Soilborne pathogens, especially Fusarium oxysporum , are responsible for damping-off and root necrosis in Eucalyptus nurseries. New technologies are increasingly considering strategies for plant disease control other than chemical fungicides. Among these, natural fungal antagonists, which are colonizers of the root cortex, are potential biocontrol agents. An in vitro system was used: (1) to test the pathogenic effects of F. oxysporum strain Foeu1 which was recovered from a forest nursery soil; (2) to explore the potential of the nonpathogenic F. oxysporum strain Fo47, which is known for its efficiency in biological control, to suppress damping-off of Eucalyptus seedlings; (3) to compare the patterns of root colonization and host response to invasion by the two Fusarium strains inoculated separately in a time-course study. Root inoculation of E. viminalis with F. oxysporum strain Foeu1 caused damping-off in young seedlings in vitro , whilst disease symptoms were not visible in plants inoculated with F. oxysporum strain Fo47 or when both strains (Foeu1 + Fo47) were inoculated simultaneously. Each strain showed similarities in patterns of root tissue colonization, and in the processes of root penetration and initial colonization. Differential effects on root tissue were observed with fungal development within the cortex: ingress of strain Foeu1 was accompanied by severe host-cell alterations whilst no tissue damage occurred with development of strain Fo47.  相似文献

Summary Isolated trees and small patches of trees – paddock trees – are a prominent feature of agricultural landscapes in Australia, but are declining in many areas due to natural senescence, clearing, dieback and the general absence of recruitment. We assessed the importance of paddock trees for woodland conservation in a 30 000 ha sample of the New South Wales (NSW) South‐west Slopes using Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT) panchromatic satellite imagery combined with models predicting the original distribution of vegetation communities. Tree‐cover occurred over 12% of the study area. The patch‐size distribution of vegetation in the study area varied between woodland types. For woodland communities that were confined to hills and ridges, most tree‐cover occurred as few, large remnants. For woodland communities of the foothills and plains (Blakely's Red Gum, Eucalyptus blakelyi and Yellow Box, Eucalyptus melliodora, or White Box, Eucalyptus albens and Red Stringybark), 54% of remnant tree‐cover occurred as patches < 1 ha. The loss of paddock trees will cause substantial reductions to some woodland communities. For example, the loss of patches < 1 ha in woodlands dominated by Blakely's Red Gum and Yellow Box would reduce this association from 7.4% to 3.4% of its predicted pre‐1750 distribution. Mean distance to tree‐cover across the study area increased almost fourfold if patches < 1 ha were removed from the landscape, which may have consequences for movements of some flora and fauna. Failure to protect and perpetuate paddock trees will diminish the likelihood of achieving the conservation objectives of comprehensiveness, adequacy and representativeness in agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

Seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora, were grown in open-top chambers fumigated with ambient and elevated [CO2], and were divided into two populations using 10% light transmittance screens. The aim was to separate the effects of timing of light interception, temperature and [CO2] on plant growth. The orientation of the screens exposed plants to a similar total irradiance, but incident during either cold mornings (east-facing) or warm afternoons (west-facing). Following the first autumn freezing event elevated CO2-grown plants had 10 times more necrotic leaf area than ambient CO2 plants. West-facing plants had significantly greater (25% more) leaf damage and lower photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) in comparison with east-facing plants. Following a late spring freezing event east-facing elevated CO2 plants suffered a greater sustained loss in Fv/Fm than west-facing elevated CO2- and ambient CO2-grown plants. Stomatal conductance was lower under elevated CO2 than ambient CO2 except during late spring, with the highest leaf temperatures occurring in west-facing plants under elevated CO2. These higher leaf temperatures apparently interfered with cold acclimation thereby enhancing frost damage and reducing the ability to take advantage of optimal growing conditions under elevated CO2.  相似文献

