Skates by virtue of their abundance and widespread occurrence appear to play an influential role in the food webs of demersal
marine communities. However, few quantitative dietary studies have been conducted on this elasmobranch group. Therefore, to
better understand the ecological role of skates, standardized diet compositions and trophic level (TL) values were calculated
from quantitative studies, and compared within and among skate and shark taxa. Prey items were grouped into 11 general categories
to facilitate standardized diet composition and TL calculations. Trophic level values were calculated for 60 skate species
with TL estimates ranging from 3.48 to 4.22 (mean TL = 3.80 ± 0.02 SE). Standardized diet composition results revealed that
decapods and fishes were the main prey taxa of most skate species followed by amphipods and polychaetes. Correspondingly,
cluster analysis of diet composition data revealed four major trophic guilds, each dominated by one of these prey groups.
Fish and decapod guilds were dominant comprising 39 of 48 species analyzed. Analysis of skate families revealed that the Arhynchobatidae
and Rajidae had similar TL values of 3.86 and 3.79 (t-test, P = 0.27), respectively. The Anacanthobatidae were represented by a single species, Cruriraja parcomaculata, with a TL of 3.53. Statistical comparison of TL values calculated for five genera (Bathyraja, Leucoraja, Raja, Rajella, Rhinoraja) revealed a significant difference between Bathyraja and Rajella (t-test, P = 0.03). A positive correlation was observed between TL and total length (L
T) with larger skates (e.g. >100 cm L
T) tending to have a higher calculated TL value (>3.9). Skates were found to occupy TLs similar to those of several co-occurring
demersal shark families including the Scyliorhinidae, Squatinidae, and Triakidae. Results from this study support recent assertions
that skates utilize similar resources to those of other upper trophic-level marine predators, e.g. seabirds, marine mammals,
and sharks. These preliminary findings will hopefully encourage future research into the trophic relationships and ecological

Feeding responses of the oligophagous tobacco hornworm to allelochemicals prevalent in their host plants were determined in food choice-tests using filter paper discs laced with a test solution or water (control). Six solanaceous alkaloids, tomatine, tomatidine, solanine, solanocapsine, atropine and nicotine, were tested and only tomatine and solanocapsine were found to influence preference behavior. Solanocapsine (5 mM) deters feeding whereas tomatine (1 mM) stimulates feeding slightly. No synergistic effect of either tomatine or tomatidine with sucrose was found.The responses to tomatine are affected by previous feeding experience. Tomatine slightly stimulates feeding in larvae reared on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), but slightly deters feeding in larvae reared on Jerusalem cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum). Such induced preference is absent for the other alkaloids tested, which indicates that these alkaloids do not by themselves induce preferences for the plants containing them.The non-alkaloid allelochemicals, chlorogenic acid, rutin, and 2-tridecanone also influenced food choice behavior. Chlorogenic acid is slightly stimulatory at its natural concentration (1mM), but strongly deterrent at higher concentrations. Rutin stimulates feeding in a concentration-dependent manner. Its activity must be due to the glycosylated structure, because both the aglycone (quercetin) and the sugar moiety (rutinose) are neutral. Removal of the glucose part of rutin, as in quercitrin, results in feeding deterrent activity. 2-Tridecanone is neutral at its concentration in cultivated tomato (1 mM), but strongly deterrent and toxic at higher concentrations. Preference behavior is not affected by solanesol, GABA, and a mixture of host plant compounds stimulatory for anothe solanaceous-specific feeder, the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata).We conclude that the prevalent solanaceous alkaloids and other allelochemicals tested do not play important roles in food selection of the tobacco hornworm, although some may make small contributions.
Résumé Des experiences de choix de chenilles oligophages de M. sexta ont été réalisees avec des disques de papier filtre imbiles d'eau ou de solutions des substances allélochimiques dominantes dans les plantes consommées. Sur les six alcaloïdes de solanées examinés: tomatine, tomatidine, solanine, solanocapsine, atropine et nicotine, seuls la tomatine et la solanocapsine ont influé sur le choix; la solanocapsine (5 mM) empêche la prise de nourriture, tandis que la tomatine (1 mM) la stimule légèrement. Aucun effet synergique de la tomatine ou de la tomatidine n'a été observé en présence de sucrose.La réponse à la tomatine est modifiée par la prise de nourriture antérieure. Elle stimule légèrement l'alimentation de chenilles élevées sur tomates (Lycopersicon esculentum), mais dissuade légèrement les chenilles élevées sur Solanum pseudocapsicum. II n'y a pas d'action induite semblable avec les autres alcalïdes examinés, ce qui indique que ces alcaloïdes ne peuvent pas induire par eux-mêmes de préférences pour les plantes qui les contiennent.Des substances allélochimiques non-alcaloïdes: acide chlorogénique, rutine, et 2-tridécanone, influent aussi sur le comportement de choix alimentaire. Injection of morphine or d-ala-2-met-5-enkephalinamide (DALA) into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) produced a dose dependent increase in feeding in rats. DALA increased feeding within 45 minutes; morphine within 90 minutes. Naloxone injected into the PVN diminished the effect. DALA increased water intake only when food was available, suggesting the primary effect was on feeding. In summary, an enkephalin analogue induced feeding, and an opiate receptor blocker attenuated it; therefore the PVN may contain opiate receptors that facilitate feeding. 相似文献

