The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine the relative abundance of sauger Sander canadensis and walleye S. vitreus within the Rainy River using a standardized index netting technique; (2) assess the life-history characteristics of the two species in a northern river; (3) examine the spatial distribution of the two species; (4) assess year-class synchrony. At a larger scale, relative abundance of S. canadensis and S. vitreus were similar among sections of the river. However, at a finer scale, S. canadensis were the dominant species over more area (24%) of the river than S. vitreus (12%). Life-history traits for both species were within the range reported for North American. Mortality rates were similar, suggesting that anglers were not affecting one species more than the other. Year-class strengths were not synchronous between S. canadensis and S. vitreus (r = 0.07). There was evidence of S. canadensis potentially outcompeting S. vitreus with a strong year class of S. canadensis followed by a very weak class of S. vitreus. Additionally, S. canadensis were larger than S. vitreus in most sections of the river when adjusted for mean size. However, the potential interspecific competition was not to the exclusion of S. vitreus. Turbidity was probably the factor that enable S. canadensis to survive sympatrically with S. vitreus given their inability to segregate by depth within the river.  相似文献

对入侵植物加拿大一枝黄花(Solidago canadensis L.)和同属土著种一枝黄花(Solidago decurrens Lour.)的染色体计数,并对核型进行了分析.实验结果:加拿大一枝黄花染色体数目为2n=54,核型公式为k(2n)=6x=54=46m 8sm(0-6SAT),核型类型为2A型;一枝黄花染色体数目为2n=18,核型公式为k(2n)=2x=18=16m 2sm(0-2SAT),核型类型为1A型.通过对一枝黄花属(Solidago L.)植物染色体数目的统计分析,判断该属的染色体基数为9.通过对多倍体基因表达导致植物适应进化的讨论得出:多倍体是入侵植物特征,可能是植物入侵的内在机制.  相似文献

Experimental analysis of biparental inbreeding in a self-fertilizing plant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Abstract.— Localized dispersal and mating may genetically structure plant populations, resulting in matings among related individuals. This biparental inbreeding has significant consequences for the evolution of mating systems, yet is difficult to estimate in natural populations. We estimated biparental inbreeding in two populations of the largely self-fertilizing plant Aquilegia canadensis using standard inference as well as a novel experiment comparing apparent selfing between plants that were randomly relocated within populations to experimental control plants. Using two allozyme markers, biparental inbreeding ( b ) inferred from the difference between single-locus and multilocus estimates of selfing ( b = ss – sm ) was low. Less than 3% of matings involved close relatives (mean b = 0.029). In contrast, randomly relocating plants greatly reduced apparent selfing (mean ss = 0.674) compared to control plants that had been dug up and replanted in their original locations ( ss = 0.953, P = 0.002). Based on this difference in ss , we estimated that approximately 30% of all matings involved close relatives (mean b = 0.279, 95% CL = 0.072–0.428). Inference from ss – sm underestimated b in these populations by more than an order of magnitude. Biparental inbreeding is thought to influence the evolution of self-fertilization primarily through reducing the genetic cost of outcrossing. This is unlikely to be of much significance in A. canadensis because inbreeding depression (a major cost of selfing) is much stronger than the cost of outcrossing. However, biparental inbreeding combined with strong inbreeding depression may influence selection on dispersal.  相似文献

