A laboratory assay (SAGA or Sediment Algal Growth Assay) was developed to assess the potential impact of sediment resuspension on the structure of phytoplankton communities, and to evaluate the effectiveness of various sediment treatments in decreasing the abundance of blue-green algae in the event of sediment resuspension during storms. In assays with sediment from eutrophic Akanoi Bay, Lake Biwa, Japan, 7–11 species of phytoplankton seeded from the sediments grew during the 3-week assay indicating that sediment resuspension has the potential to increase both phytoplankton biomass and species diversity. Treatment of sediments with Ca(NO3)2 substantially decreased phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll concentration) in assays with sediments from Akanoi Bay and the North Basin of Lake Biwa. Further, among various oxidation treatments of sediments, Ca(NO3)2 was most effective in decreasing or preventing filamentous blue-green algal growth in N- and P-replete media. In contrast, when sediments were added to P-limited phytoplankton dominated by green algae and diatoms, no growth of blue-green algae occurred regardless of sediment treatment. Over a period of four years, the seasonal periodicity of dominant phytoplankton species in a shallow, eutrophic Danish lake changed markedly. Cyanophytes prevailed during the summer period of all four years. In the first three years, species of Microcystis, Anabaena and Aphanothece dominated, whereas in the fourth year of investigation, these algae were replaced by Gloeotrichia echinulata (J. E. Smith) Richter and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs. The most striking environmental differences in the fourth year as compared with the previous three years, were an increase in tranparency, from about 0.5 meter in 1989–1991 to more than 2 metres preceding the summer maximum in 1992, and a simultaneous occurrence of low oxygen concentrations. A collapse of the fish population was followed by an increased proportion of large Cladocerans in the zooplankton. Improved light conditions at the bottom and grazing pressure from large Cladocerans favoured growth of the large colony forming blue-green algae, Gloeotrichia echinulata and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. These species germinate from resting spores in the sediment and are able to sustain some growth there before migration to the lake water. The transfer of algal biomass from the bottom sediment to the water phase was accompanied by a marked increase in concentrations of particulate phosphorus and nitrogen in the entire lake.  相似文献

Checklists of the marine algae of Malaysia have been published. The last checklist included the marine algae of Singapore. The checklist recorded 212 taxa for the region. This paper lists an additional 7 taxa of Chlorophyta, 18 taxa of Rhodophyta and 5 taxa of Phaeophyta, which had been left out of the last checklist. These include marine algae from Pulau Pinang, Pulau Redang and Pulau Sibu. In addition, new records of Cyanophyta (2 species), Chlorophyta (4 species), Rhodophyta (10 species) and Phaeophyta (3 species) are reported.  相似文献

The quality control for the reuse of cleaned soil from a contaminated site consisted in the determination of the main contaminants by analytical chemical methods such as GC and HPLC. Since it is not possible to analyze for all contaminants a toxicity test should be used to detect large concentrations of not routinely analyzed chemicals. The aim of the study was to develop a system for toxicity testing, which should be able to predict the toxicity of soil samples based on the concentration of chemicals in the soil and to detect toxic chemicals not analyzed by the routinely conducted soil analysis.Based upon the relative sensitivity to various contaminants as well as practical aspects such as test duration and costs the Microtox® test was favoured over the bioassays with Daphnia magna and Scenedesmus subspicatus. The Microtox® test was used to measure the toxicity of various pesticides and their major metabolites. The toxicity data of the pure compounds were used to predict the toxicity (EC50 and % inhibition of the bioluminescence reaction) of defined mixtures of chemicals in water by applying two different mathematical appriaches which are based on the additivity of the effects of the single chemicals. The predicted values were compared with the experimental data and showed good agreement.In order to be able to predict the toxicity of soil samples using the Microtox® test the soil/water partition coefficient (K d) was measured for the main contaminants. The toxicity of soil samples was predicted by calculating the concentration of the contaminants in the leachate by using the corresponding concentration in the soil and applying the K d values determined. From the calculated composition of the leachate the expected toxicity was estimated. This value was compared with the toxicity experimentally determined in the Microtox® test.  相似文献

The colonial and multicellular members of the Volvocales can be arranged in order of increasing size and complexity as the “volvocine series.” This series is often assumed to reflect an evolutionary progression. The flagellar apparatuses of previously examined algae are not consistent with a simple lineage. The flagellar apparatuses of Astrephomene gubernaculifera Pocock, Gonium pectorale Müller, Platydorina caudata Kofoid, Volvox rousseletii G. S. West, and V. carteri f. weismannia (Powers) Iyengar differ from one another, and there is no apparent progression inflagellar apparatus features from the simple to complex colonial forms. We examined the flagellar apparatuses of Volvulina steinii Playfair, Eudorina elegans Ehr., and Pleodorina illinoisensis Kofoid and found them to be similar to one another. The basal bodies are connected by a distal fiber that is offset to the anti side of the cell. Two microtubular rootlets originate on the inside of the basal bodies and extend toward the syn side. The other two rootlets are oriented perpendicular to the first two and are anti-parallel to each other. A coarsely striated component underlies the four-membered rootlets and extends to the basal bodies. A proximal fiber complex connects the two basal bodies. This complex consists of a branched striated component on the cis side of each basal body. One part extends toward the anti side of the cell, while the other extends into a fibrous component that runs between basal bodies. An additional structure extends in the anti direction from the trans side of each basal body. A fibrous component extends past one basal body in all four species. This component goes past the trans basal body in Volvulina steinii and the cis basal body in E. elegans and P. illinoisensis. The flagellar apparatuses of these organisms are similar to those of G. pectorale and Volvox carteri but different from the other colonial volvocalean algae examined. The algae examined in this study plus G. pectorale and V. carteri probably share a common evolutionary history that postdates the transition from the unicellular to colonial habit. Such a shared evolutionary history is a requirement of the volvocine hypothesis. However, we have not observed progressive changes in the flagellar apparatus correlated with increasing cell number, differentiation, and sexual specialization. Thus, it is possible, but not certain, that G. pectorale, Volvulina steinii, E. elegans, P. illinoisensis, and Volvox carteri may form part of a volvocine lineage.  相似文献

