A hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, was found to be heavily infested with larval and nymphal Ixodes ricinus in a forest park in Co. Galway, Ireland. A large proportion of the ticks that engorged and detached were infected with the spirochacte, Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of human Lyme borreliosis. The identity of these spirochaetes was confirmed by immunofluorescent assay with B. burgdorferi-specific monoclonal antibody and by polymerase chain reaction test and they were transmitted from the hedgehog to laboratory-reared ticks and from the ticks obtained from the hedgehog to gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The high infection rate of the larvae that fed on the hedgehog in comparison with unfed larvae from the same habitat was interpreted as strong evidence that this host species is reservoir competent. Since hedgehogs can evidently feed adult ticks as well as many immature stages, they may well have an important role in the ecology of Lyme borreliosis in some habitats.  相似文献

本文对刺猬在冬眠过程中褐色脂肪(BAT)的相对重量、超微结构和非颤抖性产热(NST)的变化进行了测定,探讨了BAT产热在热在冬眠刺猬醒眠过程中的作用。结果表明,夏季(7月份)刺猬的BAT相对重量最低,为0.23%。秋季迅速增加,至入眠前达到最高,为0、46%。冬眠期中缓慢减少,冬眠后显著下降(0.32%),这与醒眠时需要快速产热密切相关。冬眠前和冬眠中刺猬的BTA脂滴和线粒体嵴数量明显高于冬眠后,  相似文献

Body temperature and oxygen consumption were measured in the eastern hedgehog,Erinaceus concolor Martin 1838, during summer at ambient temperatures (T a) between-6.0 and 35.6°C.E. concolor has a relatively low basal metabolic rate (0.422 ml O2·g-1·h-1), amounting to 80% of that predicted from its body mass (822.7 g). Between 26.5 and 1.2°C, the resting metabolic rate increases with decreasing ambient temperature according to the equation: RMR=1.980-0.057T a. The minimal heat transfer coefficient (0.057 ml O2·g-1·h-1·°C-1) is higher than expected in other eutherian mammals, which may result from partial conversion of hair into spines. At lower ambient temperature (from-4.6 to-6.0° C) there is a drop in body temperature (from 35.2 to 31.4° C) and a decrease in oxygen consumption (1.530 ml O2·g-1·h-1) even though the potential thermoregulation capabilities of this species are significantly higher. This is evidenced by the high maximum noradrenaline-induced non-shivering thermogenesis (2.370 ml O2·g-1·h-1), amounting to 124% of the value predicted. 本文采用Ag-Hb(血红蛋白)饱和法,Cd-Hb饱和法、Cu-Hb饱和法及酶联吸附免疫法定量分析刺猬各组织器官中金属硫蛋白含量。结果表明,肌肉注射三种金属盐均有明显的诱导金属硫蛋白合成的作用,诱导强度为Cd^2+>Zn^2+>Cu^2+,诱导后金属硫蛋白含量分布规律一致,即肝>肾>睾丸>脾>心、肺、胃、膀胱、胆汁、大肠、小肠、肌肉、血液,其中镉诱导肝的金属硫蛋白含量每克湿组织约1.84mg,为肾的  相似文献

European hedgehog populations belonging to Erinaceus europaeus and E . concolor have been investigated by mitochondrial DNA analysis. A 383 bp fragment of the cytochrome b gene has been sequenced and maximum parsimony and neighbour-joining trees of Tamura–Nei genetic distance values have been constructed. Similar topologies have been produced by both methods, showing a deep divergence between E . europaeus and E . concolor and a further subdivision of each species into a western and an eastern clade. A comparison with previously published allozyme data is made, and concordant and discordant patterns are discussed. The influence of Pleistocene glaciations on the observed pattern of divergence is inferred.  相似文献

Changes in land use patterns and vegetation can trigger ecological change in occupancy and community composition. Among the potential ecological consequences of land use change is altered susceptibility to occupancy by invasive species. We investigated the responses of three introduced mammals (red deer, Cervus elaphus; wild boar, Sus scrofa; and European hare, Lepus europaeus) to replacement of native vegetation by exotic pine plantations in the Patagonian forest‐steppe ecotone using camera‐trap surveys (8633 trap‐days). We used logistic regression models to relate species presence with habitat variables at stand and landscape scales. Red deer and wild boar used pine plantations significantly more frequently than native vegetation. In contrast, occurrence of European hares did not differ between pine plantations and native vegetation, although hares were recorded more frequently in firebreaks than in plantations or native vegetation. Presence of red deer and wild boar was positively associated with cover of pine plantations at the landscape scale, and negatively associated with mid‐storey cover and diversity at the stand scale. European hares preferred sites with low arboreal and mid‐storey cover. Our results suggest that pine plantations promote increased abundances of invasive species whose original distributions are associated with woodlands (red deer and wild boar), and could act as source or pathways for invasive species to new areas.  相似文献

