The floral organogenesis of Potamogeton distinctus A. Benn. was observed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The floral buds are first initiated on the lower portion of inflorescence in alternating whorls of three. Each of the floral buds is subtended by a bract primordium during the early stages. The primordia of the floral appendages arise on the floral bud acropetally. Two lateral tepals are first initiated and then two median ones soon after. Stamens are normally initiated as elongate primordia opposite the tepals, with the two lateral stamens preceding the median ones. The two carpel primordia arise alternating with the stamens. In some flowers, one of the two gynoecial primordia becomes inactive soon after they are initiated, or only one carpel primordium is initiated. The present observation of the gynoecial development supports the viewpoint that the evolution of flower in Potamogeton involves a reduction in number of parts. The existence of bract primordium during the early stages in many species of Potamogeton indicates that the absence of bractin mature flowers should be the result of reduction.  相似文献

Long-, mid-, and short-styled clonal accessions of oca (Oxalis tuberosa) were intercrossed in a complete diallelic design. Pollen tube growth in styles was monitored in all diallelic crosses. Pollen fertility was estimated by two tests: staining of pollen grains with aceto-carmine and detection of β-galactosidase activity by the substrate X-Gal. The two methods of pollen fertility estimation were equally useful to detect fertility levels. Pollen originating from short stamens had the highest fertility (85%) and pollen from long stamens had the lowest fertility (70%). Pollen fertility was high throughout, but its degree varied with the stylar morph on which the pollen was formed. Long-styled accessions had the highest rates of fertile pollen. Differences in pollen fertility at different anther levels in the same style morph were also apparent. Pollen grain diameter of the six morph-anther level combinations was inversely correlated with pollen fertility. Pollen grains from long stamens were the largest and pollen grains from short stamens were the smallest. Neither pollen fertility nor pollen grain size had an influence on pollen tube growth in the style or on fruit and seed set. Pollen tubes growing within the styles were inhibited at a different level for each of the 18 cross combinations in the diallel. Although legitimate crosses had greatest pollen tube growth, some of the illegitimate inter- and intramorph crosses had equally high scores. Of all illegitimate crosses, mid-styled seed parents had the lowest level of stylar incompatibility. Fruit and seed set were highly correlated with the extent of pollen tube growth in the style. The number of pollen tubes entering ovules in a flower was in good agreement with the number of seeds produced per fruit. Therefore, it is concluded that stylar incompatibility is the major determinant of limited seed formation in oca even in the most successful legitimate cross combinations. 对马缨丹(Lantana camara)、黄花马缨丹(Lantana camara cv.‘Flava')和紫花马缨丹(Lantanamontevidensis)花序上中华微刺盲蝽(Campylomma chinensis)的密度调查结果表明,中华微刺盲蝽在3种颜色马缨丹花序上的分布与花序颜色无关(偏相关系数为0.240,P=0.147,n=40),但与花序中的黄胸蓟马数量和花序中小花数的偏相关系数分别为0.512(P<0.0001,n=0)和0.451(P<0.0001,n=40),达到极显著水平.中华微刺盲蝽对不同颜色粘卡的试验也表明,该盲蝽寻找植物寄主时,视觉刺激并不起作用.四臂嗅觉仪的试验结果表明,中华微刺盲蝽对马缨丹的气味有强烈的趋向作用.采用固相微萃取和气相-质谱联用技术分析表明,3种马缨丹花序的挥发物有7种相同的化学成分.  相似文献

The nursery pollination system of fig trees (Ficus) results in the plants providing resources for pollinator fig wasp larvae as part of their male reproductive investment, with selection determining relative investment into pollinating wasps and the pollen they carry. The small size of Ficus pollen suggests that the quantities of pollen transported by individual wasps often limits male reproductive success. We assessed variation in fig wasp pollen loads and its influence on seed production in actively pollinated (Ficus montana) and passively pollinated (Ficus carica) dioecious fig trees.The ratios of number of male flowers on number of female flowers in a glasshouse-maintained F. montana population were highly variable. When fig wasps were introduced into receptive female figs, the resulting seed numbers were strongly linked to the numbers of pollinators that had been seeking access to pollen, relative to the number of anthers in their natal figs. In F. carica estimates of the amounts of pollen produced per fig and the quantities of pollen carried by emerging fig wasps suggest that less than 10% of the pollen is transported. Pollinators of F. carica that emerged earlier from figs carried more pollen, and also generated more seeds when introduced into receptive female figs.We show here that all pollinators are not equally valuable and producing more pollinators is not necessarily a good option in terms of Ficus male fitness. Previous results on F. montana figs showed that only around half of the flowers where pollinators lay eggs produced adult offspring. The amount of pollen collected by young female fig wasps may be a major determinant of their reproductive success.  相似文献

