Abstract 1. The relationship of growth and body size with reproductive effort in animal species has been studied much less for males than for females. This imbalance applies to Orchesella cincta (L.) (Collembola), an insect with indeterminate growth, in which egg production is related positively to body size and negatively to growth.
2. To allow a comparison of the reproductive effort of male and female O. cincta , development and growth in immature stages of both sexes, and growth and spermatophore production for adult males were studied.
3. Embryonic development time and hatchling size did not differ between prospective males and females, but from hatching on the trajectories diverged, with males growing more slowly and maturing earlier and at a much smaller body size than females.
4. Neither the number of spermatophores deposited in the first adult instar (= inter-moult period) nor the total number of spermatophores deposited during seven instars was related to body size or growth.
5. Differences in growth rate between instars with and without spermatophore deposition indicated that the physiology of spermatophore production inhibits growth, which, however, was compensated for during the next instar.
6. The difference in the relationship of gamete production with body size and growth between males and females explains the divergence of their size at maturity.  相似文献

'Why polyploidy is rarer in animals than in plants': myths and mechanisms   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Although polyploidy has been involved in speciation in both animals and plants, the general perception is often that it is too rare to have been a significant factor in animal evolution and its role in plant diversification has been questioned. These views have resulted in a bias towards explanations for what deters polyploidy, rather than the somewhat more interesting question of the mechanisms by which polyploidy arises and becomes established in both plants and animals. The evidence for and against some of the traditional views on polyploidy is reviewed, with an attempt to synthesize factors promoting evolution through genome duplication in both groups. It is predicted that polyploidy should be more common in temperate than in tropical breeders because environmental fluctuations may promote unreduced gamete formation, it should be most common in organisms with sufficient numbers of gametes that random meiotic problems can be overcome, and it should be more frequent when mechanisms to promote assortative mating are a direct byproduct of genome duplication.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 453–466.  相似文献

The "contact reaction" is an extremely rapid allogeneic cytotoxic reaction (ACR) mediated by hemocytes in the solitary ascidian Halocynthia roretzi. It has been proposed that regulation of the alloreactivity of hemocytes may be involved in preference for fertilization or self-sterility in this species. To identify the receptors and target ligands involved both in self-recognition by somatic cells and self-discrimination by gametes, we produced monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that inhibit the ACR mediated by hemocytes and tested their effects on fertilization. Six different mAbs that inhibit the ACR were prepared and categorized into three groups. Although all three mAbs seemed to have the same ability to inhibit the ACR, almost constant and statistically significant inhibition (CRB1.1) and infrequent but significant inhibition (CRB2.1, and CRB3.1) of the ACR were observed in the same pairs of animals. Pretreatment of the unfertilized eggs with CRB1.1, CRB2.1, and CRB3.1, resulted in the constant and statistically significant inhibition, infrequent but significant inhibition, and no inhibition, respectively, of fertilization. Antigens recognized by CRB1.1 (CRB1.1 antigens) were detected on the cell surface of all types of hemocytes and on the vitelline coat and follicle cells of unfertilized eggs. CRB2.1 and CRB3.1 antigens were detected on the surface of certain types of hemocytes and follicle cells, but not on the vitelline coat. CRB mAbs were directed against different epitopes in the N-linked glycan on glycoproteins. These common carbohydrate antigens on somatic cells and gametes may function in some recognition processes in ACR and fertilization in H. roretzi.  相似文献

Clonal strains of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium nolleri Ellegaard and Moestrup were intercrossed to determine if cyst‐related traits are genetically regulated and to clarify unknown aspects in the sexuality of this species. The objectives were to determine whether the parental identity influenced the physiological and morphological aspects of the cyst offspring, and to describe and compare nuclear development and cell division of encysting and non‐encysting zygotes. Variables characteristic of each parental cross (difference in growth rates among parents, cyst production (CP), and genetic distance (GD) among parents assessed via an amplified fragment length analysis analysis) were studied to seek for possible relationships of the parental crosses with some characteristics of the cyst offspring (cyst size, length of dormancy period, germination success, and germling viability (V)). A principal component analysis using these variables showed three main results: (1) the dormancy period of cysts responded to a simple pattern of inheritance, (2) the larger the GD between parents, the smaller the CP, and progeny V, and (3) the size of cysts was influenced by both CP and the parental strain identity. A stable inheritance of the short dormancy period (14.6±5.5 days), dominant over medium (31.0±8.5 days) and long periods (52.7±9.2 days), was confirmed through two subsequent generations of cysts. The regulation of the sexual processes by a multiple loci system is discussed based on the pattern of inheritance of the dormancy period and the number of sexual recombination events recorded within cultures with self‐CP capability. Fusion of the gamete nuclei happened 0–48 h after the total cytoplasmic fusion. The nucleus of the zygote was bilobed and had thick and distinct chromosomes. Similar processes of nuclear and cell division occurred in the non‐encysting or encysting planozygote, and were characterized by the loss of the chromosomal structure, an apparent increase of the DNA content, and the formation of thinner chromosomes.  相似文献

The sexual life cycle of Gloeodinium montanum Klebs was examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. In unialgal cultures G. montanum divided predominantly by simple division, giving rise to two nonmotile cells. When placed in fresh medium, 2–4 biflagellated swarmers were formed from the vegetative cells. Swarmers developed directly into vegetative cells or acted as gametes. Both isogamy and anisogamy were observed. Gloeodinium montanum is homothallic. Fusion occurred in the non-motile state producing a large aplanozygote, which germinated after approximately two months to a year or more. Zygote germination liberated four aplanospores. Budding of the zygote, resulting from unequal division of the protoplast and multiple fusion attempts also were observed.  相似文献

