We describe the first record of amphisexual care in an insect with uniparental male care. Male Rhynocoris tristis are noted for aggressively guarding multiple egg masses. When a male is unable or unwilling to guard eggs, a female that has previously contributed eggs returns to the egg mass and defends it until the eggs hatch. We compared the frequency and intensity of parental aggression in both sexes and found no difference in either form of guarding behavior. Evidence of amphisexual care in R. tristis provides an opportunity to quantify the cost of care in both sexes within a single species.An erratum to this article can be found at 相似文献

As weather deteriorates, breeding animals have a diverse array of options to ensure survival. Because of their mobility, birds can easily abandon territories to seek out benign conditions away from the breeding site. The timing of abandonment, however, may have repercussions for territory size, mate quality, reproductive success, and survival. There is a large body of evidence indicating that the adrenocortical response to stress plays a role in mediating the onset and maintenance of this behavioral switch. Here we develop a model describing the interactions of weather, food availability, body condition, and stress physiology in initiating departure from the breeding site. We tested the model using a population of white-crowned sparrows breeding at high elevation in the Sierra Nevada, where severe weather at the beginning of the breeding season often induces temporary abandonment of breeding territories and facultative altitudinal migration to lower elevation refugia. The data show that (1). during inclement weather, exogenous corticosterone delays return to the breeding site after territory abandonment; (2). during good weather, exogenous corticosterone alone does not induce territory abandonment, but does increase activity range around the breeding site; and (3). the magnitude of the corticosteroid response to stress is inversely related to body condition of the sparrow. 相似文献

Corynebacterium glutamicum, a gram-positive soil bacterium, has been regarded as an aerobe because its growth by fermentative catabolism or by anaerobic
respiration has, to this date, not been demonstrated. In this study, we report on the anaerobic growth of C. glutamicum in the presence of nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor. C. glutamicum strains R and ATCC13032 consumed nitrate and excreted nitrite during growth under anaerobic, but not aerobic, conditions.
This was attributed to the presence of a narKGHJI gene cluster with high similarity to the Escherichia coli
narK gene and narGHJI operon. The gene encodes a nitrate/nitrite transporter, whereas the operon encodes a respiratory nitrate reductase. Transposonal
inactivation of C. glutamicum
narG or narH resulted in mutants with impaired anaerobic growth on nitrate because of their inability to convert nitrate to nitrite. Further

A new chemolithoautotrophic, facultatively alkaliphilic, extremely salt-tolerant, sulfur-oxidizing bacterium was isolated from an alkaline hypersaline lake in the Altai Steppe (Siberia, Russia). According to 16S rDNA analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, strain HL 17T was identified as a new species of the genus Thialkalivibrio belonging to the subdivision of the Proteobacteria for which the name Thialkalivibrio halophilus is proposed. Strain HL 17T is an extremely salt-tolerant bacterium growing at sodium concentrations between 0.2 and 5 M, with an optimum of 2 M Na+. It grew at high concentrations of NaCl and of Na2CO3/NaHCO3 (soda). Strain HL 17T is a facultative alkaliphile growing at pH range 7.5–9.8, with a broad optimum between pH 8.0 and 9.0. It used reduced inorganic sulfur compounds (thiosulfate, sulfide, polysulfide, elemental sulfur, and tetrathionate) as energy sources and electron donors. In continuous culture under energy limitation, thiosulfate was stoichiometrically oxidized to sulfate. In sodium carbonate medium under alkaline conditions, the maximum growth rate was similar, while the biomass yield was lower as compared with the NaCl-grown culture. The maximum sulfur-oxidizing capacity measured in washed cells was higher in the soda buffer independent of the growth conditions. The compatible solute content of the biomass was higher in the sodium chloride-grown culture than in the sodium carbonate/bicarbonate-grown culture. The data suggest that the osmotic pressure differences between soda and NaCl solutions might be responsible for the difference observed in compatible solutes production. In free-spawning marine invertebrates, larval development typically proceeds by one of two modes: planktotrophy (obligate larval feeding) from small eggs or lecithotrophy (obligate non-feeding) from relatively large eggs. In a rare third developmental mode, facultative planktotrophy, larvae can feed, but do not require particulate food to complete metamorphosis. Facultative planktotrophy is thought to be an intermediate condition that results from an evolutionary increase in energy content in the small eggs of a planktotrophic ancestor. We tested whether an experimental reduction in egg size is sufficient to restore obligate planktotrophy from facultative planktotrophy and whether the two sources of larval nutrition (feeding and energy in the egg) differentially influence larval survival and juvenile quality. We predicted, based on its large egg size, that a reduction in egg size in the echinoid echinoderm Clypeaster rosaceus would affect juvenile size but not time to metamorphosis. We reduced the effective size of whole (W) zygotes by separating blastomeres at the two- or four-cell stages to create half- (H) or quarter-size (Q) “zygotes” and reared larvae to metamorphosis, both with and without particulate food. Larvae metamorphosed at approximately the same time regardless of food or egg size treatment. In contrast, juveniles that developed from W zygotes were significantly larger, had higher organic content and had longer and more numerous spines than juveniles from H or Q zygotes. Larvae from W, H and Q zygotes were able to reach metamorphosis without feeding, suggesting that the evolution of facultative planktotrophy in C. rosaceus was accompanied by more than a simple increase in egg size. In addition, our results suggest that resources lost by halving egg size have a larger effect on larval survival and juvenile quality than those lost by withholding particulate food. 相似文献

Oscillibacter valericigenes is a mesophilic, strictly anaerobic bacterium belonging to the clostridial cluster IV. Strain Sjm18-20T (=NBRC 101213T =DSM 18026T) is the type strain of the species and represents the genus Oscillibacter Iino et al. 2007. It was isolated from the alimentary canal of a Japanese corbicula clam (Corbicula japonica) collected on a seacoast in Shimane Prefecture in Japan. Phylogenetically, strain Sjm18-20T is closest to uncultured bacteria in digestive tracts, including the enriched cells thought to represent Oscillospira guilliermondii Chatton and Perard 1913. The isolated phylogenetic position and some distinct characteristics prompted us to determine the complete genome sequence. The 4,410,036 bp chromosome and the 60,586 bp plasmid were predicted to encode a total of 4,723 protein-coding genes. 相似文献