Flowering and fruiting biology of Magnolia ovata was studied in Atlantic forests in the interior of São Paulo State, Brazil. The large, bisexual flowers are protogynous, nocturnal, thermogenic and emit a strong scent in two consecutive evenings. In the first night of anthesis, the flowers are in the pistillate stage and thermogenesis starts at about sunset and lasts about 3 h. In the second night, the flowers enter the staminate stage and produce heat for 4 h. Heat is generated by the petals, gynoecium and anthers. Temperatures measured inside the petals reach 26.7 °C and 31.9 °C in the pistillate and staminate stages, 6.0 and 10.6 °C above ambient air, respectively. In the pistillate stage, the perianth opens after sunset and closes tightly a few hours later, and remains closed until the next evening. The initial opening and closing, however, is not synchronous for all flowers during the night. In the following evening, flowers in the staminate stage again open and remain so until the petals drop. Scent compounds, analyzed by GC–MS, contain C5-branched chain compounds, aliphatics, benzenoids and monoterpenoids. Emission of the most prominent compound, C5-branched methyl 2-methyl butyrate, commences before flower opening and continues throughout anthesis, but is accentuated in the thermogenic pistillate and staminate stages. Female and male individuals of only one beetle species, the dynastid scarab Cyclocephala literata, are attracted to the scented flowers in both pistillate and staminate stages. Once inside the flowers they feed on the petals and mate. Tests with synthetic methyl 2-methyl butyrate indicate that this compound is a strong attractant for the beetles. Because this scent compound is strongly emitted in both pistillate and staminate stages, the beetles fly indiscriminately between flowers of both stages. This behavior enhances pollen mixing and effective cross-pollination of the self-compatible species. The evolutionary history of Magnolia appears to be influenced by an ancestral condition of dynastid scarab beetle pollination. Large magnolia flowers are best explained as an archaic structure resulting from the initial association of tropical American species of section Talauma with large and voracious dynastid beetles.  相似文献

Floral scent has been suggested to be a key factor both in the diversification of the angiosperms, and the evolution and intra-specific differentiation of plants. In this study, we determined the ploidy and nuclear DNA content of B. macrostachya plants from 14 different populations across Yunnan using flow cytometry. The components of the floral scent were also identified using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Within these 14 populations, two new ploidy levels, tetraploid (2n = 4x) and octaploid (2n = 8x) were detected and identified for the first time here. The mean 2C DNA content of the tetraploids ranged from 1.81 ± 0.01 to 1.92 ± 0.02 G, but was 3.52 ± 0.15 to 3.73 ± 0.04 G in the octaploids. In addition, thirty-two scent compounds were identified, most of which could be categorized into four major classes: fatty acid derivatives (49.60 ± 7.45%); benzenoids (21.24 ± 3.96%); monoterpenes (25.28 ± 3.70%) and sesquiterpenes (3.88 ± 1.05%). Both tetraploids and octaploids emitted large relative amounts of 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone (42.21 ± 3.52% and 21.57 ± 3.10%, respectively) and benzadehyde (20.42 ± 2.35% and 28.45 ± 2.37%, respectively). Multivariate analysis of floral scent chemistry revealed marked dissimilarity (49.49%) between tetraploids and octaploids, and 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone and benzadehyde contributed greatly to this divergence in chemical scent profile. Our results suggest that B. macrostachya is a species complex with four different ploidy levels (2n = 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x). We believe the complex is in a process of pollinator-mediated rapid divergence.  相似文献

The pollination biology of Norantea brasiliensis (Marcgraviaceae) was studied in the rain forest of southeastern Brazil. This plant presents bizarre, brush-type racemous inflorescences bearing numerous flowers and extrafloral cup-shaped nectaries. Flower anthesis is diurnal, nectar production is continuous and copious, and the sticky pollen is readily removed by visitors during the first morning hours. The ruby-coloured inflorescences were visited by eight species of hummingbirds (Trochilidae), and 10 species of passerine birds (three Coerebidae and seven Thraupidae). Hummingbirds hovered while probing for nectar and touched flowers occasionally, whereas passerine birds perched and made contact with flowers habitually. Due to differences in flower-visiting and general foraging behaviour, perching birds act as better pollen vectors than hovering birds. The inflorescence of Norantea brasiliensis seems well fitted for pollination by passerine birds, and the hexose-dominated nectar supports this idea. Pollination syndrome trends within Marcgraviaceae may stem from insect-pollinated, condensed and spike-like inflorescences which would give rise to bird-pollinated, brush-type inflorescences. From the same basic condensed inflorescence, bat-pollinated umbelliform inflorescence may be derived from bird-pollinated, pendulous and corymb-like inflorescences. These postulated inflorescence types are found among the extant species of Marcgraviaceae.  相似文献

 The agronomic potential of a Brassica napus variant with petalless flowers was compromised by an associated detrimental change in leaf morphology. Genetic analysis demonstrated the cosegregation of genes controlling both morphologies. Two STAP loci controlling the production of flowers with stamenoid petals were mapped to homoeologous locations in the genome of B. napus. The STAP loci were probably duplicate genes because they exhibited an epistatic interaction such that only plants homozygous for recessive stap alleles at both loci expressed the variant phenotype. The CURLY LEAF (CLF) gene of Arabidopsis thaliana pleiotropically influences both flower and leaf morphologies. The cloned CLF gene of Arabidopsis was homologous to a polymorphic B. napus locus coincident with one of the B. napus STAP loci. The possibility that CLF is a candidate gene for STAP suggests that the variant stap alleles of B. napus exert pleiotropic effects over both flower and leaf morphologies.
