Tree root respiration utilizes a major portion of the primary production in forests and is an important process in the global carbon cycle. Because of the lack of ecologically relevant methods, tree root respiration in situ is much less studied compared with above-ground processes such as photosynthesis and leaf respiration. This study introduces a new (13)C natural tracer method for measuring tree root respiration in situ. The method partitions tree root respiration from soil respiration in buried root chambers. Rooting media substantially influenced root respiration rates. Measured in three media, the fine root respiration rates of longleaf pine were 0.78, 0.27 and 0.18 mg CO(2) carbon mg(-1) root nitrogen d(-1) at 25 degrees C in the native soil, tallgrass prairie soil, and sand-vermiculite mixture, respectively. Compared with the root excision method, the root respiration rate of longleaf pine measured by the field chamber method was 18% higher when using the native soil as rooting medium, was similar in the prairie soil, but was 42% lower if in the sand-vermiculite medium. This natural tracer method allows the use of an appropriate rooting medium and is capable of measuring root respiration nondestructively in natural forest conditions.  相似文献

Preserving biodiversity under current and future climates: a case study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Aim The conservation of biological and genetic diversity is a major goal of reserve systems at local, regional, and national levels. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources suggests a 12% threshold (area basis) for adequate protection of biological and genetic diversity of a plant community. However, thresholds based on area may protect only a small portion of the total diversity if the locations are chosen without regard to the variation within the community. The objectives of this study were to demonstrate methods to apply a coarse‐filter approach for identifying gaps in the current reserve system of the Psuedotsuga menziesii (Douglas‐fir) forest type group based on current climatic conditions and a global climate change scenario. Location Western United States. Method We used an ecological envelope approach that was based on seven bioclimatic factors, two topographic factors, and two edaphic factors. Multivariate factor analysis was then used to reduce the envelope to two dimensions. The relative density of habitat and protected areas were identified in each part of the envelope based on the current climate and potential future climate. We used this information to identify gaps in the reserve system. Results Although the protected areas occurred in all parts of the envelope, most existed in colder and drier areas. This was true for both the current climate and potential future climate. Main conclusion To protect more of the ecological envelope, future conservation efforts would be most effective in western Oregon, north‐western Washington, and north‐western California.  相似文献

Aphid-induced reduction of shoot and root growth in Douglas-fir seedlings   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. The short‐ and long‐term effects of photosynthate removal by sap‐sucking herbivores on plant growth were examined by experimentally manipulating densities of an aphid Cinara pseudotsugae (Wilson) on 2‐year‐old Douglas‐fir seedlings Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco under greenhouse conditions. An 18‐week test was conducted to determine short‐term effects. Effects of long‐term aphid feeding were examined by exposing seedlings to aphid feeding for two consecutive growing seasons. A third experiment evaluated the extent of recovery during 1 year following a single season of aphid feeding. At least 35 seedlings were used in each test. 2. Volume and dry weight of both shoots and roots decreased significantly with increasing aphid feeding in all three experiments. 3. The most significant and severe aphid effect was reduced root tissue density, suggesting carbohydrate depletion due to translocation from roots to shoots. 4. There was no sign of recovery, of either root or shoot growth, during the year following one season of feeding. 5. The results of this study indicate that short‐term feeding by aphids can affect plant growth and structure for a relatively long time.  相似文献

