Summary The flowering and fruiting patterns of the dioecious perennial herb Rubus chamaemorus L. were studied in frost-prone (open) and frost-sheltered (Shaded) habitats in northern Sweden over 6 years. The number of ramets with flower buds, the proportion of flower buds that opened, and fruit set varied markedly between years. In the frost-prone populations, the occurrence or absence of detrimental frosts during the development of flowers and fruit could explain much of the variation, both in the proportion of flower buds that developed into flowers, and in fruit set. In the frost-sheltered populations, most female flowers that did not develop into fruit aborted without any signs of physical damage and before any ovules had begun to enlarge. Flower mortality caused by herbivores feeding on reproductive parts was commonly low, but reached values higher than 10% in one of the shaded populations. Hand-pollination increased the proportion of ovules producing seeds in the mature fruits by about 20%, and in one year also increased fruit set significantly in one population. Fruit-producing female ramets had a higher mortality and a lower probability of flowering in the subsequent year than male ramets and non-fruiting female ramets. In R. chamaemorus, the conditions for fruit maturation are highly unpredictable at the time of flower initiation. It is suggested that the apparent over-initiation of flower buds is advantageous, as it allows the plant to attain a high reproductive success in years favourable for flowering and fruit development. 相似文献

Sodium acetate extractable P and P sorption were measured in a high P-sorbing Andept soil (Mission series) following incubation with Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum (L.)Nugaines) and red clover (Trifolium pratense (L.)Florex) plant residue. The effects of plant residue P content, moisture regime, and quantity added were evaluated over a twelve week incubation period. Increased extractable P and decreased P sorption occured when the P content of residue exceeded 0.1% P for both winter wheat and red clover. The extractable P decreased and the P sorbed increased for all treatments and the check as the incubation time progressed. Extractable P increased and P sorption decreased more under air dry moisture conditions than at –0.03 MPa or saturation. Extractable P levels increased and P sorption decreased with increasing amounts of added residue. The effects of the residue additions decreased with increasing incubation time. 相似文献

The juice of unripe fruit from a wild species of tomato, Lycopersicon peruvianum (L.) Mill., LA 107, contains over 50% of its soluble proteins as the sum of two proteinase inhibitors. These are the highest levels of proteinase inhibitors and highest percentage of soluble proteins as proteinase inhibitors of any plant or animal tissue found to date. Fruit of the modern tomato, L. esculentum Mill., contains only negligible quantities of the two inhibitors. The two proteinase inhibitors in the fruit of L. peruvianum are members of the Inhibitor I and II families previously found in potato tubers and in leaves of wounded potato and tomato plants. The levels of the two inhibitors in the unripe fruit decrease significantly during ripening. Unripe fruit from other wild Lycopersicon species such as L. parviflorum Rick, Kesicki, Fobes et Holle, L. hirsutum Humb. et Bonpe., L. pimpinellifolium Mill., and other lines of L. peruvianum contain moderate levels of the inhibitors that also decrease during ripening. Another wild tomato species, L. pennellii Corr., is similar to L. esculentum in not containing the two proteinase inhibitors in either unripe or ripe fruit. The transient levels of the inhibitors in fruit of wild species indicate that they are present in unripe fruit as defensive chemicals against insects, birds or small mammals and their disappearance during ripening may render them edible to facilitate seed dispersal. High levels of mRNAs coding for Inhibitors I and II in unripe fruit of L. peruvianum, LA 107, indicate that strong promoters may regulate the developmentally expressed proteinase-inhibitor genes in tomato fruit that may have a substantial potential for use in genetic-engineering experiments to enhance the production of large quantities of proteinase inhibitors or other proteins in field tomatoes.Abbreviations poly(A)+ mRNA