Studies following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska indicated that river otters (Lontra canadensis) from oiled regions displayed symptoms of degraded health, including reduced body weight. We examined the fate of ingested oil in the digestive tract and its effects on gut function in captive river otters. Fifteen wild-caught males were assigned to three groups, two of which were given weathered crude oil in food (i.e., control, 5 ppm day−1, and 50 ppm day−1) under controlled conditions at the Alaska Sealife Center. Using glass beads as non-specific digesta markers and stable isotope analysis, we determined the effects of ingested oil on retention time and nutrient uptake. Our data indicated that oil ingestion reduced marker retention time when we controlled for activity and meal size. Fecal isotope ratios suggested that absorption of lipids in the oiled otters might have been affected by reduced retention time of food. In addition, a dilution model indicated that as much as 80% of ingested oil was not absorbed in high-dose animals. Thus, while the ingestion of large quantities of weathered crude oil appears to reduce absorption of oil hydrocarbons and may alleviate systemic effects, it may concurrently affect body condition by impacting digestive function. Dichogamy is very common in flowering plants and is widely thought to reduce pollen-pistil interference, especially self-pollination. Yet, the functional significance of dichogamy has rarely been studied. We investigated the nature and functioning of dichogamy in eastern Ontario populations of Aquilegia canadensis, a highly selfing columbine previously described as protogynous. We then manipulated flowers to determine whether increased protogyny would reduce self-fertilization. Contrary to previous reports, A. canadensis is not dichogamous. Controlled pollinations in a greenhouse showed that pollen tubes generally begin to develop after anther dehiscence. Although stigmas can collect pollen early in floral development, naturally pollinated flowers collected from four populations had few pollen grains on stigmas and almost no pollen tubes in styles until after anther dehiscence. Limited pollen deposition before anther dehiscence was also associated with low nectar availability and limited sepal expansion. Because inbreeding depression is strong in this species, selection may favor increased protogyny if it reduces selfing. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the level of selfing in flowers rendered protogynous by the removal of the first 19 (of 39) anthers to develop, with nonprotogynous control flowers. Contrary to expectations, protogyny did not reduce selfing. Our results emphasize the importance of detailed field observations and manipulative experiments in understanding the nature and functional significance of dichogamy.  相似文献

本文首次报道了杨白织潜蛾LeucopterasusinellaHerrich-Schaffer在贵州的发生危害情况,详细记述了杨白纹潜蛾各虫态的形态特征和生物学特性。在贵阳和铜仁地区,杨树受害株率达95%~100%,受害叶率达75%以上,受害叶每叶虫数3.6米以上,株虫口密度84.8头以上。该虫在铜仁地区1年发生5代,越冬代9月上旬化蛹,翌年4月上旬羽化。成虫寿命4~8天。卵块产于叶片正面贴近主脉或主侧脉处,卵历期2~5天,每卵块平均16卵粒。幼虫孵化时从卵壳底部咬孔潜入叶片组织取食叶肉,历期8~20天,幼虫老熟后咬破上表皮钻出,在被害叶片背面或吐丝下垂至下部叶片的叶背或下部主干与分技交界处的树皮裂缝中织“H”形茧化蛹。第一至第四代蛹历期为8~11天。本文还提出了该虫的防治方法。  相似文献

The genetic structure of remaining black poplar ( Populus nigra ) trees on the banks of the Dutch Rhine branches was investigated using the AFLP technique. In total, 143 trees, including one P. deltoides and some P. x euramericana , were analysed using six AFLP primer combinations which generated 319 polymorphic bands. The AFLP patterns showed that some of the trees sampled as P. nigra were clearly different. These deviating patterns were also observed for the P. deltoides tree and all trees already identified as hybrid P. x euramericana . Hybrids between the two species are morphologically sometimes difficult to distinguish from the species itself. Two important possible source populations for recolonization of the riverbanks of the river Rhine, consisting of mature flowering P. nigra trees, appeared to consist of only a few genotypes each. In contrast, young black poplar trees growing alone or in small groups downstream of the possible source populations appeared to be predominantly generatively derived because no clones of mature trees were found among them. Therefore vegetative propagation seems a very local strategy whereas colonization of new areas appears to occur through generative propagation. Whether the genetic diversity within these black poplars is sufficient for recolonization of river banks and survival of the metapopulation is a question for further research.  相似文献