Natural 15N abundance values were measured in needles, twigs, wood, soil, bulk precipitation, throughfall and soil water in a Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) and a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand receiving high loads of nitrogen in throughfall (>50 kg N ha−1 year−1). In the Douglas fir stand δ15N values of the vegetation ranged between −5.7 and −4.2‰ with little variation between different compartments. The vegetation of the Scots pine stand was less depleted in 15N and varied from −3.3 to −1.2‰δ15N. At both sites δ15N values increased with soil depth, from −5.7‰ and −1.2‰ in the organic layer to +4.1‰ and +4.7‰ at 70 cm soil depth in the Douglas fir and Scots pine stand, respectively. The δ15N values of inorganic nitrogen in bulk precipitation showed a seasonal variation with a mean in NH4 +-N of −0.6‰ at the Douglas fir stand and +10.8‰ at the Scots pine stand. In soil water below the organic layer NH4 +-N was enriched and NO3 -N depleted in 15N, which was interpreted as being caused by isotope fractionation accompanying high nitrification rates in the organic layers. Mean δ15N values of NH4 + and NO3 were very similar in the drainage water at 90 cm soil depth at both sites (−7.1 to −3.8‰). A dynamic N cycling model was used to test the sensitivity of the natural abundance values for the amount of N deposition, the 15N ratio of atmospheric N deposited and for the intrinsic isotope discrimination factors associated with N transformation processes. Simulated δ15N values for the N saturated ecosystems appeared particularly sensitive to the 15N ratio of atmospheric N inputs and discrimination factors during nitrification and mineralization. The N-saturated coniferous forest ecosystems studied were not characterized by elevated natural 15N abundance values. The results indicated that the natural 15N abundance values can only be used as indicators for the stage of nitrogen saturation of an ecosystem if the δ15N values of the deposited N and isotope fractionation factors are taken into consideration. Combining dynamic isotope models and natural 15N abundance values seems a promising technique for interpreting natural 15N abundance values found in these forest ecosystems. Mortality and growth of self and outcross families of three wind-pollinated, mixed-mating, long-lived conifers, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), and noble fir (Abies procera) were followed from outplanting to age 26 (25 for noble fir) in spaced plantings at a common test site. Response to inbreeding differed greatly among species over time and in all regards. Only Douglas-fir and noble fir will be contrasted here, because ponderosa pine usually was intermediate to the other two in its response to inbreeding. In earlier reports, compared to noble fir Douglas-fir had a higher rate of primary selfing and larger inbreeding depression in seed set. Douglas-fir continued to have higher inbreeding depression in nursery and early field survival. The species differed in time courses of inbreeding depression in height and in allocation of growth due to crowding. Between ages 6 and 12, the relative elongation rate (dm · dm?1 · yr?1) of Douglas-fir was significantly greater in the selfs than in the outcrosses. The response was not observed in noble fir. At final measurement, inbreeding depression in diameter relative to inbreeding depression in height was greater in Douglas-fir than in noble fir. At final measurement inbreeding depression in height was inversely related to inbreeding depression in survival. Cumulative inbreeding depressions from time of fertilization to final measurement were 0.98, 0.94, and 0.83 for Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, and noble fir, respectively, which indicates that selfs will not contribute to the mature, reproductive populations.  相似文献

The occurrence of mature individuals of Pseudotsuga menziesii in stands of Arctostaphylos species mark the initial stages of mixed evergreen forest invasion into chaparral in central coastal California. We planted two cohorts of P. menziesii seeds at three sites under stands of two Arctostaphylos species and Adenostoma fasciculatum in order to determine whether first-year seedling emergence and survival, particularly during the regular summer drought, underlie the spatial distribution of mature trees observed in chaparral. Regardless of the chaparral species they were planted under, P. menziesii seeds that were not protected from vertebrate predation displayed very little emergence and no survival. In contrast, emergence of P. menziesii that were protected from vertebrate predators was much higher but still did not significantly differ among the three chaparral species. However, survival of protected seedlings under Arctostaphylos glandulosa was much greater than under A. fasciculatum, with intermediate survival under Arctostaphylos montana. While mortality of protected seedlings due to insect herbivory, fungal infection, and disturbance displayed no consistent patterns, summer drought mortality appeared to drive the patterns of survival of P. menziesii under the different chaparral species. These emergence, mortality, and survival data suggest that spatial patterns of P. menziesii recruitment in chaparral are driven by first-year summer drought seedling mortality, but only in years when seeds and seedlings are released from vertebrate predation pressure. Because the first-year drought mortality and survival patterns of P. menziesii seedlings differed strongly depending on the chaparral species, we examined the additional hypothesis that these patterns are associated with differences in the availability of soil moisture under different chaparral species. Both higher survival and lower drought mortality of P. menziesii seedlings were associated with higher soil water potential under Arctostaphylos stands during the summer drought, especially in the subsurface soil. The data suggest that Arctostaphylos stands, particularly stands of A. glandulosa, ameliorate xeric summer conditions to a degree that facilitates first-year establishment of P. menziesii and strongly influences spatial distribution of mature trees.
