Products of 24 presumptive enzyme loci were used to analyse the consequences on genetic structure and variation of the Chondrostoma lusitanicum population decline within the Tejo basin. This rare cyprinid is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and has a very restricted distribution. Five samples from the Tejo catchment were compared with a sample from a small basin, the Samarra, that has not suffered obvious anthropogenic pressures and where the fish is still abundant. Heterozygosity and polymorphism were higher overall in the Samarra. Several lines of evidence indicate a high degree of population subdivision within the Tejo basin. In fact, about half of the total gene diversity detected in the Tejo population was due to differences among samples. This differentiation appeared to be caused by genetic drift and possibly differential local selection, coupled with reduced gene flow among localities. The accelerated process of habitat degradation occurring in the lowland streams of the Tejo basin will lead to the inevitable reduction of intraspecies genetic diversity. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Cricket model systems have greatly enhanced our knowledge about mate choice and sexual selection. However, no studies exist that take seasonal dynamics into account and that follow individual males over the complete adult stage in the wild. In the present study, all adult field crickets ( Gryllus campestris L.) were individually marked and measured in a population in central Germany and their behaviour was followed over their life from May to July 2000.
2. The population reached a maximum of 108 males within 10 days and continuously declined thereafter. Daily mortality was positively correlated with burrow-changing activity, which was highest at high mean temperatures. Median burrow occupation time was short at 1 day but males stayed up to 34 days in one burrow. Heavy males stayed longer in burrows and achieved a higher age.
3. Male displacement was on average 2.8 m per day and up to 284 m during their life. Displacement and lifespan were negatively correlated.
4. Burrows were highly aggregated at the meadow in areas of vegetation cover <85%. Aggregation of males increased with advancing season and declining population size. Consequently, nearest-neighbour distances remained stable at 5 m until the 50th day of the study.

We examined the literature on the effects of habitat fragmentation and disturbance on howler monkeys (genus Alouatta) to (1) identify different threats that may affect howlers in fragmented landscapes; (2) review specific predictions developed in fragmentation theory and (3) identify the empirical evidence supporting these predictions. Although howlers are known for their ability to persist in both conserved and disturbed conditions, we found evidence that they are negatively affected by high levels of habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation. Patch size appears to be the main factor constraining populations in fragmented habitats, probably because patch size is positively related to food availability, and negatively related to anthropogenic pressures, physiological stress and parasite loads. Patch isolation is not a strong predictor of either patch occupancy or population size in howlers, a result that may be related to the ability of howlers to move among forest patches. Thus, we propose that it is probable that habitat loss has larger consistent negative effects on howler populations than habitat fragmentation per se. In general, food availability decreases with patch size, not only due to habitat loss, but also because the density of big trees, plant species richness and howlers' home range size are lower in smaller patches, where howlers' population densities are commonly higher. However, it is unclear which vegetation attributes have the biggest influence on howler populations. Similarly, our knowledge is still limited concerning the effects of postfragmentation threats (e.g. hunting and logging) on howlers living in forest patches, and how several endogenous threats (e.g. genetic diversity, physiological stress, and parasitism) affect the distribution, population structure and persistence of howlers. More long‐term studies with comparable methods are necessary to quantify some of the patterns discussed in this review, and determine through meta‐analyses whether there are significant inter‐specific differences in species' responses to habitat loss and fragmentation. Biodiversity across a landscape is a product of both historical events and ongoing contemporary forces. The past and present factors that influence black bear Ursus americanus diversity on the Alexander Archipelago and mainland of Southeast Alaska were investigated by assessing nuclear genetic variation. The natural fragmentation of the region, the high vagility of black bears and their possible recent post-Pleistocene colonization to Southeast Alaska allowed us to discern between past and present forces characterizing diversity. Two known black bear lineages, estimated previously with mitochondrial DNA to have diverged 1.8 million years ago, remained evident in data from more rapidly evolving nuclear genetic markers. Two nuclear genetic clusters geographically correspond to the lineages, suggesting that contemporary movement since colonization (likely beginning 18 000 cybp) has not been sufficient to eliminate genetic differences between the highly divergent lineages. Concomitantly, the clearest pattern of genetic diversity is related to contemporary geographic patterns; contemporary geography differs from geography immediately after deglaciation due to sea-level change. Narrow saltwater straits, expansive ice fields, narrow beach fringes and saltwater inland bays separate genetically distinct groupings of black bears. 相似文献

1. Thirteen time series, varying from 17 to 27 years, of the abundance of Vespula germanica and V. vulgaris from lowland England are examined. The time series depend on either spring queens and workers taken in Malaise or suction traps, or collected colonies. 2. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the abundance of V. germanica declined abruptly but that of V. vulgaris did not. 3. During the early 1980s, the 2‐year cycle of annual abundance of V. vulgaris changed to a nearly perfectly damped pattern of annual abundances. 4. The most likely factor causing these population changes was the increased use of pesticides acting directly by killing the wasps and indirectly by reducing their food resources. 5. The difference in response of the two species to increased pesticide use may be related to a difference in foraging ability. 相似文献
