Recently there has been a resurgence of theoretical papers exploring Wright's Shifting Balance Theory (SBT) of evolution. The SBT explains how traits which must pass through an adaptive valley may evolve in substructured populations. It has been suggested that Phase III of the SBT (the spread of new advantageous traits through the populations) proceeds only under a very restricted set of conditions. We show that Phase III can proceed under a much broader set of conditions in models that properly incorporate a key feature of Wright's theory: local, random migration of discrete individuals.  相似文献

Podocytes are unique cells that are decisively involved in glomerular filtration. They are equipped with a complex process system consisting of major processes and foot processes whose function is insufficiently understood (Mundel, P., and W. Kriz. 1995. Anat. Embryol. 192:385–397). The major processes of podocytes contain a microtubular cytoskeleton. Taking advantage of a recently established cell culture system for podocytes with preserved ability to form processes (Mundel, P., J. Reiser, A. Zúñiga Mejía Borja, H. Pavenstädt, G.R. Davidson, W. Kriz, and R. Zeller. 1997b. Exp. Cell Res. 36:248–258), we studied the functional significance of the microtubular system in major processes. The following data were obtained: (a) Microtubules (MTs) in podocytes show a nonuniform polarity as revealed by hook-decoration. (b) CHO1/ MKLP1, a kinesin-like motor protein, is associated with MTs in podocytes. (c) Treatment of differentiating podocytes with CHO1/MKLP1 antisense oligonucleotides abolished the formation of processes and the nonuniform polarity of MTs. (d) During the recovery from taxol treatment, taxol-stabilized (nocodazole- resistant) MT fragments were distributed in the cell periphery along newly assembled nocodazole-sensitive MTs. A similar distribution pattern of CHO1/MKLP1 was found under these circumstances, indicating its association with MTs. (e) In the recovery phase after complete depolymerization, MTs reassembled exclusively at centrosomes. Taken together, these findings lead to the conclusion that the nonuniform MT polarity in podocytes established by CHO1/MKLP1 is necessary for process formation.  相似文献

The deleterious effect of the ageing phenomenon of turbot spermatozoa was investigated in relation to the sampling date. Spermatozoa with a low or highly condensed chromatin and a middle piece containing numerous or a few vesicles were observed simultaneously 80 and 47 days before the beginning of the spawning period of the females. The middle piece of spermatozoa contained few vesicles, 39 days after the end of the reproductive period. At the same date, some spermatozoa appeared in which the plasma membrane was broken. Sperm motility, assessed just after collection in terms of arbitrary motility scores from 0 to 5, was significantly increased both at 10 and 60 s post-activation, for samples collected 18 days after, 25 days before and 9 days after the beginning of the spawning period of the females, respectively compared to samples collected 6 days before, 55 days after and 88 days after the end of this period. A lower short-term storage capacity was recorded at 10 and 60 s post-activation for sperm samples collected 6 days before and 88 days after the end of the reproductive period, respectively compared to 18 days and 9 days after the beginning of the spawning period. At 60 s post-activation, a higher motility of thawed spermatozoa was observed for samples collected 5 days before the beginning of the spawning period (motility recovery index: 86.4 ± 19.4%) compared to 71 days after the end of this period (55.0 ± 12.0%). The fertilizing capacity of sperm samples collected 61 days after the end of the spawning season (66.1 ± 14.6%) was significantly lower than that recorded for samples collected 34 days after the beginning of the spawning period (75.2±9.6%). On the contrary, there was no significant decrease in endogenous ATP content (31 days after the beginning of the spawning period, 14.53 ± 0.84; 48 days after the end of this period, 10.75 ± 5.26 nmol 10? 8 spermatozoa). Furthermore, sperm concentration significantly increased between the same dates (respectively 3.3 ± 0.8–9.4±4.8×109 spermatozoa ml?1).  相似文献

