1. In annual plant communities, the seed bank determines each generation's potential emergence and any factor that influences it could alter community structure. Harvester ants are common seed predators that may cause seed sources and seed rain composition to vary. 2. In semi‐arid shrubland of the Negev desert of Israel, we hypothesised that the positive effects of dense vegetation on nests of the harvester ant Messor ebeninus Sant. would outweigh reduction by granivory. 3. To test whether nests were seed sources, we removed vegetation on 10 of 20 sampled nests prior to seeding. We tested the interaction between seed sources and granivory by locating seed traps at three locations: nests, foraging trails, and unvisited areas. Trapped seeds were recorded during spring and summer dispersal. Plant recruitment from the altered seed bank was recorded the following spring. 4. During April, seeds were more abundant near nests than the other locations and at uncut compared with cut nests. Foraging trails had fewer species and higher equitability compared with nests or unvisited areas. May and June to August had highest species richness at nests, but richness of cut and uncut nests were similar. Ordination of plant recruitment showed slightly lower vegetation community variation by diminished species in the cut seed bank. 5. While intact nest vegetation initially had high abundance of locally deposited seeds, it apparently blocked wind‐dispersed seeds later in the summer. Conversely, granivory reduced seed species richness only on trails and decreased dominance structure by preferential removal of some species.  相似文献

Mycorrhizas face unique anthropogenic stressors in urban environments, but the factors influencing their abundance in cities remains comparatively unstudied. Using green roofs as a model system, we built a conceptual model outlining the biotic and abiotic factors influencing arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal abundance in cities. We then tested this model and its multiple causal hypotheses with structural equation modeling using plant, soil, and AM fungal abundance measurements from 60 plots across 12 green roofs in Chicago, USA. The best direct predictor of AM fungal abundance was not plant cover, plant richness, or soil nutrients, but instead green roof age, suggesting temporal accumulation of AM fungal propagules in degraded urban environments. Soil P had the strongest total effect on AM fungal abundance both directly and via indirect promotion of plant cover. This study highlights knowledge gaps and challenges to studying the urban ecology of AM fungi.  相似文献

Understanding how large felids use space is essential for the design of conservation plans that are required for their survival. Jaguars (Panthera onca) and pumas (Puma concolor) are the largest felids in the Neotropics, and they are sympatric throughout the entire range of the jaguar. However, there is very little information about the spatial requirements of these two species in the tropical rainforests of Central America. Using satellite GPS collars, we compared the spatial ecology of jaguars and pumas in a tropical rainforest in southern Mexico. We found that jaguars had home ranges that were 2–6 times larger than those of pumas. The mean annual home range was 181.4 ± 4.0 km2 for female jaguars and 431.6 ± 152.6 km2 for males. Annual home range for the only female puma tracked was 34.3 km2, and 72.0 ± 85.2 km2 for males. Jaguars and pumas with overlapping home ranges showed little overlap of core areas and avoided using the same sites at the same time, which suggested that territoriality and avoidance were in play. Further evidence of avoidance was derived from our observation that pumas exhibited greater movement during the lightest periods of the day and jaguars moved most during the darkest. This temporal separation probably facilitates coexistence. Our data suggest that habitat destruction and fragmentation has more severe effects on jaguars than on pumas. According to our estimates, patches of at least 180 km2 of primary forest are required to meet the annual spatial requirements of female jaguars. Thus, to conserve jaguars in this region, large tracts of primary forest should be preserved. Importantly, this population of jaguars depends on the adequate preservation of connectivity between natural reserves in Mexico and Guatemala.  相似文献

Understanding the relative contributions of wild and managed pollinators, and the functional contributions made by a diverse pollinator community, is essential to the maintenance of yields in the 75% of our crops that benefit from insect pollination. We describe a field study and pollinator exclusion experiments conducted on two soft-fruit crops in a system with both wild and managed pollinators. We test whether fruit quality and quantity is limited by pollination, and whether different pollinating insects respond differently to varying weather conditions. Both strawberries and raspberries produced fewer marketable fruits when insects were excluded, demonstrating dependence on insect pollinators. Raspberries had a short flowering season which coincided with peak abundance of bees, and attracted many bees per flower. In contrast, strawberries had a much longer flowering season and appeared to be much less attractive to pollinators, so that ensuring adequate pollination is likely to be more challenging. The proportion of high-quality strawberries was positively related to pollinator abundance, suggesting that yield was limited by inadequate pollination on some farms. The relative abundance of different pollinator taxa visiting strawberries changed markedly through the season, demonstrating seasonal complementarity. Insect visitors responded differently to changing weather conditions suggesting that diversity can reduce the risk of pollination service shortfalls. For example, flies visited the crop flowers in poor weather and at the end of the flowering season when other pollinators were scarce, and so may provide a unique functional contribution. Understanding how differences between pollinator groups can enhance pollination services to crops strengthens the case for multiple species management. We provide evidence for the link between increased diversity and function in real crop systems, highlighting the risks of replacing all pollinators with managed alternatives.  相似文献