目的分析新生儿胆汁淤积症患儿肠道菌群特征及其与分娩方式、喂养方式的关系。方法选择2018年6月至2019年6月我院收治的40例新生儿胆汁淤积症患儿作为观察组,选择同期入院的120例健康新生儿作为对照组,比较两组对象肠道菌群分布情况。各组对象进一步按不同喂养方式分为母乳喂养组和混合喂养组,按不同分娩方式分为阴道分娩组和剖宫产组,分析各组新生儿肠道菌群与分娩方式、喂养方式的相关性。结果观察组新生儿粪便中双歧杆菌、乳杆菌数量及双歧杆菌/大肠埃希菌值[(7.53±0.57)lg copies/g、(8.12±0.71)lg copies/g、1.06±0.18]明显少于对照组[(9.58±0.64)lg copies/g、(8.64±0.75)lg copies/g、1.39±0.22],大肠埃希菌数量[(7.28±0.85)lg copies/g]明显多于对照组[(6.81±0.63)lg copies/g]。观察组中,阴道分娩与剖宫产分娩患儿粪便中双歧杆菌、乳杆菌、大肠埃希菌数量及双歧杆菌/大肠埃希菌值差异均有统计学意义(P0.05)。观察组中,母乳喂养与混合喂养新生儿粪便中双歧杆菌、乳杆菌、大肠埃希菌数量及双歧杆菌/大肠埃希菌值差异均有统计学意义(P0.05)。结论新生儿胆汁淤积症患儿肠道菌群存在异常,且受到分娩方式和喂养方式的影响。 相似文献

Ecological specialization is a central driver of adaptive evolution. However, selective pressures may uniquely affect different ecomorphological traits (e.g., size and shape), complicating efforts to investigate the role of ecology in generating phenotypic diversity. Comparative studies can help remedy this issue by identifying specific relationships between ecologies and morphologies, thus elucidating functionally relevant traits. Jaw shape is a dietary correlate that offers considerable insight on mammalian evolution, but few studies have examined the influence of diet on jaw morphology across mammals. To this end, I apply phylogenetic comparative methods to mandibular measurements and dietary data for a diverse sample of mammals. Especially powerful predictors of diet are metrics that capture either the size of the angular process, which increases with greater herbivory, or the length of the posterior portion of the jaw, which decreases with greater herbivory. The size of the angular process likely reflects sizes of attached muscles that produce jaw movements needed to grind plant material. Further, I examine the impact of feeding ecology on body mass, an oft-used ecological surrogate in macroevolutionary studies. Although body mass commonly increases with evolutionary shifts to herbivory, it is outperformed by functional jaw morphology as a predictor of diet. Body mass is influenced by numerous factors beyond diet, and it may be evolutionarily labile relative to functional morphologies. This suggests that ecological diversification events may initially facilitate body mass diversification at smaller taxonomic and temporal scales, but sustained selective pressures will subsequently drive greater trait partitioning in functional morphologies. 相似文献

