We derive a first-order bias-corrected maximum likelihood estimator for the negative binomial dispersion parameter. This estimator is compared, in terms of bias and efficiency, with the maximum likelihood estimator investigated by Piegorsch (1990, Biometrics46, 863-867), the moment and the maximum extended quasi-likelihood estimators investigated by Clark and Perry (1989, Biometrics45, 309-316), and a double-extended quasi-likelihood estimator. The bias-corrected maximum likelihood estimator has superior bias and efficiency properties in most instances. For ease of comparison we give results for the two-parameter negative binomial model. The microbial surface and flocculability were qualitatively characterized through the combination of the surface thermodynamic and the extended DLVO approaches, with Ralstonia eutropha, a polyhydroxybutyrate-producing bacterium, as an example. The negativity of the ζ potential of R. eutropha decreased from the initial −19.5 to −11 mV in its cultivation with the consumption of glucose. The total interfacial free energy (ΔG adh) was changed from −80 to 28.5 mJ m−2 in its entire growth process. This suggests that the bacterial surface changed from hydrophobic into hydrophilic, resulting in an alteration of its surface characteristics and flocculability in its different growth phases. As a result, the stability ratio of suspensions increased with the increasing cultivation time, indicating that the cell particles became more repulsive with each other and led to a more stable suspension of R. eutropha in its cultivation. The obtained information in this work might be useful for better understanding the surface characteristics and the flocculability and even manipulating its flocculability in the microbial growth process.  相似文献

Relevant source area of pollen (RSAP) and pollen productivity for 11 key taxa characteristic of the pasture woodland landscape of the Jura Mountains, Switzerland, were estimated using pollen assemblages from moss polsters at 20 sites. To obtain robust pollen productivity estimates (PPEs), we used vegetation survey data at a fine spatial-resolution (1 × 1 m2) and randomized locations for sampling sites, techniques rarely used in palynology. Three Extended R value (ERV) submodels and three distance-weighting methods for plant abundance calculation were applied. Different combinations of the submodels and distance-weighting methods provide slightly different estimates of RSAP and PPEs. Although ERV submodel 1 using 1/d (d = distance in meters) best fits the dataset, PPE values for heavy pollen types (e.g. Abies) were sensitive to the method used for distance-weighting. Taxon-specific distance-weighting methods, such as Prentice’s model, emphasize the intertaxonomic differences in pollen dispersal and deposition, and are thus theoretically sound. For the dataset obtained in this project, Prentice’s model was more appropriate than other distance-weighting methods to estimate PPEs. Most of the taxa have PPEs equal to (Fagus, Plantago media and Potentilla-type), or higher (Abies, Picea, Rubiaceae and Trollius europaeus) than Poaceae (PPE = 1). Acer, Cyperaceae, and Plantago montana-type are low pollen producers. This set of PPEs will be useful for reconstructing heterogeneous, mountainous pasture woodland landscapes from fossil pollen records. The RSAP for moss polsters in this semi-open landscape region is ca. 300 m.  相似文献

Household structure may have strong effects on reproduction. This study uses household demographic data for 59 women in a Caribbean village to test evolutionary hypotheses concerning variation in reproductive strategies. Father-absence during childhood, current household composition, and household economic status are predicted to influence age at first birth, number of mates, reproductive success, and pair-bond stability. Criterion variables did not associate in a manner indicative of r- and K-strategies. Father-absence in early childhood had little influence on subsequent reproduction. Household wealth and alloparenting were positively associated with age at first birth. Alloparenting was negatively associated with reproductive success. Women in long-term conjugal unions had higher reproductive success than did single women. Number of adult male kin resident in the household was negatively associated with women’s number of mates. 采用重叠二体近似方法和建立在从算水平上的扩展负本征值因数计算方法(extended negative factor counter method)研究了球形红假单胞菌(Rhodobacter sphaeroides(Van Niel)Imhoff,Truper et Pfennin)中兴合反应中心中蛋白链L及M的电子结构。结果表明:(1)对组成蛋白链L(M)的前线轨道有重要贡献的氨基酸残基分布在L链的自由螺旋区(M链的α螺旋区)。由于自由螺旋是有柔曲性的,它易于在电子转移的过程中改变其构象并降低体系的能量,而α螺旋结构却相对稳定,这种差别有可能是光合反庆中心中电子转移只沿L支进行的原因之一。(2)与特殊对分子及辅助叶绿素分子形成轴向配位的组氨酸残基对于特殊对P和辅助叶绿素分子的ELUMO有重要影响,但此组氨酸的相应分子轨道的贡献并没有出现在蛋白链的前线轨道组成中。这意味着色素分子与蛋白链之间的相互作用对蛋白链前线轨道的贡献没有影响,但却能影响相应色素分子的ELUMO能级。  相似文献