Large body size confers a reproductive advantage to adults of the wood‐boring beetle Phoracantha semipunctata (F.) (Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae: Phoracanthini). Larvae of this species feed subcortically in stressed and dying eucalypt trees and logs. We evaluated the influence of the larval environment on larval performance and adult body size by manipulating the post‐felling age of host logs (from freshly cut to 2‐weeks‐old) and the density of colonizing neonates (low density with minimal competition for resources vs. high density with intense competition). Adult beetles emerged in greater numbers from logs that had been subjected to the aging treatment which reduced bark moisture content and favored colonization by neonates. Survival was greatest in larger logs having lower densities of neonates, but was greatly diminished in all treatments by mortality during pupation. Development time varied from 2 months to more than a year and was shortest in smaller logs having high densities of larvae. The size of adult beetles emerging from a log was not influenced by larval density, but was positively correlated with the age of logs when the neonates colonized, and log size. These findings suggest that the optimal developmental conditions for P. semipunctata larvae, in terms of larval performance and adult body size, are available in large, aged host logs having low densities of larvae. Manipulation of the larval environment in this study resulted in a considerable variation in adult body size, but large individuals were relatively more common in the wild population that was the source of neonates for the experiment. Potential body size may have been constrained by our use of only one host species and a narrow range of log dimensions.  相似文献

