The root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.), which represents a global threat to agricultural production, can cause serious losses in both the yield and quality of many crops. Endophytic bacteria are known to have great potential against Meloidogyne incognita. The colonisation ability of endophytic Bacillus cereus BCM2 in tomato roots and its biological control efficacy of M. incognita were investigated. By the end of the growth period of tomato plants, the population of BCM2 in the rhizosphere soils and roots of the tomato were 5.86 and 3.38 log CFU g?1, respectively, indicating that BCM2 can colonise tomato roots for long periods of time. Pre-inoculation with BCM2 resulted in a significant reduction in the population of M. incognita and the gall index of tomato compared to the untreated control, and there was an increase in the tomato yield of 47.4%. Colony counts showed that the population of BCM2 in tomato roots was affected by soil type and pH, and the colonisation of BCM2 in tomato rhizosphere soils was influenced by soil water and organic matter contents. We observed that the biocontrol effects of BCM2 were best when soil pH was 7. Pre-inoculation with BCM2 can inhibit the formation of tomato galls more effectively when soil water content is 25%, and rich organic matter content was conducive to a reduction in the number of M. incognita second stage juveniles (J2s) in soil. These results demonstrated that B. cereus BCM2 has great potential for controlling M. incognita in tomato plants.  相似文献

A fish body condition index was calculated twice for each individual fish, including or excluding parasite mass from fish body mass, and index values were compared to test the effects of parasite mass on measurement of body condition. Potential correlations between parasite load and the two alternative fish condition index values were tested to assess how parasite mass may influence the perception of the actual effects of parasitism on fish body condition. Helminth parasite mass was estimated in common bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus from four New Zealand lakes and used to assess the biasing effects of parasite mass on body condition indices. Results showed that the inclusion or exclusion of parasite mass from fish body mass in index calculations significantly influenced correlation patterns between parasite load and fish body condition indices. When parasite mass was included, there was a positive correlation between parasite load and fish body condition, seemingly indicating that fish in better condition supported higher parasite loads. When parasite mass was excluded, there was no correlation between parasite load and fish body condition, i.e. there was no detectable effect of helminth parasites on fish condition or fish condition on parasite load. Fish body condition tended to be overestimated when parasite mass was not accounted for; results showed a positive correlation between relative parasite mass and the degree to which individual fish condition was overestimated. Regardless of the actual effects of helminth parasites on fish condition, parasite mass contained within a fish should be taken into account when estimating fish condition. Parasite tissues are not host tissues and should not be included in fish mass when calculating a body condition index, especially when looking at potential effects of helminth infections on fish condition.  相似文献

Despite their predominance worldwide, few studies have been conducted to look at the impact of sheep production systems relying on transhumance practices in arid and continental conditions, on farm-level greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Using Turkey as an example, this paper examines on farm-level GHG emissions calculated for two contrasting sheep production systems under arid and continental climate conditions. Production and management data were obtained through face-to-face interviews carried out on 10 transhumance and 15 semi-intensive meat sheep farms in Turkey. A total of seven GHG emission estimates were then calculated for each farm with the Agricultural Resource Efficiency Calculator (AgRECalc©) tool; i) total Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from energy use (kg CO2e), ii) total Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) from methane (kg CO2e), iii) total CO2e from nitrous oxide (kg CO2e), iv) whole farm and enterprise CO2e emissions (kg CO2e), v) net emission from land use (kg CO2e), vi) whole farm CO2e emissions per kg of farm output (kg CO2e/kg output), vii) product CO2e emissions (meat): kg CO2e / kg live weight, and viii) farm output (kg of sheep). Multivariate analyses (using R software) were carried out to compare both farm types and their respective carbon emissions. The total farm output per ewe was lower in the transhumance farms (7.4 kg/ewe) than in the semi-intensive farms (7.7 kg/ewe). The kg CO2e per kg of output was also lower for the transhumance farms (46.2 kg CO2e) than for the semi-intensive ones (56.5 kg CO2e). This trend was similar for the amount of CO2e per kg of live weight produced (20.8 kg and 25.4 kg for the transhumance and the semi-intensive farms, respectively). Despite overall net emissions from land use being greater on average for the transhumance farms, once measured per hectare, they were found to be lower than those for the semi-intensive farms. This study provides a reference point for different sheep production systems’ GHG emission impact in continental rangelands in Turkey.  相似文献

