In strict symbiotic associations, the genetic structure of the symbiont often mirrors that of its host, with interesting implications for population dynamics and phylogeography. An unresolved case of symbiotic specificity and phylogeographic consequence is the relationship between the marine triclad Bdelloura candida and its host, the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus. A recent study by Riesgo et al. (2017, Marine Biology, 164, 111) identified a strong genetic break between populations of B. candida in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean but had minimal sampling around the Florida peninsula such that the exact location of the boundary zone was not specified. To solve this, a comprehensive analysis of 16S rRNA and ITS2 genetic markers was conducted from new collections around the Florida peninsula. A clear and significant genetic break was identified between populations of supposed B. candida between Cumberland Island, Georgia, and Mosquito Lagoon, Florida. This genetic break establishes two cryptic lineages, an Atlantic population as far south as Georgia and a Floridian population inclusive of the entire peninsula and Gulf of Mexico, potentially due to niche partitioning of the unique intertidal habitats of its horseshoe crab hosts in Florida. This result directly refutes the previous hypothesis that a population break exists between the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, and instead matches the genetic break of its host. Furthermore, a third cryptic lineage was identified in Key West. Overall, this work demonstrates the challenges in maintaining genetic connections between populations of both B. candida and L. polyphemus across their distributions, and poses meaningful implications for both species in the larger context of marine conservation and biodiversity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Population declines among birds are often linked to habitat change and associated increases in nest predation rates. In species of conservation concern identifying nest predators is an important first step in developing management strategies to mitigate low nesting success caused by depredation. Because predator composition varies geographically and with landscape factors habitat restoration may need to be tailored to reduce locally important predators. We used miniature video cameras to identify nest predators in a population of Florida Scrub-Jays ( Aphelocoma coerulescens ) significant to conservation. At 22 nests we observed 25 predation events; 22 (88%) of these events were nocturnal. Yellow rat snakes ( Elaphe obsoleta ) had the highest daily predation rate and accounted for 76% of egg and nestling losses. Florida Scrub-Jays are vulnerable to nocturnal nest predation because their vigilance behavior is ineffective against nocturnal predators, breeders cannot defend against nocturnal predators, and brooding females are at risk of being killed by nocturnal predators. If current habitat restoration efforts do not reduce numbers of yellow rat snakes and improve scrub-jay nesting success, management actions to reduce populations of nocturnal snakes may need to be considered.  相似文献

All broadleaf woody plants of pinelands and hammocks (upland areas) in the northern parts of Everglades National Park were defoliated by the strong winds of Hurricane Andrew in August 1992. Most plants re‐leafed within two months of the storm, at which time we tagged newly produced leaves of eight species (five species in two hardwood hammocks and four in two pineland sites; one species was studied in both habitats), and monitored individual leaf area lost or damaged monthly for three months. We marked a second cohort of new leaves on the same individuals four months later and monitored these for three months. Herbivory rates in leaves of the first cohort were lower than observed in pre‐hurricane studies on two of the species, and lower in the first cohort than in the second cohort in six of the eight species studied, indicating that most insect herbivores were virtually absent for the first few months after the storm. Additionally, most species produced significantly larger leaves in the first cohort than the second cohort, and leaves of the second cohort were not significantly different in size from pre‐hurricane leaves in one species for which pre‐hurricane data were available. The large disturbance of the hurricane defoliated and reduced the above‐ground biomass of the plants, but apparently also eliminated most herbivores and competition for light, facilitating the recovery of the plants.  相似文献

Acute toxicity and persistence of three insect repellents, deet and two piperidines (AI3-35765 and AI3-37220), were evaluated against mosquito larvae of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann (Diptera: Culicidae) in the laboratory, and against natural populations of Ae. albopictus in the field. In laboratory studies, the LC50 values of the repellents for first instars ranged between 0.005 and 0.021% (Ae. albopictus) and between 0.01 and 0.014% (An. albimanus) and, for fourth instars, between 0.019 and 0.034% (Ae. albopictus) and between 0.015 and 0.024% (An. albimanus). A 0.1% concentration of deet caused 90-100% mortality in first-instar Ae. albopictus for 4 weeks, whereas AI3-35765 and AI3-37220 at the same concentration killed 95-100% of larvae for 12 weeks and 98-100% of larvae for 33 weeks post-treatment, respectively. Deet and AI3-35765 at 0.1 % concentration resulted in complete mortality of first-instar An. albimanus for 3 weeks post-treatment, whereas AI3-37220 resulted in 91-99% larval mortalities for 35 weeks post-treatment. A 0.1% concentration of A13-37220 provided 77-98% larval mortality for 20 weeks and 63-97% larval mortality for 12 weeks post-treatment, respectively, against fourth-instar Ae. albopictus and An. albimanus.In the field, in artificial containers, the reduction of Ae. albopictus larvae caused by deet, AI3-35765 and AI3-37220 was 88-95% for 3-4 weeks, 98-100% for 7 weeks, and 82-100% for 13 weeks post-treatment, respectively. In used tyres, the same concentration of the repellents resulted in 100% reduction of Ae. albopictus larvae for 2 weeks (deet), 4 weeks (AI3-35765) and 5 weeks (AI3-37220) post-treatment. In cemetery flower vases, Aedes spp. larvae were eliminated for 4 weeks (deet) and 6 weeks post-treatment by both A13-35765 and AI3-37220. These topical repellents (particularly AI3-37220) have good potential for development and use in the management of container-inhabiting mosquitoes because they deter oviposition and kill larvae.  相似文献

