The biology of carbonate precipitation by cyanobacteria   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Summary In the freshwater areas of the Everglades, Florida, U.S.A., carbonate is precipitated in dense cyanobacterial mats. Precipitation is linked with photosynthesis in the mats in a quantitative relationship. On ground of field observations and experiments a model for precipitation in the filamentous cyanobacteriaScytonema is proposed, which links precipitation to bicarbonate use in photosynthesis and subsequent release of OH ions. Besides supersaturation of the water with respect to carbonate and photosynthetic bicarbonate use, precipitation requires a suitable sheath structure and composition. The characteristics of the sheath seem to be responsible for a distinct crystal morphology in the two generaScytonema andSchizothrix, as well as for the restriction of calcification to the outer sheath inScytonema. In the immediate vicinity of the trichom precipitation seems to be inhibited. Comparison of this form of calcifying cyanobacteria with calcification in calcareous algae shows many similarities and rises the question of the biological significance of calcification or precipitation. The precipitated carbonate shows equilibrium precipitation in its δ oxygen values, while it is enriched in13C relative to the ambient water. This agrees with a model of precipitation in which the carbonate derives from the water immediately surrounding the filament. There the water is depleted in12C which is preferably taken up for photosynthesis. No respiratory carbon is involved in precipitation. From measurements of the amount of precipitation in the field and in experiments the annual sedimentation rate is estimated to be 0.024 to 0.24 mm. These values fall within the range of laminae thicknesses in fossil algal laminites.  相似文献

Although large-bodied cladocerans such asDaphnia can reduce algal biomass significantly in temperate lakes if freed from fish predation, the applicability of such biomanipulation techniques for eutrophication management in the subtropics and tropics has been examined only recently. Subtropical cladoceran assemblages differ from those of temperate lakes by their low species richness, early summer gameogenesis, and greatly reduced body size. Eutrophic Florida lakes are dominated by pump-filter feeding fish rather than by size selective planktivores as a temperate lakes. Cladocerans in Florida lakes can increase in abundance significantly if freed from fish but fail to have an impact on algal biomass or composition. The greatest potential for using biomanipulation to manage phytoplankton-dominated lakes in the subtropics and tropics lies with phytophagous fish. Future research should concentrate on defining the role of individual fish taxa on phytoplankton composition and community structure, nutrient cycling, and planktonic productivity before embarking on whole lake manipulation projects.  相似文献

The experimental determination of difference profiles for the study of large zone transport processes by scanning molecular sieve chromatography is described. Using the difference profile method, the progesterone-induced purple glycoprotein of the porcine uterus was found to exist as monomeric units in high ionic environment, with a partition coefficient of 0.269, partition cross-section of 0.488, partition radius of 25 A and a molecular weight of 33500 g mole . The technique was further applied in examining the association-dissociation properties of oxyhemoglobin. In a high tonic environment, the partition coefficient was found to be 0.365 for dimer and the partition cross-section, 0.419; for the tetramer in low ionic strength solution, the partition coefficient was 0.275 and the partition cross-section 0.377, with a dissociation constant of 1.03 x 10(-6) mole/1. This new technique should prove applicable in (1) readily locating the centroid positions of transport boundary profiles at the lowest practicable protein concentration limits, (2) demonstrating the characteristic boundary shape and concentration-dependent centroid position for an interacting solute, (3) determining the axial dispersion coefficient characteristic of solute turbulence within the gel matrix, and (4) distinguishing the boundary between low and high ionic strength solvent phases in the gel column.  相似文献

Resistance to primary and secondary infections with H. contortus was compared in St. Croix, 3/4 St. Croix, Florida Native, Barbados Blackbelly and domestic crossbred lambs. On the basis of worm counts, fecal egg counts and packed cell volumes, St. Croix and 3/4 St. Croix lambs were the most resistant to secondary infections, Florida Native and Barbados lambs were intermediate in resistance, and the domestic lambs were the least resistant. Breed differences were highly variable during primary infection. Breed differences were most pronounced prior to puberty, with domestic lambs highly susceptible to secondary infections. After puberty, domestic lambs were better able to resist secondary infections. Age apparently had little or no effect on the parasite resistance of exotic breeds. Sex differences were significant only after puberty when ewe lambs were more resistant to secondary infection than ram lambs. In one of three experiments lambs of hemoglobin genotype AB were more resistant to secondary infection than lambs of genotype BB in terms of fecal egg counts, packed cell volumes and the proportion of ‘responder’ and ‘nonresponder’ lambs but not in terms of worm counts, although subtle differences may not have been detected because of small numbers of lambs.  相似文献

Effects of spermine, bovine serum albumin, and Z protein on microsomal lipid formation from sn-glycerol 3-phosphate and [14C]palmitoyl CoA were investigated. In the presence of these agents, microsomal lipid formation was stimulated. This was attributed to the activation of sn-glycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase and to the inhibition of palmitoyl CoA hydrolase. In addition to palmitoyl CoA, spermine also reacted with microsomal membranes in causing their aggregation, and ATP reversed the effect of spermine. Further studies indicated that the interaction of spermine with palmitoyl CoA, rather than with microsomal membranes, was responsible for the activation of glycerolipid formation or to the inhibition of palmitoyl CoA reductase. Examination of the intravesicular distribution of sn-glycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase and palmitoyl CoA hydrolase and the effects of structural integrity of microsomal vesicles on these two membrane-bound enzymes indicated that the activation of glycerolipid formation and the inhibition of palmitoyl CoA hydrolase by spermine, bovine serum albumin, or Z protein may be closely linked with the structural integrity of microsomal vesicles.  相似文献