 Two diploid potato parents, W5295.7 and W5337.3, and their colchicine-doubled tetraploids were used as male to cross with three cultivars: ‘Raritan’, ‘Shepody’ and ‘Superior’. Both diploids produced 2n gametes via first division restitution (FDR) during meiosis. Field experiments were carried out on seedlings of the 12 hybrid progenies in 1991 and 1992. Six of the progenies represented the tetraploid-diploid (4x-2x) hybrids and the other six tetraploid-tetraploid (4x-4x) progenies. The genetic consequence of FDR gametes was examined by comparing the mean and genotypic variance of six tuber traits of 4x-2x and 4x-4x progenies. Tuber appearance, eye depth, specific gravity and tuber size showed significant differences between the means of 4x-2x and 4x-4x progenies from either both or one of the diploid parents. The genotypic variances of these traits in 4x-2x progenies were reduced in various degrees from those observed in 4x-4x progenies. Major genes responsible for the inheritance of these traits are probably located close to the centromere. The two diploid parents may also carry alleles of different size and direction of non-additive genic effects in their 2n gametes. The 4x-2x progenies also outperformed the 4x-4x progenies with respect to the means of total and marketable yield. There were thus heterotic gene loci for high yield located close to the centromere. No marked reduction of genotypic variance, however, was observed. The results suggest that genes for yield would be scattered between the centromere and the site for maximum recombination. Gametogenesis in Atractomorpha porcata Hoffman was initiated b the synchronous mitotic division of nuclei within a multinucleate gametangium. Uninucleate gametes were subsequently produced following two series of cytokinetic divisions. The first series involved the formation of phycoplast microtubules (phycoplastic cytokinesis), whereas the second series did not (nonphycoplastic cytokinesis). Centrioles were connected by a rudimentary striated distal fiber by the time they migrated to the planes of division preceding the first series of cytokinetic division. These first divisions produced binucleate gametocytes. A well-developed flagellar apparatus lay near the cell surface in close proximity to each nucleus of the gametocyte prior to the second series of cytokinetic divisions that produced the uninucleate gametes. As seen in apical view, the paired basal bodies were directly opposed, with no lateral displacement of their longitudinal axes. In lateral view, the paired basal bodies diverged from one another at an angle of 130–180° (female) or 170–180° (male) and were connected by an arched, distal striated fiber about 670–750 nm long and 600 nm at its widest part. Four electron-opaque, pyramid-shaped lateral bodies flanked the basal bodies in close contact with their undersurfaces. The flagellar roots demonstrated a cruciate arrangement, with s = 6–9 over 1 (female gametes) or 7–10 over 1 (male gametes) microtubules and d= 2 microtubules. In male gametes, one of the multistranded roots was located close to the eyespot, and a second system of cytoskeletal microtubules was detected internally. Based on gamete ultrastructure, Atractomorpha porcata appears to be the most undifferentiated member of the genus.  相似文献

With only three living individuals left on this planet, the northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) could be considered doomed for extinction. It might still be possible, however, to rescue the (sub)species by combining novel stem cell and assisted reproductive technologies. To discuss the various practical options available to us, we convened a multidisciplinary meeting under the name “Conservation by Cellular Technologies.” The outcome of this meeting and the proposed road map that, if successfully implemented, would ultimately lead to a self‐sustaining population of an extremely endangered species are outlined here. The ideas discussed here, while centered on the northern white rhinoceros, are equally applicable, after proper adjustments, to other mammals on the brink of extinction. Through implementation of these ideas we hope to establish the foundation for reversal of some of the effects of what has been termed the sixth mass extinction event in the history of Earth, and the first anthropogenic one. The flagellar basal apparatus of the brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus was re‐investigated in details using transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography. As a result, three‐dimensional structures with spatial arrangement of bands and microtubular flagellar rootlets were observed. Fibrous structures linking the anterior flagellar basal body to the major anterior rootlet (R3) or the bypassing rootlet was newly discovered in this study. A direct attachment from the minor anterior rootlet (R4) to the anterior and posterior basal bodies was also discovered, as were attachments from the minor posterior rootlet (R1) to the deltoid striated band and from the major posterior rootlet (R2) to the posterior fibrous band. The microtubular flagellar rootlets were connected to the bands and to the anterior or posterior basal body. These bands may have a role in maintaining the spatial arrangement of the anterior and posterior flagellar basal bodies and the microtubular flagellar rootlets. A numbering system of the basal body triplets was established by tracing axonemal doublets in the serial sections. From these observations, the precise position of two flagellar basal bodies, bands, and flagellar rootlets was determined.  相似文献

The marine brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye is frequently infected by a latent DNA virus that multiplies in modified sporangia and gametangia of the host. We describe a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure for the amplification and detection of viral DNA in Ectocarpus. PCR analysis of parents and progeny plants confirmed that virus DNA passes through meiosis like a Mendelian trait. An infected sporophyte produced equal numbers of gametophytes with and without the viral genome. Thus, meiosis in sexual populations of the host acts as a mechanism for the creation of virus-free progeny.  相似文献
