Summary Vibra tome sections of male hamster brains were treated immunohistochemically with LHRH antiserum, and the anatomical distribution of LHRH immunoreactive cells and nerve fibers was assessed. LHRH-cell bodies are found in the ventral hypothalamus that includes its preoptic, anterior and central parts, in the septum, the olfactory tubercle, the main and accessory olfactory bulb, and the prepiriform cortex. In addition, extracerebral LHRH-neurons and ganglia exist in LHRH-positive nerves at the ventromedial surface of the olfactory tubercle and bulb as well as in olfactory nerves. Dense networks of LHRH-immunoreactive fibers are found in all regions where LHRH-cell bodies exist. Intraseptal connections reach the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis, the subfornical organ, and the lateral ventricle. Dorsolateral projections from the septum can be traced via the fimbria hippocampi and alveus to the ventral hippocampus, via the stria terminalis to the amygdala and piriform cortex. Ventrolateral projections extend from the level of the olfactory tubercle and preoptic-anterior hypothalamic area via the ventral amygdalofugal pathway to the prepiriform and piriform cortex as well as the amygdala. Dorsal supracallosal projections via the stria longitudinalis are seen in the induseum griseum and the cingulate cortex. Caudal efferents reach the habenula, interpeduncular nucleus, midbrain raphe, and central gray of the rostral fourth ventricle via the stria medullaris and fasciculus retroflexus and by a ventral projection via the periventricular and subventricular hypothalamus. A major portion of this ventrocaudal projection gives rise to a dense network in the median eminence. We have undertaken an in vivo genetic approach to the analysis of negative feedback control by uridine triphosphate (UTP) of the yeast carbamoylphosphate synthetase-aspartate transcarbamoylase multifunctional protein (CPSase-ATCase). Using an analog of uracil, 5-fluorouracil, we have constructed a screening system leading, in one step, to selection and cloning of a functional aspartate transcarbamoylase that is defective in negative feedback control by UTP. Due to the nature of the screen, spontaneous or UV-induced mutants could be recovered. Well-characterized cloned mutants have been sequenced and reveal one or two modifications in single codons leading to single amino acid replacements. These amino acid changes occurred either in the CPSase or ATCase domains, abolishing their sensitivity to regulation but not their catalytic activities. Hence the regulatory and catalytic sites are distinct. With the same screening system, it may also be possible to enlarge the scope of the molecular study of the feedback processes to include equivalent proteins in fungi as well as higher eukaryotes. 相似文献

Summary Oscillations in a class of piecewise linear (PL) equations which have been proposed to model biological control systems are
considered. The flows in phase space determined by the PL equations can be classified by a directed graph, called a state
transition diagram, on anN-cube. Each vertex of theN-cube corresponds to an orthant in phase space and each edge corresponds to an open boundary between neighboring orthants.
If the state transition diagram contains a certain configuration called a cyclic attractor, then we prove that for the associated
PL equation, all trajectories in the regions of phase space corresponding to the cyclic attractor either (i) approach a unique
stable limit cycle attractor, or (ii) approach the origin, in the limitt→∞. An algebraic criterion is given to distinguish the two cases. Equations which can be used to model feedback inhibition

Some shallow lakes switch repeatedly back and forth between a vegetation dominated clear-water state and a contrasting turbid
state. Usually such alternations occur quite irregularly, but in some cases the switches between states are remarkably regular.
Here we use data from a well-studied Dutch lake and a set of simple models to explore possible explanations for such cyclic
behavior. We first demonstrate from a graphical model that cycles may in theory occur if submerged macrophytes promote water
clarity in the short run, but simultaneously cause an increased nutrient retention, implying an accumulation of nutrients
in the long run. Thus, although submerged plants create a positive feedback on their own growth by clearing the water, they
may in the long run undermine their position by creating a slow “internal eutrophication”. We explore the potential role of
two different mechanisms that may play a role in this internal eutrophication process using simulation models: (1) reduction
of the P concentration in the water column by macrophytes, leading to less outflow of P, and hence to a higher phosphorus
accumulation in the lake sediments and (2) a build-up of organic matter over time resulting in an increased sediment oxygen
demand causing anaerobic conditions that boost P release from the sediment. Although the models showed that both mechanisms
can produce cyclic behavior, the period of the cycles caused by the build-up of organic material seemed more realistic compared
to data of the Dutch Lake Botshol in which regular cycles with a period of approximately 7 years have been observed over the

