Empirical Mode Decomposition and Wavelet Transform Based ECG Data Compression Scheme

ObjectiveIn health-care systems, compression is an essential tool to solve the storage and transmission problems. In this regard, this paper reports a new electrocardiogram (ECG) data compression scheme which employs sifting function based empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and discrete wavelet transform.MethodEMD based on sifting function is utilized to get the first intrinsic mode function (IMF). After EMD, the first IMF and four significant sifting functions are combined together. This combination is free from many irrelevant components of the signal. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) with mother wavelet ‘bior4.4’ is applied to this combination. The transform coefficients obtained after DWT are passed through dead-zone quantization. It discards small transform coefficients lying around zero. Further, integer conversion of coefficients and run-length encoding are utilized to achieve a compressed form of ECG data.ResultsCompression performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using 48 ECG records of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. In the comparison of compression results, it is observed that the proposed method exhibits better performance than many recent ECG compressors. A mean opinion score test is also conducted to evaluate the true quality of the reconstructed ECG signals.ConclusionThe proposed scheme offers better compression performance with preserving the key features of the signal very well.     

Cyclical changes in the fine structure of bovine endometrial gland cells

Summary Cyclical changes in bovine endometrial gland cells were investigated in six heifers, three at estrus and three at day twelve of the estrous cycle in the luteal phase. The epithelium is generally low at estrus but high in the luteal phase. There are ciliated and non-ciliated cells. The ciliated cells are fewer and lighter and show inconspicuous cyclical changes.The secretory cells show more prominent changes. At estrus, their free border is flat with short microvilli. The conspicuous rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum may synthesize protein for later secretion. The Golgi complex seems inactive. The high number of cytosegresomes and dense bodies might express cell regression caused by endocrine changes.In the luteal phase, the cells are lighter with long microvilli. The Golgi apparatus shows vacuoles and immature secretory droplets. Secretory vacuoles with light contents occur in the apical cytoplasm. Some of them appear to discharge their contents into the lumen. This is interpreted as evidence of merocrine secretion. Accumulations of tubular, smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, masses of glycogen granules, and several fat droplets are present.Some lymphocytes and degranulated granulocytes are seen near the basement membrane, more frequently at estrus.Financial support for this study was received from Anslaget för främjande av medicinsk forskning vid Veterinärhögskolan.The authors express their gratitude to Prof. A. 变应性鼻炎舌下特异性免疫治疗前后主客观指标、生活质量改变及疗效影响因素分析

目的:分析舌下特异性免疫治疗变应性鼻炎(AR)临床疗效及其影响因素。方法:以我院2012年1月~2014年1月诊治的100例变应性鼻炎患者为研究对象,均接受舌下特异性免疫治疗,以治疗2年为研究终点,比较治疗前、治疗2年后症状及体征评分、视觉模拟量表(VAS)评分及生活质量变化,评价治疗2年疗效及不良反应,同时对可能影响舌下特异性免疫治疗2年疗效的相关因素行多元线性回归分析。结果:治疗2年总有效率高达72.00%;与治疗前比较,治疗2年后症状及体征积分、VAS评分、鼻结膜炎生存质量调查问卷(RQLQ)中文版各项评分均显著下降,差异有统计学意义(P0.05)。多元线性回归分析显示舌下特异性免疫治疗AR 2年疗效的影响因素为病程、治疗前VAS评分及患者用药依从性。结论:舌下特异性免疫治疗AR疗效明确,不良反应少,能有效缓解患者症状及体征,改善其生活质量。同时其疗效与AR患者病程长、治疗前VAS评分高、用药依从性差有关。     

光电阅读机在大人群现场调查中数据处理及质量控制 的应用

目的:探讨光电阅读机在大样本现场调查项目质量控制和数据录入中的作用.方法:使用光电阅读机读入《子宫颈癌危险因素调查表》信息并进行表格质量评估,核查调查表中调查对象编码缺失、重复及进行读入信息一致性比对.结果:在录入的70160份数据中,调查对象编码缺失率为0.87％,调查对象编码重复率为0.79％,信息一致率为99.47％.3个项目点连续三个月质量控制,表格不合格率略有下降.结论:在大人群现场调查项目中通过光电阅读机进行质量控制及数据录入,能快速准确的将纸质信息转化为电子信息,并对电子信息进行核查,能迅速将调查表评估结果和建议反馈给调查表填写人员,及时指导调查员改进调查项目的编写方法和调查表内容的填写方法,从而提高了调查表信息采集质量,促进项目科研数据真实可信.     