Summary Reduced glutathione evokes a feeding response, the tentacle-ball formation inHydra japonica. This response consists of at least 5 components (R1–R5). We raised 6 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), each of which depressed a specific subset of these components, and we also examined the immunocytochemical localization of antigens with these mAbs at light microscopic level. The 2 mAbs that depressed R2 and R4 bound to the cnidocils of the desmoneme and the stenotele nematocytes; the 3 mAbs that depressed R5 bound to the apical surface adjacent to the cnidocils of the nematocytes; and the 2 mAbs that depressed R1 and R3 bound to the apical spot structures of unidentified cells in the ectoderm.Together with the specificity of the action of the mAbs on the behavioral response, the correspondence between the effects on the response and the structures visualized with these mAbs suggests that these structures include components of the receptor-effector system relevant to chemoreception. 相似文献

The process of digestion of captured feeds in a pitcher, an insect-trapping organ, ofNepenthes was studied. Changes in bacterial population, pH and NH4
+ concentrations in pitcher juice were examined. Strong activities of both acid- and alkaline phosphatase, phosphoamidase,
esterase C4 and esterase C8 were found in the pitcher juice. Optimum pH of proteases in the juice and those secreted from
bacteria showed pH 3.0 and pH 8.0–9.0, respectively. Twenty six strains of bacteria were isolated from 4 pitchers: 10 strains
were gram positive, 16 strains were gram negative (10 strains had casein hydrolase activity). A proton excretion was induced
by NH4
+ released from the added solutions, and accordingly, the pH of the solutions fell. As a simulation model of the digestion
process of feeds in pitcher juice and polypeptone solution was added into the washed pitcher. A good correlation was found

The study investigated the effect of feeding regime and sludge age on starch utilization. For this purpose, parallel sequencing batch reactors were operated with pulse and continuous feeding of soluble starch at sludge ages of 8 and 2 days. Pulse feeding induced almost complete conversion of starch to glycogen, while storage was lowered and accompanied with direct growth under continuous feeding, regardless of sludge age. Low sludge age did not alter simultaneous storage and utilization for direct growth but it slightly favoured direct utilization due to faster growing biomass. Experimental results suggested adsorption of starch onto biomass as a preliminary removal mechanism prior to hydrolysis at sludge age of 8 days. Adsorption was not noticeable as substrate removal, glycogen generation and dissolved oxygen decrease were synchronous at sludge age of 2 days. We hypothesized that increased feeding frequency in captive harbor seals would increase nutrient loads and thus reduce retention time and the digestive efficiency of natural prey. We measured daily feed intake and excretion during 6 feeding trials and fed herring (49% lipid), pollock (22% lipid) or an equal mix of each diet over 24 months. Animals were accustomed to feeding at either high or low frequency. Body mass and intake did not vary with season. Although mean retention times were similar between diets and feeding frequencies, solute and particulate digesta markers separated at high feeding frequency. Consistent dry matter digestibility resulted in greater gut fill from pollock than from herring. Digestible energy intakes from pollock were approximately 25% greater than from either herring or the mixed diet. Lipid digestibility of herring declined from 90% to 50% when lipid intake exceeded 60 g kg–0.75 day–1. Our hypothesis of a trade-off between intake and digestion was not supported for protein but was supported for lipid. Results of this study imply that a flexible digestive system for harbor seals can compensate for ingesting prey of lower energy density by increasing gut fill and enhancing protein and lipid assimilation, to sustain digestible energy intake.Abbreviations DM
