Earthworm survival in oil contaminated soil   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Earthworms are an important component of the soil biota and their response to oil pollution needs to be better understood. Laboratory investigations were undertaken to determine the concentrations of crude oil in soil that leads to death of Lumbricus terrestris and Eisenia fetida and to determine the propensity of L. terrestris to move away from contaminated soil. Clemville sandy clay loam was amended to contain maximum oil contents of 1.5 – 2.5% depending on the particular experiment. Additionally, the ability of L. terrestristo survive in bioremediated oil-contaminated soil was evaluated. An oil content of 0.5% was not harmful to survival of earthworms for 7 d but an oil concentration of 1.5% reduced survival to less than 40%. Bioremediated soil containing 1.2% oil did not reduce survival of L. terrestrisduring 10 d. Survival of L. terrestrisin unweathered oil was improved when free movement between contaminated and uncontaminated soil was possible. Casts of earthworms exposed to oil-containing soil contained 0.2% total petroleum hydrocarbons. An allowable regulatory level of 1% oil contamination in soil may not allow for survival of earthworms.  相似文献

Vermifiltration is a new technology using earthworms to process organically polluted water. A pilot associated with a swine facility (piggery) with 66 swine was developed to treat diluted manure, produce earthworms and vermicompost, and reduce air pollution. The aim of the experiment reported here was to devise an integrated method – biological, chemical and physical – for further research and development of vermifiltration in diluted swine manure, and provide some preliminary results. The earthworm population increased by 30% in 4 weeks, indicating the acclimation of the earthworms. A reduction in ammonia emission was observed of about 50% for the whole system. Higher water (+100%), carbon (+70%), and total nitrogen (+80%) gaseous losses were observed compared to conventional breeding on a slatted floor. This methodology can be used for further studies to develop vermifiltration for earthworm and vermicompost production from diluted animal manure, without pollution transfer.  相似文献

为寻找土壤低浓度多环芳烃污染分子生物标记物,采用了抑制消减双杂交的方法构建了赤子爱胜蚓在苯并[a]芘(BaP)人工土壤污染胁迫下的差异表达cDNA文库,经测序和基因比对分析后,在上调文库中分别发现2个与热休克蛋白HSP70和1个与HSP90显著匹配的cDNA克隆.经定量PCR验证了0。1 mg·kg-1和1。0 mg·kg-1 BaP对赤子爱胜蚓HSP70和HSP90的诱导作用,表明这两个新克隆到的赤子爱胜蚓热休克蛋白基因可作为土壤污染监测的备选分子生物标记物.  相似文献

Summary In the nervous system of the earthworm Eisenia foetida, we have previously found thyroglobulin-like immunoreactive neurons. In the present study iodination activity was investigated by injecting worms or incubating them in vivo with radioiodine; animals treated with methimazole (MMI), an inhibitor of peroxidase-catalyzed iodination, served as controls. Radioiodinated proteins were identified in soluble extracts from 125I-incubated animals; the sedimentation pattern of soluble proteins from cephalic segments showed a peak of radioactivity in the 3–4 S region. In animals pretreated with 10-3 M MMI for 48 h, 125I-incorporation into soluble proteins from cephalic segments was drastically reduced. Light-microscopic autoradiographic studies showed silver-grains selectively concentrated in the brain and ventral nerve cord of 125I-injected animals. The highest grain-density occurred in the cerebral ganglion beginning 5 min after tracer injection; the reaction product was mainly distributed between the neurosecretory cells and neuropile fibres in the zone of the presumptive plexiform neurohaemal complex. In MMI-pretreated animals the reaction product was not visible in either cerebral ganglion or ventral nerve cord. Of interest, the setae appeared consistently positive with or without MMI treatment. These observations indicate that protein iodination involving peroxidase occurs in the nervous system of earthworms and suggest that iodination mechanisms, other than peroxidase-catalyzed, may be operating in some scleroprotein structures such as setae.  相似文献

The rhabditid nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is a lethal parasite for slugs that is sold commercially in Europe under the trade name Nemaslug™. We evaluated the effects of P. hermaphrodita on the earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny). Adults of E. fetida were exposed in one-liter glass beakers to P. hermaphrodita at three concentrations (1×, 10× and 50× of the field recommended rate of 3×109 billion nematodes/ha) during a 14-day period in an artificial soil substrate. The average body weight, burrowing behavior, mortality and other clinical signals of the earthworms were recorded at 0, 7, and 14 days after exposure to the treatments. In addition, injured earthworms (posterior ends removed) were exposed to the 10× field recommended rate of the commercial formulation. Neither intact nor injured E. fetida showed susceptibility to the slug-parasitic nematode P. hermaphrodita during the 14 days of exposure even at concentrations 10 and 50 times higher than the label dose. However, the worms in the attenuated control (autoclaved formulation) had higher mortality and lost less weight compared to the other treatments. Under the conditions of the test, we conclude that the use of the commercially available strain of P. hermaphrodita is safe to E. fetida.  相似文献