The life-cycle greenhouse gaseous emissions and primary exergy resources consumption associated with a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF) were investigated. The subject of study was a wetland for municipal wastewater treatment with a 700-person-equivalent capacity. The effects of two types of emergent aquatic macrophytes (Phragmites australis and Schoenoplectus californicus) and seasonality on greenhouse gas (GHG) gas emissions, the environmental remediation cost (ERC) and the specific environmental remediation cost (SERC) were assessed. The results indicate that GHG emissions per capita (12–22 kgCO2eq/p.e/yr) and primary exergy resources consumed (24–27 MJ/m3) for the HSSF are lower than those of a conventional wastewater treatment plant (67.9 kgCO2eq/p.e/yr and 96 MJ/m3). The SERC varied between 176 and 216 MJ/kg biological oxygen demand (BOD5) removal, which should be further reduced by 20% for an improved BOD5 removal efficiency above 90%. The low organic matter removal efficiency is associated with a high organic load and low bacterial development. Seasonality has a marked effect on the organic removal efficiency and the SERC, but the macrophyte species does not.  相似文献

Problems of establishing equivalence or noninferiority between two medical diagnostic procedures involve comparisons of the response rates between correlated proportions. When the sample size is small, the asymptotic tests may not be reliable. This article proposes an unconditional exact test procedure to assess equivalence or noninferiority. Two statistics, a sample-based test statistic and a restricted maximum likelihood estimation (RMLE)-based test statistic, to define the rejection region of the exact test are considered. We show the p-value of the proposed unconditional exact tests can be attained at the boundary point of the null hypothesis. Assessment of equivalence is often based on a comparison of the confidence limits with the equivalence limits. We also derive the unconditional exact confidence intervals on the difference of the two proportion means for the two test statistics. A typical data set of comparing two diagnostic procedures is analyzed using the proposed unconditional exact and asymptotic methods. The p-value from the unconditional exact tests is generally larger than the p-value from the asymptotic tests. In other words, an exact confidence interval is generally wider than the confidence interval obtained from an asymptotic test.  相似文献

Gas composition is an important component of any micro-environment. Insects, as the vast majority of living organisms, depend on O2 and CO2 concentrations in the air they breathe. Low O2 (hypoxia), and high CO2 (hypercarbia) levels can have a dramatic effect. For phytophagous insects that live within plant tissues (endophagous lifestyle), gas is exchanged between ambient air and the atmosphere within the insect habitat. The insect larva contributes to the modification of this environment by expiring CO2. Yet, knowledge on the gas exchange network in endophagous insects remains sparse. Our study identified mechanisms that modulate gas composition in the habitat of endophagous insects. Our aim was to show that the mere position of the insect larva within plant tissues could be used as a proxy for estimating risk of occurrence of hypoxia and hypercarbia, despite the widely diverse life history traits of these organisms. We developed a conceptual framework for a gas diffusion network determining gas composition in endophagous insect habitats. We applied this framework to mines, galls and insect tunnels (borers) by integrating the numerous obstacles along O2 and CO2 pathways. The nature and the direction of gas transfers depended on the physical structure of the insect habitat, the photosynthesis activity as well as stomatal behavior in plant tissues. We identified the insect larva position within the gas diffusion network as a predictor of risk exposure to hypoxia and hypercarbia. We ranked endophagous insect habitats in terms of risk of exposure to hypoxia and/or hypercarbia, from the more to the less risky as cambium mines > borer tunnels  galls > bark mines > mines in aquatic plants > upper and lower surface mines. Furthermore, we showed that the photosynthetically active tissues likely assimilate larval CO2 produced. In addition, temperature of the microhabitat and atmospheric CO2 alter gas composition in the insect habitat. We predict that (i) hypoxia indirectly favors the evolution of cold-tolerant gallers, which do not perform well at high temperatures, and (ii) normoxia (ambient O2 level) in mines allows miners to develop at high temperatures. Little is known, however, about physiological and morphological adaptations to hypoxia and hypercarbia in endophagous insects. Endophagy strongly constrains the diffusion processes with cascading consequences on the evolutionary ecology of endophagous insects.  相似文献