Our previous research has shown that many red algae metabolize polyunsaturated fatty acids to oxidized products resembling the eicosanoid hormones from mammals. We have extended these studies to members of the Phaeophyceae and Chlorophyta and find they also possess similar biosynthetic pathways. From several we have identified novel prostaglandin-like substances. Studies of the molecular mechanisms by which some of these marine oxylipins are formed have revealed that novel oxidative reactions are utilized. Understanding of these biosynthetic pathways in detail has allowed their utilization to produce research biochemicals of high value, such as 12S-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12S-HPETE). Because of their biological properties, seaweed-derived oxylipins have potential utility as pharmaceuticals and research biochemicals.  相似文献

Seasonal succession of phytoplankton biomass, its diversity and its photosynthetic activity in two highly eutrophic lakes have been compared. In order to test the intermediate disturbance hypothesis, the lakes have been chosen with almost the same level of trophy but different conditions of stratification, through two ice-free periods of open water with different weather conditions.High phytoplankton diversity throughout the period of investigation was characteristic for the shallower Lake Lobardzu. The number of species here was usually more than 30 and the Shannon diversity changed from 1.2 to 4.2. Owing to the frequent external disturbances, periods characterized by autogenic succession with establishing dominance and declining diversity alternated with periods of biomass reduction and rises of diversity and photosynthetic activity. In the warmer summer of 1983, with more intense warming of bottom layers and predominance of blue-greens, phytoplankton biomass was higher and diversity lower than in the cold summer of 1982.In stratified Lake Rudusku, phytoplankton diversity and number of species were usually much lower. During the long summer stratification up to three-four dominant species of blue-greens and dinoflagellates become established and competitive exclusion leading to low diversity advanced. Some changes in biomass and diversity, were caused by zooplankton activity.  相似文献

Percolomonads (Heterolobosea) are aquatic heterotrophic flagellates frequently found in saline waters up to hypersaline environments. We isolated and cultivated seven strains of percolomonad flagellates from marine waters and sediments as well as from a hypersaline inland lake in the Atacama Desert. Morphological characterizations, comprising light and scanning electron microscopy, revealed only slight differences between the strains mainly limited to the cell shape, length of flagella, and length of the ventral feeding groove. Phylogenetic analyses of the 18S and 28S rDNA genes showed the formation of three fully supported clades within the Percolomonadida: the Percolomonadidae, the Barbeliidae fam. nov. and the Lulaidae fam. nov. We describe two new families (Barbeliidae fam. nov., Lulaidae fam. nov.), a new genus (Nonamonas gen. nov.), and five new species (Percolomonas adaptabilis sp. nov., Lula levis sp. nov., Barbelia pacifica sp. nov., Nonamonas montiensis gen. et sp. nov., Nonamonas santamariensis gen. et sp. nov.). Salinity experiments showed that P. adaptabilis sp. nov. from the Atlantic was better adapted to high salinities than all other investigated strains. Moreover, comparisons of our cultivation-based approach with environmental sequencing studies showed that P. adaptabilis sp. nov. seems to be globally distributed in marine surface waters while other species seem to be more locally restricted.  相似文献

Intercolony aggression was observed for a southwestern desert subterranean termite, Heterotermes aureus(Snyder), in bait plots in a Sonoran Desert grassland in Arizona. Intermittent conflict took place at the sites of corrugatedpaper rolls on the boundary between two colonies. Rows of dead termites locked in combat were found within the corrugations, with additional dead termites usually in the soil beneath the roll. Dead soldiers constituted 64 to 100% of termites recovered from sites of intercolony conflict. Ongoing intercolony aggression is likely involved in the maintenance of discrete H. aureusterritories.  相似文献

The long chain aldehyde-forming enzyme (LCAE) activity that catalyzes formation of long chain aldehydes, such as (8Z, 11Z, 14Z)-heptadecatrienal, (8Z, 11Z)-heptadecadienal, (8Z)-heptadermal, (7Z, 10Z, 13Z)-hexadecatrienal and pentadecanal from linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid, in that order, occurs in a wide range of green, brown and red seaweeds. The LCAE activity increased with maturation of juvenile fronds of Enteromorpha sp. in culture. Thus, cultivation of seaweeds for flavor foods is of interest. The release of long chain aldehydes from the thallus into the medium was confirmed by a quantitative high performance liquid chromatography of volatile compounds, using a closed loop stripping technique, during the culture of the green alga, Ulva pertusa. This finding suggests physiological roles of long chain aldehydes and LCAE activity in marine ecosystems.  相似文献