The screening of catalysts, substrates or conditions in the early stages of bioprocess development requires an enormous number of experiments and is a tedious, expensive and time-consuming task. Currently available screening systems can only be operated in batch or fed-batch mode, which can lead to severe misinterpretations of screening results. For example, catalysts that are inhibited by substrates or accumulating products will be excluded from further investigations in the early stages of process development despite the fact that they might be superior to other candidates in a different operational mode. Important and advantageous properties such as turnover stability can also be overshadowed by product inhibition. The aim of this study was to develop a novel screening system that enables continuous feeding of substrates and continuous removal of products. Mechanical perturbation of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) internodes results in reduced elongation and increased diameter of the internodes (thigmomorphogenesis). Perturbation of a single lower internode results in thigmorphogenesis in that internode and all of those internodes above it, the degree of which depends on the age (size) of the internodes and the frequency of perturbation. Application of ethephon to the internodes mimics mechanical perturbation. Early removal of the shoot tip or the cotyledons does not effect thigmomorphogenesis, indicating that those organs do not exert control over the response. Mechanical perturbation of one plant of a pair grafted together at the first internodes results in thigmomorphogenesis in both plants. This indicates the transport of some factor from the mechanically perturbed donor to the non-treated receiver. Evidence is presented to support the contention that ethylene is not this transportable factor. 相似文献

Ray‐finned fishes are notable for having flexible fins that allow for the control of fluid forces. A number of studies have addressed the muscular control, kinematics, and hydrodynamics of flexible fins, but little work has investigated just how flexible ray‐finned fish fin rays are, and how flexibility affects their response to environmental perturbations. Analysis of pectoral fin rays of bluegill sunfish showed that the more proximal portion of the fin ray is unsegmented while the distal 60% of the fin ray is segmented. We examined the range of motion and curvatures of the pectoral fin rays of bluegill sunfish during steady swimming, turning maneuvers, and hovering behaviors and during a vortex perturbation impacting the fin during the fin beat. Under normal swimming conditions, curvatures did not exceed 0.029 mm?1 in the proximal, unsegmented portion of the fin ray and 0.065 mm?1 in the distal, segmented portion of the fin ray. When perturbed by a vortex jet traveling at approximately 1 ms?1 (67 ± 2.3 mN s.e. of force at impact), the fin ray underwent a maximum curvature of 9.38 mm?1. Buckling of the fin ray was constrained to the area of impact and did not disrupt the motion of the pectoral fin during swimming. Flexural stiffness of the fin ray was calculated to be 565 × 10?6 Nm2. In computational fluid dynamic simulations of the fin‐vortex interaction, very flexible fin rays showed a combination of attraction and repulsion to impacting vortex dipoles. Due to their small bending rigidity (or flexural stiffness), impacting vortices transferred little force to the fin ray. Conversely, stiffer fin rays experienced rapid small‐amplitude oscillations from vortex impacts, with large impact forces all along the length of the fin ray. Segmentation is a key design feature of ray‐finned fish fin rays, and may serve as a means of making a flexible fin ray out of a rigid material (bone). Thigmomorphogenesis: Ethylene evolution and its role in the changes observed in mechanically perturbed bean plants 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
Mechanical perturbations, in the form of either rubbing or wounding, cause ethylene evolution from bean internodes ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Cherokee Wax). This evolution begins 45 to 60 min after perturbation or wounding and peaks about 2 h later. Maximal thigmomorphogenesis occurs if internodes are perturbed when they are 10 mm or less in length. Maximal ethylene evolution, however, occurs in longer internodes. When one internode is perturbed, ethylene evolution is not observed from other internodes even though they respond thigmomorphogenetically by exhibiting decreased elongation. Ethylene evolution is apparently a result of increased 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) production after perturbation. Inhibitors of ACC and ethylene synthesis block increased radial growth but not reduced elongation. Ethylene may therefore be only one of several factors causing thigmomorphogenesis. 相似文献