Hsp70 promotes epithelial sodium channel functional expression by increasing its association with coat complex II and its exit from endoplasmic reticulum

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) plays an important role in the homeostasis of blood pressure and of the airway surface liquid, and inappropriate regulation of ENaC results in refractory hypertension (in Liddle syndrome) and impaired mucociliary clearance (in cystic fibrosis). The regulation of ENaC by molecular chaperones, such as the 70-kDa heat shock protein Hsp70, is not completely understood. Building on the previous suggestion by our group that Hsp70 promotes ENaC functional and surface expression in Xenopus oocytes, we investigated the mechanism by which Hsp70 acts upon ENaC in epithelial cells. In Madin-Darby canine kidney cells stably expressing epitope-tagged αβγ-ENaC and with tetracycline-inducible overexpression of Hsp70, treatment with 1 or 2 μg/ml doxycycline increased total Hsp70 expression ~2-fold and ENaC functional expression ~1.4-fold. This increase in ENaC functional expression corresponded to an increase in ENaC expression at the apical surface of the cells and was not present when an ATPase-deficient Hsp70 was similarly overexpressed. The increase in functional expression was not due to a change in the rate at which ENaC was retrieved from the apical membrane. Instead, Hsp70 overexpression increased the association of ENaC with the Sec24D cargo recognition component of coat complex II, which carries protein cargo from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi. These data support the hypothesis that Hsp70 promotes ENaC biogenesis and trafficking to the apical surface of epithelial cells.     

Non-destructive assessment of flesh firmness and dietary antioxidants of greenhouse-grown tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) at different fruit maturity stages

Non-destructive methods have been widely recognized for evaluating fruit quality traits of many horticultural crops and food processing industry. Destructive (analytical) test, and non-destructive evaluation of the quality traits were investigated and compared for ‘Red Rose’ tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruit grown under protected environment. Fresh tomato fruit at five distinctive maturity stages namely; breaker (BK), turning (TG), pink (PK), light-red (LR), and red (RD) were labeled and scanned using the handheld near infra-red (NIR) enhanced spectrometer at a wavelength range of 285–1200 nm. The labeled tomato samples were then measured analytically for flesh firmness, lycopene, β-carotene, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoids content (TFC). The results revealed that quality traits could be estimated using NIR spectroscopy with a relatively high coefficient of determination (R²): 0.834 for total phenolic content, 0.864 for lycopene, 0.790 for total flavonoid content, 0.708 for β-carotene; and 0.679 for flesh firmness. The accumulation of Lyco and β-Car rapidly increased in tomatoes harvested between the TG and the LR maturity stages. Harvesting tomatoes at BK maturity stage resulted in significantly higher flesh firmness than harvesting at the later maturity stages. Tomato fruits had the lowest TPC and TFC contents at the earliest maturity stage (BK), while they had intermediate TPC and TFC levels at LR and RD maturity stages. NIR spectroscopic measurements of fruit firmness and lipophilic antioxidants in tomato fruit at various maturity stages were partially in accordance with those estimated by destructive (analytical) methods. Based on these findings, we recommend using non-destructive NIR spectroscopy as an effective tool for predicting tomato fruit quality during harvest stage and postharvest processing.

High-Level Field Resistance to Bacillus sphaericus C3-41 in Culex quinquefasciatus from Southern China

A flowable mosquito-larvicidal formulation of Bacillus sphaericus strain C3-41 has been continuously used for 8 years to control Culex quinquefasciatus larvae in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, China. This formulation had high efficacy against the target larvae during the first 6 years of treatment. However, under this high selection pressure, C. quinquefasciatus showed a significant level of resistance to C3-41 from years seven to eight. The resistance ratio of field-collected larvae at LC 50 was calculated to be 22 672-fold in comparison with the susceptible laboratory colony. Interestingly, no cross-resistance was observed to B. sphaericus strain LP1-G which had the same toxicity against both susceptible and resistant larvae, and B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis was found to be more active to the latter than the former. After six months treatment with the B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis formulation in the B. sphaericus resistant population area, the mosquito population recovered its susceptibility to B. sphaericus C3-41, with the resistance ratio of field-collected larvae dropping from 22 672- to 5.67-fold.     

Oxidative damage to osteoblasts can be alleviated by early autophagy through the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway—Implications for the treatment of osteoporosis

Oxidative stress can damage various cellular components of osteoblasts, and is regarded as a pivotal pathogenic factor for bone loss. Increasing evidence indicates a significant role of cell autophagy in response to oxidative stress. However, the role of autophagy in the osteoblasts under oxidative stress remains to be clarified. In this study, we verified that hydrogen peroxide induced autophagy and apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner in osteoblastic Mc3T3-E1 cells. Both 3-methyladenine (the early steps of autophagy inhibitor) and bafilomycin A1 (the last steps of autophagy inhibitor) enhanced the cell apoptosis and reactive oxygen species level in the osteoblasts insulted by hydrogen peroxide. However, promotion of autophagy with either a pharmacologic inducer (rapamycin) or the Beclin-1 overexpressing technique rescued the cell apoptosis and reduced the reactive oxygen species level in the cells. Treatment with H₂O₂ significantly increased the levels of carbonylated proteins, malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis markers. The damaged mitochondria were cleared by autophagy. Furthermore, the molecular levels of the endoplasmic reticula stress signaling pathway changed in hydrogen peroxide-treated Mc3T3-E1 cells, and blocking this stress signaling pathway by RNA interference against candidates of glucose-regulated protein 78 and protein kinase-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase decreased autophagy while increasing apoptosis in the cells. In conclusion, oxidative damage to osteoblasts could be alleviated by early autophagy through the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway. Our findings suggested that modulation of osteoblast autophagy could have a potentially therapeutic value for osteoporosis.
