Morphological variations of the deciduous dentition are as useful as those of the permanent dentition for determining the biological affinities of human populations. This paper provides material on morphological variations of deciduous teeth of the prehistoric Japanese population from the Late and the Latest Jomon Period (ca. 2000–ca. 300 B.C.). The expression of nonmetric traits of the deciduous teeth in the Jomon sample shows a closer affinity with modern Japanese and Native American samples than with American White, Asiatic Indian, and African samples. However, the frequency of shoveling in deciduous upper incisors in the Jomon sample is lower than those in modern Japanese and Native American samples. The Jomon sample also expresses a much higher frequency of cusp 6 in deciduous lower second molars than seen in modern Japanese, Ainu, and Native American samples. The frequency in the Jomon sample is equal to that in the Australian Aboriginal sample, which shows cusp 6 most frequently among the samples compared. A somewhat low incidence of incisor shoveling in the Jomon sample was also reported in the permanent dentition (Turner [1976] Science 193:911–913, [1979] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 51:619–635, [1987] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 73:305–321, [1990] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 82:295–317; T. Hanihara [1992] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 88:163–182, 88:183–196). However, the frequency of cusp 6 in the Jomon sample shows no significant difference from those of Northeast Asian or Native American samples in the permanent dentition (Turner [1987] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 73:305–321; T. Hanihara [1992] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 88:1–182, 88:183–196). Effects of neuropeptides on growth of cultivated rat molar pulp fibroblasts   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The effect of the neuropeptides substance P (SP), neurokinin A (NKA), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) on DNA synthesis of dental pulp cells was investigated in cells grown from molar tooth bud explants from 4–6 days old rat pups. A concentration response-assay of the proliferative response of pulpal cells was performed with SP, NPY, NKA, CGRP and VIP (0.01 to 1 nM) in the presence of EGF (10 ng/ml), hydrocortisone (0.4 μg/ml) and 3% FCS, using [3H]thymidine incorporation. The results showed that SP, NKA and CGRP, but not NPY and VIP, increased the cell number in a concentration-dependent manner, with maxima at 10−10 – 10−9 M (SP, NKA) and 10−7 M (CGRP). No potentiating effect was noted when cells are simultaneously stimulated with SP and CGRP. The finding that SP, NKA and CGRP have growth regulatory properties on pulpal cells in vitro suggests that sensory neuropeptides may be involved during pulpal development or in wound healing after pulpal injury.  相似文献

Schwartz ('74) proposed revised homologies of the deciduous and permanent anterior teeth in living lemuriform primates of the family Indriidae. Gingerich ('77) described a juvenile specimen of Avahi and emphasized the importance of functional integrity in controlling the pattern of dental reduction in primates, neither of which supports Schwartz's interpretation. Schwartz ('78) recently reiterated his position without adequately discussing the Avahi evidence and the functional basis that probably controls dental reduction. Avahi has a deciduous dentition intermediate in morphology between that of Lemuridae and Indriidae, and similar to both. Thus the lower deciduous dental formula of Indriidae is probably 2.1.3, which is the typical and maximum deciduous complement known in living and fossil lemuriform primates. The formula of the lower permanent dentition in Indriidae is thus 2.0.2.3.  相似文献

本文采用Turner建立的人类牙齿形态特片分类标准观察研究了内蒙古察右前旗庙子沟新石器时代人类牙齿的非测量特并采用由非测量特征的出现率计算人群间生物学距离的MMD系数和聚类分析方法对比了庙子沟与东亚地区其他人群之间的关系,研究结果表明庙子沟新石器时代人类在牙齿形成特征上与包括安阳殷墟青铜时代人类在内的亚洲东北部人类相近,而与东南亚人群差别较大。  相似文献

Interactions among bacterial populations can have a profound influence on the structure and physiology of microbial communities. Interspecies microbial interactions begin to influence a biofilm during the initial stages of formation, bacterial attachment and surface colonization, and continue to influence the structure and physiology of the biofilm as it develops. Although the majority of research on bacterial interactions has utilized planktonic communities, the characteristics of biofilm growth (cell positions that are relatively stable and local areas of hindered diffusion) suggest that interspecies interactions may be more significant in biofilms.  相似文献

A fundamental requirement for the understanding and control of biofilms is the continuous nondestructive monitoring of biofilm processes. This paper reviews research analytical techniques that monitor biofilm processes in a continuous nondestructive manner and that could also be modified for industrial applications. To be considered continuous and nondestructive for the purpose of this review a technique must: (a) function in an aqueous system; (b) not require sample removal; (c) minimize signal from organisms or contaminants in the bulk phase; and (d) provide real-time data. Various microscopic, spectrochemical, electrochemical, and piezoelectrical analysis methods fulfill these criteria. These techniques monitor the formation of biofilms, the physiology of the microorganisms within biofilms, and/or the interaction of the biofilms with their environment. It is hoped that this review will stimulate development and use of biofilm monitoring techniques in industrial and environmental settings.  相似文献

The interfacial interactions of a toxic trace metal, Pb, with a surface modified by a marine film-forming bacterium, Psedomonas atlantica, were predicted by a structured biofilm model used in conjunction with a chemical speciation model. The validity of the integrated model was tested for batch and continuous operations. Dynamic responses of the biophase due to transient lead concentration increases were also stimulated. The reasonable pre dictions achieved by the model demonstrate its utility in describing trace metal distributions in complex systems where the adsorption properties of inorganic surfaces are modified by adherent bacteria production of extracellular polymers. Beaked whales are poorly known cetaceans with a peculiar dentition consisting of one or two pairs of mandibular tusks, sometimes accompanied by dozens of peg-like rudimentary teeth normally concealed in the gum tissue. This study investigated the ultrastructure, chemical and biomechanical properties of vestigial teeth in a specimen of Cuvier's beaked whale deposited in the Otago Museum collections. The juvenile individual had 49 needle-like vestigial teeth in situ on the lower jaws. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed a thin layer of semi-structured prismless enamel covering the teeth. Mechanical properties values were within the range of values reported for other cetaceans, suggesting relaxed biomechanical functional demands. Chemical analyses revealed preservation of the hydroxyapatite composition despite morphological simplification and vestigial nature. The presumed high incidence of vestigial teeth in Ziphius cavirostris, the small size and the degenerate nature of these structures are consistent with their interpretation as vestiges rather than atavisms.  相似文献

A novel benzimidazole molecule that was identified in a small‐molecule screen and is known as antibiofilm compound 1 (ABC‐1) has been found to prevent bacterial biofilm formation by multiple bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, without affecting bacterial growth. Here, the biofilm inhibiting ability of 156 μM ABC‐1 was tested in various biofilm‐forming strains of S. aureus. It was demonstrated that ABC‐1 inhibits biofilm formation by these strains at micromolar concentrations regardless of the strains' dependence on Polysaccharide Intercellular Adhesin (PIA), cell wall‐associated protein dependent or cell wall‐ associated extracellular DNA (eDNA). Of note, ABC‐1 treatment primarily inhibited Protein A (SpA) expression in all strains tested. spa gene disruption showed decreased biofilm formation; however, the mutants still produced more biofilm than ABC‐1 treated strains, implying that ABC‐1 affects not only SpA but also other factors. Indeed, ABC‐1 also attenuated the accumulation of PIA and eDNA on cell surface. Our results suggest that ABC‐1 has pleotropic effects on several biofilm components and thus inhibits biofilm formation by S. aureus.  相似文献
