The effects of repeated annual application of methiocarb-based slug pellets, broadcast on the soil surface and drilled into the seed bed, on carabid beetle activity were investigated over a four year period on a winter-sown cereal field using pitfall traps in barriered plots. Following applications in late autumn all winter-active carabid populations were severely depressed; total carabid activity falling to less than 5% and 10–15% following broadcast and drilled applications, respectively, compared with untreated plots. Spring and summer-active species, not active at the time of application, were largely unaffected by applications and were responsible for a gradual recovery of total activity from early spring onwards. Activity of all affected winter species remained demonstrably depressed on treated areas for the remainder of their seasonal incidence. However, all except one species, Bembidion obtusum, recovered to normal activity levels in the following season prior to reapplication. Recovery patterns are discussed in terms of the known biology of the species involved. Evidence that a minority of summer-active species were also affected by treatments, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively, were attributed to indirect effects possibly involving prey availability and foraging behaviour. The long-term ecological and short-term agronomic implications of methiocarb effects on carabid populations in winter-sown cereals are discussed.  相似文献

The present study investigated the hypothesis that a strong extremely low frequency magnetic field partially suppresses the synthesis of melatonin and subsequently elevates the core body temperature. Seven healthy young men (16-22 years) took part in a control and in an exposure session. Three men experienced first the control and then the exposure session, four men experienced the sessions in reverse order. Control sessions were performed as constant routines, where the participants spent 24 hour periods continuously in bed while air temperature was 18 degrees C, illumination less than 30 lux, and the sound pressure level 50 dBA. The exposure sessions differed from that protocol only between 6 pm and 2 am when a strong extremely low frequency magnetic field was continuously applied (16.7 Hz, 0.2 mT). Assuming that the participants were unable to perceive the field consciously, they were blind against the actual condition. Salivary melatonin levels were determined hourly; body core temperatures and heart rates were registered continuously throughout. Neither of these parameters revealed alterations that can be related to the influence of the magnetic field. The present results, taken together with other investigations using that particular field, lead to the hypothesis that the effects most likely, occur, only after repetitive exposures to intermittent fields.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Most of what is known about parasitoid behaviour comes from laboratory observations: field quantitative observations on searching parasitoids are extremely difficult to do and are rare. The basic components of Aphytis melinus 's response to California red scale ( Aonidiella aurantii ) were studied in the laboratory: encounter, rejection, drumming, probing, oviposition, and host-feeding. It was then asked whether these observations provided a reliable guide to behaviour in the field in a situation that was very different from the laboratory.
2. Field observations were carried out on bark on the trunk and interior branches of trees where live scale density is extremely high in patches, dead scale make up 90% of all scale, and could be expected to interfere with Aphytis search.
3. The laboratory observations predicted well the time taken in the field for each basic event (drumming or probing) and average times spent on a scale. Also well predicted were the distributions of times spent on drumming, probing, and total time on a scale. Rejection rates were much higher in the field. Thus, the laboratory studies predicted foraging behaviour in the field with variable success; potential explanations for observed mismatch between laboratory and field and its possible larger implications are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of an inhomogeneous magnetic field on narrow erythrocyte streams in a wide and transparent laminar buffer flow were studied. The stream line of erythrocytes containing paramagnetic hemoglobin showed distinct displacement toward the stronger magnetic field. The displacement increased in the order, oxygenated erythrocytes (no displacement), erythrocytes containing cyanomethemoglobin, deoxygenated erythrocytes, erythrocytes containing methemoglobin in the high spin state; more precisely the displacement was proportional to the square of the paramagnetic moment of hemoglobin contained in the erythrocytes. In addition, the displacement was proportional to the product of the magnetic flux density and its gradient, and approximately proportional to the hematocrit of the flowing-erythrocyte suspension, and was much larger than that calculated for a single erythrocyte. These phenomena could be successfully interpreted by the interaction of paramagnetic erythrocytes with the inhomogeneous magnetic field, the resistance force (Stokes Law) from the bulk water, and the hydrodynamic interaction between erythrocytes.  相似文献

Brain metabolism and intracellular pH were studied during and after episodes of ischaemia and hypoxia-ischaemia in lambs anaesthetised with sodium pentobarbitone. 31P and 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy methods were used to monitor brain pHi and brain concentrations of Pi, phosphocreatine (PCr), beta--nucleoside triphosphate (beta NTP), and lactate. Simultaneous measurements were made of cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygen and glucose consumption. Cerebral ischaemia sufficient to reduce oxygen delivery to 75% of control values was associated with a fall in brain pHi and increase in brain Pi. Progressively severe hypoxia-ischaemia was associated with a progressive fall in brain pHi, PCr, and beta NTP and increase in brain Pi. In two animals the increase in brain lactate during hypoxia-ischaemia measured by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) could be quantitatively accounted for by the increased net uptake of glucose by the brain in relation to oxygen, but was insufficient to account for the concomitant acidosis according to previous estimates of brain buffering capacity. In four animals brain pHi, PCr, Pi, and beta NTP had returned to normal 1 h after the hypoxic-ischaemic episode. In one animal brain pHi had reverted to normal at a time when 1H NMR indicated persistent elevation of brain lactate.  相似文献