The role and source of gibberellins (GAs) involved in the development of parthenocarpic fruits of Pisum sativum L. has been investigated. Gibberellins applied to the leaf adjacent to an emasculated ovary induced parthenocarpic fruit development on intact plants. The application of gibberellic acid (GA3) had to be done within 1 d of anthesis to be fully effective and the response was concentration-dependent. Gibberellin A1 and GA3 worked equally well and GA20 was less efficient. [3H]Gibberellin A1 applied to the leaf accumulated in the ovary and the accumulation was related to the growth response. These experiments show that GA applied to the leaf in high enough concentration is translocated to the ovary. Emasculated ovaries on decapitated pea plants develop without application of growth hormones. When [3H] GA1 was applied to the leaf adjacent to the ovary a substantial amount of radioactivity accumulated in the growing shoot of intact plants. In decapitated plants, however, this radioactivity was mainly found in the ovary. There it caused growth proportional to the accumulation of CA1. Application of LAB 150978, an inhibitor of GA biosynthesis, to decapitated plants inhibited parthenocarpic fruit development and this inhibition was counteracted by the application of GA3 (either to the fruit, or the leaf adjacent to the ovary, or through the lower cut end of the stem). All evidence taken together supports the view that parthenocarpic pea fruit development on topped plants depends on the import of gibberellins or their precursors, probably from the vegetative aerial parts of the plant.Abbreviations FW

Glycerol induced a limitation on photosynthetic carbon assimilation by phosphate when supplied to leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). This limitation by phosphate was evidenced by (i) reversibility of the inhibition of photosynthesis by glycerol by feeding orthophosphate (ii) a decrease in light-saturated rates of photosynthesis and saturation at a lower irradiance, (iii) the promotion of oscillations in photosynthetic CO2 assimilation and in chlorophyll fluorescence, (iv) decreases in the pools of hexose monophosphates and triose phosphates and increases in the ratio of glycerate-3-phosphate to triose phosphate, (v) decreased photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, and increased non-photochemical quenching, specifically of the component which relaxed rapidly, indicating that thylakoid energisation had increased. In barley there was a massive accumulation of glycerol-3-phosphate and an increase in the period of the oscillations, but in spinach the accumulation of glycerol-3-phosphate was comparatively slight. The aim of this work was to examine the effect of abrupt changes in temperature in the range 5 to 30°C upon the rate of photosynthetic carbon assimilation in leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Measurement of the CO2-assimilation rate in relation to the intercellular partial pressure of CO2 at different temperatures and O2 concentrations and at saturating irradiance showed that as the temperature was decreased photosynthesis was saturated at progressively lower CO2 partial pressures and that the transition between the CO2-limited and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-regeneration-limited rate became more abrupt. Feeding of orthophosphate to leaves resulted in an increased rate of CO2 assimilation at lower temperatures at around ambient or higher CO2 partial pressures both in 20% O2 and in 2% O2 and it removed the abruptness in the transition between the CO2-limited and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-regeneration-limited rates. Phosphate feeding tended to inhibit carbon assimilation at higher temperatures. The response of carbon assimilation to temperature was altered by feeding orthophosphate, by changing the concentrations of CO2 or of O2 or by leaving plants in the dark at 4°C for several hours. Similarly, the response of carbon assimilation to phosphate feeding or to changes in 2% O2 was altered by leaving the plants in the dark at 4°C. Proteinase K, the extracellular serine endopeptidase (E.C. 3.4.21.14) from the fungus Tritirachium album limber, is homologous to the bacterial subtilisin proteases. The binding geometry of the synthetic inhibitor carbobenzoxy-Ala-Phechloromethyl Ketone to the active site of proteinase K was the first determined from a Fourier synthesis based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction data between 1.8 Å and 5.0 Å resolution. The protein inhibitor complexes was refined by restrained least-squares minimization with the data between 10.0 and 1.8 Å. The final R factor was 19.1% and the model contained 2,018 protein atoms, 28 inhibitors atoms, 125 water molecules, and two Ca2+ ions. The peptides portion of the inhibitor is bound to the active center of proteinase K by means of a three-stranded antiparallel pleated sheet, with the side chain of the phenylalanine located in the P1 site. Model building studies, with lysine replacing phenylalanine in the inhibitor, explain the relatively unspecific catalytic activity of the enzyme. 相似文献

Detailed examination of a sample plot covered by the Lindero membranaceae-Fagetum crenatae association on Mt. Sanpoiwadake,
Hakusan National Park, revealed a number of correlations between the distribution of subassociations and environmental factors.
The subassociations on the south-facing slopes receive deep snow cover in winter with rapid melting in the spring. They occur
on porous, freely draining soils, typical of the general range of brown forest soils. Conversely, on the north-eastern slopes
there are widespread late-snow patches which delay leaf development and expansion and which provide an abundant water supply
