Within-population spatial variation in pollinator visitation rates, pollen limitation on seed set, and flower longevity in an alpine species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pollen limitation through insufficient pollen deposition on stigmas caused by too infrequent pollinator visitation may influence the reproductive outcome of plants. In this study we investigated how pollinator visitation rate, the degree of pollen limitation, and flower longevity varied spatially among three sites at different altitudes within a population of the dwarf shrub Dryas octopetala L. in alpine southern Norway. Significant pollen limitation on seed set only occurred at the mid-elevation site, while seed set at the other sites appeared to be mainly resource limited, thus indicating a spatial variation in pollen limitation. There was no association between the spatial variation in the extent of pollen limitation and pollinator visitation rate to flowers. However, pollinator visitation rates were related to flower longevity of Dryas; sites with low visitation rates had long-lived flowers and vice versa. Thus, our results suggest within-population spatial co-variation between pollinator visitation rates, pollen limitation, and a developmental response to these factors, flower longevity. 相似文献

The influence of process variables in batch adsorption has been used to assess the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution using pure and carbonized biomasses of water hyacinth and water spinach. Dried leaves of the water weeds were carbonized at temperature up to 750°C. The optimum removal of dye was achieved at pH 10, 30°C, and 55 min at a dye concentration of 10 mg/L. In an attempt to describe the adsorption process, the equilibrium isotherm for each adsorbent was determined using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Maximum adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir model for pure and carbonized water hyacinth were (mg/g) 7.05 and 2.07, respectively, whereas those of pure and carbonized water spinach were 1.25 and 5.32, respectively. It was observed that the equilibrium data were well fit by both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms as R 2 > .97. This study demonstrates that the two waterweeds are effective, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive biomaterials for the removal of color from industrial effluents. 相似文献

Orange- to red-colored flowers are difficult to produce by conventional breeding techniques in some floricultural plants.
This is due to the deficiency in the formation of pelargonidin, which confers orange to red colors, in their flowers. Previous
researchers have reported that brick-red colored flowers can be produced by introducing a foreign dihydroflavonol 4-reductase
(DFR) with different substrate specificity in Petunia hybrida, which does not accumulate pelargonidin pigments naturally. However, because these experiments used dihydrokaempferol (DHK)-accumulated
mutants as transformation hosts, this strategy cannot be applied directly to other floricultural plants. Thus in this study,
we attempted to produce red-flowered plants by suppressing two endogenous genes and expressing one foreign gene using tobacco
as a model plant. We used a chimeric RNAi construct for suppression of two genes (flavonol synthase [FLS] and flavonoid 3′-hydroxylase [F3′H]) and expression of the gerbera DFR gene in order to accumulate pelargonidin pigments in tobacco flowers. We successfully produced red-flowered tobacco plants
containing high amounts of additional pelargonidin as confirmed by HPLC analysis. The flavonol content was reduced in the
transgenic plants as expected, although complete inhibition was not achieved. Expression analysis also showed that reduction
of the two-targeted genes and expression of the foreign gene occurred simultaneously. These results demonstrate that flower
color modification can be achieved by multiple gene regulation without use of mutants if the vector constructs are designed
resourcefully.

Total concentrations of algal pigments, organic C, C, N, P and S were determined in surface sediments from the littoral zone
of 21 lakes in ice-free areas of northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) with different climatic and environmental conditions.
Concentrations of major ions and nutrients were also determined in water samples from the same lakes. The latter samples had
extremely variable chemical compositions; however, all the lakes resulted oligotrophic. Pigment concentrations in surface
sediments were comparable to those reported for other Antarctic lakes and lower than those in oligotrophic lakes at lower
latitudes. Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta were the main taxa identified. These taxa correspond to those reported
in previous microscopy-based studies on Antarctic phytoplankton and phytobenthos. Discriminant Function Analysis and Canonical
Correspondence Analysis of data indicate that the distribution of pigments in these Victoria Land lakes depends mainly on
their geographical location (particularly the distance from the sea) and nutrient status. 相似文献

Sexual diversity expressed by Curcurbitaceae species is a primary example of developmental plasticity in plants. Ethylene,
which promotes femaleness (carpel development), plays a key role in sex determination. We sought to determine the critical
location for ethylene perception in developing floral primodia. The dominant negative Arabidopsis ethylene response mutant
gene, etr1-1, was introduced into melon (Cucumis melo L.) plants under control of the constitutive cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter, or floral-targeted Apetela3 (AP3) and Crab’s Claw (CRC) promoters, which in Arabidopsis, promote expression in petal and stamen, and carpel and nectary primordia, respectively.
Based on effects of exogenous ethylene, it was predicted that inhibition of ethylene perception by carpel primordia would
inhibit carpel development. Constitutive expression of etr1-1 caused several phenotypes associated with ethylene insensitivity, verifying that etr1-1 inhibits ethylene perception in the heterologous melon system. Carpel-bearing bud production was essentially abolished in
35S::etr1-1 melons, providing direct demonstration of the requirement for ethylene perception for carpel development. CRC::etr1-1 plants, however, showed enhanced femaleness as manifested by earlier and increased number of carpel-bearing buds, and production
of female (rather than bisexual) buds. Despite increased carpel-bearing bud formation, a greater proportion of the CRC::etr1-1 carpel-bearing buds aborted before anthesis. AP3::etr1-1 plants showed increased maleness by nearly exclusive staminate flower production, and poorly developed carpels in the rare
bisexual flowers. These results indicate that ethylene perception by the stamen (or petal) primordia plays a critical role
in promoting carpel development at the time of sex determination, while ethylene perception by the carpel is important for