Spontaneous bleeding of sugar-rich sap from cambial-deep incisions in the bark of trunks was demonstrated for Eucalyptus globulus and other eucalypts across a range of localities and seasonal conditions in south-west Australia. High levels of sucrose and raffinose (up to 31% w/v total sugars) were present in the exudates, and upward and downward gradients in exudate sugar concentrations were recorded between samples obtained at different heights up trunks of E. globulus. The data indicated a phloem origin for the exudates, with source:sink pressure gradients driving translocation. Concentration ratios of sugars to amino acids were consistently lower in exudate from upper (distal) than basal regions of trunks, suggesting preferential partitioning of nitrogen upwards towards the trunk apex. A comparison of phloem and xylem sap composition from one plantation over a season showed nitrate in xylem but not phloem and substantial amounts of sodium, and high concentrations of chloride and sulphate relative to phosphate in xylem and phloem. Phloem sap sampled across a range of 29 contrasting plantations of E. globulus at peak stress (autumn) showed great inter-site variability in concentrations of amino acids, sulphur, sodium and certain trace elements and in C:N and Na:K ratios of sap. Carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) were strongly correlated with sugar concentrations of the sap samples from these and other plantations. Use of sap compositional attributes of phloem and δ13C values of translocated carbon is suggested for assessing the current nutritional condition and water status of E. globulus plantings. Variation in carbon isotope composition (δ13C), water-use efficiency (WUE) and biomass productivity were compared among three populations of Eucalyptus microtheca F. Muell. in a greenhouse. Seedlings were maintained under one well-watered (Control, keeping the soil at field capacity) and two different water deficit conditions (Drought stress I, keeping the same soil water content; Drought stress II, keeping the same soil water supply). In each treatment, significant population differences in δ13C, WUE, and dry matter accumulation and allocation were detected. A negative correlation between WUE and biomass productivity was detected under control and drought stress I, but a positive correlation under drought stress II. The results suggested that there were different water-use strategies among the populations, the southeastern population with lower WUE may employ a prodigal water-use strategy, whereas the northwestern and central populations with higher WUE may employ a conservative water-use strategy. This knowledge may be useful as criteria for genotype selection within a breeding program for this species. In a sand culture experiment we investigated the effects of boron (0.01, 0.19, 0.46 and 0.93 mol m−3 B, as H3BO3), sodium chloride (0, 100 and 200 mol m−3 NaCl) and combined B and NaCl, over 36 days, on growth, water use and foliar ion concentrations of nine week-old seedlings of three fast-growing, commercial eucalypts ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. , E. globulus Labill. ssp. globulus and E. grandis W.Hill.). Shoot dry weight was significantly reduced by high concentrations of NaCl (p < 0.001) and by B and NaCl in combination (p ≤ 0.05) but not by B alone. Root dry weight was significantly reduced by both NaCl (p < 0.001) and B (p < 0.001), but not by combined B and NaCl. Foliar B concentrations increased with higher concentrations of applied B and decreased with higher NaCl concentrations. Foliar Na concentrations were greater with higher NaCl concentrations, whereas B application had no significant effect on foliar Na concentrations. All three species accumulated relatively high B concentrations in leaves. Severe boron toxicity symptoms (BTS) were apparent only when leaf B concentrations exceeded 50 mol x 10−6 g−1, but even at these high concentrations plant growth was only slightly reduced. E. camaldulensis showed least development of BTS, the lowest leaf B concentrations and least reduction in height growth due to B and NaCl. The results suggest that there was a correlation between both B tolerance and B accumulation in leaves and between tolerance to B and NaCl.  The species richness of putative ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi fruiting in blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) plantations in Western Australia was investigated in relation to plantation age. Eleven plantations, 1–8 years old, were selected for study and two native Eucalyptus forest sites in the same region were chosen for comparison. Sporocarps of 44 species of putative EM fungi were collected from the 13 sites. Of these, 30 species were found in blue gum plantations. The number of fungal species was highly positively correlated with plantation age and inversely correlated with soil pH. Young plantations (1–5 years) had 2–9 fungal species and were overwhelmingly dominated by species of Laccaria and Scleroderma. In older plantations (6–8 years), the relative abundance of sporocarps of each species within the fungal community decreased, accompanied by an increase in the number of fungal species (12–17 per site). A brief survey of the two native eucalypt forests in this region revealed a much higher number of fungal species than that observed in plantations. In plantations, species of Descolea, Laccaria, Pisolithus and Scleroderma typically fruited in young plantations. Species of epigeous fungi of the genera Boletus, Cortinarius, Hydnum, Inocybe, Lactarius, Paxillus, Russula and hypogeous fungi, including species of Descomyces, Hysterangium and Mesophellia, were found only in older plantations, or in native forests. Some of the fungi that fruit in young plantations are now being evaluated for use in commercial spore inoculation programs to increase the species diversity of EM fungi in exotic eucalypt plantations. Chloroplast DNA evidence for reticulate evolution in Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Four highly differentiated chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) lineages were identified in the forest tree species Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (Myrtaceae) in Australia using restriction site polymorphisms from Southern analysis. The cpDNA variation did not conform with ssp. boundaries, yet there was a strong geographical pattern to the distribution of the lineages. One lineage (C) was geographically central and widespread, whereas the other three lineages were found in peripheral populations: Western (W), Northern (N) and Southern (S). Thirteen haplotypes were detected in E. globulus , seven of which belonged to clade C. At least three of the cpDNA lineages (C, N and S) were shared extensively with other species. On the east coast of the island of Tasmania, there was a major north–south difference in cpDNA in the virtually continuous distribution of E. globulus . Northern populations harboured haplotypes from clade C while southeastern populations harboured a single haplotype from clade S. This difference was also reflected in several co-occurring endemic species. It is argued that the extensive cpDNA differentiation within E. globulus is likely to originate from interspecific hybridization and 'chloroplast capture' from different species in different parts of its range. Superficially, this hybridization is not evident in taxonomic traits; however, large-scale common garden experiments have revealed a steep cline in quantitative genetic variation that coincides with the haplotype transition in Tasmania. Our cpDNA results provide the strongest evidence to date that hybridization has had a widespread impact on a eucalypt species and indicate that reticulate evolution may be occurring on an unappreciated scale in Eucalyptus .  相似文献

Wood anatomy of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. under different habitats was comparatively studied under light and scanning electron microscope. According to the eleven major quantitative perimeters of wood characteristics of E. globulus viz: vessel frequency, percentage of solitary vessels, vessel diameter, vessel member length; tracheid length and diameter; fibre tracheid length and diameter; libriform fibre length; ray frequency and ray height, the plants under different habitats have been made a comparison. The results showed that growth ring was indistinct, and there was a positive correlation between the quantitative characters of most wood constituent members were positively correlated with the latitude except for some of vessel frequency decreased. The decrease in effects of annual rainfall on the structure of the wood of E. glotrulus were evaluated.  相似文献
