Abstract Aposematic colours may warn predators that an individual or species is chemically defended and unpalatable. This study examines a diurnal Australian whistling moth, Hecatesia exultans (Noctuidae, Agaristinae) where adults, although cryptic at rest, display their bright orange, yellow and black colouration in flight. Aposematically coloured larvae feed mainly on Cassytha, a parasitic vine that contains aporphine alkaloids. Alkaloids isolated from the plants and moths were analysed for the presence of these compounds. While alkaloids were found in the stomach and frass of 18 moth larvae, no alkaloids were present in the body and similarly no alkaloids were detected from 65 adult male moths collected from three widely separated populations. We conclude that the larvae and adults do not sequester alkaloids. Lycosid spiders and singing honeyeaters ( Lichenostomtus virescens ) were used to assess the palatability of H. exultans adults. The spiders and the birds consumed all adult moths. Adult moths appear to avoid predation by employing quick flights with rapid changes of direction and, while the adults are brightly coloured, they are not chemical defended. 相似文献

Pre-purified enzymes isolated from Catharanthus roseus suspension cultures synthesize strictosidine and cathenamine from tryptamine and secologanin. Whereas strictosidine showed metabolic activity, cathenamine accumulates during the cell-free incubations in the absence of reduced pyridine nucleotides. In the presence of δ-d-gluconolactone (0.1 M), strictosidine accumulates in a yield of ca 50%. Optimum conditions for its accumulation in crude extracts were found to be at pH 4.1, 0.25 mM tryptamine and 1.25 mM secologinin. Strictosidine synthase is stable for more than 1.5 months at 4°. The optimum conditions for the enzymatic synthesis of cathenamine are 1.54 mM tryptamine and 7.7 mM secologanin at pH 7.5. In the presence of NH4+ the formation of the latter alkaloid decreases due to the synthesis of unidentified compounds. 相似文献

A comprehensive GC-MS analysis of 8 Ipomoea species belonging to the subgenus Quamoclit, section Mina revealed that the members of this taxon form combinations of two necine bases with rare necic acids resulting in unique pyrrolizidine alkaloids. The occurrence and diversity of these metabolites show remarkable variations: Some species, especially Ipomoea hederifolia and Ipomoea lobata, are able to synthesize a large number of alkaloids whereas others, especially Ipomoea coccinea and Ipomoea quamoclit, are poor synthesizers with only a few compounds. However, these metabolites are apparently chemotaxonomic markers of this infrageneric taxon in general. They represent either esters of (-)-platynecine (altogether 48 ipangulines and 4 further esters including results of a previous study) or esters of (-)-trachelanthamidine, an additional novel structural type called minalobines (altogether 21 alkaloids). Both types are characterized by section-specific rare necic acids, e.g., ipangulinic/isoipangulinic acid, phenylacetic acid. The alkaloids of Ipomoea cholulensis, I. coccinea, I. hederifolia, Ipomoea neei, and Ipomoea quamoclit were mono and diesters of platynecine. Minalobines turned out to be metabolites of I. lobata (Cerv.) Thell. (syn.: Mina lobata Cerv.) lacking ipangulines. The major alkaloid of this species, minalobine R, has been isolated and identified as 9-O-(threo-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-3-phenylacetoxy-butyryl)-(-)-trachelanthamidine on the basis of spectral data. Apparently only two of the species included in this study, Ipomoea cristulata and Ipomoea sloteri, are able to synthesize both, ipangulines as well as minalobines. Minalobine O could be isolated as a major alkaloid of I. cristulata, its structure has been established as 9-O-(erythro-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-3-tigloyloxy-butyryl)-(-)-trachelanthamidine on the basis of spectral data. 相似文献

Hemlock (Conium maculatum L. Umbelliferae) has long been known as a poisonous plant. Toxicity is due to a group of piperidine alkaloids of which the representative members are coniine and gamma-coniceine. The latter is the more toxic and is the first formed biosynthetically. Its levels in relation to coniine vary widely according to environmental conditions and to provenance of the plants. Surprisingly, these piperidine alkaloids have turned up in quite unrelated species in the monocotyledons as well as the dicotyledons. Aloes, for instance, important medicinal plants, are not regarded as poisonous although some species are very bitter. Nevertheless a small number of mostly local species contain the alkaloids, especially gamma-coniceine and there have been records of human poisoning. The compounds are recognized by their characteristic mousy smell. Both acute and chronic symptoms have been described. The compounds are neurotoxins and death results from respiratory failure, recalling the effects of curare. Chronic non-lethal ingestion by pregnant livestock leads to foetal malformation. Both acute and chronic toxicity are seen with stock in damp meadows and have been recorded as problems especially in North America. The alkaloids derive biosynthetically from acetate units via the polyketide pathway in contrast to other piperidine alkaloids which derive from lysine. 相似文献

The pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) content of flowers, leaves, and roots of Anchusa strigosa (Boraginaceae) was analysed by ESI-LC-MS. Six PAs, including two new natural compounds, were detected, characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and quantified in each plant organ. The results indicated that the highest total concentration of PAs was in the leaves (23.63 mg/g of dried part), followed by the flowers (19.77 mg/g), and finally by the roots (1.80 mg/g). All PAs isolated were subjected to Spodoptera exigua and Pieris brassicae larvae. Feeding activity by both herbivore species using a bioassay was inhibited up to circa 75% depending on PA and applied concentration. 相似文献

Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry has been used to analyse the alkaloids present in the aerial parts of Genista tenera. Anagyrine, cytisine, N-formylcytisine, N-methylcytisine and lupanine were the major compounds, the last two alkaloids being known for their hypoglycaemic activity. Dehydrocytisine, 5,6-dehydrolupanine, rhombifoline, aphylline and thermopsine were the minor alkaloids. The characterisation of the constituents was based on comparison of their Kovats retention indexes and electron impact-mass spectrometric data recorded on-line with those of reference compounds and literature data. 相似文献

The title compounds, (cinchonidinium)trichlorocobalt(II) [(C(19)H(23)ON(2))CoCl(3)] (CoCdn) and (quinidinium)trichlorocobalt(II) [(C(20)H(25)O(2)N(2))CoCl(3)] (CoQd), are zwitterions that differ in absolute configuration and conformation. In both complexes, the sp(3) nitrogen of quinuclidine is protonated, whereas the sp(2) nitrogen of quinoline is linked to the Co(II) atom, which coordinates three chlorine atoms in distorted tetrahedral geometry. The mutual orientations of the quinoline and quinuclidine moieties in CoCdn and CoQd differ significantly because of different hydrogen bonding involving the hydroxyl group. In both complexes, the quinuclidine NH groups and hydroxyl groups are hydrogen-bond donors to the chlorine atoms of Co(II) tetrahedra. In CoQd the hydrogen bonding leads to formation of a nine-membered ring consisting of Co, two chlorines, and a fragment of the quinidine molecule. A comparison of the crystal structures of four Cinchona alkaloid complexes with trichlorocobalt(II) shows that their space groups are determined by the absolute configuration of the alkaloid, whereas the hydrogen-bonding pattern is mainly affected by the substituent in the quinoline ring, i.e., by hydrogen or methoxyl group. 相似文献
