Heat tolerance is commonly determined by exposing organisms to increasing temperatures until they show symptoms of thermal stress or death. Here we carried out an experiment on a blenny species (Acantemblemaria hancocki; Pisces: Chaenopsidae) and reviewed the literature to evaluate the extent to which variations in the rate at which temperature is increased in experimental trials affects thermal tolerance of fishes. For the blenny species, we found that thermal tolerance decreases significantly from an intermediate heating rate of ∼1 °C/h towards quicker and slower heating rates. In the literature we found very few comparisons of thermal tolerance among heating rates (i.e. eight fish species) and although such comparisons were done over narrow ranges of heating rates, overall they appear to follow the pattern described for the blenny species. We discuss a variety of factors including variations in the levels of acclimation, energy use and body quality among heating rates as the causes for this pattern. However, available data are still limited and further research will be necessary to determine the generality and causes of the pattern we found here. Nevertheless, our results indicate the need for caution in the extrapolation of thermal tolerance data when assessing the tolerance of organisms to environmental phenomena that vary in their rates of warming.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the distribution of lead among the physical fractions and between the various chemical forms of urban street dust. In order to achieve this aim, street dust samples were collected from three major roads with high traffic volume and one minor road with a low traffic density in urban areas of Az Zarqa City, Jordan. The dust samples (N = 6 for each site) were split into two portions. One part was employed for physical size fractionation and the other portion for chemical and physical analyses. A sequential extraction procedure was used to determine Pb associated with various chemical and physical fractions. It was found that about half of the lead was associated with the carbonate fraction and Fe-Mn oxides were ranked second, followed by the exchangeable and organic fractions. A general trend of increasing lead levels with decreasing particle size in street dust was observed. The current study showed that leaded gasoline was the major source for the elevated lead levels in street dust. Therefore, for those countries still employing leaded gasoline, such as Jordan, substantial reductions in lead contamination of street dust and roadside soils could be achieved by prohibiting the use of Pb additives. Consequently, many health benefits could be expected for the entire population and especially for children. The accuracy of lead results was checked by periodic analysis of SRM Soil 7. Observed concentrations were within 5% of certified value in analyzed SRM for lead.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the influence of several environmental factors on the viability and cell-adsorption for two Lactobacillus casei/paracasei bacteriophages (PL-1 and J-1). METHODS AND RESULTS: Both phages showed a remarkably high specificity of species, sharing similar host spectra. Two phages and four sensitive strains were used to conform five phage/strain systems. Each showed a particular behaviour (burst size: ranging from 32 to 160 PFU/infective centre; burst time: 120-240 min and latent time: 5-90 min). For both phages, the viability was not significantly affected from pH 4 to 11 (room temperature) and from pH 5 to 10 (37 degrees C). Adsorption rates were not influenced by calcium ions, but decreased after the thermal inactivation of cells. Adsorption rates were high between 0 and 50 degrees C with maximum values at 30 degrees C and pH 6. System PL-1/Lact. paracasei A showed noticeable differences in comparison with the others, being times required to reach 90% of adsorption of 4 h and lower than 45 min, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained in this work demonstrated that environmental parameters can influence the viability and cell adsorption rates of Lact. casei/paracasei phages. The extent of this influence was phage dependent. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This work contributes to the enlargement of the currently scarce knowledge of phages of probiotic bacteria.  相似文献

A lipase catalysed enantioselective hydrolysis process under in situ racemization of the remaining (R)-ibuprofen ester substrate with sodium hydroxide as the catalyst was developed for the production of S-ibuprofen from (R,S)-ibuprofen ester in isooctane. Detailed investigations on parameters study indicated that 0.5 M NaOH, addition of 20% (v/v) co-solvent (dimethyl sulphoxide), operating temperature of 45 °C, and 40 mmol/L substrate gave 86% conversion and 99.4% optical purity of S-ibuprofen in dynamic kinetic resolution. Meanwhile, in common enzymatic kinetic resolution process, only 42% conversion of the racemate and 93% enantiomeric excess of the product was obtained which are of lower values as compared to dynamic kinetic resolution. The S-ibuprofen produced during each process was evaluated and approximately 50% increment in concentration of S-acid product was produced when dynamic kinetic resolution was applied into the process.  相似文献