We present a marginal value model explaining intraspecific andinterspecific variation of mating systems in nonterritorialungulates. The model takes into account the simultaneous effectsof spatial and temporal distribution of females, female groupsize, male-male competition, female choice, and the operationalsex ratio (i.e., the proportion of estrous females). The modelpredicts that higher numbers of females per group increasesthe average exploitation time of such groups by males. An increasein female group density, operational sex ratio, and age-specificfighting success of males are predicted to reduce the averageexploitation time of female groups, leading to roving of males(i.e., moving between female groups). In contrast, an increasein die female rejection rate of males and in the time spentby males on nonmating activities (i. e., foraging, lying down,ruminating, migrating) are predicted to increase the averageexploitation time of female groups and to favor staying behaviorof males (i.e., defending a female group over a longer periodof time). Consequently, die model predicts that young maleswill tend to be "stayers," whereas middle-aged and old malesare expected to be "rovers." Model predictions were tested widifield data collected on muskoxen Ovibos moschatus in a naturalpopulation in west Greenland. Observed correlations betweenbull exploitation times of cow groups and the six above-mentionedsocial and environmental parameters were all in die predicteddirection and statistically significant in five of die six cases.Overall, 69% of die observed variation in exploitation timeof cow groups by males was explained by die model predictions.Stepwise regression suggested that, of die six parameters, variationin sex ratio (R2 = .56) and time spent on nonmating activities(R2 = .35) had the largest effects on male exploitation time.Also, die observed age-specific variation in bull exploitationtime of cow groups was as predicted.  相似文献

The deduced amino acid sequences of antifreeze proteins (AFPs) from larvae of the beetle Dendroides canadensis were determined from both complementary DNAs (cDNAs) and from peptide sequencing. These consisted of proteins with a 25-residue signal peptide and mature proteins 83 (Dendroides antifreeze protein; DAFP-1) or 84 (DAFP-2) amino acids in length which differed at only two positions. Peptide sequencing yielded sequences which overlapped exactly with those of the deduced cDNA sequences of DAFP-1 and DAFP-2, while the partial sequence of another AFP (DAFP-3) matched 21 of 28 residues. Seven 12- or 13-mer repeating units are present in these antifreeze proteins with a consensus sequence consisting of: Cys-Thr-X3-Ser-X5-X6-Cys-X8-X9-Ala-X11-Thr-X13, where X3 and X11 tend toward charged residues, X5 tends toward threonine or serine, X6 toward asparagine or aspartate, X9 toward asparagine or lysine, and X13 toward alanine in the 13-mers. The most interesting feature of these proteins is that throughout the length of the mature antifreeze proteins every sixth residue is a cysteine. These sequences are not similar to any of the known fish AFPs, but they are similar to AFPs from the beetle Tenebrio molitor. Accepted: 14 November 1997  相似文献

ABSTRACT Management of Pacific Flyway Canada geese (Branta canadensis) requires information on winter distribution of different populations. Recoveries of tarsus bands from Vancouver Canada geese (B. canadensis fulva) marked in southeast Alaska, USA, ≥4 decades ago suggested that ≥83% of the population was non-migratory and that annual adult survival was high (Ŝ = 0.836). However, recovery distribution of tarsus bands was potentially biased due to geographic differences in harvest intensity in the Pacific Flyway. Also, winter distribution of Vancouver Canada geese could have shifted since the 1960s, as has occurred for some other populations of Canada geese. Because winter distribution and annual survival of this population had not recently been evaluated, we surgically implanted very high frequency radiotransmitters in 166 adult female Canada geese in southeast Alaska. We captured Vancouver Canada geese during molt at 2 sites where adults with goslings were present (breeding areas) and 2 sites where we observed nonbreeding birds only. During winter radiotracking flights in southeast Alaska, we detected 98% of 85 females marked at breeding areas and 83% of 70 females marked at nonbreeding sites, excluding 11 females that died prior to the onset of winter radiotracking. We detected no radiomarked females in coastal British Columbia, or western Washington and Oregon, USA. Most (70%) females moved ≤30 km between November and March. Our model-averaged estimate of annual survival (Ŝ = 0.844, SE = 0.050) was similar to the estimate of annual survival of geese marked from 1956 to 1960. Likely <2% of Vancouver Canada geese that nest in southeast Alaska migrate to winter areas in Oregon or Washington where they could intermix with Canada geese from other populations in the Pacific Flyway. Because annual survival of adult Vancouver Canada geese was high and showed evidence of long-term consistency, managers should examine how reproductive success and recruitment may affect the population.  相似文献
