Late-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) usually appears in patients older than 65 years and has clinical features different from the classical form observed in younger patients. In the elderly, SLE represents 10-20% of all SLE cases, shows a different and less aggressive clinical evolution and the first manifestations are non-specific. A significantly higher incidence of late-onset SLE in males, and the fact that postmenopausal women have a more benign disease, suggests that the estrogenic status may influence the activity of the disease. Owing to the insidious onset and the non-specific clinical manifestations on presentation, there is commonly a delayed diagnosis of late-onset SLE. Furthermore, the presence of comorbidities and concomitant therapies in elderly patients may limit the therapeutic options for SLE. The treatment of choice of joint symptoms and serositis includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and low-dose steroids for short periods. In addition to the need for adopting a multidisciplinary approach, it is fundamental to obtain information about the functional, cognitive and social status of these patients in order to make appropriate healthcare decisions.  相似文献

Facilitation, both by inter‐ and intra‐specific neighbours, is known to be an important process in structuring plant communities. However, only a small number of experiments have been reported on facilitation in plant invasions, especially between invasive con‐specific individuals. Here, we focus on how con‐specific neighbours of the invasive alien plant alligator weed affect the tolerance of alligator weed to herbivory by the introduced biological control agent, Agasicles hygrophila. We conducted greenhouse and garden experiments in which invasive plant density and herbivory intensity (artificial clipping and real herbivory) were manipulated. In the greenhouse experiment, artificial clipping significantly reduced plant biomass when plants were grown individually, but when con‐specific neighbours were present in the same pot, biomass was not significantly different from control plants. Similarly, when compared to control plants, plants that were subjected to herbivory by A. hygrophila produced more biomass when grown with two con‐specific neighbours than when grown alone. Real herbivory also resulted in an increased number of vegetative buds, and again when two con‐specific neighbours were present this effect was increased (a 55.3% increase in buds when there was no neighbour, but a 111.6% increase in buds when two con‐specific neighbours were present). In the garden experiment, in which plants were grown at high density (6 plants per pot), alligator weed fully recovered from defoliation caused by insects at levels from 20–30% to 100%. Our results indicate that the con‐specific association may increase the compensatory ability to cope with intense damage in this invasive plant.  相似文献

The growing increase in world population and generalised aging have been accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of cancer in the elderly. Aging is associated with certain physiological changes, some of which are enhanced by the neoplasm itself. Along with this, the elderly oncology patient usually has more problems than the rest of the elderly, and has a multitude of deficits. These characteristics require a special handling of the older patient with cancer, by using the main tool used in Geriatrics, the comprehensive geriatric assessment. This article analyses the importance of the comprehensive geriatric assessment in this population group, paying special attention to its ability to predict the toxicity of chemotherapy and the survival of the elderly oncology, as well as its ability to classify these patients into groups that help in the decision making process.  相似文献

The interplay between metal binding, carbohydrate binding activity, stability and structure of the lectin from Pterocarpus angolensis was investigated. Removal of the metals leads to a more flexible form of the protein with significantly less conformational stability. Crystal structures of this metal-free form show significant structural rearrangements, although some structural features that allow the binding of sugars are retained. We propose that substitution of an asparagine residue at the start of the C-terminal beta-strand of the legume lectin monomer hinders the trans-isomerization of the cis-peptide bond upon demetallization and constitutes an intramolecular switch governing the isomer state of the non-proline bond and ultimately the lectin phenotype.  相似文献

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most frequent recessive inherited diseases in western countries. Advances in medical care have led to a substantial increase in the life expectancy of CF patients. Survival beyond adolescence has permitted to see fungi not only as late colonizers, but also as potential pathogens responsible of allergic reactions and chronic infections related to lung function deterioration. The role of fungi, nevertheless, has been overlooked until recently. As a result, a number of questions on their epidemiology, clinical significance, or diagnosis, among others, remain unanswered. Besides more in depth studies about the extent of the deleterious effect of fungi on the CF host, new technologies may provide the key to understand its pathogenic role, its interaction with other microbial components of the respiratory microbiota, and should pave the way to define subsets of patients at risk who would benefit from specific therapy. This review is intended to provide a quick overview on what we know about the presence of fungi in the CF airway and its repercussion in the host, and to point out some of the many knowledge gaps needed to understand and advance in the management of fungi in the airway of CF subjects.  相似文献

Flash photolysis of rhodopsin in rabbit's retina has been analysed theoretically, and the results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results of Hagins (1957). We have also obtained the variation of relative concentrations of rhodopsin, lumirhodopsin, isorhodopsin and metarhodopsin I during the period of the flash corresponding to two different intensities of the flash. It has been found that the quantum efficiencies of conversion of lumirhodopsin into rhodopsin and isorhodopsin will lie in the range 0.24–0.45 and 0.20–0.44 respectively; quantum efficiencies of conversion of metarhodopsin I into rhodopsin and isorhodopsin are found to have values greater than 0.52 and 0.45 respectively and the quantum efficiency of conversion of isorhodopsin into lumirhodopsin has been found to be approximately 0.865. Also the maximum value of the rate constant of the reaction metarhodopsin Imetarhodopsin II at 37 C has been determined in decerebrated eye and it has been found that it is of the same order as found by Pugh (1975) in the case of human eye.Work partially supported by Department of Science and Technology  相似文献

A high concentration (30 μg/ml or more) of Con A caused the death of not only thymocytes but also splenic cells of BALB/c mice, whereas a moderate concentration (3 μg/ml) of Con A induced proliferation of these cells. A high concentration of Con A also induced the death of splenic cells of athymic BALB/c-nu/nu mice and the bone marrow cells of BALB/c mice which mainly consist of non-T cells. However, any concentration (1-30 μg/ml) of Con A failed to induce the proliferation of these cells. Specific binding of tetrameric Con A to mannose-containing receptors was required for the induction of cell death. DNA fragmentation was observed by both laser flow cytometry and electrophoresis in Con A-stimulated T cells and non-T cells. This indicated that the mechanism of induction of apoptosis with Con A is not necessarily TCR-dependent. Con A induced tyrosine phosphorylation of a number of proteins in various types of cells. Interestingly, phosphorylation of the 40 kDa protein developed only in the thymocytes and spleen cells that contain T cells, whereas phosphorylation of the 80 and 120 kDa proteins appeared in both T cells and non-T cells. These results suggested that the Con A-induced apoptosis of T cells and non-T cells involves different but possibly mutually related protein tyrosine phosphorylation-linked signals.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly population. Currently, there are no effective treatments to prevent or delay the natural course of the disease. Numerous studies have provided information about the molecular processes underlying biological ageing and, perhaps more importantly, potential interventions to slow ageing and promote healthy longevity in laboratory model systems. The main issue addressed in this review is whether an intervention that has anti-ageing properties can alter the appearance and/or progression of Alzheimer's disease, a disease in which age is the biggest risk factor. Different anti-ageing interventions have been shown to prevent (and in some cases possibly restore) several parameters recognised as central symptoms to the development of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, they are taking the first steps towards translating these laboratory discoveries into clinical applications.  相似文献
