In contrast to the patagial membranes of gliding vertebrates, the aerodynamic surfaces used by falling wingless ants to direct their aerial descent are unknown. We conducted ablation experiments to assess the relative contributions of the hindlegs, midlegs and gaster to gliding success in workers of the Neotropical arboreal ant Cephalotes atratus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Removal of hindlegs significantly reduced the success rate of directed aerial descent as well as the glide index for successful flights. Removal of the gaster alone did not significantly alter performance relative to controls. Equilibrium glide angles during successful targeting to vertical columns were statistically equivalent between control ants and ants with either the gaster or the hindlegs removed. High-speed video recordings suggested possible use of bilaterally asymmetric motions of the hindlegs to effect body rotations about the vertical axis during targeting manoeuvre. Overall, the control of gliding flight was remarkably robust to dramatic anatomical perturbations, suggesting effective control mechanisms in the face of adverse initial conditions (e.g. falling upside down), variable targeting decisions and turbulent wind gusts during flight.  相似文献

Flagellar motion has been an active area of study right from the discovery of bacterial chemotaxis in 1882. During chemotaxis, E. coli moves with the help of helical flagella in an aquatic environment. Helical flagella are rotated in clockwise or counterclockwise direction using reversible flagellar motors situated at the base of each flagellum. The swimming of E. coli is characterized by a low Reynolds number that is unique and time reversible. The random motion of E. coli is influenced by the viscosity of the fluid and the Brownian motion of molecules of fluid, chemoattractants, and chemorepellants. This paper reviews the literature about the physics involved in the propulsion mechanism of E. coli. Starting from the resistive-force theory, various theories on flagellar hydrodynamics are critically reviewed. Expressions for drag force, elastic force and velocity of flagellar elements are derived. By taking the elastic nature of flagella into account, linear and nonlinear equations of motions are derived and their solutions are presented.  相似文献

Comparative floral anatomy of Pontederiaceae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Floral anatomy is described in eight species (representing five genera) of Pontederiaceae, and floral ontogeny is described in Pontederia cordata. The results are assessed in the context of recent phylogenetic work on Pontederiaceae, which indicates that the unilocular ovary condition has been achieved by two different, non-homologous routes in Pontederiaceae: via loss of interlocular septa in Heteranthera and Hydrothrix , and via pseudomonomery in Pontederia , which has a single fertile carpel. Absence of septal nectaries has evolved more than once in Pontederiaceae, at least in Heterantha and Monochoria , probably due to a transfer of the insect reward from nectar to pollen in these taxa. The presence of an elliptical or linear unvascularized appendage on the abaxial outer stamen in Monochoria is also probably correlated with enantiostyly. In Pontederia , air spaces in the ovary wall are modified into canals, each with a ring of apparently secretory epithelial cells.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 395–408.  相似文献

Abstract The genes determining flagellar antigen specificities H36, H47 and H53 in the respective E. coli standard H test strains were found to be alleles of the flagellin gene hagB . Until now, only the allele encoding the flagellar antigen H3 has been identified. The chromosomal regions of flagellin genes hagB in E. coli and H2 in Salmonella were non-homologous as these genes integrated at different sites in the E. coli K-12 chromosome and were unable to replace each other. The hagA allele encoding E. coli flagellar antigen H48 was insensitive to the repressor produced by Salmonella gene rhl or by its putative analog in E. coli .  相似文献

The sequence of a novel cGMP-regulated, tetrameric, K(+) selective channel (Sp-tetraKCNG) was discovered in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. The Sp-tetraKCNG is a single polypeptide made of four KCNG domains similar to voltage-dependent Na(+) and Ca(2+) channels. Each KCNG domain has six transmembrane segments (S1-S6), the ion pore having the K(+) selectivity signature GYGD and a cyclic nucleotide-binding domain (CNBD). This novel channel is evolutionary located between K(+)-selective and voltage-dependent EAG channels and voltage-independent cationic CNG channels. Bilayer reconstitutions demonstrate such a cGMP-regulated K(+) selective channel in sea urchin spermatozoa.  相似文献
