Galectin 3 belongs to a family of glycoconjugate-binding proteinsthat participate in cellular homeostasis by modulating cellgrowth, adhesion, and signaling. We studied adult galectin 3null mutant (Gal 3/) and wild-type (WT) mice togain insights into the role of galectin 3 in the kidney. Byimmunofluorescence, galectin 3 was found in collecting duct(CD) principal and intercalated cells in some regions of thekidney, as well as in the thick ascending limbs at lower levels.Compared to WT mice, Gal 3/ mice had ~11% fewerglomeruli (p < 0.04), associated with kidney hypertrophy(p < 0.006). In clearance experiments, urinary chloride excretionwas found to be higher in Gal 3/ than in WT mice(p < 0.04), but there was no difference in urinary bicarbonateexcretion, in glomerular filtration, or urinary flow rates.Under chronic low sodium diet, Gal 3/ mice hadlower extracellular fluid (ECF) volume than WT mice (p <0.05). Plasma aldosterone concentration was higher in Gal 3/than in WT mice (p < 0.04), which probably caused the observedincrease in -epithelial sodium channel (-ENaC) protein abundancein the mutant mice (p < 0.001). Chronic high sodium dietresulted paradoxically in lower blood pressure (p < 0.01)in Gal 3/ than in WT. We conclude that Gal 3/mice have mild renal chloride loss, which causes chronic ECFvolume contraction and reduced blood pressure levels. 相似文献

An unusual ultrastructural association of smooth membranes and glycogen particles: The glycogen body

Summary An electron microscope study of the epithelium of rabbit fallopian tube demonstrated a rarely described intracytoplasmic structure consisting of an array of smooth membranes associated with glycogen particles. This organelle is seen exclusively in the ciliated cells. A three-dimensional reconstruction of these glycogen bodies has been made from serial sections. The peripheral localization of the rough-surfaced membranes in continuity with intra-corpuscular smooth membranes, which have lost their granules, suggests a possible role for the rough membranes in the genesis of the smooth membranes of these glycogen bodies. Cope's rule, the tendency towards evolutionary increases in body size, is a long-standing macroevolutionary generalization that has the potential to provide insights into directionality in evolution; however, both the definition and identification of Cope's rule are controversial and problematic. A recent study [J. Evol. Biol. 21 (2008) 618] examined body size evolution in Mesozoic birds, and claimed to have identified evidence of Cope's rule occurring as a result of among-lineage species sorting. We here reassess the results of this study, and additionally carry out novel analyses testing for within-lineage patterns in body size evolution in Mesozoic birds. We demonstrate that the nonphylogenetic methods used by this previous study cannot distinguish between among- and within-lineage processes, and that statistical support for their results and conclusions is extremely weak. Our ancestor-descendant within-lineage analyses explicitly incorporate recent phylogenetic hypotheses and find little compelling evidence for Cope's rule. Cope's rule is not supported in Mesozoic birds by the available data, and body size evolution currently provides no insights into avian survivorship through the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction. 相似文献

We show that fruit bodies of Flammulina velutipes can be induced in complete darkness after a sharp temperature reduction (23° to 16°C). However, the fruit bodies that form in complete darkness have a long stipe with an undeveloped pileus on the top (pinhead fruit bodies) and are thinner and whiter than the normal fruit bodies which are formed in the light. This finding suggests that F. velutipes fruit bodies cannot mature in complete darkness. However, when we irradiated the fruit bodies that had formed in complete darkness, a pileus developed immediately, and 4 days later the separation between the stipe and the pileus could be observed. Immediately after light exposure, the stipe also thickened and became increasingly pigmented. The stipe elongation was inhibited until 8 days after light exposure, although stipe elongation progressed very quickly thereafter. Basidospores were also visible in the gills 8 days after light exposure. We consider that the basidiospore development is involved in this rapid stipe elongation, which aids the effective dispersal of basidiospores. 相似文献

