The applicability of some diatom methods to quality assessment of differenttypes of Finnish rivers was compared using dominant taxa of diatomcommunities and nutrient level estimations using Trophic Diatom Index(TDI) and a new Phosphorus Diatom Equation (PDE) [Tot. Pcalc (g l-1) = 39 – 0.278 ol-% – 0.117 olme-% – 0.346me-% – 0.006 meeu-% + 1.193 eu-%; n = 97; r2 = 0.742;SE = 17.4]. Vitis vinifera red berries are characterized by anthocyanins whose chemical structures are among the simplest encountered in higher plants. On the contrary, many plants, including orchids, petunias, red cabbage, elderberries, potatoes for instance, have developed very complicated anthocyanins featuring side-chains at the available positions of the aglycone skeleton. Such pigments were shown to possess bio-physico-chemical properties not to be seen with the grape common anthocyanins. Among beverages (water, tea, beer, wine, coffee, juices, milk), red wine is the only one whose organoleptic properties improve with time and this is called ageing. The grape/fresh red wine pigments, after a few months, disappear from the wine giving birth to new pigments resulting from the wine spontaneous chemistry allowing it to remain red for many years. What are the wine pigments and why are they so stable is the purpose of this mini-review. The structural simplicity of grape anthocyanins and the long lasting colour of red wine is another French paradox; we call it French paradox II.  相似文献

Two isozymes (AIV I and AIV II) of soluble acid invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) were purified from Japanese pear fruit through procedures including (NH(4))(2)SO(4) precipitating, DEAE-Sephacel column chromatography, Concanavalin A (ConA)-Sepharose affinity chromatography, hydroxyapatite column chromatography and Mono Q HR 5/5 column chromatography. The specific activities of purified AIV I and AIV II were 2670 and 2340 (nkat/mg protein), respectively. AIV I was a monomeric enzyme of 80 kDa, while AIV II may be also a monomeric enzyme, which is easy to be cleaved to 52 kDa and 34 kDa polypeptide during preparation by SDS-PAGE. The Km values for sucrose of AIV I and AIV II were 3.33 and 4.58 mM, respectively, and optimum pH of both enzyme activities was pH 4.5.  相似文献

Betalains are natural pigments recently considered as compounds with potential antioxidative properties. In this work, ex vivo plasma spiking of pure either betanin or indicaxanthin, followed by isolation of low density lipoprotein (LDL), and measurement of its resistance to copper-induced oxidation, has been used to research if these betalains can bind to LDL and prevent oxidation of LDL lipids. When pooled human plasma from 10 healthy volunteers was incubated in the presence of 25-100 μM either betanin or indicaxanthin, incorporation of both compounds in LDL was observed, with a maximum binding of 0.52±0.08, and 0.51±0.06 nmoles of indicaxanthin and betanin, respectively, per mg LDL protein. Indicaxanthin-enriched and betanin-enriched LDL were more resistant than homologous native LDL to copper-induced oxidation, as assessed by the elongation of the induction period. The incorporated indicaxanthin, however, appeared twice as effective as betanin in increasing the length of the lag phase, while both compounds did not affect the propagation rate. Both betalains were consumed during the inhibition period of lipid oxidation, and delayed consumption of LDL-beta carotene. Indicaxanthin, but not betanin, prevented vitamin E consumption at the beginning of LDL oxidation, and prolonged the time of its utilization. The resistance of LDL to oxidation when vitamin E and indicaxanthin acted separately in a sequence, was lower than that measured when they were allowed to act in combination, indicating some synergistic interaction between the two molecules. No prooxidant effect over a large concentration range of either betanin or indicaxanthin was observed, when either betalain was added to the LDL system undergoing a copper-induced oxidation.

These results show than indicaxanthin and betanin may bind to LDL, and are highly effective in preventing copper-induced lipid oxidation. Interaction with vitamin E appears to add a remarkable potential to indicaxanthin in the protection of LDL. Although molecular mechanisms remain uncompletely understood, various aspects of the action of betanin and indicaxanthin in preventing LDL lipid oxidation are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of placing solid implants containing Fe sulfate in branches of Fe-deficient pear and peach trees on the composition of the xylem sap have been studied. Iron sulfate implants are commercially used in northeastern Spain to control iron chlorosis in fruit trees. Implants increased Fe concentrations and decreased organic acid concentrations in the xylem sap, whereas xylem sap pH was only moderately changed. The citrate to Fe ratios decreased markedly after implants, therefore improving the possibility that Fe could be reduced by the leaf plasma membrane enzyme reductase, known to be inhibited by high citrate/Fe ratios. In peach, the effects of the implants could be observed many months post treatment. In pear, some effects were still observed one year after the implants had taken place. Results obtained indicate that solid Fe sulfate implants were capable of significantly changing the chemical composition of the xylem sap in fruit trees.  相似文献

Human populations of Central Asian origin have contributed genetic material to northern European populations. It is likely that migrating humans carried livestock to ensure food and ease transportation. Thus, eastern genes could also have dispersed to northern European livestock populations. Using microsatellite data, we here report that the essentially different genetic distances DA and (deltamu)2 and their corresponding phylogenetic trees show close associations between the Mongolian native horse and northern European horse breeds. The genetic distances between the northern European breeds and Standardbred/Thoroughbred, representing a southern-derived source of horses, were notably larger. We suggest that contribution of genetic material from eastern horses to northern European populations is likely to have occurred.  相似文献

The insecticidal toxin encoded by the cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis was released in root exudates from transgenic Bt corn during 40 days of growth in soil amended to 0, 3, 6, 9, or 12% (v/v) with montmorillonite or kaolinite in a plant growth room and from plants grown to maturity in the field. The presence of the toxin in rhizosphere soil was determined by immunological and larvicidal assays. No toxin was detected in any soils from isogenic non-Bt corn or without plants. Persistence of the toxin was apparently the result of its binding on surface-active particles in the soils, which reduced the biodegradation of the toxin. The release of the toxin could enhance the control of insect pests or constitute a hazard to nontarget organisms, including the microbiota of soil, and increase the selection of toxin-resistant target insects.  相似文献

In this paper we estimate the European potential for carbon mitigation of no-till farming using results from European tillage experiments. Our calculations suggest some potential in terms of (a) reduced agricultural fossil fuel emissions, and (b) increased soil carbon sequestration. We estimate that 100% conversion to no-till farming would be likely to sequester about 23 Tg C y–1 in the European Union or about 43 Tg C y–1 in the wider Europe (excluding the former Soviet Union). In addition, up to 3.2 Tg C y–1 could be saved in agricultural fossil fuel emissions. Compared to estimates of the potential for carbon sequestration of other carbon mitigation options, no-till agriculture shows nearly twice the potential of scenarios whereby soils are amended with organic materials. Our calculations suggest that 100% conversion to no-till agriculture in Europe could mitigate all fossil fuel-carbon emissions from agriculture in Europe. However, this is equivalent to only about 4.1% of total anthropogenic CO2-carbon produced annually in Europe (excluding the former Soviet Union) which in turn is equivalent to about 0.8% of global annual anthropogenic CO2-carbon emissions.  相似文献
