Seven species of bees from the eastern United States, representing four families in the Apoidea, were dissected and examined for nematode associates. Dufour''s glands in females of Halictus ligatus, Augochlora pura mosieri, and Augochlorella gratiosa (Halictidae) from Florida were infested with dauer juveniles of Aduncospiculum halicti (Diplogasteridae). The Dufour''s glands of Colletes thoracicus (Colletidae) females from Maryland were infested with dauer juveniles of a new species of Koerneria sp. (Diplogasteridae), and abdominal glands of females of Andrena alleghaniensis (Andrenidae) from New York were infested with dauer juveniles of another new species of Koerneria. The lateral and median oviducts, Dufour''s glands, and poison sacs in females of Anthophora abrupta (Anthophoridae) from Maryland and Alabama were infested with dauer juveniles of a new species of Bursaphelenchus sp. (Aphelenchoididae). Cross sections of the nematode-infested poison sacs of A. abrupta revealed two types of humoral host defense reactions.  相似文献

Abstract The potential of rumen anaerobic fungi for fermenting untreated woods has been assessed using two Neocallimastix species isolated from sheep. When a strain of N. frontalis was incubated for 11 days with wood from 12 hardwood (angiosperm) species, many woods were measurably fermented, with wood from Populus tremuloides (32%) and Fagus sylvatica (21%) being the most highly degraded. This N. frontalis solubilised celulose, hemicellulose and lignin in P. tremuloides wood. Lower degradation (17%) of P. tremuloides wood by a different species of Neocallimastix showed that the choice of fungus as well as the structure and chemistry of the wood influenced the amount of wood cell wall degraded by anaerobic fungi. The amount of degradation was not related to the length of fungal rhizoids.  相似文献

Summary Cytochalasins B and D in the concentration range 0.5–10 g ml–1 produced similar effects on growth, movement and cytoplasmic structure in the pollen tubes of Iris spp. cultured in vitro. Continuous video recording showed that at 5 g ml–1, CB was capable of stopping organelle circulation in as short a period as 20 s. The usually elongated vegetative nuclei were also arrested, and subsequently contracted irregularly. Generative cells were not radically changed in shape, but occasionally moved erratically before being halted. Detailed examination of CD- and CB-treated tubes regarded as being capable of recovering growth upon transfer to normal medium revealed several characteristic effects on cytoplasmic structure. Fibrils presumed to consist of, or contain, microfilament bundles are readily visible in the older parts of the living tube where they form the pathways of organelle movement; these were either condensed into amorphous columns or fragmented by treatment. In the distal parts of the tube, the cytoplasm had contracted into amorphous masses which continued to show very slow shape changes. With the arrest of extension growth, pectin accumulated over the tube tip and in patches along the flanks. In a medium containing 1 mM ATP, recovery from treatment was achieved in some instances within l min. Organelle circulation in the younger tubes was resumed, and fresh adventive tube tips were formed. The fibrillar system of the older tubes was not restored, however; instead, the cytoplasm in these zones formed aggregates which underwent continuous amoeboid movement, the organelles within moving rapidly in irregular trajectories with no indication of the resumption of the original long-range cyclotic flux. Some possible implications of the results are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Neomycin phosphotransferase II (neo) is a selectable marker gene used extensively in plant transformation experiments. Here we evaluate immunological detection of its gene product (NPTII) as an alternative to widely used radioactive assays. We have taken a commercially available non-radioactive NPTII Enzyme linked-Immunosorbant Assay (ELISA) kit, modified the protocol for application to plant tissues, and used it to quantify levels of NPTII protein in transformed plants. The ELISA proved safe, economical and convenient to reliably screen and quantify NPTII protein in large numbers of plant samples. The sensitivity of the ELISA for NPTII detection in tobacco plants is at least an order of magnitude greater than a widely used radioactive gel assay. Using three replicates per sample, standard errors are low and the assay is highly reproducibleover time for tissue-cultured tobacco. However, background readings varied with plant species, and also with plant age for untransformed glasshouse-grown tobacco. It is therefore essential to ensure that untransformed controls are closely matched to test plant.  相似文献

Phosphorus and nitrogen excretion rates by zooplankton communities from two eutrophic and shallow Dutch lakes were measured in laboratory. The variations in excretion rates in the lakes (May–October) were caused mainly by fluctuation in zooplankton biomass. Mean summer excretion rates (June–September) were 2.4 and 0.9 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 in Lake Loosdercht and Lake Breukeleveen, respectively. This difference between the lakes was caused mainly by the lower zooplankton biomass in Lake Breukeleveen. The excretion of 2.4 µg PO4P·1–1·d compared with the calculated P-demand of phytoplankton of 8.0 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 is substantial in the summer (June–September) and far more important than the external P-supply of 0.4 µg P·1–1·d–1 and sediment release of 0.5 µg P·1–1·d–1. Both temperature and composition of zooplankton affected the weight specific excretion rates of the zooplankton community. The weight specific community excretion rates of P and N increased with temperature (exponential model); 1–8 g PO4P·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 and 5–42 µg NH3N·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 (10°C–20°C).  相似文献