Physiological models provide useful summaries of complex interrelated regulatory functions. These can often be reduced to simple input requirements and simple predictions for pragmatic applications. This paper demonstrates this modeling efficiency by tracing the development of one such simple model, the Heat Strain Decision Aid (HSDA), originally developed to address Army needs. The HSDA, which derives from the Givoni-Goldman equilibrium body core temperature prediction model, uses 16 inputs from four elements: individual characteristics, physical activity, clothing biophysics, and environmental conditions. These inputs are used to mathematically predict core temperature (Tc) rise over time and can estimate water turnover from sweat loss. Based on a history of military applications such as derivation of training and mission planning tools, we conclude that the HSDA model is a robust integration of physiological rules that can guide a variety of useful predictions. The HSDA model is limited to generalized predictions of thermal strain and does not provide individualized predictions that could be obtained from physiological sensor data-driven predictive models. Zorion guttigerum is a flower-visiting longhorned beetle endemic to New Zealand. Sexual selection of this species in relation to the body size and color form of different sexes was investigated in the field. The population sex ratio, based on censuses of feeding and mating sites (flowers), is male-biased. Females are significantly larger than males. Both sexes have antennae of similar length but the antennal length relative to the elytral length is greater in males than in females, and the antennal length of males increases more with an increase in body size than that of females. Both sexes have dark blue (DB) and yellowish-brown (YB) individuals. Both pair-bonded and solitary males are similar in elytral and antennal length. In pair-bonded males, DB individuals are significantly more numerous than YB ones, but in solitary males, the number of both color forms is similar. Males tend to have territory protection behavior, fighting with and chasing away rival males from feeding and mating sites. Larger males usually win the fight but the size-dependent fighting advantage does not translate into mating success. Male color plays an important role in mating success, with DB males having a significantly better chance to mate than YB males. Furthermore, male body size and color also have interactions in mating success: males of DB color morph obtain a greater mating advantage according to body size. Pair-bonded females are significantly larger and have longer antennae than solitary females, suggesting that males prefer larger females for mating. In addition, females of DB color morph with longer antennae are also preferred by males for mating. The significance of these findings is discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACTHot water bathing – a Japanese traditional practice – has not been evaluated for its association with night- and sleep-time blood pressure (BP) in large population. In this longitudinal analysis, bathing parameters and ambulatory BP were repeatedly measured for 2 nights in 758 Japanese elderly individuals. Participants were divided into three groups according to tertile values of time soaked in the bathtub (Duration: tertile value, 11 and 15 min), time from bathing-end to bedtime (Time before bedtime: tertile value, 42 and 106 min), and temperature of hot water in the bathtub (Water temp: tertile value, 40.3 and 41.2 °C). Participants’ mean age was 70.9 years, and mean night- and sleep-time systolic BP (SBP) and dipping were 115.1 ± 16.1, 114.2 ± 16.2 mmHg, and 14.2 ± 8.8%, respectively. Multivariable mixed-effect linear regression models adjusted for potential confounding factors suggested that nighttime SBP was significantly lower in the intermediate Time before bedtime group by 1.7 mmHg (95% CI, 0.2–3.1) and in the short group by 1.9 mmHg (95% CI, 0.1–3.7) than that in the long group. Dipping was significantly greater in the intermediate Time before bedtime group by 1.8% (95% CI, 0.7–2.9) and in the short group by 1.8% (95% CI, 0.6–3.1) than that in the long group. These associations were consistent regarding sleep-time SBP. Conversely, Water temp and Duration did not significantly associate with any ambulatory BP parameter. Remarkably, Time before bedtime significantly prolonged with increases in tertiles of Water temp (P for trend = 0.006). In conclusion, the findings of this study revealed that Japanese hot water bathing, especially the short time from bathing-end to bedtime, was associated with lower night- and sleep-time BP and greater dipping in an elderly population. 相似文献

ABSTRACTWe have investigated the magnitude of diurnal variation in back squat and bench press performance using the MuscleLab force velocity transducer. Thirty resistance-trained males (mean ± SD: age 21.7 ± 1.4 years; body mass 80.5 ± 4.5 kg; height 1.79 ± 0.06 m) underwent two sessions at different times of day: morning (M, 07:30 h) and evening (E, 17:30 h). Each session included a period when rectal temperature (Trec) was measured at rest, a 5-min standardized 150 W warm-up on a cycle ergometer, then defined programme of bench press (at 20, 40 and 60 kg) and back squat (at 30, 50 and 70 kg) exercises. A linear encoder was attached to an Olympic bar used for the exercises and average force (AF), peak velocity (PV) and time-to-peak velocity (tPV) were measured (MuscleLab software; MuscleLab Technology, Langesund, Norway) during the concentric phase of the movements. Values for Trec at rest were higher in the evening compared to morning values (0.48°C, P < 0.0005). Daily variations were apparent for both bench press and back squat performance for AF (1.9 and 2.5%), PV (8.3 and 12.7%) and tPV (?16.6 and ?9.8%; where a negative number indicates a decrease in the variable from morning to evening). There was a main effect for load where AF and tPV increased and PV decreased from the lightest load to the heaviest for both bench press and back squat (47.1 and 80.2%; 31.7 and 57.7%; ?42.1 and ?73.9%; P < 0.0005 where a negative number indicates a decrease in the variable with increasing load). An interaction was found only for tPV, such that the tPV occurs earlier in the evening than the morning at the highest loads (60 and 70 kg) for both bench press and back squat, respectively (mean difference of 0.32 and 0.62 s). In summary, diurnal variation in back squat and bench press was shown; and the tPV in complex multi-joint movements occurs earlier during the concentric phase of exercise when back squat or bench press is performed in the evening compared to the morning. This difference can be detected using a low cost, portable and widely available commercial instrument and enables translation of past laboratory/tightly controlled experimental research in to main-stream coaching practice. 相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry is considered an indirect measure of phenotypic quality and can directly impose high costs in terms of aerodynamics in flying birds. The accuracy of orientation during migration in small passerines is relevant for survival and reproduction, but patterns of individual variation in preferred directions have received little attention. I tested the hypothesis that symmetrical individuals are able to more accurately orient in the correct direction than asymmetrical individuals. Wing, tail and tarsus asymmetry were measured in blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla), redstarts (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) and robins (Erithacus rubecula), and the birds were tested for orientation in Emlen funnels, at two stopover sites in N Europe. I then matched individuals for test date, species, sex and age, and assigned them to either of two groups: symmetrical or asymmetrical. The groups were not different in any of the orientation parameters. The lack of effect of asymmetry on orientation may imply that: (i) choices of different direction reflected different, but equally effective migratory strategies; (ii) symmetrical birds could afford longer stopovers while asymmetrical ones be less motivated to migrate; (iii) differences in orientation behaviour would have reflected different quality only under novel or anomalous conditions or (iv) fluctuating asymmetry is not a useful measure of quality. 相似文献
