Many studies have used the avian hemosporidians (Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium, and Hemoproteus) to test hypotheses of host–parasite co‐evolution, yet documented health and survival consequences of these blood parasites vary among studies and generalizations about their pathogenicity are debatable. In general, the negative effects of the hemosporidians are likely to be greatest during acute infections of young birds, yet most previous studies in wild passerines have examined chronic effects in adults. Here, we evaluated responses of nestling American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) to acute infection (prevalence and burden), as well as its short‐ and long‐term survival consequences. We used panel of nine hematological and biochemical parameters that are regularly used to evaluate the health of domestic animals, including leukocyte profiles, hematocrit, and plasma proteins. We assessed the effects of infection on survival in a mark‐recapture framework. Overall, 56% of crows (= 321 samples) were infected by at least one of the three genera. Infections by all genera were associated with elevated plasma proteins and globulins, which could indicate an adaptive immune response. However, only Plasmodium infections were associated with low hematocrit (anemia) and lower fledging success, possibly mediated by the negative effect of low hematocrit values on body condition. Moreover, early Plasmodium infection (<40 days of age) had long‐term survival implications: it was associated with lower apparent survival probability within 3 years after fledging. These results suggest that young crows mounted an adaptive immune response to all three genera. Short‐ and long‐term pathological effects, however, were only apparent with Plasmodium infections.  相似文献

Abstract: This study was carried out to analyze the extracellular levels of Met-enkephalin-like material in the nucleus accumbens, a brain structure involved in the effects of opioids on motor activity and reward processes, using microdialysis in awake and freely moving rats, combined with a sensitive radioimmunoassay. The levels of Met-enkephalin-like material were measured after administration of a dual inhibitor of enkephalin-degrading enzymes, RB101, to evaluate its in vivo protecting effects. The basal levels of Met-enkephalin-like immunoreactivity in the nucleus accumbens were ∼1.2 pg/30 min or 2.2 fmol/30 min (37 p M ). Perfusion of KCl (100 m M ) produced a 17-fold increase in the level of Met-enkephalin-like material in this structure. During the 8-h perfusion, which started at 9 a.m., a spontaneous increase of the basal level of Met-enkephalin-like material in the nucleus accumbens occurred between 4 and 4:30 p.m., suggesting the existence of variation in opioid peptide secretion, at least in this structure. Intraperitoneal injection of RB101 induced a dose-dependent and long-lasting (210-min) increase in the extracellular levels of Met-enkephalin-like material. A prolonged effect was also observed in the behavioral studies in which the inhibitor increased global motor activity of rats 210 min after injection. These data represent the first direct evidence that dual inhibitors of enkephalin-degrading enzymes increase in vivo the extracellular levels of Met-enkephalin-like material in awake and freely moving rats.  相似文献

Experiments were done under controlled environment and glasshouse conditions to study the effects of inoculum concentration, leaf age and wetness period on the development of dark leaf and pod spot (Alternaria brussicae) on oilseed rape (Brassica napus). On leaves of potted oilseed rape plants (cv. Bienvenu) inoculated with A. brassicae conidial suspensions, the severity (number of lesions cm-2) of dark leaf spot increased as inoculum concentration increased from 80 to 660 spores ml-1and as leaf age increased from 4 to 14 days. On pods on detached racemes of spring oilseed rape (cv. Starlight), the incidence of dark pod spot (% of pods diseased) increased as inoculum concentration increased from 80 to 104spores ml-1. Increasing inoculum concentration above 104spores ml-1did not increase the incidence but did increase the severity of dark pod spot. A minimum wetness period of 4 h was needed for infection of oilseed rape leaves (cv. Envol) by A. brussicue at 18°C and disease severity increased with increasing wetness period up to 12 h. The length of dry interruptions after 3–8 h of initial wetness affected the severity of dark leaf spot. A second wetness period increased the severity of dark leaf spot if the dry interruption was ≤ 6 h and if the first wetness period was ≤ 8 h. The incubation period of A. brassicae decreased from 3.5 to 2.5 days as inoculum concentration increased from 80 to 660 spores ml-on leaves (cv. Bienvenu) at 17–25°C and from 3.8 to 1.0 day as inoculum concentration increased from 80 to ≥2 ≥ 103spores ml-1on pods (cv. Starlight) at 18°C.  相似文献

Potato virus X (PVX) isolates were obtained from a simple seed potato production scheme or from ware potatoes produced by seed potatoes obtained from it. In this scheme, PVX infection is widespread in seed stocks and most of the potatoes grown lack PVX resistance genes. Thirteen PVX isolates were typed to strain group by inoculation to potato cultivars containing different combinations of hypersensitivity genes Nx and Nb. Six failed to overcome either gene and therefore belonged to strain group 1, four overcame Nb only and were placed in strain group 3 and three were mixtures of the two. All 13 isolates failed to overcome extreme resistance/immunity gene Rx. Naturally infected cultivars of genotype nx.nb contained strain group 1 alone or strain groups 1 and 3, while those of genotype nx:Nb contained only strain group 3. The widespread occurrence of strain group 1 contrasts with the predominant occurrence of strain group 3 in potatoes in the UK. However, it resembles the UK situation before sophisticated seed potato production schemes were introduced and before PVX hypersensitivity genes Nx and Nb were deliberately exploited in potato breeding. Prior infection with potato leafroll virus (PLRV) did not affect expression of hypersensitivity to PVX in inoculated leaves of an nx:Nb genotype.  相似文献

