A series of cellular-automata (CA) models have been created, simulating relationships between water (or aqueous solutions) and solid surfaces of differing hydropathic (i.e., hydrophilic or hydrophobic) nature. Both equilibrium- and dynamic-flow models were examined, employing simple breaking and joining rules to simulate the hydropathic interactions. The CA simulations show that water accumulates near hydrophilic surfaces and avoids hydrophobic surfaces, forming concave-up and concave-down meniscuses, resp., under equilibrium conditions. In the dynamic-flow simulations, the flow rate of water was found to increase past a wall surface as the surface became less hydrophilic, reaching a maximum rate when the solid surface was of intermediate hydropathic state, and then declining with further increase in the hydrophobicity of the surface. Solution simulations show that non-polar solutes tend to achieve higher concentrations near hydrophobic-wall surfaces, whereas other hydrophobic/hydrophilic combinations of solutes and surfaces do not show such accumulations. The intraspecific diversity in L. tsangchanensis collected in the Chinese Provinces Yunnan and southwestern Sichuan was studied by chemical and genetic approaches. The samples collected in Yunnan were found to contain cacalol (1) as the sole major component, while samples from Sichuan contained 7alpha- and 7beta-eremophila-9,11-dien-8-one (5 and 6) as well as the 3alpha-angeloyloxy derivative 7 as major components. In addition, the sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITSs) of the ribosomal RNA gene indicated that the Yunnan and the Sichuan samples constitute separate clades. In these studies, butanol (acetone butanol ethanol or ABE) was produced from wheat straw hydrolysate (WSH) in batch cultures
using Clostridium beijerinckii P260. In control fermentation 48.9 g L−1 glucose (initial sugar 62.0 g L−1) was used to produce 20.1 g L−1 ABE with a productivity and yield of 0.28 g L−1 h−1 and 0.41, respectively. In a similar experiment where WSH (60.2 g L−1 total sugars obtained from hydrolysis of 86 g L−1 wheat straw) was used, the culture produced 25.0 g L−1 ABE with a productivity and yield of 0.60 g L−1 h−1 and 0.42, respectively. These results are superior to the control experiment and productivity was improved by 214%. When
WSH was supplemented with 35 g L−1 glucose, a reactor productivity was improved to 0.63 g L−1 h−1 with a yield of 0.42. In this case, ABE concentration in the broth was 28.2 g L−1. When WSH was supplemented with 60 g L−1 glucose, the resultant medium containing 128.3 g L−1 sugars was successfully fermented (due to product removal) to produce 47.6 g L−1 ABE, and the culture utilized all the sugars (glucose, xylose, arabinose, galactose, and mannose). These results demonstrate
that C. beijerinckii P260 has excellent capacity to convert biomass derived sugars to solvents and can produce over 28 g L−1 (in one case 41.7 g L−1 from glucose) ABE from WSH. Medium containing 250 g L−1 glucose resulted in no growth and no ABE production. Mixtures containing WSH + 140 g L−1 glucose (total sugar approximately 200 g L−1) showed poor growth and poor ABE production.

BackgroundInherited heart disease is becoming a substantial part of everyday cardiology practice while genetic counselling still only takes place at university hospitals. In this study we review our seven-year experience with cardiogenetic counselling in a non-university hospital. MethodsRetrospective analysis of patient records. ResultsA total number of 83 index patients were counselled. In 65 patients DNA tests were performed, resulting in 26 positive tests. In all patients with genotype confirmation of hereditary cardiovascular disease and in 32 families without a molecular diagnosis, family screening was advised. Out of 120 subsequently tested family members, 47 molecular genetic diagnoses were confirmed. ConclusionAlthough the number of patients reviewed was small, our data show that cardiogenetic diseases are part of daily cardiology practice. We believe counselling should be performed in more general hospitals. There are, however, special subtle demands in the treatment of these patients. A fundamental puzzle about human behavior is low investment in preventive health inputs. Present-biased preferences have frequently been put forth as a theoretical explanation for this, but with limited empirical evidence supporting it, especially in developing countries. We extend our previous analysis of a field experiment testing advertising strategies to increase demand for a potentially life-saving preventive health technology, voluntary medical male circumcision. Offering compensation of US$10 conditional on a complement to the procedure, a short counseling session at a providing clinic, tripled uptake of the procedure. This is consistent with the idea that subsidizing a complement encouraged procrastinating men with latent demand to invest in preventive health. In addition, framing the basic advertisement using the statement “Are you tough enough?” doubled uptake. 相似文献

Habitat banking in its many iterations is an established and popular mechanism to deliver environmental offsets. The United States can look back at over 30 years of banking experience with the underlying framework and policies being consistently updated and improved. Given the increased demand in habitat banking, we provide insights into how bank area capacity is distributed across the United States for four different bank targets (wetlands, streams, multiple ecosystems, species) based on information extracted from the Regulatory In-lieu Fee and Bank Information Tracking System, as well as, estimating future capacities and area reserves through a predictive modeling approach based on data from the past 26 years. Future predictions indicate a decrease in available reserves for banks targeting wetlands or multiple ecosystems, with potential bottlenecks relating to large reserves being limited to the southeast and release schedules not catching up to the current and anticipated demand. Banks targeting species or streams are predicted to meet future demand, with species banks (conservation banks) following a different legislative and operational approach based on the listing of endangered species and pro-active approaches with anticipated future demand. Most current reserves for all four bank types are restricted to very few service areas with around one-third of all bank areas still awaiting release, limiting their availability on a broader scale. Strategic planning networks are necessary to meet future demand on a national scale and to identify areas suitable for banking or likely to experience future environmental or developmental stress. 相似文献