Three-year-old beech (Fagus sylvatica) seedlings growing in containers were placed into the sun and shade crown of a mature beech stand exposed to ambient (1 x O(3)) and double ambient (2 x O(3)) ozone concentrations at a free-air exposure system ("Kranzberg Forst", Germany). Pigments, alpha-tocopherol, glutathione, ascorbate, and gas exchange were measured in leaves during 2003 (a drought year) and 2004 (an average year). Sun-exposed seedlings showed higher contents of antioxidants, xanthophylls, and beta-carotene and lower contents of chlorophyll, alpha-carotene, and neoxanthin than shade-exposed seedlings. In 2003 sun-exposed seedlings showed higher contents of carotenoids and total glutathione and lower net photosynthesis rates (A(max)) compared to 2004. O(3) exposure generally affected the content of chlorophyll, the xanthophyll cycle, and the intercellular CO(2) concentration (c(i)). Seedlings differed from the adjacent adult trees in most biochemical and physiological parameters investigated: Sun exposed seedlings showed higher contents of alpha-tocopherol and xanthophylls and lower contents of ascorbate, chlorophyll, neoxanthin, and alpha-carotene compared to adult trees. Shade exposed seedlings had lower contents of xanthophylls, alpha-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol than shade leaves of old-growth trees. In 2003, seedlings had higher A(max), stomatal conductance (g(s)), and c(i) under 2 x O(3) than adult trees. The results showed that shade acclimated beech seedlings are more sensitive to O(3), possibly due to a lower antioxidative capacity per O(3) uptake. In this study the influence of chronic free-air ozone exposure and of different meteorological conditions in the very dry year 2003 and the more humid year 2004 on the antioxidative system in sun and shade leaves of adult FAGUS SYLVATICA trees were investigated. Contents of ascorbate, glutathione, and alpha-tocopherol, as well as chloroplast pigments were determined under ambient (1 x O(3)) and double ambient (2 x O(3)) ozone concentrations. Ozone affected the antioxidative system in June and July, causing lower ascorbate contents in the apoplastic space, a more oxidized redox state of ascorbate and glutathione and an increase in pigment contents predominantly in the shade crown. For all measured parameters significant differences between the years were observed. In 2004 the redox state of ascorbate and glutathione was in a more reduced state and leaf contents of alpha-tocopherol, pigments of the xanthophyll cycle, beta-carotene, lutein, neoxanthin, and alpha-carotene were lower compared to 2003. Contents of total glutathione and chlorophyll a + b were increased in the second year. These results indicate a strong influence of the drought conditions in 2003 on the antioxidative system of beech overruling the ozone effects. Shade leaves showed lower contents of ascorbate in both years and the redox states of ascorbate and glutathione were more oxidized compared to sun leaves. Contents of photoprotective and accessory pigments generally were enhanced and the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle was lower in the shade compared to the sun crown. 以胡杨和俄罗斯杨(黑杨杂交种)为材料,通过设置增强UV-B辐射、NaCl胁迫(100mmol/L NaCl)、复合胁迫(增强UV-B辐射+100mmol/L NaCl)及对照(不额外施加NaCl和UV-B)4组处理,研究2种杨树对UV-B辐射、NaCl胁迫及其复合胁迫的生理响应及其种间差异。结果显示:(1)增强UV-B辐射、NaCl胁迫及其复合胁迫下,2种杨树的叶绿素含量降低,叶绿素a/b比值减小,类胡萝卜素含量升高;叶片中的膜脂过氧化产物(MDA)和H2O2含量均显著升高;但在复合胁迫下,俄罗斯杨MDA含量要明显低于各单一胁迫处理,而胡杨MDA含量和2种杨树H2O2含量均介于2种单一胁迫处理之间。(2)在3种不同胁迫条件下,俄罗斯杨和胡杨叶片中过氧化物酶(POD)和过氧化氢酶(CAT)活性比对照显著升高,且POD活性在复合胁迫下最高。(3)2种杨树叶片中渗透调节物质(脯氨酸、甜菜碱、可溶性蛋白)含量在各胁迫条件下均比对照明显升高,且脯氨酸和可溶性蛋白含量在复合胁迫下最高;胡杨甜菜碱含量在3种胁迫条件下的升高幅度均远大于俄罗斯杨,而俄罗斯杨可溶性蛋白含量升高的幅度在增强UV-B辐射和复合胁迫下却明显高于胡杨。研究表明,增强UV-B辐射、NaCl胁迫及其复合处理对2种杨树生长均造成不同程度的胁迫伤害,但2种杨树在复合胁迫下表现出的抗氧化保护能力比在2种单一胁迫下更强,因而复合胁迫对2种杨树的伤害更小,UV-B辐射可能与NaCl胁迫相互拮抗最终减缓了对植物的伤害。 相似文献