BackgroundThe Environmental Determinants of KSHV transmission in rural Uganda (ENDKU) study began enrollment in February 2020 with the purpose of defining the relationship between malaria, primarily caused by Plasmodium falciparum in sub-Saharan Africa, and KSHV susceptibility and reactivation. Uganda is an ideal study site, because both malaria and KSHV are endemic and widespread, even among young children.MethodsENDKU is a longitudinal cohort study of infants enrolled at six months of age and followed until three years of age. The main study, and one smaller sub-study, is nested within the General Population Cohort (GPC), a long-standing population cohort in rural Uganda. The ENDKU study was created to test the hypothesis that P. falciparum malaria increases an infant’s susceptibility to KSHV infection. A sub-study to evaluate the effects of P. falciparum on KSHV reactivation involves an additional cohort of 5–10-year-old children with and without acute malaria who presented to the GPC study clinic. For each study, participants provided demographic and behavioral data through administered questionnaires and blood and saliva samples.ResultsDespite barriers presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the study team was able to leverage the long-standing relationship of the UK Medical Research Council and the Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) with the community, a strong commitment to research, and a multi-disciplinary team of experts to successfully implement the ENDKU study.ConclusionThe results of this multi-pronged approach will answer important questions about the etiology and transmission of KSHV in sub-Saharan Africa and the data and samples collected will be an important future resource for scientific research in the region.  相似文献

科学分析动物种群增长动态,合理确定环境容量是管控城市半野生动物种群激增危害的根本途径。本文对贵州贵阳黔灵山公园半野生猕猴种群特征、种群增长、环境容纳量以及猴群对公园的危害进行了研究分析。结果表明:(1)较之野生种群,园内栖息种群密度高、猴群大。现有8个稳定猴群共计1067只[最小群:47只;最大群:226只,平均:(133±67)只],总体雌雄性比为1.33;全区种群密度约达251只/km2,但猴群主要栖息于游道及其周边,导致主分布区密度高达 2134只/km2;(2)种群增长迅速、繁殖力旺盛。自1992年以来,种群呈指数型增长(年均增长率为8.08%,增长函数为y=30.6789*exp[(x-1987)/8.7894+ 64.0193),当前种群总体年龄结构为成年猴>青年猴>幼年猴,虽青幼个体数量较成年个体少,但成年雌雄性比达到1.50,性成熟个体较多,有效种群数大,仍保持旺盛的繁殖力;(3)种群Logistic增长曲线(y=792/(1+2.8495E+183*exp-0.2104x)表明园内环境容量(K值)为792只,与该区猕猴伤人事件频率曲线进入高位平台期所对应的种群数量接近。文中还对猴群栖息对当地植物多样性造成的影响进行了调查。调查监测表明,种群过大且集中栖息导致公园内生物多样性破坏、人猴冲突、公共健康隐患等一系列问题产生,建议应通过节育、分流等相关措施,将种群数量控制在K/2即400只左右为宜。本文可为黔灵山公园猕猴保护管理及其他城市野生动物管理提供参考。  相似文献

Depuration or elimination of diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DST) was followed for 73 days in 1- and 2-year-old mussels. The age groups also differed in size, providing a broad approach to studying the effect of the differences in physiology accompanying the differences in size. Content of DST was analysed both on groups and individual mussels. Environmental variables were measured to evaluate their effect on depuration.We found no significant differences in elimination rate of DST between 1- and 2-year-old mussels under natural conditions. This suggests that size and age do not affect the elimination rate of the DST. The present study is the first study on the effect of age and size on the elimination rate of algal toxins in bivalves. The natural variations in food levels and temperature were not found to affect the elimination rate of DST.The digestive gland weights in the 1-year-old mussels increased four times while the DST content per individual decreased eight times. This demonstrated that dilution of toxins due to tissue growth could have an important contribution to declines in toxin concentrations. Changes in tissue mass are affected by environmental variables via growth or starvation, and when such changes lead to concentration or dilution of toxins this does not reflect the accumulation or removal of toxins from the tissues. We hence suggest that when evaluating the actual elimination capacity of the mussels, as in the present study, the total content of toxins per individual should be used, rather than toxin concentrations.The 1-year-old mussels had faster growth compared to the 2-year-old mussels in both total soft tissue and digestive glands. The mechanism of DST elimination is still unknown. If this process involves metabolism of the toxins, one could expect the rates of elimination to follow overall metabolic rates. However, the results from the present study suggest that large differences in growth rates, which also include difference in feeding and metabolic rates, do not affect the elimination rate of DST. Our results support the assumption that the depuration rates cannot be accelerated, even in artificial systems, as a cost-effective way to solve the problem with toxic mussels for the industry.  相似文献

Developing effective, rapid and inexpensive methods for monitoring and conserving aquatic resources is an important issue for environmental managers. This study focuses on Mytilus edulis, a keystone species of many coastal marine communities, which is frequently used as a biomonitor for a range of pollutants. Recent advances in post-genomic technologies have provided new methods of biochemical screening, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) is one such method that could enable bioindicator species to be used for environmental assessment. This paper develops a methodology to apply the FT-IR approach to marine intertidal M. edulis and addresses three methodological issues: First, the optimum physical location for biofluid sampling is examined (i.e. laboratory versus field). Secondly, the effects of transportation of frozen biofluid sampling from either the field-site or laboratory to the analytical facility are considered. Finally, the effect of repeated FT-IR measurements on collected M. edulis haemolymph samples is examined. From these results we suggest sampling haemolymph from M. edulis at the top of the shore prior to immediate snap-freezing in liquid nitrogen. Sample transportation can occur on ice for up to eight hours before storage at −80 °C. FT-IR measurements should occur within three months of collection and samples should not be used or thawed more than twice. We show how this method can be used to differentiate successfully between four different estuarine environments. Ultimately, through addressing these methodological questions, we provide a protocol to allow efficient sampling and FT-IR measurement of M. edulis as collected from the intertidal areas of rocky and muddy shores. We conclude that due to current monitoring needs presented by the European Water Framework Directive such an approach could prove to be an invaluable future tool for assessing coastal water quality.  相似文献

