 Immunochemical investigation of the seed storage proteins of some large genera in the tribe Peucedaneae (Umbelliferae) has clearly demonstrated the heterogeneity of Angelica and Peucedanum and the comparative homogeneity of Ferula. Among the taxa included in Angelica, Ostericum appears to be the most distant from the type species A. sylvestris, and should be treated as an independent genus. On the contrary, Archangelica is serologically similar to Angelica s. str. A rather complicated picture has been revealed within Peucedanum s. l. Serotaxonomical studies show a relationship pattern largely corresponding to the infrageneric classification of Thellung (1926). In dioecious plant species, males and females are thought to have dissimilar allocation patterns. Females are believed to invest more in reproduction and less in growth and maintenance than males. This differential investment between sexes could result in distinct growth patterns and contrasting survival rates, thereby affecting the sex ratio of a population and the age and size distribution of males and females, possibly leading to habitat segregation according to sex. These effects might become more apparent under particularly limiting conditions, such as in nutrient-deficient soils or in climatically stressed environments. To verify these predictions, growth patterns, microsite characteristics, and age and size distribution of male and female individuals were compared, and population sex ratio was determined in three populations of the dioecious shrub Juniperus communis var. depressa (Cupressaceae, Pinophyta) along a short latitudinal gradient on the eastern coast of Hudson Bay (Northern Québec, Canada). We found that the northernmost population had a male-biased sex ratio, but that the southernmost one had a higher proportion of females. Our results failed to reveal any significant differences in radial growth patterns, mean sensitivity, annual elongation of the main axis, and size and age frequency distribution between males and females in any population. Furthermore, there was no evidence of microhabitat segregation according to sex as indicated by the lack of differences in the physicochemical characteristics of the substrate under males and females. Clearly, the expected ecological consequences of a presumed greater investment of females in reproduction were not apparent even under the very stressful conditions prevailing on subarctic dunes. Many factors could reduce differences in the cost of reproduction between males and females, such as the number and quality of reproductive structures produced annually by individuals of each sex, the possible photosynthetic activity of the immature female cones, and the complexity of the source/sink relationship within individuals. Abstract. Starved females of Aedes communis (DeGeer) had significantly shorter mean lifespans than females with access to one blood meal and/or sugar meals. For the starving females, lifespan was significantly correlated with wing length. This correlation was not found in sugar- and/or blood-fed females. Fructose and sucrose had similar effects on mosquito lifespan. The 25% and 50% (w/w) solutions of each, increased mean lifespans to 37.8 ± 7.2 and 34.9 ± 9.1 days, respectively. A 10% solution, of either sugar, was significantly inferior, mean lifespan 23.2 ± 10.2 days. The initial sugar meal was very important for female longevity. Subsequent meals aided in ovarian development. One sugar meal, one blood meal, and several sugar meals during oogenesis was found to be the optimal diet for the female mosquitoes in this study.  相似文献

Agglutination of S49 mouse lymphoma cells by Ricinus communis I agglutinin can be reversed by the competing haptenic saccharide, lactose, soon after agglutination, but after further incubation in the absence of lectin the agglutination reaction could not be reversed by lactose and the cells remained as multicell aggregates. The irreversibility of S49 cell agglutination was time, temperature and lectin concentration dependent and its onset correlated with ultrastructurally observed deformation of adjacent cell surfaces and an increase in the proportion of adjacent cell surface areas in close apposition within multicell aggregates. Pretreatment of S49 cells with cytochalasin B or cytochalasin B plus vinblastine enhanced R. communis I agglutinin-mediated agglutination, while vinblastine alone and fluoride plus azide had essentially no effect. When drug-treated cells were agglutinated and then incubated in lectin-free drug-containing media for various times prior to lactose addition, the drug effects were more pronounced. Cytochalasin B alone or with vinblastine inhibited lactose reversal of S49 cell agglutination compared to the drug-free controls, while fluoride plus azide enhanced hapten reversibility. Electron microscopic analysis revealed that the onset of agglutination irreversibility correlated with cell surface deformation in the drug-treated cells. Cell aggregates that were more readily reversible by lactose (fluoride plus azide) were unchanged or less deformed, while S49 aggregates treated with cytochalasin B plus vinblastine were more deformed compared to controls without drugs. These experiments suggest a role for cell surface deformability as an important secondary effect during lectin-mediated cell agglutination of 849 lymphoma cells.  相似文献

We studied carbon‐based secondary and structural compounds (CBSSCs) in Myrtus communis, Erica arborea, and Juniperus communis co‐occurring in a natural CO2 spring site and in a nearby control site in a Mediterranean environment. Leaf concentrations of phenolics and CBSSCs, such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNCs), and lipids were measured monthly (phenolics) and every two months (the other compounds) throughout a year. There was a slight seasonal trend towards maximum concentrations of most of these CBSSCs during autumn–winter and minimum values during the spring season, particularly in Myrtus communis. For most of the CBSSCs and species, there were no consistent or significant patterns in response to the elevated [CO2] (c. 700 μmol mol?1) of the spring site. These results were not due to a dilution effect by increased structural or nonstructural carbon. Therefore, in contrast to many experimental studies of CO2 enrichment, mainly conducted for short periods, there were no greater concentrations of phenolics, and, as in many of these studies, there were neither greater concentrations of the other CBSSCs. These results do not agree with the predictions of the carbon source‐sink hypotheses. Possible causes of this disagreement are discussed. These causes include the complex heterogeneous environmental conditions and the variability of resource availabilities in the field, photosynthetic down‐regulation, and/or the homeostatic and evolutionary nature of organisms. These results suggest evolutionary adaptive responses to changes in CO2. They also suggest caution in attributing increased CBSSC concentrations to elevated [CO2] at long‐term scale in natural conditions, and therefore in their implications for plant–herbivore interactions and for decomposition.  相似文献
