Assessment of the conservation status of partridges and pheasants in South East Asia 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
The recent compilation of IUCN Action Plans for partridges and pheasants has highlighted the need for locality data to be used in conservation evaluation. Here we used locality data to measure changes in the proportion of localities from which each of 25 South East Asian species has been recorded, changes in their geographic extent and the amount of habitat that is potentially available to them. These are measures that use the data which are most readily available. Single landmass endemics from both montane and lowland forests appear to have fared badly with peacock pheasants Polyplectron and hill-partridges Arborophila suffering particularly large declines, although for montane forest species, these apparent declines are probably the result of relatively less survey effort in highland areas. Species previously widespread that give cause for concern include the green peafowl, Pavo muticus, and the blue-breasted quail, Coturnix chinensis. Conservation priorities include action on behalf of lowland forest specialists, some of which have suffered substantial reductions in the area of habitat that is potentially available. Surveys are required on the hills and mountains of Borneo, the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, and in the Lesser Sundas. Increased resolution of vegetation data would permit more accurate prediction of species ranges. 相似文献

To test the biochemical responsiveness of developing rat renal cortex to parathyroid hormone (PTH), intracellular concentrations of adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) were measured. Renal cortical slices from 10-day-, 20-day-, and 12-week-old animals contained higher concentrations of cyclic AMP when incubated in the presence of theophylline than in its absence. In the absence of theophylline, tissue from all three age groups responded to PTH with dose-dependent increases in cyclic AMP. In the presence of theophylline the response of tissue from 10-day-old animals was greater than that of 12-week-old animals.It is suggested that the differential effect of theophylline with respect to age may be the result of higher turnover rates of cyclic AMP in the young animals. 相似文献

Hamsters of the BIO 14.6 strain characteristically develop cardiomyopathy as they age, and hamsters of this strain have overt signs of heart failure by 11 months of age. Plasma levels of the posterior pituitary hormone arginine-vasopressin (AVP) were found to be elevated (approximately 2-fold) in 11 month old BIO 14.6 hamsters, compared to age-matched hamsters of a control strain. AVP appeared inappropriately elevated in these animals, since they were neither hyperosmotic nor markedly hypotensive. The elevated levels of AVP observed in these animals appears to contribute to vasomotor tone, since intravenous adminstration of a specific antagonist of the vasoconstrictor action of AVP [d(CH2)5Ome(TYR)AVP] elicited a fall in arterial pressure (9±2 mm Hg, n=6, p<0.05). The AVP antagonist had no effect on arterial pressure in hamsters of a control strain, and vehicle administration had no effect on arterial pressure in either strain. These data indicate that inappropriately elevated levels of AVP contribute to the cardiovascular state of myopathic hamsters. Since elevated plasma AVP has been noted in human congestive heart failure, these results suggest that AVP may contribute to the cardiovascular status during congestive heart failure. 相似文献

Brachypalpus (Brachypalpus) longifacies sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Eastern Asia (Russian Far East and Japan). It differs from other species of the nominative subgenus by several unusual characters, i.e. face in profile weakly convex dorsally and concave ventrally, antennae very elongated, and abdomen with reddish transversal maculae on 2nd tergum (male) or 2nd and 3rd terga (female). To clarify how the species diversity of highly dispersible parasites has developed, molecular phylogenetic analyses of Meteterakis spp., multi-host endoparasitic nematodes of reptiles and amphibians from the East Asian islands, were conducted. The results demonstrated the existence of two major clades, the J- and A-groups, with exclusive geographic ranges that are discordant with the host faunal province. However, diversification within the J-group was concordant with the host biogeography and suggested co-divergence of this group with vicariance of the host fauna. In contrast, the phylogenetic pattern within the A-group was discordant with host biogeography and implied diversification by repeated colonization. In addition, the mosaic distribution pattern of a J-group and an A-group species in the Japanese Archipelago, along with comparison of population genetic parameters and the genetic distance from their closest relatives, suggested the initial occurrence of a J-group lineage followed by exclusion in the western part of this region caused by invasion of an A-group lineage. Thus, the present study suggested that the species diversity of highly dispersible parasites including Meteterakis is formed not only by co-divergence with host faunal vicariance but also by peripatric speciation and exclusive interactions between species. 相似文献