Static tests were employed to assess the acute toxicity of the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of spent automotive lubricating oil (of mixed SAE grades) on Clarias gariepinus, a freshwater fish commonly cultured in Nigeria. Median lethal concentrations (LC50) of the WSF were found to decrease as a function of exposure time from 690+/-21 (after 24 h) to 513+/-58 mg/l (after 96 h). The characteristics of the WSF such as mean acidity (pH 6.6), turbidity (40 NTU), total dissolved solids (TDS; 40 mg/l) and significantly reduced (P<0.05) dissolved-oxygen (DO) values (1.44 mg/l) were not compliant with existing standards set for discharged effluents. The solubility of the detected straight-chain aliphatics ranked as C14>C16>C32>C18>C28; that of the simple aromatics was ortho-xylene>para-xylene; and that of the polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was acenaphthylene>9H-fluorene>naphthalene>anthracene>phenanthrene>chrysene>benzo[k]fluoranthene>benzo[a]pyrene>benzo[b]fluoranthene, most of which being serious carcinogens. These oil constituents and the overall physico-chemical properties of the WSF are expected to act synergistically on the test organism (C. gariepinus), eliciting the quantal responses observed. The toxicity of the WSF points to the base constituent, oxidative degradation, and mechano-chemical reactions associated with aged crankcase oils. These oils, therefore, should definitely no longer be disposed into water streams or landscape, not even at sub-lethal concentrations, because of the inherent toxicity of their soluble fractions and the associated danger of bioaccumulation.  相似文献

Over the past few years, new technologies for nitrogen removal have been developed mainly because of the increasing financial costs of the traditional wastewater treatment technologies. Newly discovered pathways, like the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium (ANAMMOX), and uses for nitrogen removal technologies are under discussion. Processes and technologies such as: Partial nitrification; Single reactor systems for High Ammonium Removal Over Nitrite (SHARON); Anammox; Aerobic/anoxic deammonification; Oxygen Limited Autotrophic Nitrification‐Denitrification (OLAND); Completely Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal Over Nitrite (CANON); wetland based systems, all have a high potential for nitrogen removal. However, the pathways of nitrogen transformation processes are very complex. An understanding of how various environmental factors affect these processes and a sound knowledge of existing, worldwide experience pertaining to these novel technologies are the key if the nitrogen removal rates are to be improved and success is to be realized in full‐scale applications. This review describes the present knowledge of the new treatment technologies for wastewater with high nitrogen loads. Special emphasis is given to the influence of environmental factors and the reactor configuration on the nitrogen transformation process and microbial activity.  相似文献

Despite the fact that flow and channel morphology are two critical factors that need to be taken into account when considering the conservation or restoration of river environments, there are no reports on the response of fish assemblages to changes involving both variables in combination. This study examined the response of fish assemblages to artificially induced changes in flow discharge in an experimental stream that had simple (a glide reach) and complex (pool–riffle reach) morphologies. When the flow of the glide reach was increased, the fish assemblage structure changed from one dominated by the demersal species Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Cobitis sp. to one dominated by the water-column species Zacco platypus and Gnathopogon elongatus. In the pool–riffle reach, the fish assemblage structure changed from one dominated by Cobitis sp. and Z. platypus to one dominated by Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis. When the flow discharge was low, the fish assemblages of both reach types resembled each other in being dominated largely by demersal species, but when flow was increased these similarities faded and distinct assemblages emerged. In the glide reach, increasing the flow volume caused a linear increase in both water depth and velocity and a gradual increase in the diversity of water-column species, their relative abundance, and size. The number of Z. platypus increased fivefold whereas the number of M. anguillicaudatus decreased to less than a quarter of their original number. In the pool–riffle reach, the number of P. altivelis altivelis grew conspicuously although increased flow produced no clear increase in depth or velocity. Calculation of the availability of physical habitat environments suitable for Z. platypus and P. altivelis altivelis in each reach type indicated that preferable habitat for both species was more available in the glide reach. The lower abundance of P. altivelis altivelis in the glide reach was attributed to the relatively low availability of algal food resource due to the sand-predominated substrate whereas pebbles predominated in the pool–riffle reach providing good conditions for algal growth. Our findings suggest the need for a framework for considering environmental flow that takes into account variables such as channel morphology and food resource conditions.  相似文献