Summary This study was conducted to estimate the degree of association of smut (Ustilago scitaminea Syd.) resistance in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) between races A and B in Hawaii and to estimate the heritability of resistance to both races. The estimated degree of association was 0.18. Although statistically significant, the degree of association of resistance between races A and B was near zero and therefore of no practical importance. Selection for resistance to one race would have little effect on the frequency of resistance to the other race in the following sexual generation. Heritabilities in the broad sense estimated from the parent population on a plot mean basis were 0.96 and 0.91 for races A and B, respectively. Selection for smut resistance should be very effective between populations of asexual generations. Heritabilities in the narrow sense estimated from parent-progeny regression analysis on a family mean basis were 0.51 and 0.47 for races A and B, respectively. The response of tephritid fruit flies to variously coloured sticky traps was studied in the field in southeastern Queensland over three seasons (1978–81). Three species, Dacus tryoni (Froggatt), D. neohumeralis Hardy and D. cacuminatus (Hering), made up the majority of the flies captured. On a per unit area basis, a sticky flat trap was more efficient than a sticky wing trap and was adopted as the trap design. Daylight fluorescent (DF) Saturn Yellow captured significantly more flies than any of the other ten colours, or perspex and aluminium foil, tested, although the DF colours Lime, Blaze Orange and Emerald were also attractive. There was a significant correlation between the number of flies captured by a colour and the difference, in nanometres, between the peak reflected wavelength of the colour and 550 nm which is quoted as the peak wavelength reflected by green leaves. The three species did not differ in their responses to the coloured traps, and more males than females were captured. When either cuelure or methyl eugenol was added to the sticky traps no one colour emerged as significantly superior, but the yellow, and yellow/green DF colours consistently caught more flies. The attractiveness of coloured traps declined as the number of flies captured increased. The efficiency of Steiner and McPhail traps was not increased by the addition of any attractive colour. Of various possible trap shapes of equivalent surface area, circular and square traps captured more flies than did triangular, rectangular and diamond shaped traps. When spheres were tested, those of 10 cm diameter captured more flies than those of 5 cm diameter, and more flies were caught on black, than on yellow or green spheres.
Résumé Plusieurs espèces de téphritidées, principalement Dacus tryoni, D. neohumeralis et D. cacuminatus, ont été capturées avec des pièges gluants colorés dans le S.E. Queensland (Australie) pendant 3 saisons (1978–81). Des pièges plats de 15×20 cm ont capturé plus de mouches/cm2 que des pièges ailés formés par 2 plans à 90°. Les couleurs jaune-vert ont été préferées par les 3 espèces, le jaune saturne lumière du jour fluorescent ayant été le plus attractif. Une corrélation significative a été trouvée entre le nombre de mouches capturées par une couleur et la différence en nanomètres entre le mode des longueurs d'onde reflétées par cette couleur et 550 nm considéré généralement comme le mode des longueurs d'onde reflétées par les feuilles vertes. Les 3 espèces ont montré les mêmes réponses aux pièges colorés et le nombre de mâles avait tendance à excéder celui des femelles. Quand de la cuelure ou du méthyl eugénol étaient ajoutés aux pièges gluants, aucune couleur n'était significativement supérieure, mais les couleurs fluorescentes lumière du jour jaune et jaune-vert ont capturé nettement plus de mouches que le bleu, l'orange, le rouge, le noir, le blanc, la feuille d'aluminium ou le perspex clair. Le taux de capture diminuait plus le nombre de mouches sur le piège augmentait. Ceci peut expliquer la diminution apparente de la discrimination entre les couleurs quand des leurres mâles sont posés sur les pièges. Des expériences avec des pièges tachetés et un retrait quotidien des mouches ont montré que la diminution d'attractivité était une réponse à un stimulus visuel. Après plusieurs jours d'exposition, un piège de couleur relativement peu attractive, capturant des mouches à un taux faible mais appréciable, a capturé un nombre de mouches voisin de celui d'un piège de couleur attractive qui avait commencé par capturer un grand nombre de mouches, mais avait vu baisser son attractivité par suite de la présence des mouches captives. Les données hebdomadaires sur les captures n'ont pas présenté de différences suivant les couleurs, mais la sommation des captures quotidiennes (avec retrait quotidien des mouches) sur la même période a montré des différences d'attractivité significatives.Les pièges de Steiner et de McPhail n'ont présenté aucun taux de capture différent quand ils étaient peints sur les 2/3 inférieurs avec des couleurs attractives jaune-vert.Des sphères noires ont capturé plus de mouches que des sphères rouges, jaunes ou vertes, et des sphères de 10 cm de diamètre étaient plus attractives que celles de 5 cm.Quand un choix de pièges plats de la même couleur et de la même surface mais de formes diverses a été proposé aux mouches, les pièges circulaires et carrés ont capturé plus de mouches que les pièges triangulaires, rectangulaires ou rhombiques.

