen peroxide generating system hypoxanthine/ xanthine oxidase. Since six-membered cyclic nitroxides react with superoxide about 2 orders of magnitude faster than the corresponding 5-membered ring nitroxides. they may ultimately be more useful as superoxide oxide dismutase mimetic agents.  相似文献