Sexual development in malaria parasites involves multiple signal transduction pathways mediated by reversible protein phosphorylation. Here, we functionally characterised a protein phosphatase, Ser/Thr protein phosphatase 5 (PbPP5), during sexual development of the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei. The recombinant protein phosphatase domain displayed obvious protein phosphatase activity and was sensitive to PP1/PP2A inhibitors including cantharidic acid (IC50 = 122.2 nM), cantharidin (IC50 = 74.3 nM), endothall (IC50 = 365.5 nM) and okadaic acid (IC50 = 1.3 nM). PbPP5 was expressed in both blood stages and ookinetes with more prominent expression during sexual development. PbPP5 was localised in the cytoplasm of the parasite and highly concentrated beneath the parasite plasma membrane in free merozoites and ookinetes. Targeted deletion of the pbpp5 gene had no influence on asexual blood-stage parasite multiplication or the survival curve of the infected hosts. However, male gamete formation and fertility were severely affected, resulting in almost complete blockade of ookinete conversion and oocyst development in the Δpbpp5 lines. This sexual development defect was rescued by crossing Δpbpp5 with the female defective Δpbs47 parasite line, but not with the male defective Δpbs48/45 line, thus confirming the essential function of the pbpp5 gene in male gamete fertility. Furthermore, the aforementioned PP1/PP2A inhibitors all had inhibitory effects on exflagellation of male gametocytes and ookinete conversion. In particular, endothall, a selective inhibitor of PP2A, completely blocked exflagellation and ookinete conversion at ~548.3 nM. This study elucidated an essential function of PbPP5 during male gamete development and fertility.  相似文献

Human–American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) conflict in Florida, USA, has increased since the early 1970s, along with the recovery of the American alligator population. To better understand factors contributing to the risk of people being bitten by free-ranging alligators in Florida, we evaluated the trend of alligator bites during 1971–2014 and examined characteristics associated with bites on people documented during 1948–2014. We classified 372 bites as either unprovoked or unintentionally provoked and used these in further analyses. Major injuries to victims occurred in 247 bite incidents. The estimated annual number of bites resulting in major injury to the victim increased from 3.5 to 7.0 during 1971–2014. The number of bites per Florida resident did not show a significant trend during 1971–2014. No significant change occurred in the frequency of fatal attacks during 1971–2014. Monthly frequency of bites was positively correlated with both mean maximum and mean minimum air temperatures but was not significantly correlated with testosterone concentration in adult male alligators, suggesting that bites are more likely related to feeding rates associated with seasonal fluctuations in ambient temperature than to aggression by male alligators during the breeding season. A high percentage of bites (41.8%) occurred in unnamed water bodies, which were generally small or man-made. Most (93.7%) victims were Florida residents, and 58.7% resided close to the incident site. Victims were predominantly male (81.4%), and adults were more frequently victims than were adolescents or children. Most victims (93.9%) were in the water or near the shore when bitten. Victims were more likely to sustain major injuries if the bite occurred in deeper water. Male alligators were more frequently (76.9%) responsible for bites. We found only 1 instance in which a bite was associated with defense of eggs or young by an adult female alligator. Evidence of people feeding alligators before the bite was documented in 34.7% of bite incidents. Twenty-two fatalities were attributed to alligator attacks, but we could not discern a pattern in the ages of victims. Alligators responsible for severe or fatal bites were predominantly in good condition with few deformities or injuries. Most alligator bites in Florida appeared to be attempts at feeding, although 36.8% of incidents entailed a single bite followed by immediate release, suggesting that alligators were unsure about their prey or were biting in defense. The risk of alligator bites can be reduced by educating people likely to interact with alligators and by selectively removing problem alligators in human residential areas and water bodies used regularly by people for swimming, wading, and shoreline activities. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献