San Luis de Apalachee, one of a chain of Roman Catholic missions established in Spanish Florida (modern states of Georgia and Florida) in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was the principal center of missionization of native populations in the Florida panhandle. Paleoethnobotanical remains yield evidence of production of various kinds of crops at the site, typical of nearly all mission period sites in the area. Stable isotope (carbon and nitrogen) analysis and dental caries evidence suggest that maize was not as important in the diet at San Luis as in other contemporary settings in the region. Ethnohistorical research indicates a heavier reliance on meat consumption compared to other mission settings. This study examines dental microwear of occlusal surfaces of maxillary molars from San Luis and five other Native American mission period sites in Spanish Florida. Epoxy casts of molar crushing facets were photographed under 500x magnification, using a scanning electron microscope. Photomicrographs were digitized using Microware 4.02 (Ungar [2002a]) and statistically evaluated using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's multiple comparisons tests. These analyses reveal that the frequency of pitting on the San Luis molars is significantly greater than for other mission period sites. Consistent with bioarchaeological, historical, and archaeological documentation, these findings suggest that diets were different in the San Luis natives in comparison with the other native populations in Spanish Florida. Various dietary factors likely came into play, resulting in these differences, and may have included significantly greater meat consumption at San Luis.  相似文献

The NASA Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar (EAARL), a temporal waveform-resolving, airborne, green wavelength LIDAR (light detection and ranging), is designed to measure the submeter-scale topography of shallow reef substrates. Topographic variability is a prime component of habitat complexity, an ecological factor that both expresses and controls the abundance and distribution of many reef organisms. Following the acquisition of EAARL coverage over both mid-platform patch reefs and shelf-margin bank reefs within Biscayne National Park in August 2002, EAARL-based optical indices of topographic variability were evaluated at 15 patch reef and bank reef sites. Several sites were selected to match reefs previously evaluated in situ along underwater video and belt transects. The analysis used large populations of submarine topographic transects derived from the examination of closely spaced laser spot reflections along LIDAR raster scans. At all 15 sites, each LIDAR transect was evaluated separately to determine optical rugosity (Rotran), and the average elevation difference between adjacent points (Av(Eap)). Further, the whole-site mean and maximum values of Rotran and Av(Eap) for the entire population of transects at each analysis site, along with their standard deviations, were calculated. This study revealed that the greater habitat complexity of inshore patch reefs versus outer bank reefs results in relative differences in topographic complexity that can be discerned in the laser returns. Accordingly, LIDAR sensing of optical rugosity is proposed as a complementary new technique for the rapid assessment of shallow coral reefs.  相似文献

Salt marshes of the Indian River Lagoon, Florida (USA) were once prolific producers of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay their eggs on the infrequently-flooded high marsh surface when the soil surface is exposed. The eggs hatch when the high marsh is flooded by the infrequent high tides or summer rains. To control mosquito production, most of the salt marshes (over 16.200 ha) were impounded by the early 1970s. Flooding, usually by pumping water from the Lagoon, effectively controlled mosquitoes.However, impounding had a profoundly negative impact on the wetland plant, fish, and invertebrate communities. Isolation from the Lagoon cut off aquatic access by transient estuarine species that used the wetlands for feeding or as nursery area. In one study, the number of fish species dropped from 16 to 5 after impounding. Wetland vegetation within some impoundments was totally eliminated; other impoundments developed into freshwater systems.When tidal exchange is restored through hydrologic connection, usually by culverts installed through the perimeter dike, recovery to more natural conditions is often rapid. In one impoundment where wetland vegetation was totally eliminated, recovery of salt-tolerant plants began almost immediately. In another, cover of salt-tolerant plants increased 1,056% in less than 3 years. Fisheries species that benefitted the most were snook, ladyfish, and striped mullet. Over 1,500 juvenile snook were captured in a single 3-hr flood-tide culvert trap as they attempted to migrate into an impoundment. The zooplankton community rapidly returned to the more typical marsh-Lagoon community. Water quality and sediment sulfides returned to typical marsh values. Overall, reconnection enhances natural productivity and diversity, although water quality in the perimeter ditch, an artifact of dike construction, remains problematic.Earlier experiments demonstrated that flooding only during the summer mosquito breeding season provided as effective mosquito control as year-round flooding. In standard management, the impoundment is flooded in summer, then left open to the Lagoon through culverts the rest of the year. Culverts are typically opened when the fall sea level rise first floods the high marsh.Impoundment reconnection is being implemented by a multi-agency partnership. The total reconnected area is expected to reach 9,454 ha by the end of 1998, representing 60% of the impounded wetlands in the entire IRL system. Polysiphonia subtilissima Mont. Is reported for the first time from a freshwater environment. The presence of four pericentral cells, subdichotomous branching, apical trichoblasts and rhizoids arising from pericentral cells combined with a lack of cortication and reproductive cells is consistent with marine populations of this species. The range of filament length is 1.4–4.7 cm. Branch diameters are 38–76 μm and pericentral cell lengths are 58–125 μm. Batrachospermum heterocorticum sp. nov. is distinguished primarily by a developmental change in cortical filaments from typical cylindrical cells (5.0–7.9 μm diam in initial stages to enlarged, elliptical cells (12.9–24.1 μm diam) in mature axes. Another unique feature of this species is carpogonia with cylindrical, pedicellate trichogynes on stringht carpogonial branches in mid to outer portions of lateral whorls. Other characteristics of B. heterocorticum include the following: olive-green color, 2–6 cm length, dichotomous to trichotomous fascicles in 4–7 tiers, 385–647 μm whorl diameters, 109–198 μm carpospore diameters and relatively small “chantransia” filaments.  相似文献