Abstract. Question: How does changing resource availability induced by fertilization and defoliation affect seedling establishment and mycorrhizal symbiosis in a subarctic meadow? Location: 610 m a.s.l., Kilpisjärvi (69°03’N, 20°50’E), Finland. Methods: A short‐term full‐factorial experiment was established, with fertilization and defoliation of natural established vegetation as treatments. Seeds of two perennial herbs Solidago virgaurea and Gnaphalium norvegicum were sown in natural vegetation and their germination and growth followed. At the final harvest we measured the response in terms of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization, biomass and nitrogen concentration of the seedlings and the established vegetation. Results: Germination rate was negatively affected by defoliation in the unfertilized plots. The shoot biomass of S. virgaurea seedlings was reduced by the defoliation and fertilization treatments, but not affected by their interaction. In G. norvegicum, the germination rate and the seedling shoot biomass were negatively correlated with moss biomass in the plots. In the established plants the arbuscular colonization rate was low and defoliation and fertilization treatments either increased or did not affect the colonization by AM fungi. In the seedlings, the colonization rate by AM fungi was high, but it was not affected by treatments. Both seedlings and established plants were colonized by dark septate fungi. Conclusions: Reduction of plant biomass by herbivores can have different effects on seedling growth in areas of high and low soil nutrient availability. The weak response of AM colonization to defoliation and fertilization suggests that AM symbiosis is not affected by altering plant resource availability under the conditions employed in this study.  相似文献

Abstract To determine the effects of sward height and gap size on the emergence and subsequent development of Trollius europaeus, seeds were introduced into artificially created gaps in mown and unmown wet meadow grassland in Ayr, Scotland. Emergence and establishment of nondormant seed (previously leached in running tap water and soaked in gibberellic acid) placed in a range of circular gaps (25 mm, 50 mm with and without root barrier, 100 and 200 mm diameter) were monitored over 305 days. Trollius demonstrated high field emergence (mean, 46% of viable seed sown) in this experiment. Emergence was not significantly affected by either sward height or gap size, although emergence was greater in mown swards. The critical factor determining subsequent survival of seedlings was slug predation rather than sward height or gap size. However, losses due to slug predation were significantly greater in unmown swards, resulting in more seedlings in mown swards. One hundred eleven days after sowing (September) seedling numbers had declined substantially in both unmown and mown swards, and by day 305 (April) seedlings were extinct in both sward types. The implications of the research for the restoration and management of T. europaeus are discussed.  相似文献

Previously we showed that dormancy break of spindle tree embryos after gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment was followed by an increase in arginine decarboxylase (ADC) activity (Béranger-Novat N. et al., Plant Sc. 102: 139–145, 1994). These results indicated that arginine decarboxylase pathway mediate hormone-induced growth responses in spindle tree embryos. In the present investigation we show that in GA3-treated embryos diamine oxidase (DAO) increases immediately after putrescine content and the increase in DAO activity paralleles the accumulation of putrescine at the beginning of the culture (before the visible appearance of the radicle). In this system polyamine oxidase (PAO) increases immediately after DAO activity and follows closely the increase in spermidine content. These results demonstrate a direct correlation between the biosynthesis and oxidation of putrescine and spermidine. At every stage of development DAO and putrescine levels are lower than spermidine and PAO levels. Dormant embryos can be distinguished from GA3-treated embryos by a complete lack of putrescine accumulation. In dormant embryos compared to GA3-treated embryos DAO changed more or less in parallel and on the whole seemed to follow the same content and distribution, but the kinetics of the activation of DAOs were different in dormant embryos with a delay of 1.5 day for the first and 1 day for the second peak. During the first days of culture at least up to 4 days the distribution of spermidine and PAO in GA3-treated embryos followed the same pattern observed in dormant embryos, but the levels of spermidine and PAO were greatly reduced in dormant embryos. On the other hand the kinetics of the activation of PAOs were different in dormant embryos with a delay of 1 day. The results suggest that dormant embryos are deficient in their ability to synthesize polyamines efficiently and support the view that spermidine catabolism (via PAO pool) is limiting in untreated embryos during the first days of culture.  相似文献
