The main purpose of this paper is to attract attention to the fact that a mathematical model of quantitative inheritance can lead to qualitatively different results, if distributions and functions which in the model represent biological processes are assumed to take analytically different (even though qualitatively similar) forms. A simple model of the effect of environmental variation on the post-selection genotypic variance in a population under phenotypic stabilizing selection is considered. It is demonstrated that this model leads to qualitatively different conclusions depending on whether the phenotypic fitness function is assumed in a Gaussian or in a quadratic form.  相似文献

Synopsis Life history variation within the family Embiotocidae is extensive and involves differences in age of first reproduction, fecundity schedules, growth rates, longevity and size of young. Based on maximum reported body lengths, there are three distinct size groups among the family's 23 species. Small species do not exceed 215 mm TL, medium-size species attain 275 to 335 mm TL, and the large species attain 380 to 470 mm TL. The longevity oh surfperches varies from two to ten years, growth is indeterminate, and females of the medium-and large-size groups may delay first reproduction beyond age one. With one exception, all species show increasing length-specific fecundities. The life history characteristics of females differ among the three size groups. Relative to smaller species, the largest species have moderately high fecundity, delayed maturity and long life. Medium-size species have low fecundity, may delay maturity for 1 to 3 years and have intermediate life spans. Small species have generally higher, but variable, fecundity, do not delay maturity, and are short lived. Among the small North American species, the trend in fecundity varies inversely with environmental predictability. Fecundity is highest in the species which occupies highly seasonal freshwater environments. Coastal species produce moderately large broods and species which occupy stable deep water environments produce the smallest broods.  相似文献

Synopsis Results of experimental transfer of rainbow smelt into lakes reclaimed by rotenone around 1960 in Maine were originally interpreted to cast doubt on the previously widely accepted hypothesis that there were two hereditarily different forms of rainbow smelt, one large and one small. Study of more recent data from some of the transplanted populations and reanalysis of the original data suggests different conclusions. The initial effect of introductions into a reclaimed lake may be accelerated and/or more prolonged growth which exceeds even interlake differences. This initial phase, however, is followed by a second phase, when the population reaches equilibrium and these effects subside. Data from phase two of the Little Concord-Shagg and Cold Stream-Coleback Lake transfers showed that the growth characteristics of the transplanted populations returned to those of the parental populations. Large differences in growth patterns were thus found only in the initial phase of the introduction. Meristic characters were little affected by transplanting.Analysis of large specimens derived from a postulated second unofficial introduction into Coleback Lake showed that they also differed significantly, having both higher gill raker and vertebral counts than the smaller smelt. This was of interest as smelt vertebral and gill raker counts usually are inversely related; hence we do not equate these for the moment with the large form of smelt known elsewhere.It is concluded that the initial interpretation of transfer experiments be delayed until conditions approaching equilibrium can be expected to exist. Further, our analysis of more recent lake transfer data has shown nothing to refute the hypothesis that there are at least two hereditarily different forms of smelt.  相似文献

Summary Studies on sample plots inHalimione portulacoides communities show that environmental disturbances, either natural or induced by man, start a sequence of partly overlapping density maxima inSuaeda maritima, Aster tripolium andPuccinellia maritima successively, before the originalHalimione community totally recovers. When succession time before recovering is long enough, there are tendencies in redundancy of this sequence stressing the unilinear character of the succession. Minor environmental impacts induce a longer time-lag period of theSuaeda density maximum, suggesting threshold values of these impacts for the species to maintain minimal population densities or to become locally extinct. This sequence of interim species starting after an environmental disturbance, suggests also a gradient character in various biological attributes, for instance in life-time, propagation, nutrient and genetic plasticity strategies. The mechanism described can therefore be interpreted as a complex of mostly well-adapted and well-integrated inherent species strategies capable of absorbing environmental shocks. It is suggested that in the salt-marsh ccosystem the pattern of spatial variation in densities and that of temporal variation in fluctuations of the three species populations under natural conditions reflect corresponding patterns of environmental disturbances in the vegetation taking into account a timelag associated with the magnitude of the impact concerned.Contribution to the Symposium on Plant species and plant communities held at Nijmegen, 11–12 November 1976, on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Professor Victor Westhoff.Nomenclature follows Heukels-van Ooststroom. 本文根据用标记和非标记氢醌进行的模拟、盆栽和田间定位试验,结合国内外文献有关氢醌的环境常数,论述了氢醌在土壤-植物系统的去向和代谢途径、对土壤酶活性的影响及其环境效应。得出的结论是:作为脲酶抑制剂使用的微量氢醌(0.3—0.4%,与尿素重量比),不会从土壤中淋失和挥发,在土壤和植物中没有累积,对与碳、氮和磷转化有关的土壤酶活性很少影响。在土壤中,它将通过氧化、臭氧化和生物学降解,经由环断裂生成二元酸或参与腐殖物质的合成。在植物体内,主要通过糖苷化得到同化和利用。因此,氢醌作为脲酶抑制剂在农业生产中应用是安全的。  相似文献