The four-state simple carrier model (SCM) has been employed to describe facilitative transport of ligands across biological membranes. Two basic mechanisms have been invoked to account for carrier-mediated ligand translocation: (i) binding to a mobile carrier, and (ii) displacement determined by conformational changes of an integral protein. While translatory carriers may be accurately represented by a four-state diagram, it is unlikely that the transport process mediated by a complex membrane protein can be strictly described by the elementary SCM. The purpose of this article is to test whether facilitative transporters with a more complex kinetic design than the SCM can exhibit macroscopic kinetic properties indistinguishable from it. For this, I studied a ``general carrier model' (GCM), and evaluated whether the relevant kinetic parameters are subject to the same basic restrictions as in the SCM. The fundamental finding is that there is a general kinetic design embodied with SCM-like properties, that can be shared by many transporters. In particular, the classical SCM is shown here to represent a particular case of the GCM. A main conclusion of this work is therefore that the finding of a macroscopic SCM-like kinetic behavior for a particular process of facilitative transport does not represent a sufficient argument in favor of a particular type of mechanism, like the typical one involving a two-conformational single-site carrier. Spatial pattern changes in aboveground plant biomass in a grazing pasture   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Using gamma distribution and spatial autocorrelation, it was demonstrated that plant biomass per unit area of a pasture grazed by cattle exhibited two kinds of spatial heterogeneity: small-scale heterogeneity caused by grazing and large-scale heterogeneity caused by topography, land aspect, etc. For each of the 10 measurement times from May to August, 100 quadrats 50cm × 50cm were arranged along a straight line 50m long in a pasture, and the plants within the quadrats were harvested at the height of 3cm above the ground surface to measure the dry weight. The data were aggregated into frequency distributions, and gamma distribution and the parameter values were estimated. This analysis showed that with the progression of grazing the amount of biomass decreased and the degree of spatial heterogeneity in biomass, measured per 0.25m2, increased, and due to plant regrowth the trends were reversed. By rearranging the 100 biomass data in order of weight, it was suggested that plots with an extremely large biomass were not grazed by cattle and remained in the pasture. For the same data, variations of biomass along the straight line were divided into two parts based on the moving average: the spatial trend and the residuals which cannot be explained by the trend. In this analysis, 48–75% of the total spatial variation was explained by the trend along the straight line. Analysis using spatial autocorrelation for the actual biomass changes showed that the biomass changes within a range of about 10m on the straight line gave a positive correlation, which indicates a topographical trend in biomass. Spatial autocorrelation for residuals suggested that the spatial changes in biomass along the straight line followed a wave-like or checker-board pattern. Small-scale spatial heterogeneity in plant biomass may be caused by the uneven deposition of excreta by grazing animals, uneven use of the grassland by grazing animals, and uneven dispersal of plant seeds through faeces over the grassland. The possibility that such unevenness might accelerate energy flow in the grassland ecosystem and contribute to grassland sustainability is discussed.  相似文献

Sapling density, shoot growth, and sapling architecture were studied in five major canopy dominants both under closed canopy and gaps in a warm-temperate rainforest. The five species showed wide variations in distribution, shoot growth, and sapling architecture. Distylium racemosum and Quercus acuta had significantly higher sapling densities under closed canopy than in gaps. Castanopsis sieboldii and Machilus thunbergii had significantly higher sapling densities in gaps than under closed canopy. Quercus salicina showed no significant difference in sapling density between the two habitats. Under closed canopy, C. sieboldii and M. thunbergii had wider crowns than the other species. Distylium racemosum had the greatest number of terminal shoots among the species. Quercus acuta had a branchless small crown. Quercus salicina showed intermediate values in crown width, depth and the number of terminal shoots among the species. Distylium racemosum showed the greatest height-growth rate among the species under the closed canopy, but was the slowest in gaps. Castanopsis sieboldii and M. thunbergii showed the greatest height-growth rates among the species in gaps. Quercus salicina showed the slowest height-growth rates both under closed canopy and gaps. All of the five species showed low mortality under closed canopy. For the major canopy dominants: (i) sapling architecture may not be an important factor in determining mortality but it may be important for height-growth rate; and (ii) sprouting helps saplings to survive until gap formation and facilitates rapid growth in the gaps.  相似文献