Deeper coral reefs experience reduced temperatures and light and are often shielded from localized anthropogenic stressors such as pollution and fishing. The deep reef refugia hypothesis posits that light‐dependent stony coral species at deeper depths are buffered from thermal stress and will avoid bleaching‐related mass mortalities caused by increasing sea surface temperatures under climate change. This hypothesis has not been tested because data collection on deeper coral reefs is difficult. Here we show that deeper (mesophotic) reefs, 30–75 m depth, in the Caribbean are not refugia because they have lower bleaching threshold temperatures than shallow reefs. Over two thermal stress events, mesophotic reef bleaching was driven by a bleaching threshold that declines 0.26 °C every +10 m depth. Thus, the main premise of the deep reef refugia hypothesis that cooler environments are protective is incorrect; any increase in temperatures above the local mean warmest conditions can lead to thermal stress and bleaching. Thus, relatively cooler temperatures can no longer be considered a de facto refugium for corals and it is likely that many deeper coral reefs are as vulnerable to climate change as shallow water reefs.  相似文献

By accelerating crop development, warming climates may result in mismatches between key sensitive growth stages and extreme climate events, with severe consequences for crop yield and food security. Using recent estimates of gene responses to vernalization and photoperiod in wheat, we modelled the flowering times of all ‘potential’ genotypes as influenced by the velocity of climate change across the Australian wheatbelt. In the period 1957–2010, seasonal increases in temperature of 0.012 °C yr?1 were recorded and changed flowering time of a mid‐season wheat genotype by an average ?0.074 day yr?1, with flowering ‘velocity’ of up to 0.95 km yr?1 towards the coastal edges of the wheatbelt; this is an estimate of how quickly the given genotype would have to be ‘moved’ across the landscape to maintain its original flowering time. By 2030, these national changes are projected to accelerate by up to 3‐fold for seasonal temperature and by up to 5‐fold for flowering time between now and 2030, with average national shifts in flowering time of 0.33 and 0.41 day yr?1 between baseline and the worst climate scenario tested for 2030 and 2050, respectively. Without new flowering alleles in commercial germplasm, the life cycle of wheat crops is predicted to shorten by 2 weeks by 2030 across the wheatbelt for the most pessimistic climate scenario. While current cultivars may be otherwise suitable for future conditions, they will flower earlier due to warmer temperatures. To allow earlier sowing to escape frost, heat and terminal drought, and to maintain current growing period of early‐sown wheat crops in the future, breeders will need to develop and/or introduce new genetic sources for later flowering, more so in the eastern part of the wheatbelt.  相似文献

The effects of climate change are difficult to predict for many marine species because little is known of their response to climate variations in the past. However, long‐term chronologies of growth, a variable that integrates multiple physical and biological factors, are now available for several marine taxa. These allow us to search for climate‐driven synchrony in growth across multiple taxa and ecosystems, identifying the key processes driving biological responses at very large spatial scales. We hypothesized that in northwest (NW) Australia, a region that is predicted to be strongly influenced by climate change, the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon would be an important factor influencing the growth patterns of organisms in both marine and terrestrial environments. To test this idea, we analyzed existing growth chronologies of the marine fish Lutjanus argentimaculatus, the coral Porites spp. and the tree Callitris columellaris and developed a new chronology for another marine fish, Lethrinus nebulosus. Principal components analysis and linear model selection showed evidence of ENSO‐driven synchrony in growth among all four taxa at interannual time scales, the first such result for the Southern Hemisphere. Rainfall, sea surface temperatures, and sea surface salinities, which are linked to the ENSO system, influenced the annual growth of fishes, trees, and corals. All four taxa had negative relationships with the Niño‐4 index (a measure of ENSO status), with positive growth patterns occurring during strong La Niña years. This finding implies that future changes in the strength and frequency of ENSO events are likely to have major consequences for both marine and terrestrial taxa. Strong similarities in the growth patterns of fish and trees offer the possibility of using tree‐ring chronologies, which span longer time periods than those of fish, to aid understanding of both historical and future responses of fish populations to climate variation.  相似文献