This note concerns a one locus, two allele, random mating diploid population, subject to frequency-dependent viability selection. It is already known that in such a population, any evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS), if only accessible by the genotype-to-phenotype mapping, is the phenotypic image of a stable genetic equilibrium (Eshel, I. 1982. Evolutionarily stable strategies and viability selection in Mendelian populations. Theor. Popul. Biol. 22(2), 204-217; Cressman et al. 1996. Evolutionary stability in strategic models of single-locus frequency-dependent viability selection. J. Math. Biol. 34, 707-733). The opposite is not true. We find necessary and sufficient parametric conditions for global convergence to the ESS, but we also demonstrate conditions under which, although a unique, genetically accessible ESS exists, there is another, "non-phenotypic" genetically stable equilibrium.  相似文献

This paper proposes mathematical models that predict the physiology, growth behavior and productivity of hybridoma cells in both batch and fed-batch systems. Murine hybridoma 130-8F producing anti-F-glycoprotein monoclonal antibody was employed as a model system. A systematic approach based on metabolic flux analysis (MFA) was utilized to yield a dynamic model for predicting the concentration of significant metabolites over time. Correlation analysis was performed to formulate a Biomass Model for predicting cell concentration and viability as a function of the extracellular metabolite concentrations. The coefficients of the model equation were estimated by employing the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm. The Metabolites Model was combined with the Biomass Model to get an Integrated Model capable of predicting concentration values for substrates, extracellular metabolites, and viable and dead cell concentration by utilizing only starting concentrations as input. The prediction accuracy of the model was tested by using experimental data.  相似文献

Aluminum-induced secretion of organic acids from the root apex has been demonstrated to be one major AI resistance mechanism in plants. However, whether the organic acid concentration is high enough to detoxify AI in the growth medium is frequently questioned. The genotypes of Al-resistant wheat, Cassia tora L. and buckwheat secrete malate, citrate and oxalate, respectively. In the present study we found that at a 35% inhibition of root elongation, the AI activities in the solution were 10, 20, and 50 μM with the corresponding malate, citrate, and oxalate exudation at the rates of 15, 20 and 21 nmol/cm2 per 12 h, respectively, for the above three plant species. When exogenous organic acids were added to ameliorate Al toxicity, twofold and eightfold higher oxalate and malate concentrations were required to produce the equal effect by citrate. After the root apical cell walls were isolated and preincubated in 1 mM malate, oxalate or citrate solution overnight, the total amount of AI adsorbed to the cell walls all decreased significantly to a similar level, implying that these organic acids own an equal ability to protect the cell walls from binding AI. These findings suggest that protection of cell walls from binding Al by organic acids may contribute significantly to AI resistance.  相似文献

A new chitosan derivative has been synthesized by crosslinking a metal complexing agent, [6,6′-piperazine-1,4-diyldimethylenebis (4-methyl-2-formyl) phenol] (L), with chitosan (CTS). The resulting material (CCTSL) was characterized by elemental (CHN), spectral (FTIR and solid-state NMR), thermal (TGA and DTA), and structural (powder XRD and SEM) analyses. Adsorption experiments (pH dependency, kinetics, and equilibrium) of CCTSL toward various metal ions such as Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) were carried out at 25 °C. The results showed that the adsorption was dependent on the pH of the solution, with a maximum capacity between pHs 6.5 and 8.5. The kinetics was evaluated by applying the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equation models and the equilibrium data were analyzed by Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1.21 mmol g−1 for Cu(II) and the order of adsorption capacities for the metal(II) ions studied was found to be Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Cd(II)  Co(II)  Mn(II)  Fe(II)  Pb(II).  相似文献