Summary Variation in recombination rate is important to plant breeders since a major objective is to obtain favorable recombinants of linked genes. The ability to increase recombination (R) in circumstances in which favorable and unvavorable genes are linked (Corn Belt x exotic populations) and to decrease recombination when many favorable genes are linked (narrow-based, elite populations) would be of immense value. However, the concept of variation in recombination frequencies between linked genes has received limited attention despite its implications in breeding and genetic linkage studies. Molecular techniques have allowed better estimations of this variation. In this study, attempts were made to characterize: (1) the R values in the Pgm1-Adh1 and Adh1-Phi1 adjacent regions of chromosome 1 and the Idh2-Mdh2 region of chromosome 6 in F2 families of three maize (Zea mays L.) populations; (2) the environmental effect on R values of F2s from two populations. One population, NSO, was a Corn Belt synthetic, and the other two populations, CBMEX3 and CBCAR5, were composites from crosses between Corn Belt and exotic germ-plams.Wide ranges of estimated recombination ( ) values were observed among families in each population for all three chromsomal regions. The distribution of values for the Pgm1-Adh1 region showed that the F2 families of each population fell into two broad categories: 0.30–0.50 and 0.02–0.20. No intermediates (0.21–0.29) were found. The distributions were almost normal for the Adh1-Phi1 and the Idh2-Mdh2 regions. It would appear that the major dispersion in the Pgm1-Adh1 region was controlled by the effects of a single gene, while the Adh1-Phi1 and Idh2-Mdh2 regions were only affected by polygenes. No correlation was found between recombination values of the two adjacent regions, indicating that the genes affecting recombination for the Pgm1-Adh1 region may be specific for that region.For the Pgm1-Adh1 region, no differences in values were found among the three populations. For the Adh1-Phi1 region, frequencies of CBMEX3 and NSO were not significantly different, but both had significantly greater values than CBCAR5. For the Idh2-Mdh2 region, CBMEX3 was significantly different from NSO. Synopsis The life history characteristics of tule perch were compared within and among populations in three drainages with substantially different environmental conditions. Within populations there were, in general, substantial increases in brood size, size of young, brood weight, and gonadal-somatic index (GSI) with age and with size of female. In at least one population there was a trade-off between the number and size of young produced. However, in a lake where individual growth was very slow, brood weight, GSI, and other life history characters showed decreasing trends with age. Among populations in isolated drainages, female length at first reproduction and longevity varied directly and mean brood size varied inversely with environmental predictability. Morphological and geological evidence and some comparative litter characteristics suggest that life history differences among populations in isolated drainages are in part genetic.  相似文献

Silver nanoparticles play a significant role in biomedical sciences due to their unique properties allowing for their use as an effective sensing and remediation platform Herein, the green synthesis of silver nanostructures (Ag NSs), prepared via aqueous extract of waste Brassica oleracea leaves in the presence of silver nitrate solution (10-4 M), is reported. The Ag NSs are fully characterized and their efficacy with respect to 4-nitrophenol reduction, glucose sensing, and microbes is determined. Visually, the color of silver nitrate containing solution altered from colorless to yellowish, then reddish grey, confirming the formation of Ag NSs. HRTEM and SEAD studies revealed the Ag NSs to have different morphologies (triangular, rod-shaped, hexagonal, etc., within a size range of 20–40 nm) with face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure. The Ag NSs possess high efficacy for nitrophenol reduction (<11 min and degradation efficiency of 98.2%), glucose sensing (LOD: 5.83 µM), and antimicrobial activity (E. coli and B. subtilis with clearance zones of 18.3 and 14 mm, respectively). Thus, the current study alludes towards the development of a cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient three-in-one platform for biomedical and environmental applications.  相似文献