The hypothesis of optimal host species selection predicts that when a parasitoid has the choice between two host species, it will choose the species thay gives the best survival chances for its progeny. We confirmed this hypothesis by laboratory experiments with Leptopilina boulardi Barb. et al., a cynipid parasitoid which prefers Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (the host species most suitable for parasitoid survival) above D. simulans Sturt. As far as fitness parameters are concerned, the fertility of L. boulardi is higher with D. melanogaster; the egg laying can be spread out over a long period when this host is relatively scarce. This does not occur with D. simulans in which parasitic oviposition stops soon when this host is not abundant.Investigations of this foraging strategy were done under more complex natural conditions. We found that L. boulardi has a type III functional response with D. melanogaster only; furthermore, it seems that a switching effect may exist with this host. Parasitoid females appear to distribute their eggs more regularly on D. melanogaster, thus avoiding superparasitism. This seems to be independent of the relative frequency of this host. However, superparasitism of D. simulans did occur more frequently when this host was scarce.
Stratégie de ponte de Leptopilina boulardi (hyménoptère parasite de drosophiles) dans les conditions naturelles
Résumé Le concept de réponse optimale d'un parasite vis-à-vis de l'hôte le plus favorable pour son développement demeure surtout théorique et n'a pu être vérifié que dans les conditions de laboratoire. Nous avons montré que Drosophila melanogaster s'avère être, par rapport à D. simulans, l'hôte le plus favorable pour le développement du cynipide parasite Leptopilina boulardi. Une étude sur le terrain a démontré que ce parasite présente une réponse fonctionnelle densité dépendante vis-à-vis de D. melanogaster et non vis-à-vis de D. simulans, avec un effet de bascule. D'autre part, il s'avère que ce parasite exploite beaucoup mieux son hôte, en évitant le superparasitisme, ceci étant démontré au laboratoire et dans la nature. Enfin, il apparaît qu'il est capable d'allonger sa période de ponte lorsque cet hôte est rare, ce qui ne se produit pas avec D. simulans.

Acidic inorganic phosphate (Pi) pool (pH around 6) was detected besides the cytoplasmic pool in intact cells of Chlorella vulgaris 11h by 31P-in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It was characterized as acidic compartments (vacuoles) in combination with the cytochemical technique; staining the cells with neutral red and chloroquine which are known as basic reagents specifically accumulated in acidic compartments. Under various conditions, the results obtained with the cytochemical methods were well correlated with those obtained from in vivo NMR spectra; the vacuoles were well developed in the cells at the stationary growth phase where the acidic Pi signal was detected. In contrast, cells at the logarithmic phase in which no acidic Pi signal was detected contained only smaller vesicles that accumulated these basic reagents. No acidic compartment was detected by both cytochemical technique and 31P-NMR spectroscopy when the cells were treated with NH4OH. The vacuolar pH was lowered by the anaerobic treatment of the cells in the presence of glucose, while it was not affected by the external pH during the preincubation ranging from 3 to 10. The response ofCicer arietinum to inoculation withGlomus versiforme under field conditions was investigated in a phosphorus deficient sandy loam soil. Inoculation with the mycorrhizal fungusGlomus versiforme increased the rate of VAM development in chickpea. The weight of nodules and the number of nodules per plant were higher in inoculated than in uninoculated plants. The phosphorus content of the shoots and its total uptake, were increased by either the application of single super-phosphate, or by inoculation withG. versiforme. Inoculation increased shoot dry weights and grain yields by 12% and 25% respectively, as compared with the 33% and 60% increases respectively produced by P-treated plants.  相似文献

Differences in water binding were measured in the leaf cells ofMesembryanthemum crystallinum L. plants grown under high-salinity conditions by using nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) imaging. The 7-Tesla proton NMR imaging system yielded a spatial resolution of 20·20·100 m3. Images recorded with different spin-echo times (4.4 ms to 18 ms) showed that the water concentrations in the bladder cells (located on the upper and lower leaf surface), in the mesophyll cells and in the water-conducting vessels were nearly identical. All of the water in the bladder cells and in the water-conducting vessels was found to be mobile, whilst part of the water in the mesophyll cells was bound. Patches of mesophyll cells could be identified which bound water more strongly than the surrounding mesophyll cells. Optical investigations of leaf cross-sections revealed two types of mesophyll cells of different sizes and chloroplast contents. It is therefore likely that in the small-sized mesophyll cells water is strongly bound. A long-term asymmetric water exchange between the mesophyll cells and the bladder cells during Crassulacean acid metabolism has been described in the literature.