Steady-state trophic flow models of four benthic communities (seagrass, sand-gravel, sand and mud habitats) were constructed for a subtidal area in Tongoy Bay (Chile). Information of biomass, catches, food spectrum and dynamics of the commercial and non-commercial populations was used and the ECOPATH II software of Christensen and Pauly [Ecol. Modell. 61 (1992a) 169] was applied. The sea star Meyenaster gelatinosus and the crabs Cancer polyodon, C. porteri and Paraxanthus barbiger were found to be the most prominent predators in the benthic system. The scallop Argopecten purpuratus as well as other bivalves represented the principal secondary producers in the seagrass, sand-gravel and sand habitats, while the Infauna dominated the mud habitat. The highest total biomass and system throughput (33579.3 t/km2/year) was calculated for the sand-gravel habitat. The sand habitat had a negative net system production due to the amount of primary production imported from deeper waters to satisfy the food requirements of the large beach clam (Mulinia sp.) populations. The mean trophic level of the fishery varied between 2.06 (sand-gravel) and 3.92 (sand) reflecting the fact that the fishery concentrates on primary producers (i.e. algae and filter feeding), and on top predators (i.e. snails and crabs). Fishery is strongest in sand-gravel habitat, where annual catches amount to 122.05 g/m2. Low values of the relative Ascendency (A/C) (from 27.4 to 32.7%) suggest that the systems analysed are immature and highly resistant to external perturbations. Manipulations of the input data for the exploited species suggest that seagrass and sand-gravel habitats have a potential for a ∼3 times higher than the present production of scallops and the red algae Chondrocanthus chamissoi. Preliminary results of Mixed Trophic Impacts (MTI) analysis suggest that any management policy aimed at a man-made increase in the standing stocks of A. purpuratus and Ch. chamissoi in seagrass and sand-gravel habitats, and a removal of the seastar M. gelatinosus in the seagrass habitat appears justified.  相似文献

As a result of waterbird population declines, several habitat studies have been undertaken. Nonetheless, a vast majority of these studies fall short of a full assessment of the underlying relationship between functionality and coordinated development relationships between the habitat and threat variables. To comprehensively analyze the stability of the waterbird habitat in the Zhangjiangkou Mangrove National Nature Reserve (ZMNNR), this study offers a unique technique that integrates the functionality of the waterbird habitat with the coordinated development of habitat and threat variables in a GIS environment over a three-decade timeframe (1990–2020). The findings revealed that the very stable region of the research site grew by nearly 50% throughout the three-decade study period, with a substantial portion concentrated around the mangrove reserve. This growing distribution of highly stable sections in the mangrove reserve was believed to be the outcome of progressive expansion in habitat functioning and the region's counterbalanced interaction between habitat and threat variables. A comparison of stability within and beyond the mangrove reserve border found that an unbalanced link between habitat and threat variables resulted in a 23% decline in stability outside the mangrove reserve boundary. From 2020 to 2050, this deterioration was expected to worsen, eventually affecting more than half of the territory.Further investigation found that habitat type and area, ecosystem service value, habitat fragmentation, and wetness were all identified as the primary driving mechanisms influencing changes in habitat stability. Moreover, these driving forces were shown to have varied influences on changes in waterbird habitat stability. This approach's capacity to successfully analyze and discover significant regions of waterbird habitat and zones with a coordinated relationship between habitat and threat variables makes it a valuable technical reference tool to aid decision-makers in habitat conservation and eco-restoration studies.  相似文献

Plant diversity and land-use intensity have been shown to affect invertebrate herbivory. Several hypotheses predict positive (e.g. associational susceptibility) or negative (e.g. associational resistance) relationships of herbivory with plant species richness. Also, the strength and direction of reported relationships vary greatly between studies leading to the conclusion that relationships either depend on the specific system studied or that other unconsidered factors are more important. Here, we hypothesized that plant phylogenetic diversity is a stronger predictor of invertebrate herbivory than plant species richness because it integrates additional information about the phenotypical and functional composition of communities. We assessed the community-wide invertebrate herbivory, plant species richness and phylogenetic diversity across a range of land-use intensities including a total of 145 managed grasslands in three regions in Germany. Increasing land-use intensity decreased plant species richness and phylogenetic diversity. Plant species richness did not predict invertebrate herbivory. By contrast herbivory moderately increased with increasing plant phylogenetic diversity even after accounting for the effects of region and land use. The strength of direct effects of land-use intensity and indirect effects via altered phylogenetic diversity on herbivory, however, varied among regions. Our results suggest that increasing phylogenetic diversity of plant communities increases invertebrate herbivory probably by providing higher resource diversity. Differences between regions underline the need to account for regional peculiarities when attempting to generalize land-use effects on invertebrate herbivory.  相似文献

We examined the effect of whole-ecosystem manipulations of predator removal and nutrient enrichment on saltmarsh macroinfauna in the Plum Island Estuary, Massachusetts. Nitrate and phosphate loading rates were increased 10× above background levels in experimental creeks, and we significantly reduced (by 60%) the abundance of the killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, a key predator in this system. Two creek pairs were manipulated; Creek Pair 1 for three growing seasons and Creek Pair 2 for one. Infaunal responses were examined in four habitats along the inundation gradient: mudflat, creek wall, Spartina alterniflora, and S. patens habitats. Although benthic microalgae increased synergistically in our treatments, we detected no long-term, population-level numerical response by any taxon. Similarly, no long-term species diversity or community responses were observed. However, nutrient enrichment increased the population biomass of the polychaete Manayunkia aestuarina in the creek wall habitat and the oligochaete Cernosvitoviella immota in the S. alterniflora habitat. No numerical or biomass responses of infauna were detected in predator removal treatments although indirect effects associated with killifish reduction may have contributed to an ephemeral interaction between nutrient addition and predator reduction in S. patens habitat. Our data suggest that population and community responses between benthic microalgae and macroinfauna are not tightly coupled even though some species benefit from increased benthic algae biomass by achieving larger body size.  相似文献