The distribution and chemical neuroanatomy of nervous elements and certain pharmacological–physiological characteristics of the innervation of the body wall in earthworms are described. Solitary sensory bipolar cells can be found among the epithelial cells. These bipolar cells contain serotonin, tyrosine hydroxylase, histamine, gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), Eisenia tetradecapeptide, proctolin or rhodopsin in various combinations. In the body wall, the plexus submuscularis is composed of nerve fibres only, whereas the plexus subepithelialis and muscularis also contain solitary nerve cells. These cells display histamine, GABA or neuropeptide Y immunoreactivity. The fibres of the three plexuses are reactive to serotonin, histamine, Eisenia tetradecapeptide, proctolin, GABA and neuropeptide Y antibodies. FMRFamide-immunoreactive fibres of the plexus muscularis originate from the central nervous system, whereas axons containing the other studied molecules are derived from both peripheral and central structures. High pressure liquid chromatography assays have revealed serotonin, dopamine and histamine in the body wall. Contractions of the body wall musculature can be elicited with serotonin and FMRFamide. Serotonin-evoked contractions are suppressed by the application of GABA. Serotonin acts both directly on the muscle cell receptors and indirectly through initiating transmitter release from the nervous elements, whereas the FMRFamide-induced contractions seem to be mediated through the muscle cell receptors only. The pharmacological profiles of the serotonin and GABA receptors resemble those of the vertebrate 5-HT3 and GABAB receptor types. Our findings indicate that both the sensory and efferent system of the annelid body wall operate by means of a variety of neuroactive compounds, suggesting a complex role of signalling systems in the regulation of this organ.This work was supported by the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA; grant nos. This study was conducted to evaluate the optimum composting approach for the management of spent coffee grounds from the restaurant and ready-to-serve coffee industry. Three composting systems were assessed, including in-vessel composting, vermicomposting bins, and aerated static pile bin composting, over study periods ranging from 47 to 98 days. Total carbon content was reduced by 5-7% in the spent coffee ground treatments across the three composting systems. Nitrogen and other mineral nutrient contents were conserved or enhanced from the initial to the final composts in all the composting systems assessed. Earthworm growth and survival (15-80%) was reduced in all the treatments but mortality rates were lower in coffee treatments with cardboard additions. A decline in earthworm mortality with cardboard additions was the result of reduced exposure to organic compounds and chemicals released through the decomposition of spent coffee grounds.  相似文献

The toxicities of three oil products with boiling-point ranges representative of petroleum hydrocarbons were tested on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) to investigate the correlation between bioaccumulated concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toxicity. The toxicities to earthworms were in the sequence: kerosene > diesel > bunker-C. After 14 days, the LC50s of the soils contaminated with kerosene, diesel, and bunker-C were 1079, 9135, and 15,609 mg/kg, respectively. Analysis of the body residue concentrations of PAHs in the earthworms showed that the accumulation of alkyl PAHs predominated that of the 16 priority PAHs. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified 12 PAHs, including four alkylated naphthalenes, as the oil constituents that affected mortality in the kerosene-contaminated soil. For the diesel-contaminated soil, eight PAHs were identified, including dibenzothiophene. It was not clear which compounds affected mortality in the bunker-C soil. Across the three series, biota-to-soil accumulation factors (BSAFs) ranged from 10–2.05 to 103.98, and generally increased as the hydrophobicity (Kow) or molecular weight of the alkyl PAHs increased. The toxicity endpoints of each oil product can be used as reference values in the risk assessment of soils contaminated with petroleum, and individual PAHs screened out have implications for future toxicity assessment of petroleum hydrocarbons.  相似文献

内生降解菌定殖可促进水稻中农药等有机污染物的降解代谢,研究功能内生菌对农药暴露下水稻根际微生态的影响,可为利用植物-微生物互作调控农作物农药残留及修复农田生态环境污染提供科学依据。以水稻根际土壤中的蚯蚓、土壤酶和微生物群落为研究对象,分析接种内生菌Stenotrophomonas pavanii DJL-M3对水稻根际微生态响应多菌灵胁迫的影响。结果表明:多菌灵暴露导致水稻根际土壤过氧化氢酶活性增强,脲酶和蔗糖酶活性被抑制;多菌灵污染可对水稻根际周围的蚯蚓造成氧化损伤,致使其体内丙二醛累积并诱导超氧化物歧化酶和乙酰胆碱酯酶过表达;多菌灵残留显著降低水稻根际土壤微生物群落的多样性与碳源代谢活性。接种内生降解菌S.pavanii DJL-M3促进了水稻根际残留多菌灵的降解,缓解根际土壤微生物与蚯蚓所受胁迫压力,显著提高了土壤脲酶、蔗糖酶活力以及蚯蚓的存活率,并有效提升了水稻根际微生物群落的代谢活性与多样性。因此,接种内生降解菌S.pavanii DJL-M3有助于多菌灵残留污染下稻田土壤生态环境的恢复。  相似文献