Strains of Bradyrhizobium formed nodule-like structures on Arabidopsis and species of Brassica in pots with sandvermiculite and in glass tubes on a nitrogen-free mineral salts agar. Broad-host-range Rhizobium strains NGR234 from Lablab purpureus and NGR76 from Phaseolus vulgaris formed similar nodule-like structures on Brassica spp. The size of these structures on plants in pots were large, often reaching 10 mm in diameter.The frequency of inoculated Brassica plants in pots with nodule-like structures was 25–50%, depending on the inoculum strain. The inheritable nature of factors involved in the formation of the nodule-like structures was demonstrated when the structures occurred on 100% of inoculated B. napus seedlings derived from plants with the nodule-like structures.Nodule-like structures occurred without, but not with, the application of a cellulase-pectolyase-PEG treatment to the roots. Attempts to isolate Bradyrhizobium or Rhizobium from the nodule-like structures failed. Internal infection of these structures could not be detected using either the light or electron microscope. The inoculum strains of root-nodule bacteria were detected in high numbers in the rhizosphere of plants 5 months after inoculation. On agar plates bacterial colonies could be seen, with undiminished growth, over the surface of the agar extending to the root surface. However, ground root tissue of Brassica was toxic to Bradyrhizobium strains. This suggested that Bradyrhizobium strains would not survive after infecting the roots of Brassica spp. Nitrogen fixation was associated with high rhizosphere populations of Azospirillum and not with Bradyrhizobium induced nodule structures of Brassica spp.  相似文献

The perennial herb Leucanthemum vulgare (oxeye daisy) has a dual induction requirement for flowering. The primary induction is a typical low temperature vemalization response. Temperatures up to 15°C are effective, and the optimum is 6–9°C. Short days (SD) during low temperature exposure enhanced primary induction, but SD could not fully substitute for low temperature in primary induction. At optimum temperatures about 6 weeks exposure were required for 100% flowering, but the flowering response increased with increasing exposure up to 12 weeks, especially at higher temperatures. Seedling have a short juvenile phase of about 4 weeks. Populations with origin ranging from 59 to 69°N in Norway did not vary in their primary induction requirements. Long days (LD) were required for inflorescence initiation and stem elongation at 9°C. At 21 and 15°C some plants initiated and developed inflorescences in SD, but the inflorescences were sessile and their development strongly delayed. More than 16 LD cycles were required for normal stem elongation (bolting).  相似文献

反复呼吸道感染(RRI)在幼儿中较为常见。本文对40例RRI患儿口咽部菌群进行了定性、定量、定位检测。结果表明,需氧菌细菌群密度为2.1635±0.5047。32例分离出两种以上需氧菌、以奈瑟氏菌和肺炎链球菌为多见,共检出9种需氧菌,70株,6种厌氧菌,39株。药敏试验表明,几种致病菌对青霉素等抗生素较敏感,而对红霉素、庆大霉素敏感率较低。  相似文献

Abstract Eleven zymodemes of Leishmania infantum were identified among 38 parasite stocks isolated from Italian HIV-positive patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Only one zymodeme is a common agent of Mediterranean VL in HIV-negative individuals, five zymodemes usually cause simple, self-resolving cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), and five belong to unique genotypes which have not been previously reported from either VL or CL cases in immunocompetent individuals. This last group of parasites showed reassortaient patterns within electromorphs frequently observed in dermotropic L. infantum zymodemes. The highest zymodeme heterogeneity was found in south Italy (Sicily), with six zymodemes identified among 12 HIV-positive patients surveyed.  相似文献

A dual-wavelength fluorimeter was constructed, which used two light emitting diodes (LEDs) to excite the fluorescence dye RH 421 alternately with two different wavelengths. The ratio of the emissions at the two excitation wavelengths provided a drift-insensitive signal, which allowed detection of very small changes of the fluorescence intensity. Those small changes were induced by ion binding and release in conformation E1 of the Na,K-ATPase. Titration experiments were performed to determine equilibrium dissociation constants (± standard deviation) for each step in the complete binding and release sequence: 0.12 ± 0.01 mM (E2(K2) KE1), 0.08 ± 0.01 mM (KE1 E1), 3.0 ± 0.2 mM (NaE1 E1), 5.2 ± 0.4 mM (Na2E1 NaE1) and 6.5 ± 0.4 mM (Na3E1 Na2E1) at pH 7.2 and T=16°C. These numbers show that the affinities of the binding sites exposed to the cytoplasm, are higher for K+ than for Na+ ions, similar to what was found on the extracellular side. The physiological requirement for extrusion of Na+ from the cytoplasm, and for import of K+ from the extracellular medium seems to be facilitated not by favorable binding affinities in state E1 but by the two ATP-driven reaction steps of the cycle, E2(K2) + ATP K2E1 · ATP and Na3E1 · ATP (Na3) El-P, which border the ion exchange reactions at the binding sites in conformation E1.
