To investigate the variability in the reproductive tactics of Acıgöl killifish (Aphanius transgrediens), one of the most seriously threatened freshwater teleost species, this study compared its reproductive ecology in two contrasting habitats that differ substantially in terms of stability of environmental parameters, particularly salinity regime (stable vs. unstable). Fish were sampled monthly from October 2013 to September 2014 with the aim of testing whether the reproductive life-history response of fish to stable and unstable conditions differed. The reproductive effort (gonad weight) of both sexes did not differ significantly between the two habitats, but females in the unstable habitat had significantly lower fecundity and larger eggs. The relationship between fecundity and fish size was stronger in the stable habitat, whereas the relationship was quite variable and uncertain in the unstable habitat. Fish born in the unstable habitat reached their first maturity at a smaller size than those in the stable habitat. The gonado-somatic index and the duration of hydrated eggs showed that reproduction continued from February to May in both habitats; nonetheless, a second spawning event occurred during July and August in the unstable habitat, which included the reproductive contributions of YOY individuals and older generations. This study’s results suggest that A. transgrediens employs varying reproductive strategies against environmental instability in its restricted unique range. This may have further implications for the ways in which habitat-specific conservation methods are used. 相似文献

Vascular epiphyte species exclusively, or at least primarily, germinate and grow on other plants without contact with the soil and, in contrast to mistletoes, without parasitizing their hosts. The last review of the systematic distribution of this diverse group of plants dates back more than two decades. The present study pursues three major goals: (1) it critically discusses conceptual problems arising from the distinction of epiphytes from non‐epiphytes; (2) it presents a compilation of epiphytic diversity derived from a vast number of sources; and (3) it arranges epiphyte diversity in an up‐to‐date taxonomic framework. The resulting compilation, which identifies 27 614 species of vascular epiphytes (including primary hemiepiphytes) representing 913 genera in 73 families, or approximately 9% of extant vascular plant diversity, is meant to be an important tool for studies on the ecology and evolution of epiphytes, but also for comparative studies with a focus on other life forms. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

Spider densities are often low after winter in annual crops, and crop management decimates spider populations several times per year. Population recovery rates and phenology depend on reproductive and development rates, which in turn are driven largely by temperature. We aimed to quantify the relationships between eggsac development rates and temperature in order to understand the relative value of different linyphiid species for the biological control of agricultural pests. Female adults of nine linyphiid species were collected from winter wheat in the UK over 3 years; Bathyphantes gracilis (Blackwall), Erigone atra (Blackwall), Erigone dentipalpis (Wider), Erigone promiscua O.P.‐Cambridge), Tenuiphantes tenuis (Blackwall) [formerly Lepthyphantes tenuis (Blackwall)], Meioneta rurestris (C.L. Koch), Oedothorax apicatus (Blackwall), Oedothorax fuscus (Blackwall), and Oedothorax retusus (Westring). These are agrobiont species that are dominant in agroecosystems. We tested how well development in the field can be predicted on the basis of laboratory experiments. We also built a simple phenology simulation model to test whether spider phenology in the field can be predicted by a general knowledge of the relationship between temperature and development rate. The relationships between temperature and development rates of eggsacs were not linear as described by a day‐degree model, but exponential as described by a biophysical model. Duration of the eggsac development period in the field was predicted accurately from laboratory experiments. We only found minor differences between development thresholds of eggsacs at constant temperatures compared with fluctuating temperatures. The phenology model predicted the phenology of L. tenuis and E. atra well, but the number of generations predicted for O. fuscus was not realised in the field. This suggests that development of this species may be affected by factors other than temperature. The methods used here could also be applied to other natural enemies, to determine whether their thermal biology is conducive to a role as biocontrol agents in disturbed agricultural systems. 相似文献

The evolution of epiphytes in Davalliaceae was investigated by field observations and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Field studies revealed that in Davalliaceae and related ferns, epiphytes in a broad sense are classified into climber, secondary hemi-epiphyte, and obligate epiphyte, based on combinations of the places (ground vs. tree) of inferred spore germination and sporophyte growth. Some species of Davalliaceae have multiple life forms, i.e. secondary hemi-epiphyte and obligate epiphyte, whereas others are obligate epiphytes. Phylogenetic trees obtained from rbcL and accD gene sequences supported that secondary hemi-epiphytic Oleandra is sister to the epiphytic Davalliaceae and polygrammoid ferns. Analyses of life form evolution based on the phylogenetic relationships suggested that obligate epiphytes of the Davalliaceae and polygrammoid ferns evolved from secondary hemi-epiphytes, or less likely from climbers. We hypothesized a scenario for the evolution of life forms in Davalliaceae and related groups that involves successive changes in rhizome habit, root function, and germination place. The beetle family Lampyridae (fireflies) encompasses ~100 genera worldwide with considerable diversity in life histories and signaling modes. Some lampyrid males use reproductive accessory glands to produce spermatophores, which have been shown to increase female lifetime fecundity. Sexual dimorphism in the form of neotenic and flightless females is also common in this family. A major goal of this study was to test a hypothesized link between female flight ability and male spermatophore production. We examined macroevolutionary patterns to test for correlated evolution among different levels of female neoteny (and associated loss of flight ability), male accessory gland number (and associated spermatophore production), and sexual signaling mode. Trait reconstruction on a molecular phylogeny indicated that flying females and spermatophores were ancestral traits and that female neoteny increased monotonically and led to flightlessness within multiple lineages. In addition, male spermatophore production was lost multiple times. Our evolutionary trait analysis revealed significant correlations between increased female neoteny and male accessory gland number, as well as between flightlessness and spermatophore loss. In addition, female flightlessness was positively correlated with the use of glows as female sexual signal. Transition probability analysis supported an evolutionary sequence of female flightlessness evolving first, followed by loss of male spermatophores. These results contribute to understanding how spermatophores have evolved and how this important class of seminal nuptial gifts is linked to other traits, providing new insights into sexual selection and life-history evolution. 相似文献

Cercopithifilaria johnstoni (Nematoda:Filarioidea) occurs in the subcutaneous connective tissues of a spectrum of native murid and marsupial hosts in Eastern Australia. Life cycle studies revealed that: (i) microfilaria occur in lymphatic capillaries and extravascular connective tissue of the dermis (= ‘skin-inhabiting’), (ii) ixodid ticks, particularly Ixodes trichosuri, are intermediate hosts in nature, (iii) development from microfilariae to infective third-stage larva occurs only while the tick is off the host, that is, during ecdysis from larva to nymph or from nymph to adult. Transmission of C. johnstoni in a wild population of bush rats (Rattus fuscipes) occurred in summer and winter, and was associated with peaks in the number of larval and/or nymphal stages of ticks on rats. C. johnstoni was transmitted experimentally to bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus, Perameles nasuta), bush rats and laboratory rats (R. norvegicus), indirectly by subcutaneous inoculation of third-stage larvae and directly by tick feeding. The prepatent period was approximately 3 months and the longest duration of microfilariae in the ‘ skin’ was more than 25 months. Dermal and ocular lesions were observed in R. fuscipes. The host-parasite relationship has the potential for development as an inexpensive and practical model for human onchocerciasis. 相似文献
